EDITORIAL: THE RACE FOR THE SEAT OF PARKES It was hard to miss the green and gold vinyl-wrapped National Party wagon when it rolled into Coonabarabran last month. Onboard – Jamie Chaffey from Gunnedah, the endorsed National Party candidate contesting the seat of Parkes at the next Federal election.

by KAIT BRITTON While Prime Minister Anthony Albanese could call the nex t election any where f ro m D e ce m b e r a n d up until May next year, Ch a f fey h a s a l re a d y hit the ground running and remains the only candidate to make a star t in this par ticular race.

It’s big boots to fill for Chaffey, taking on Mark Coulton’s impressive 17year legacy as Member for Parkes, but one in which he said he’s keen to embrace.

A similar campaign by the National Par ty at a State l eve l, to have Gi lgand ra’s Andrew Scheir shadow d e p a r t i n g m e m b e r, Kevin Humphries, for the seat of Bar won failed to hit the mark in 2019, with then Shooters and Fishers party candidate, Roy Butler finishing in the lead, and following that up by reclaiming the seat as an Independent last year.

The mood on the ground back in 2019 was one of despondency for the farming faithful devotees of the National Party. In drought, with water running out and stock being off-loaded at alarming rates, voters at the time seemed pe r p l exed w ith w hat way to go and looked to the Shooters and Fishers as the next best thing.

And it wasn’t just Barwon

where those results were fielded, much like the rise of the “Teal Party” at the last Federal election.

While Federal politics is a wor ld away from Local Government and Chaffey’s early days as a boilermaker, the ability to negotiate and meet w ith constituents a re handy skills to harness in the biz.

The father of four and grandfather of three has relinquished the reins as mayor of Gunnedah Shi re Council after t wo te r m s i n th e to p job, along with his role as executive member of the Country Mayors Association.

On his solo tour, door k n o c k i n g a c ro s s t h e north-west quadrant of the state, Chaffey said while the electorate was diverse, he was hearing t h e s a m e key i s s u e s bei ng repeated ti me and time again, from

town to town – crime, a g e d ca re, h o u s i n g , renewable energy and cost-of-living pressures.

If the size of the Parkes electorate would put a nyo n e of f, C h a f fey doesn’t seem phased, even with a redistribution of boundaries adding an extra 13,342km2 to cover.

F o r th e s tat i s t i cs’ enthusiasts, as of the next election the seat of Parkes will encompass more than 50 per cent of NSW (406,755km 2) – and is not far of f the measuring the same size as the entire country of Swe d e n. B re a k i n g it dow n fu r the r, f rom 151 e l e cto rate s at a Federal level, Parkes is the seventh largest in size, equating to 5.3 per cent of Australia’s land mass.

Chaf fey i s quick to acknowledge that he has only visited Broken Hill for the first time in the

past few months (and that was before the lights went out). Out west, he even bagged himself a front page stor y at Bourke’s Western Herald, which he seemed pretty p l ea sed w ith. A se l fconfessed traditional m e d i a co n s u m e r, Ch a f fey h a s s a i d h e had started working on i ncreasi ng hi s social media presence despite h i s cyn ici sm fo r the actual product.

Wh i l e it’s s t i l l ea r l y d a y s , i t ’s d i f f i c u l t to read the room and how people are feeling towa rd s p o l i t i c s a n d

politicians, especially af te r the f i na l resu lts o f t h e U n i te d Sta te s Presidential Election last week.

In stark contrast to the fanfare, fake news and drama of the presidential ca m p a i g n i n t h e U S, w ith tou r ing media teams, conventions and celebrity endorsements, Australian politics, especially in the bush, are a more humble affair. And rightly so.

A few photo o p p o r t u n i t i e s , some conveniently timed funding a n n o u n ce m e nt s a n d

cheque presentations, a barbecue with the local f i s h i n g c l u b, g et t i n g his name “out the re” beyond the borders of the Liverpool Plains will be Chaf fey’s biggest hurdle. And like Coulton and Humphries’ legacy, if he succeeds, he will likely hold onto the job until he calls time.

So, whatever unfolds in the next few months leading up to the Federal election, Jamie Chaffey is already a step ahead of the com petition, b e ca u s e t h e ra ce i s already underway…

Recently, on a Friday afternoon, I put my bath on, and once again it turned brown. I had to let the water out – and I have to pay for that wasted water!

I rang the Warrumbungle Shire Council to make a complaint and didn’t expect anything to be done or to be taken seriously, as this had been my experience in the past.

However, this time, my call was answered by Kate. She listened to my complaint and apologised for the problem.

She then said “...hold on, I will get the plumber and see what he says.”

I waited.

I didn’t expect that anything would be done, so it was a shock when Kate got back on the phone and said, “The plumber will be at your place in about 10 minutes.”

I thanked her and didn’t expect the plumber. Why would you? My experience in the past was totally negative.

