in full bloom The team behind the Coonabarabran Times is thrilled to announce the arrival of its new publication - “wattle” magazine.

Designed and published by the Coonabarabran Times, wattle is the first magazine of its kind in the Warrumbungle region – a luxurious print publication with a focus on creativity, culture and community in the bush.

Like the resilient native flower from which it takes its name, wattle is vibrant, beautiful and uniquely local.

Editor, Kait Britton, said the project had been a labour of love.

Rain, rain go away!

Last week’s wet weather saturated flood-fatigued areas and caused havoc in regional communities.

by EMMA HARVEY Heavy rainfall continued to drench rainweary parts of NSW last weekend as a massive rain event moved across the stat e, resu lti ng i n w idespread f lash flooding and significant road closures.

He av y r a i n f a l l wa s experienced right across inland NSW, specifically Central Western Slopes and Central Tablelands.

Hardest hit were communities in Mudgee, D ubb o a nd B at hu r s t , which experienced significant flooding from local river systems, with t he M a c q u a r i e R i v e r peaking at 4.9 metres in Bathurst on Sunday.

rainfall that continued u nti l ea rly Su nday morning.

Coonabarabran recorded up to 76mm of rain over four days from Thursday, 6 October, to Sunday, 9 October, with around 65mm recorded on Saturday alone.

The local road network was significantly affected by the weather, w ith r oad closu res i n all directions, isolating sma l ler c om mu n it ies , cutti ng of f residences and stranding travellers.

Notably, Satu rday ’s rain fall caused a major la ndsl ip on the C a st ler e ag h H i g hway between Cullen Bullen and Capertee that lead to closures in both directions.

Warrumbungle Shire C ou n c i l h a s r e c e nt ly b e e n aw a r d e d mu c h needed funding from the Federal Government and

the NSW Government, which have granted $13 million for road damage r epa i r a s pa r t of t he jointly-funded Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Local, regional a nd s t at e r o ad s h ave been scheduled for maintenance across the Wa r r u m b u n g l e r o a d network.

Drivers should allow for extra travel time and drive to the conditions.

Worries for wet wildlife The impact of recent wet weather on people and farm animals has been heavy, but native wildlife is also facing habitat damage, loss of food sources and ill health.

Ta nya O ’ D onough , f r o m Wa r r u m b u n g l e Wi ld l i fe R escue a nd Rehabilitation said floods and heavy rain negatively impacts animals as much as drought.

“With flooding it’s not so much the event itself; it’s the weeks after the floods when we will start to see more and more sick and injured wildlife,” she said.

“Our wildlife die from stress.

“If some roos become too isolated from the flood waters, or even if there’s just a heap of heavy rain and they are wet and cold for too long - the stress can kill them.

“The lactic acid builds up in them and they can d ie a s low, a g on i s i n g death.”

Food sources can also be lost and remaining food supplies can be low i n nut r ie nt s , l e av i n g animals malnour ished and causing sickness and diarrhoea.

Ms O ’ Donough has predicted heavy losses

when it comes to wombats in the area.

She said many of them have burrows along the banks of the Merrygoen River and believes many wou ld h ave d r ow ned in the fast-rising f lood waters. “ I f they d id happen to get out in time they would be looking for cover somewhere, so they could e nd up u nde r ne a r by houses,” Ms O’Donough said.

She said it was a good time to remind the public o f t h e i mp o r t a n c e o f helping the cause through m a k i n g d o n at i o n s o r volunteering time.

“In the coming weeks I ’m e x p e c t i n g t o g e t really busy with sick and injured wildlife coming in, so if anyone wants to help out they can by visit the Warrumbungle Wi ld l i fe R escue a nd Rehabilitation Facebook page for further details and contact numbers.”

Facilities at Warrumbungle Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation have become inundated with water, with many fences and other infrastructure destroyed by flood waters.

Change in the wind Modifications to a large-scale wind-farm proposal at Coolah becoming a concern for local residents.

by EMMA HARVEY On Thursday, 6 October, close to 200 people attended a meeting at the Coolah Sporting Club to hear from a community group, in plain language, details of the proposed wind turbine projects and associated transmission lines.

