To infinity and beyond: Wings & Things soars
Grey skies formed a great backdrop for the colourful airshow that entertained an eager crowd, while the displays and stalls on the ground were also popular. by EMMA HARVEY Cloudy skies deter red neither pilots nor patrons from the second annual W i ng s & T h i ng s event at the Coonaba rab ran Aerodrome on Saturday, 10 September. The family-friendly event and air-show was a brisk but glorious day out, drawing crowds from across the region and beyond. Headl i ne r of the day
was 2019 Air Race World Champion Matt Hall and his team of former RAAF and elite aerobatic pilots, who took to the skies in a series of dramatic and exhilarating aerobatic and formation displays. Coonabarabran Aero Cl u b, w it h t h e s u p p o r t of Wa r r um bung l e Sh i re Counci l, a r ranged an impressive program fe a t u r i n g a va r i et y o f aircraft, including The Red
Star Roolettes, Nanchang CJ6A, the Pitts Special, the MXS and Matt Hall’s very own P-51 Mustang. In his keynote address, Matt shared his journey from humble rural beginnings to elite World Championship air racing, as well as some advice and life-lessons learned along the way. “My friends say, ‘look at my investment property’,” he joked.
“I say, ‘that’s cool, can you fly it?’ Invest in your happiness.” T h ro u g h o u t t h e d a y, event- goer s enjoyed ma r ket sta l l s, raf fl es, joy flights, scenic helicopter rides over the Wa r r um bung l es, and a photo/signing session with Matt. Kids danced to music in the empty hangars and lunch -time lines for the Rotar y Club’s steak and
sausage sandwiches were out the gate. I n tota l , t h e a i r b a s e hosted over 20 stallholders and displays from community organisations, and attendance exceeded 20 0 0 people over the day. Coonabarabran Aero Club president, Sherelle Moore said Wings & Things wouldn’t have been the success it was without the support of Council, and
local community groups and businesses. “Imagine a small aero club being able to attract the likes of Matt Hall, the Red Rad ia l Roo l et tes, Warriors Warbirds and the P-51 Mustang,” Ms Moore said. “I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, especially pulling 8g’s in the Extra with Emma!”