Well, I was in shock again when the plumber arrived at my place, before 10 minutes was up. He also apologised and said he would flush the water immediately.

Both the plumber and Kate were respectful, didn’t treat you as if you didn’t know what you were talking about and apologised for the inconvenience.

The young plumber said they had been

replacing lead pipes in Coonabarabran and they hadn’t had time to flush all the areas, but were trying to. Good one.

What has happened? Is this the beginning of a new culture at the Council?

If so, please keep on going.

One thing that still worries me however, is – why do we still have lead pipes? It was 1968 when it became public that lead in water or other places was poisonous. Lead poisoning can be terminal. I remember it was 1968, because I was at the National Art School in Newcastle and an official came to tell us that we needed to change our oil paints as there was lead in them.

That was a really expensive exercise as oil paints were very expensive.

We were told about what could happen if you had lead poisoning. I was horrified and expected to die in the near future, as I used to suck my paint brushes after I had cleaned them in turps. Usually there would be residue of paint still on the brushes, but luckily not enough to kill me.

Keep up the good work Kate and the young plumber. (Sorry, I didn’t get your name – shock will do that). Maybe there could be a competition for the nicest Council employee each year? Just hoping.

Nurses strike over pay

Nurses from Coonabarabran Health Service and the Community Care joined forces with colleagues from across the state on Wednesday, 13 November, in a 24-hour stop work action, demanding fair pay and improved working conditions.

Gathering along C o o n a b a r a b r a n’s m a i n street yesterday morning, the nurses stood in solidarity with public-health staff across NSW who are calling for a 15 per cent pay increase, citi ng ex haustion, wage stagnation and rising costs of living as factors undermining the sustainability of their workforce.

Led by the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA), this strike is the second state-wide action taken in recent months.

The NSWNMA stated that the decision followed weeks of fruitless negotiations with

the NSW Government, which has held firm on a proposed 3% annual wage increase — an offer that nurses argue fails to address critical pay gaps and their rising financial pressures.

The union also claims the Government has not put for ward any new funding solutions to match wages in other states or reduce the gender pay disparity, which has reached a decade high in NSW. NSWNMA general secretar y, Shaye Candish voiced the frustration and d i s a p p o i n t m e n t fe l t b y thousands of nurses and

midwives across the state, especially in regional areas.

“This strike action isn’t taken lightly, but the Government has left us no other choice,” Ms Candish said.

“Our members are extremely frustrated and disheartened – they have b een h o l d i n g o n fo r a n outcome on bet te r pay, juggling challenging working conditions, trying to manage their bills in a cost-of-living cr isis, and now they feel terribly let down.”

Ms Caddish said NSW had some of the lowest paid nurses and midwives in the country, yet they continued

to see reco rd activit y in emergency depar tments and across the public-health system.

“It’s no wonder nurses and midwives are continuing to move interstate or reevaluate their careers,” she said.

“Other female-dominated workers such as teachers, early childhood educators a n d a g ed - ca re wo r ke r s are being valued and wellremune rated by Labo r governments, yet the NSW Government is happy to let the gender pay gap grow in NSW, which is now the highest in a decade.”

High-flying success for third festival Wings and Things successfully soared on Saturday and, despite the heat, drew huge crowds and high levels of excitement.

p i l o t, M a t t H a l l h a s proven to be a star of the Wings and Things s h ow fo r t h re e yea r s now, and this year was no different.

“Wings and Things is one of my favourite air shows because it is such a beautiful place a n d t h e p e o p l e a re pa r ticu la r ly specia l,” Matt said.

“I loved going out to Coonabarabran High school and speak i ng with the students.

“The whole air show that Jason Newton and Jo have put together is very community based and hopefully inspiring for people of all ages to get into aviation.”

Emma Mcdonald is head of Aviation and an

aerobatics pilot in Matt Hall Racing. “ I t ’s n ot o f te n t h e you encounter a communit y so r ich in warmth and inclusivity, and I can honestly say that the atm os phe re i n Coonaba rab ra n i s s o m e t h i n g I ’ve o n l y experienced a handful of times in my career so far,” she said.

“One of the highlights for me was visiting the local school, where I had the opportunity to speak with the students about my career, my j o u r n e y, a n d h o w I worked to achieve my dreams. “ T h a n k yo u to t h e i nc red i b l e peop l e of Coonaba rab ran fo r welcoming me with

open arms and a special thanks to Jason N ew to n, Sh e re l l e, J o a n d t h e w h o l e Ae ro Club team for bringing this event together and, finally, to Matt Hall and the MHR team for their ongoing support. “ I t w a s a n unforgettable weekend, and I’m grateful for the chance to be par t of

such a meaningful event.

“I left feeling inspired, reminded of the power o f c o m m u n i t y, a n d hopeful for the future.”