The Coolah district has been slated to receive two wind farm developments - T I LT R enewables “ Liverpool Range” and ACEN Australia “Valley of the Wi nds ”, w ith a c ombi ne d c over age of appr ox i mat ely 21,0 0 0

hectares.

R e c ent ly, T I LT Renewables submitted a modified application which involves amendments to infrastructure, increase in native vegetation clearing limit and increase in the size of the turbines from 165 metres to 250m.

C o m mu n i t y g r o u p , Ua rbr y/ Tong y L a ne Alliance, is objecting to the modification proposal for the Liverpool Range w ind fa rm, which they argue is beyond the scope of a modification to the initial 2010 project and more comparable to a new

project.

Among those in attendance at the meeting were Warrumbungle Shire Council representatives, mayor Ambrose Doolan, deput y mayor A n iel lo Iannuzzi, and Cr Kathryn Rindfleish.

Locals at the meeting were troubled by both developments , citi ng impacts such as noise disturbance, reduction in land and house values, and permanent visual changes to the landscape.

There was also concern about the environmental impact of construction,

i n c lud i n g r em o v a l o f critically endangered box gum woodland and the destruction of already endangered Regent Honeyeater habitat.

I n a comment si nce the meeting, Cr Doolan validated the community’s concerns stating, “some of the assumptions have been a bit breezy. It affects our people, it affects our roads.

“We are in an alliance with similarly affected councils, so that we can help each other and learn from each other. We are lobbying states and politicians for more resources. It’s about

not getting stomped on.”

O n M ond ay, 10 October, Council submitted its objections to the development, which centres the “cumulative effects” of the wind farms on the community, and asks for the eventua l decommission of the farms to be considered with local interests in mind.

“I don’t know that we can stop this - it’s a statesignificant development,” Cr Doolan said. “ But we have lodged objections, which gets us a seat at the table so that we can be part of discussions.”

Residents in Coolah have voiced their concerns over modifications to the TILT Renewables “Liverpool Range” windfarm proposal.

PUBLIC HEARING: RECLASSIFICATION OF LAND PLANNING PROPOSAL Council will be holding a Public Hearing relating to the Planning Proposal of Reclassification of Land. VRA recruits complete specialised training Coonabarabran Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) has received a massive boost to its regional effectiveness, with five new members recently completing training.

by CHRIS WARD On Monday, 8 October, the five local members plus a member from Narrabri conducted urban search and rescue training at the Coonabarabran waste depot.

The training provided new members with many of the skills needed to conduct a search-andrescue scenario as they scoured the rubble in an attempt to locate mock victims.

Previously, the crew completed three days of RCR - or Road Crash Rescue.

They were trained in standard operating procedures to gain access to cars, training with equipment and safety in regards to different scenarios, and working with electric cars. They were also run through

their paces with an industrial and domestic component, which means crews were trained in scenarios concerning heavy machinery and farm equipment. The domestic training provided skills to deal with home accident call outs.

The completion of this training means the participants can now respond and be involved with emergency call outs.

VRA senior member, Tony Cole said the new members gaining their credentials was an enormous boost, not just for the organisation but for the town as a whole.

“What it means is we have almost doubled our capacity of rescue operators,” Mr Cole said.

“We have always managed in the past with the numbers we’ve had,

but it really cements the fact that we will be able to continue to provide the service for 24 hours a day.

“It provides us with a little breathing space.”

While the number of operators had drastically increased, Mr Cole said the organisation was still looking for more members to join and complete the required training.

“We’re looking for people with the attitude of wanting to help others,” he said.

“People who are willing to give up some of their time to attend training.

Everything is supplied, they just need to bring themselves and the right attitude.”

A memorial event was held at the Warrumbungle National Park Visitor Centre on Tuesday, 11 October, marking 41 years since a tragic helicopter crash in the Warrumbungles claimed one life. Survivors, rescuers, friends and family came together on the occasion to remember the loss of Ian Mahood and give thanks to the rescuers and community for saving the lives of Chris Martin (pictured adressing the crowd), Leong Lim and Allan Adamson under very difficult circumstances. Cattle prices in WA shift after stronger sales.

Some wet weather moving into next week could tighten supply in the saleyards.

The light lamb indicator continues to strengthen as processors maintain demand for new season lambs.

Slaughter numbers have returned to seasonal norms after the string of public holidays.