Celebrate a ‘Night Under the Stars’ ‘A Night Under the Stars’ is one of Coonabarabran’s long-awaited events. Originally planned to be celebrated during NAIDOC, the evening will now be held on Saturday, 23 November at 7pm at the Coonabarabran Racecourse.

Coonabarabran Local Abo r iginal Lands Counci l (L ALC) CEO, Brandon Nixon said the evening would be a celebration of culture and “a b i g g at h e r i n g to co m e together as one”. “ T h e t h e m e fo r N A I D O C this year is ‘Blak, Loud and Proud’ and we are exactly that in Coonabarabran, so were celebrating,” Mr Nixon said. “ T h i s eve nt w i l l i n c l u d e the presentation of the 2024 NAIDOC Awards and feature Isaac Compton, who was a crowd favourite at the ball we had last year. There are some formalities, which everyone will get to see on the night.”

Tickets for ‘A Night Under the Stars’ are just $50, covering event entry and a canapé-style dinner provided by Cardians.

Guests can mingle and relax, with a bar open throughout the evening.

“It’s not just for Aboriginal people,” Mr Nixon clarified.

“We want everyone to come and to celebrate the strong Gamilaraay culture that we’ve got here in Coonabarabran and fo r eve r yone to come together and celebrate our culture and what has been an incredibly challenging year.”

“With the weather warming up, the appeal of an outdoor

event such as this is rapidly p r ov i n g to b e p o p u l a r, creating a buz z throughout the community. “ La s t yea r, th e N A I D O C Ball proved incredibly popular with the community, but this year, the LALC has turned its efforts towards this more ‘low key’ event, which will keep the Ball fresh for when it happens again. We do not want the Ball to run its course, and it will be determined by the NAIDOC theme each year.”

Roach’s unveils new shopfront Roach’s Home Hardware celebrated the grand opening of its newly-renovated “Outdoor Living and Camping” display shopfront on Friday, 8 November.

The Coonaba rab ran business welcomed the community to explore the new space, which boasts an expanded range of camping, fishing and outdoor gear.

Roach’s sto re manage r Ambe r Burton expressed her gratitude for the local support at the event, sharing her excitement over the positive response.

“The feedback has been great – everyone has said how good the space looks now,” Amber said.

T h e d o u b l e - s to rey b u i l d i n g o n Dalgarno Street, housing the new display, holds a unique history as the original site of Roach’s Hardware.

Over the years, it served various purposes, including as a video shop and the Rotary Bookshop.

While the building was initially slated for demolition, Amber and the Roach’s team chose to renovate and help preserve a piece of local history.

“It was a chance to bring new life into the original site and cater to the growing demand for outdoor and camping products,” she said.

The remodel relied heavily on local talent.

“We hired all local trades,” Amber said, listing contributors like AVPro for asbestos removal, Wayne Lee Construction for plastering and local plumbers.

This local -f i r st app roach is a cornerstone of Roach’s commitment to community, ensuring the businesses that support them also benefit from the store’s success.

The shopfront’s striking new exterior, fitted with striking trim deck and green brickwork that complements the main building, has already caught the eye of passersby.

“The town needed this – the new look has really lifted the whole street,” Amber continued.

“It’s been a lot of work, but seeing everyone enjoy it makes it worthwhile.”

With the renovation, Roach’s is excited to introduce an expanded inventory, with an emphasis on outdoor, camping, and fishing supplies...just in time for Christmas!

“We’ve got more camping gear, f i s h i n g a p pa re l, a n d even so m e plans for items geared toward young boys and men – things like camping accessories and fishing shirts, which were hard to find locally.”

Roach’s Home Hardware invites the community to stop by, browse the new shopfront and share ideas for future products.

The shopfront will be open from 9am to 5pm on Monday to Friday, and 9am to 12 noon on Saturday.

Coona pauses to reflect On 11 November, at 11am, Australia paused to remember, honouring the soldiers who fought, and continue to fight for our nation’s peace, 106 years after the guns on the Western Front fell silent.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY In Coonabarabran the R emembra nce Day ser v ice was held at the Clock Tower Memorial Cenotaph , attraci ng a la rge attendance of community members and representatives from all three schools – St L awrence’s, Coona Public and Coona High.

Highlights of this year’s service i ncluded the pa r ticipation of members from the local Army Cadet Unit and the dignified presence of the RSL Spur Ranch initiative.

“We are honoured today to have a contingent of the RSL Lifecare p r o g r a m i n i t ’s S p u r R a n c h i n it i at ive , led by the r iderles s horse – a tribute to our brave young men of the cavalry, a famous last action in war for the charge on Beersheba,” said Kevin Barrington,

Coonabarabran RSL Sub-branch president.

“Starting at dusk, the brave men of the 4th Australian Light Horse Brigade, charging with bayonets only in hand to jump the Turkish t r enche s i n a su r pr i s e at t ac k , then successfully capture the town and go on to take Palestine and Jerusalem from the Turks.”

A colourful tribute to this year’s service was the community-made ‘poppy carpet’, organised by Marie Knight, which had been lovingly created over past weeks by local knitters.

National Anthem T he R SL was represent ed by Patron, Bill Wilkin, aslong with Aubrey Dunn, Lawrie Dawson and Kevin Barrington. “ T he Great Wa r had come at significant cost to our young nation – and of the 416,000 who enlisted, 33 0,0 0 0 that sailed, more than 60,000 never returned home and 155,000 returned home wounded,” Mr Barrington said. “ The war affected every community, large and small across Australia.”

“Since that day, the ANZAC spirit has carried on through soldiers i n W W2 , K orea, Vietnam, I raq and Afghanistan, with more than 102,000 names on the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial.”

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Tooraweenah Public Technology lessons S t u d e n t s i n Kindergarten to Year 6 have been working on their creativity and problem-solving skills during technology lessons over the past few weeks. Students are using the Lego WeDo 2.0 kits to create their own working model of

an electronic gate with motion sensor.

The classes have looked at the school’s real-world example and noticed that the gate runs on a track-andcog system. Students have been challenged to design their own working gate from Lego WeDo 2.0 and are using the

Coonabarabran Public corresponding app to code the speed and time the gate is open.

We are very thankful to Petria for leading these lessons and providing opportunities for students to grow their coding and problemsolving skills. Developing future focused learners!

The last few days have seen many gatherings for different reasons at CPS. Whether it was in the hall, under the flagpole or around the dais, we have been quiet, listened attentively and showed respect for the speaker and the subject.

Morning assembly each day this week held a number of Prefect election speeches. To be considered,students in Year 5 must give a short presentation to the school on their abilities and

skills which they consider to be important for a school leader. Among the various students vying for the positions were Niah Walker, Leo Homer-Forbes and Mia Bowman, who both told us about the aims of their leadership bids.

Another gathering led by Narelle Pfeiffer was for a small but environmentally responsible group of students from our OC class who are concerned with Koala wildlife

preservation. They meet to consider habitat, diet and human impact and how it can be lessened for the native species.

This is very important work which creates understanding and focus for our local flora and fauna.

For the observation of Remembrance Day we gathered yet again. Jayce McDonough explained why we observe this historic and important day. He made reference to the German armistice

and the end of the war.

Then, Matilda Graham explained the symbolism and importance of the poppies, which many students had made.

Zaara Brown recited a poem and Lucy Hayman read the Ode. We then all faced the west and paid our respects to the fallen soldiers while the Last Post played. With solemnity, we observed a minute silence before turning to the east for the playing of the Reveille.

Over the last six weeks, the preschool children at Yu luw i r r i K ids have been immersed in a, hands-on educational experience, caring for a group of baby chickens.

The chicks, donated by a child’s grandmother, have transformed the classroom into a unique learning environment filled with excitement, curiosity, and valuable life lessons.

E a c h d ay, t h e ch i ld ren feed, clean, and observe the growing chicks. T hrough this ca r i ng pro cess, the children are developing an early understanding of an ima l wel fa re, which encourages compassion and patience. The children have a lso lea r ned how t o approach the birds calmly, with the educators emphasising the impor tance of gentleness and respect in handling the chicks.

Coulton urges common sense on farming chemical decisions Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton has spoken out in Parliament in support of the use of paraquat in modern farming practises.

Mr Coulton, speaking in support of a motion moved by his Nationals’ colleague, Member for Mallee Dr Anne Webster, said farmers throughout the Parkes electorate r e l y o n p a r a q u a t to be able to farm in an environmentally friendly and financially viable manner.

“I speak with practical experience in the use of paraquat,” Mr Coulton said during his speech.

“In my previous role as a grain farmer, we would use that in what’s known as a double knock. The glyphosate wo u l d ta ke o ut a l ot of the weeds, but the harder to k ill ones wo u l d n e e d a n ot h e r application, this time of paraquat, to finish them up.

“The reason that we have the b igges t wheat crops on record ever har vested is the technique of growing wheat in western NSW, and that’s using zero till.

“We’re not ploughing or cultivating; we’re just p r e s e r v i n g t h e t ra s h from the previous crop on top of the ground. It reflects the light and the heat, and it conserves the moisture.

“ We h e a r a l o t o f talk in this place about ca r b o n fa r m i n g...th e farmers in my electorate have been doing this for decades. They pioneered this process.”

Mr Coulton said while h e h a s s y m p at hy fo r those i nte r viewed by the ABC who believe paraquat may be behind their Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis, times h a ve c h a n g e d , a n d histor ical practises of chem i ca l use a re no longer occurring today.

He said farmers now apply herbicides in a safe and p rotected

envi ronment, w ith limited exposure to the chemicals.