Indicators Total cattle yardings have softened 31 per cent week-on-week after the strong yardings seen last week. This, along with the recent public holidays and rain events, has impacted t h e nu m b e r s m o v i n g through the yards.

Pastoral cattle sales in WA have softened 11 per cent week-on-week and 6 8 per cent since July, although there has been a strong general improvement in prices in the state across the board. This was evident at Muchea, with the feeder steer prices at the saleyard improving 14¢ week-onweek.

Cattle Indicator (WYCI) has streng thened 3 9¢ we ek- on-we ek w it h a strong sale from Mount Barker contributing 73 per cent to the indicator.

A lthough Muchea is trading under the state indicator this is still a strengthening of prices at the saleyard. Prices have improved 64¢ weekon-week.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) has softened 35¢ week-on-week with a price correction from last week’s strong sales. The indicator now sits at 1,039¢/kg cwt.

Wagga Wagga had an ex tremely strong sa le even though there were tighter yardings. T his

week, Wagga took out the top average price for the restocker lamb indicator, trading at 246¢/kg cwt above the national average.

Top trade lamb prices were also seen at Wagga Wagga, where trade lambs fetched 820.19¢/ kg cwt. These strong prices allowed the trade lamb indicator to improve nationally.

at 361,568 head while sheep slaughter was at 112,892 head, or 14 per cent below year ago levels.

I nt e r e s t i n g l y, g o at slaughter has seen a large uptick of 45 per cent weekon-week with Victor ia coming back online. One thing that can be noted is the large increase in goat slaughter in SA, where there has been a 222 per cent increase in numbers from six weeks ago and a 487 per cent increase on year-ago levels. Sandstone Caves hold clues to the past A day spent walking the Yaminbah Trail and learning about the Sandstone Caves revealed a beautiful yet fragile history.

by JIMMY WHALAN O n We d n e s d a y, 2 8 September, a g roup of school students a nd c om mu n it y memb er s travelled to Sandstone C av e s i n t h e P i l l i g a Nature Reserve to walk the Yaminbah Trail in celebration of NAIDOC. Warrumbungle Shire C ou nc i l wa s pr ov ided grant funds from Aboriginal Affairs NSW to host this event as part of NAIDOC celebrations in 2021, but the activity was postponed several times due to COVID.

However, t he event eventually went ahead at the end of September, with attendees agreeing it was a great day to appreciate the beauty of the caves a nd a c k n owl e d g e t he thousa nd s of yea rs of Aboriginal history that they hold.

Gamilaroi local, Uncle Dave Sulter guided the expedition, sharing his connection to the land and offering his knowledge on the sig n i f ica nce of Sa ndst one Caves t o Aboriginal people.

This included the use of the caves for sharpening

stone axes and other tools by grinding them against the sandstone, which is evident in the grooves left in the stone.

Attendees also learned about the fragility of the site, as steel cages have been installed over many of the caves along the trail, an action that was required due to graffiti and other forms of vandalism.

It was a great day to get out a nd enjoy the scenery and to appreciate the long history that lies w ith i n the S a nd st one Caves.

Grinding grooves at the Sandstone Caves are evidence of the deep history of Aboriginal people in the area.

A recent visit to Sandstone Caves, led by Uncle Dave Sulter, focused on the history of the Aboriginal people.

Rumour has it: magpie takes cats and dogs Swooping magpies have prompted joggers and bike riders to be alert, but a magpie lifting cats and dogs from the ground has caused one resident to be very alarmed.

by EMMA HARVEY When I call my ‘source’ to shed some light on the recent magpie story that’s been circulating around town, the first thing I ask is: “This is a joke, right?” “ N ot a j o ke !’ s a y s Coonabarabran local Emma Mills, thus confirming the terrifying rumour that the magpie nesting near her house has indeed scooped up both a cat and small dog in a matter of days.

The mythical magpie in question is well known to the Mills’ household.

It regularly stops by to thieve dog -food from their backyard.

T h a n k f u l l y, t h e M i l l s’ fa m i l y dog i s a 45-kilogram staghound and the pet-threatened bird doesn’t dare try it on.