“He [the man interviewed by the ABC] also said he was soaked i n th i s ch em i ca l,” M r Coulton said.

“If you soaked you r self ever y day in p et ro l, yo u p ro b a b l y wo u l d n’t b e a l l t h a t h e a l t h y, b u t w e ’ r e not bann i ng pet ro l.

If mechanics tipped battery acid over their heads while installing bat te r ies i nto ca r s, it probably wouldn’t do them much good either, but we're not banning b a t te r i e s . T h i s i s t h e same.

“When I used paraquat, I wore r u b b e r g l oves a n d a long-sleeved shirt. It was towed by a tractor with a carbon filtered cab – ever ything as per the recommendation.

“If you follow those recommendations, it is a safe chemical to use.

It’s an essential one. We need to make sure we don’t have these kneejerk reactions from people on the fringes of things.”

Mr Coulton has also called for the APVMA to “lift its game”, urging the

regulato r to app rove the release of Victrato fo r t h e t re a t m e nt o f crown rot.

“Crown rot is a very, very insidious issue with wheat, which remains largely unknown until the crops mature, and then the yield just falls away,” Mr Coulton said. “ F o r t h e l a s t 12 months o r so, I’ve been talking with farmers and suppliers in my electorate Victrato. The significant tr ial s of V ictrato that h a ve b e e n d o n e by Sy n g e n t a w i t h l o c a l firm McGregor Gourlay ove r f i ve ye a r s h a ve shown considerable imp rovement in yield potential by controlling crown rot.”

M r C o u l to n s a i d i t was hoped that this product would be released this year, but growers and suppliers in the Parkes electorate were disappointed to learn recently that the release of Victrato has once again been delayed and will not be available for the 2025 cropping season due to efficacy issues, not potential environmental impacts.

Victrato won’t have any ill effects and the delay is only about efficacy, why not release it and let the market decide whether it works or not.

“ I’m not say i ng we t a k e s h o r t c u t s ,” M r Coulton said.

“I’m not saying that chemicals shouldn’t be properly scrutinised. But

Grain handlers vote on GrainCorp pay deal Grain handlers working at grain receival sites across NSW will vote on whether to accept a proposed pay deal with their employer GrainCorp, said the Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) this week.

The deal comes after grain handlers rolled out protected industrial action authorised by the Fair Work Commission after negotiations broke down with GrainCorp last month.

I ndustr ia l action occurred at Boggabri, Narrabri, Moree, Parkes, Caragabal, and at many other sites.

season, but GrainCorp just weren’t listening, we’re really happy they

came back to the table a nd we h ave a de a l everyone can live with.”

KOOKAS RUGBY The Coonabarabran Rugby Club will hold its annual general meeting on Tuesday, 21 November, at the Imperial Hotel.

After four consecutive seasons of on-field success it is important that club members all show up to keep the momentum going. A strong committee is always the pathway to a successful season.

Most of the executive will be staying on, but no doubt there will be positions available, along with committee positions.

game tour in Japan for the pre-season of 2026.

This was discussed last year along with a survey conducted amongst the playing group and supporters to decide on an itinerary.

WEATHER WATCH The first 10 days of November have continued to be very dry.

Maximum temperatures have been a degree or so above normal in Victoria, grading to about three degrees above normal at Forbes, nearly four degrees above normal at Coonabarabran, five degrees at Narrabri and, finally, six degrees at Roma, where there have been widespread bush fires, some of which have got out of control.

Many places recorded their highest temperature for the first week of November for many years including the highest temperature for northeast Victoria since 1957.

At Coonabarabran, the temperature of 35.2 on 7 November was the highest temperature since 35.9 on 3 November 1988.

At both Narrabri and Roma the temperatures soared to 40.6 and 42.1 respectively on 7 November, the hottest since 1965.

Thargomindah also recorded its highest temperature on 7 November with a reading of 45.1 degrees, which did break the 1965 first week of November record of 45.0 degrees.

Looking at both 1965 and 1988, there were significant rainfalls during the fourth week of November and heavier rainfalls early December

and third week of December, and later on in February and March of 1966 and 1989.

Roma did record a maximum temperature of 42.6 degrees on 13 November 1913. Three weeks later came the so called Black Wednesday on 3 December.

The temperature soared to 44.4 degrees at Roma and 42.2 degrees at Coonabarabran on this day in 1913.

The Royal Hotel in Coonabarabran, which was formally owned by my great-great-uncle Robert Nelson, was completely destroyed by fire on Black Wednesday.

S ome muc h-ne e de d r a i n f a l l arrived the third week of December 1913, again during late January 1914 and heavy rain late February of 1914.

But the summer of 1913-14 was very hot across much of the nation.

Mean-minimum temperatures graded from three degrees below normal during the first 10 days of November in north-east Victoria to 1.5 degrees below normal in the Riverina to 1.5 to 2 degrees above normal north from Dubbo.

Rutherglen has had five mornings out of 10 with frosts this November a sure sign of a very hot summer, notably in January and February.

Community rallies to get local kids to cattle show What do you get when you put nine students, eight steers and heifers and one very-determined agriculture teacher together? Beef Bonanza success!

With the backing of the Coonaba rab ran PA I & H S o c i et y, l o ca l students were able to attend the 2024 Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza in Scone last month, with the first “Coona Show Ag Team” created.

Under the tutelage of Sue McGoldrick, the l o ca l s t u d e nt s s p e nt many afternoons and weekends preparing for the competition.

In addition to breaking the steers and h e i fe r s i nto l e a d i n g , the students were also instructed on parading skills and learnt how to judge cattle.

O n T h u r s d a y, 2 4 October, a convoy of trucks, utes and camper trailers departed Coonabarabran.

Destination – Scone.

The students en joyed fou r days of competition in cattle leading, cattle judging and the hoof-and-hook competition, returning Sunday afternoon t i red, w it h a h a n df u l of ribbons, a truck load of memories and hopefully an increased passion for agriculture.

without the support of the community.

“We are grateful to l oca l b us i nes ses that donated m oney that went towards feeding stock, entr y fees and embroidery of the kid’s shirts,” Callen said.

“We also would like to thank the producers w h o p rov i d e d s te e r s and heifers, particularly Sue, who p rovided th ree heife r s and a steer.”

Callen said ag programs like this d o n’t h a p p e n u n l e s s there was a passionate teacher involved.

“It is amazing to see the way Sue works with the children – keep in mind, these kids weigh in at about 25 to 30kg and some of the steers they are leading weigh over 500kg,” he said.

“It takes a lot of skill and confidence to walk into a ring and control an animal that size.

“Sue teaches the k ids how to cont rol the animal, as well as building confidence in the kids. It is truly great to watch her at work.”

So, what’s next for the Coona Show Ag Team?

“Get ting the k ids to Scone was our first priority,” Callen said.

“The Coona Show com m it tee ha s been

talking about how best to promote agriculture to the youth in ou r co m m u n i t y fo r s o m e time now.

“I think this is the perfect catalyst for us to d eve l o p a b i g g e r prog ram – one that doesn’t take anything

a way f rom the g reat job the local school s are already doing, but a program that builds and supports their

good work. “ We a r e p l a n n i n g a meeti ng to d i scus s what this might look like in the future and if any

members of the public are interested in being i nvo l ve d , I a m m o r e than happy for them to give me a call.”

The Friday session commenced an hour later than originally planned, but with willing volunteers, by just after 4pm they were up and running with the cutting portion of the show.

Quentin Stapleton travelled up from Oberon to judge the entire weekend and commented on the skill and talent on display.

Saturday and Sunday were early morning starts, with both days wrapped up long before dark due to smooth running of events. “ We had seve ra l reg u l a r s co m e to compete, and some newcomers to the sport,” Michelle Rapley said.

“People always tell us that they love to come to Binnaway and the Multipurpose Arena for the hospital it y and fr iendly atmosphere.”

With competitors aged from 10 to 60, and from Victoria to the Queensland border, it was a positive weekend for the whole family.

MP voices concern with crime following recent offences Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan has expressed his disgust over the spate of break and enters in Moree and has called on the state government to urgently address the shortage of police in the region and review the way 10-to-14year-old offenders are dealt with in court.

Mr Moylan’s concerns follow recent incidents including an alleged break-in and vehicle pursuit as well as an alleged motel break-in, as reported in the North West Magazine last week.

“Like everyone in our community I am disgusted by the recent spate of break and enters in my hometown of Moree,” Mr Moylan said.

“Moree is my home and I have lived in town now for over 20 years and like many in our community I have been broken into previously and empathise with the innocent victims who have had their lives completely turned upside down.

“I am really pleased our local court has a new magistrate, and I am hopeful when our police catch these offenders, and they will be caught, they will be dealt with appropriately.

“Our local police do a good job, and we need the court to start dealing with offenders properly, so they are deterred from committing further offences and a message of general deterrence is sent throughout the community.”

Moree is my home and I have lived in town now for over 20 years and like many in our community I have been broken into previously and empathise with the innocent victims who have had their lives completely turned upside down.

Mr Moylan said one of the state’s biggest problems was the 2279 police vacancies across NSW, representing a vacancy rate of approximately 12 per cent.

“There were recently 1362 police officers on long-term sick leave in NSW, which takes the total police officer shortage when added to vacancies to nearly 20 per cent.

“These vacancies are impacting the ability of police right across NSW, not just Moree to protect our communities.

“The state government needs to do more to address these vacancies.”

Mark Coulton urges common sense on agricultural chemical decisions Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton has spoken out in parliament in support of the use of paraquat in modern farming practises.