The fi rst incident occurred when Emma was driving home from Woolwor ths, about to pull into her driveway on the corner of Eden and Namoi Streets. She watched in disbelief as the magpie gave chase to a small cat, before diving to collect it by the 6 - Coonabarabran Times, Thursday, 13th October 2022

tail and lifting it several feet into the air.

“The cat was swatting at it, t r y i n g to g et away. I messaged the group chat like, what is happening?” Emma says.

Acco rding to the official Coonabarabran T i mes ‘magpie map’, the territorial bird is likely the infamous Sid Vicious, who nests over the weir from Emma’s house and is known to patrol the wider area.

The next time Sid struck, Emma happened to glance out the kitchen w i n d ow at a wo m a n w ith a pram, walk ing her small dog off-lead.

T he com pact can i ne was an easy target, and Emma watched as the bird “sunk its claws into its butt” while the owner yelled and threw a stick at it.

Both animals escaped these encounters u n h a r m e d a n d, i n a power move that is either he roic o r i nsane, the woman and her pram continue to walk that same route most days.

Emma, however, isn’t taking any chances.

“We used to go for

walks, but not anymore!”

Prams, she says, make for a difficult getaway.

A s w e c h a t, t h e r e are a couple of gurgly i n t e r r u pt i o n s f r o m a polite, but insistent voice on the other end of the line. Ruby, Emma’s fouryea r- o ld daughte r, i s a s k i n g fo r a g l a s s of water.

“We’re having a muma n d - d a u g h t e r d a y,” says Emma. “Tea party, Bluey.”

W h e n y o u’ r e h e l d h os ta g e i n yo u r ow n home, I guess you have to make the most of it.

Ruby pipes up again, requesting that they get a start on the scrambled eggs and, as Emma helps her crack the shells, it occurs to me that four-year-olds are not significantly bigger than most cats, or a small dog.

“Oh yes,” says Emma.

“We only leave the house in the car.”

Higher School Certificate ( HSC) exam season kicked off on Wednesday, 1 2 O c t o b e r, w i t h 3 4 C o o n a b a r a br a n H i g h School students sitting their first examination the mandatory English Paper One. The exams are held over four weeks, with more than 60,000 NSW students set to complete their HSC this year and over 120 different examinations being sat across the state.

English exams continue today with the second English paper beginning

this morning at 9.25am.

The exams will continue until Friday, 14 October, with the last exam being Modern History.

Students have been wel l-suppor t ed i n the lead-up to the HSC with examination preparation, including a comprehensive HSC Revision Workshop program held during the October school holidays.

Coonabarabran High School principal, Mary Doolan said that most students were keen to have the exams behind them and move onto the next stage of life.

“This cohort of students

have shown considerable resilience, given that their secondary studies have been marked by three years of COVID-fuelled disruption,” Ms Doolan said.

“We are very proud of all that they have achieved - both individually and as a very cohesive and supportive year group.”

Students will receive their HSC results via email and text message, as well as several documents that will be posted to students f r om N S W E duc at ion S t a n d a r d s A ut h o r i t y (NESA) outlining their achievements.

Community backs mental health fund-raiser More than $10,000 has been raised to help provide more people living in rural communities with the accessible mental health support they require.

By LIZ CUTTS Almost 200 party-goers of all ages rolled up for the Baradine Scrubbers Ball hosted by the Barad ine and Distr ict Progress Association at the town’s memorial hall on Saturday, 1 October.

As a result of overwhelming support, the funds raised f rom the event will be donated t o t wo ment a l he a lt h charities - Gotcha4Life and the Kindness Factory.

The donations will be used to help raise awareness and remove the stigma surrounding depression and mental-health issues in the region.

Event orga n iser, Eliza Bunner said she was delighted with the

success of the event and the important message it delivered about those experiencing a suicide or mental health related crisis. “ The tribute to Matt Dewson was just to highlight what a good guy he was and how everyone needs to keep an eye on their friends - especially the males in their life,” Eliza said.

“Checking in often on each other keeps everyone healthy and I don’t think there is a single person in the region that hasn’t been affected by mental health difficulties, whether it is their own experience or that of someone they know.

“The big takeaway that I wanted to provide is how kindness can change the

world. Even the smallest act , l i ke a sm i le or a conversation can change someone’s life. It all makes such a difference. I don’t think any of us realise the impact we have on people’s lives around us.