Mr Coulton, speaking in support of a motion moved by his Nationals colleague, Member for Mallee Dr Anne Webster, said farmers throughout the Parkes electorate rely on paraquat to be able to farm in an environmentally friendly and financially viable manner.

“I speak with practical experience in the use of paraquat,” Mr Coulton said during his speech.

“In my previous role as a grain farmer, we would use that in what’s known as a double knock. The glyphosate would take out a lot of the weeds, but the harder to kill ones would need another application, this time of paraquat, to finish them up.

“The reason that we have the biggest wheat crops on record ever harvested is the technique of growing wheat in western New South Wales, and that’s using zero till.

“We’re not ploughing or cultivating; we’re just preserving the trash from the previous crop on top of the ground. It reflects the light and the heat, and it conserves the moisture.

“We hear a lot of talk in this place

about carbon farming … the farmers in my electorate have been doing this for decades. They pioneered this process.”

Dr Webster’s Private Members’ motion urges the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) and the Minister for Agriculture to listen to farmers and the science on herbicide dosages and refrain from rewarding sensationalist journalism.

The motion comes following an ABC Landline story which aired in August-September about the use of paraquat and diquat, and alleged links to neurological diseases.

Mr Coulton said while he has sympathy for those interviewed by the ABC who believe paraquat may be behind their Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis, times have changed, and historical practises of chemical use are no longer occurring today.

He said farmers now apply herbicides in a safe and protected environment, with limited exposure to the chemicals.

“He [the man interviewed by the ABC] also said he was soaked in this chemical,” Mr Coulton said.

“If you soaked yourself every day in petrol, you probably wouldn't be all that healthy, but we're not

banning petrol. If mechanics tipped battery acid over their heads while installing batteries into cars, it probably wouldn’t do them much good either, but we're not banning batteries. This is the same. When I used paraquat, I wore rubber gloves and a longsleeved shirt. It was towed by a tractor with a carbon filtered cab - everything as per the recommendation.

“If you follow those recommendations, it is a safe chemical to use. It's an essential one. We need to make sure we don't have these knee-jerk reactions from people on the fringes of things.”

Mr Coulton has also called for the APVMA to lift its game, urging the regulator to approve the release of Victrato for the treatment of crown rot.

“Crown rot is a very, very insidious issue with wheat, which remains largely unknown until the crops mature, and then the yield just falls away,” Mr Coulton said.

“For the last 12 months or so, I've been talking with farmers and

suppliers in my electorate Victrato. The significant trials of Victrato that have been done by Syngenta with local firm McGregor Gourlay over five years have shown considerable improvement in yield potential by controlling crown rot.”

It was hoped that this product would be released this year, but growers and suppliers in the Parkes electorate were disappointed to learn recently that the release of Victrato has once again been delayed and will not be available for the 2025 cropping season due to efficacy issues, not potential environmental impacts.

Mr Coulton said if Victrato won’t have any ill effects and the delay is only about efficacy, why not release it and let the market decide whether it works or not.

“I'm not saying we take shortcuts,” Mr Coulton said. “I'm not saying that chemicals shouldn't be properly scrutinised. But there is no need to drag things out unnecessarily when it's affecting the viability and potential profitability of farmers in Australia.”

Changed traffic conditions are underway on the Terry Hie Hie Road between Sadowa Road and Gravesend Road with roadworks underway. Moree Plains Shire Council issued an update, stating works had started on Tuesday, November 12.

The work, to be completed will include geotechnical investigations, surveying and, utility investigations and biodiversity studies. Work will be carried out between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Sunday and is expected to be completed in four weeks, weather permitting.

Changed traffic conditions including intermittent stop/slow and a reduced speed limit of 40kmh may be in place during work hours. Motorists should allow for extra travel time.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signage.

Police arrest four MPs voices concerns about crime people in cross border operation Continued from front page

Four people have been arrested as part of a joint cross border operation with NSW Police and Queensland Police.

Operation Regional Mongoose is a high-visibility police operation to tackle serious property-related crime, committed predominately by young offenders.

The operation ran from Tuesday, October 29 to Thursday, October 31, focusing on the townships of Boggabilla and Goondiwindi.

Police conducted searches of 15 properties and 15 vehicles.

During the three-day operation, four people were arrested and charged with a total of 20 offences.

On Wednesday, October 30, police arrested a 42-year-old man in Boggabilla.

He was charged with two counts of stalk/ intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (domestic), possess prohibited drug and breach of bail. He was refused bail to appear before Inverell Local Court on Thursday, October 31, where he was refused bail to appear before the same court on Friday, November 1. He was refused bail to appear before Moree Local Court on Monday, December 2.

On Wednesday, October 30, police arrested a 16-year-old boy in Boggabilla, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant in Queensland for 13 offences. He faced a children’s court on Thursday, October 31, where Queensland Police applied for his extradition, which was granted.

On Thursday, October 31, a 32-year-old woman was arrested in Boggabilla on an outstanding warrant and was charged with contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (domestic) and common assault (domestic). She was refused bail to appear before Inverell Local Court on Friday, November 1, where she was granted conditional bail to appear before Boggabilla Local Court on Wednesday, December 4.

Western Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Andrew Holland, said Operation Regional Mongoose will continue to disrupt and investigate crime in the border region.

“Operation Regional Mongoose has already seen hundreds of people being arrested and charged with a range of offences,” Asst Comm Holland said.

“Police will continue to patrol border towns in an effort to detect crime and keep those communities safe.”

Inquiries under Operation Regional Mongoose continue.

Mr Moylan said the state government should also seriously consider the current laws surrounding children and criminal intent, what lawyers, courts, and police call Doli Incapax.

“Doli incapax describes the inability of children under the minimum age of criminal responsibility to form criminal intent.

The minimum age of criminal responsibility in NSW is currently 10 years,” he said.

“However, in NSW where a child is aged over 10 years but under 14, there is a common law presumption of Doli incapax.

“This means the prosecution (the police) is required to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the child, at the time of doing the act, knew it was seriously wrong as a matter of morality, or according to the ordinary principles of reasonable persons and not merely naughty or mischievous.

“It also means it is extremely hard for the police to win a case against anyone

aged under 14 years.

“It just beggars’ belief. How can a 13-yearold who has been charged by police numerous times state that he/she did not know breaking into a house is a serious crime?”

Mr Moylan said he would like to see the state government take this onus off the police and place it on the defendant. If a defendant claims he or she did not know breaking into a house was a criminal act, then they should be the one to prove it.

“Another glaring concern that must be addressed is Moree has received a lot of NSW taxpayers’ money to deal with the crime issues in our town and we need to ask if all that money is working,” he said.

“I would love to see a breakdown or an audit of all the federal and state money that is going into services in Moree so we as community members can see whether all this money is actually achieving any results.”



Need for rural Australians to talk mental health

When Chantal Corish set up a psychology practice in a farming town of 10,000 people, she was told it was destined to fail.

People willing to be open about their challenges in a small rural community? Not likely, or so the locals reckoned.

"A lot of people said to me, 'Nobody is going to talk to you, nobody talks about their mental health, it's something we keep behind closed doors'," Ms Corish said.

Yet soon after opening her clinic in Goondiwindi, on the NSW-Queensland border, she was inundated with new clients

every week.

“It surprised me,” she said.

“There was a great need.”

Ms Corish, who lives on a cotton farm with her family, is part of a research team encouraging farmers to open up and re-think the stereotypical tough-as-nails approach to life on the land.

Backed by the Cotton Research Development Corporation, she is doing a PhD investigating how psychological safety on farms can boost worker performance and employee retention.

“It's an industry of entrepreneurs and people who are really passionate about farming. “(They) get into it because they love farming, not necessarily because they love running teams.”

“It's about professionalising agriculture in terms of having safer, healthier, more productive workplaces,” Dr McDonald said.

Whip, Rev & Barrel set for world premiere at Pallamallawa Throughout 2024, Merri-May Gill (local filmmaker from Two Dog Films) has devoted thousands of hours to filming and editing a one-hour documentary film, titled: Whip, Rev & Barrel, which features local bullwhip-cracker Lisa Whibley (from Pallamallawa), enduro motorbike rider Julie Denyer (Moree) and barrel-racer Anna Heitzmann (Tullamore NSW).

As Merri-May says: “These three women have followed their ‘slightly dangerous passions’, as far afield as Mt Isa Rodeo QLD and Deniliquin Ute Muster VIC … so make sure you see Whip, Rev & Barrel, to find out why these girls love their adventurous sports so much.”

Merri-May’s stunning footage and background music choices further enhance the already fascinating set of events she has captured, to make a film everyone west of the Great Dividing Range will be able to relate to and really enjoy.

Merri-May says: “It’s about capturing rural life at that time when your kids have grown up just enough that you have a little bit of time for your own hobbies again – although, of course – not everyone has hobbies that are as ‘slightly dangerous’ as these three women in Whip, Rev & Barrel!” Some other locals also make cameo appearances in the film – including Pallamallawa’s Kerry Whibley, plus Andrew Pitman, Wendy Caban, David ‘Kelpie’ Shelton and Col Thomas from Moree.

Merri-May Gill won first prize at Northwest Film Festival for her drought-breakingly humorous short film Golden BS – which received over 100,000 views on social media. Merri-May also moved Australia’s film icon Rachel Ward (of The Thorn Birds) to say: “I wish I had a hundred more projects and we could hit the road again tomorrow”, after Merri-May spent two weeks filming Rachel for her recent film Ra-