Not just the ones close to us, but those we have had i nt erac tions w ith throughout our lives.

“I believe it is vital to talk about our mental health openly and without fear of judgement, and the awesome support received through this event will help more and more people do just that.”

Eliza said she will be following up the charity donations to make sure the local community benefits from future programs. “ B oth cha r ities w i l l

put the money back into the community through programs they run and I will be having discussions w ith G ot cha4 L i fe a nd the K i nd ness Fac t or y over the next week or so t o ensu re that the programs are successfully implemented,” she said.

“For me, personally, it was such a special night to be part of. There was a beautiful feel about the evening and I’m just really grateful to everyone who turned up and those who supported the auction as well.”

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Coonabarabran Public I n S ept emb er, M s Mer ily n Nevell, the Itinerant Support, hear ing teacher at CPS, accompanied students A ng us a nd Ryan Young to represent Coonaba rabran P ublic School as they performed in the Combined Schools Signing Choir at the 2022 P rimar y P roms in the Sydney Town Hall.

Each year, the Arts Unit of the NSW Department of Education conducts this music festival, which brings together over 1600 students in a combined choir as well as individual school items over four concerts.

The Combined Signing Choir of about 50 students represented 13 schools from metropolitan, regional and rural NSW. This was the first time that two pieces of Auslaninspired repertoire was showcased and performed in the “ Br indabella Concert” - the first event of the concert series. The signing choir performed “ I Wa s H e r e ” ( L a d y A),then “Evening Star”, a commissioned piece by Australian composer Ms Rachel Kelly.

This was a wonderful experience for Angus and Ryan to perform in such an iconic building and in

front of an audience of 2000 people. They were practising their signing for weeks, even attending a rehearsal with the choir, via zoom, on a weekend.

A ngus and Ryan proudly represented their school and community and we are justif iably proud of the confidence

a nd c om m itment they have shown in being a pa r t of t h i s f a nt a st ic opportunity.

T hey have since performed the two songs at NextSense Gosford and for their class on their return from Sydney.

A few housekeepi ng matters for the beginning of term. Hats are part of the school uniform in term four. Our school hats are good protection against the harmful sun and look smart on the students.

They will be necessary in all outdoor activities, the playground, PE lessons, the Running Club and for sport - which will be swimming this term.

Staff and all students are very excited about swimming. Students will need swimmers, a towel a nd thongs a s we get

changed at school and walk down to the pool ready to dive in. It is a wonderful opportunity for many of our students to learn to be safe around the water and for those who can swim, to practice their stroke fitness.

We do have SPF cream at school but ask parents

to assist by applying it to students prior to leaving home. All students from Yea r 1 t o Yea r 6 w i l l be participating in the swimming prog ram.

At this increasing activity and the growing temperature we remind everyone to bring a drink bottle to school every day.

Hay goes up in flames

by CHRIS WARD A proper ty owner on the outsk i r ts of Coonabarabran lost approximately 100 bales of hay on Monday, 3 October, when a burn off got out of control.

Luckily, the blaze posed no threat to other homes in the area and was able to burn itself out without t oo much involvement from the local Rural Fire

Service (RFS).

About 10 hectares of land was affected by the fire.

Acting district manager of the RFS, Aaron Powell s a id it wa s a t i me ly reminder for residents to take every precaution when undertaking any type of burn.

“Whether it’s a rubbish fire or a burn off you must apply for a permit,” Mr Powell said.

More LGAs eligible for disaster assistance Fourteen local government areas in the Pa rkes electorate w i ll now be able t o ac cess disaster assistance for flooding that has occurred from September 14.

T he B ogan, B ou rke, Brewarrina, Dubbo, Gilgandra, Gunnedah, Gw ydir, L achlan, M or e e P l a i n s , Na r rabr i , Na r r om i ne, Wa l g e t t , Wa r r en a nd Warrumbungle LGAs are all eligible for assistance, wh ich w i l l c ome a s a great relief, particularly as most of these areas are currently experiencing flooding.

A nu m b e r o f t h e s e LGAs were also disaster declared in August, so it has been a challenging few months. Hopefully this assistance will go some way to helping with the recovery, especially for councils to repair the i nc r e a si n g nu mb er of roads damaged by the wet weather.

A ssistance available under the CommonwealthState Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements includes: • Help for residents whose homes or belongings were damaged; • S upp or t for lo c a l c ou nc i l s t o help w it h the costs of cleaning up and restoring damaged

essential public assets; • Concessional interest rat e loa ns for sma l l businesses, pr ima r y producers and non-profit organisations; • Freight subsidies for primary producers.

Call for funding to repair waterdamaged roads O u r r e g ion a l r o ad s are suffering as a result of t he r elent le s s r a i n and f looding that we’ve experienced across the Pa rkes ele c t orat e i n recent months. This issue will only continue over the summer months as we enter our third L a Niña wet season in a row, with already full dams, over f low ing r iver ways and saturated grounds.

Having driven thousands of kilometres throughout the electorate over the past few months, I’ve seen first-hand just how bad some of the roads are - they’re a real danger and are in urgent need of repairs for the safety of all road users.

H o w e v e r, o u r l o c a l councils’ resources are stret ched, and it is becoming increasingly d i f f icu lt for them t o maintain roads due to the combination of wet weather a nd lack of funding.

I ’m c a l l i n g f o r t h e Labor Government to look into providing measures for local councils to

fund these much-needed repairs, and have written to Infrastructure Minister Catherine King to highlight this issue.

An emergency r oad repa i r prog ra m would complement the successf u l L oca l Roads and Community Infrastructure and Roads to Recovery programs, ensuring these dangerous roads are fixed as soon as possible.

Biking for dementia David Batterham has cycled his way from Griffith to Coonabarabran on his journey around the countryside to raise awareness of dementia.

by CHRIS WARD A f t er over -n ight i ng in Baradine, Mr Batterham peddled into Coonabarabran on T ue s d ay, 11 O c t o b er, before setting off again on Wednesday bound for Tamworth.

He will eventually finish the 1700 plus kilometre ride at his home town of Goondiwindi.

All funds raised during his trip will be donated to Dementia Australia, a charity organisation close

to Mr Batterham’s heart.

His mother, Dianne, was diagnosed with the medical condition in 2019 and said he wanted to do what he could to support the dementia awareness and research.

Hopefully the hardest part of the trip is behind h im, hav i ng t o cycled through a thunderstorms b e t we e n Wa r r e n a nd Gilgandra. “ It absolutely pelted dow n ,” M r B att erham said.

“I’ve had to add about

90 kilometres to the trip so far to get around the flooded roads.

“But so far the response from everyone has been fantastic.

It doesn’t matter which t ow n I ’ v e s t o pp e d at everyone has been great.”

A nd that i ncludes the reaction from Coonabarabran with the Imperial Hotel putting Mr Batterham up for the night and providing a free dinner.

At the time of talking to the Coonabarabran Times,

Mr Batterham was unsure of the route he would take to get to Tamworth.

He w a s t o s s i n g up d i f ferent routes in an attempt to avoid as much traffic as possible. “ It ’s on ly r e a l ly dangerous when there is a big line of traffic and the drivers a few cars back can’t see me,” he said.

“It’s not too bad, but I want to avoid it where I can.”

WEATHER WATCH F u r ther heav y ra i n fell at many places in our regions the last few days.

Coonabarabran recorded 61.5mms to last Saturday morning, 8 October. This was the wettest October day since 62.7mms fell on October 10th 1973. To date, 951mms has fallen this year in Coonabarabran and will reach 1000mms by late November for the third successive year, matching the three successive years of over 1000mms which happened from 1889 to 1891 in Coonabarabran.

Dubbo has had over 10 0 m m s a l r e ady t h i s mont h a nd on t op o f 112mms in August and 105mms in September, it is the first time in 148 years

of records that all these three months had over 100mms in the same year.

It did previously come close in 1879 and 1906, which did lead to a very cold and wet November in both those years.

Bourke has had 10 6 .4 m ms du r i ng the first nine days of October including a fall of 45.4mms on 6 October, which was the town’ wettest October day since 49.8mms in 1934. It is already Bourke's wettest October since 1955, when 154mms was recorded.

Other wetter Octobers to date were 125mms in 1950 and 109mms in 1934.

Sydney was belted by over 15 0mms ra i n fa l l during the last six days,

taking the yearly total to 2304mms (92 inches).

The October total to date at 205mms is the wettest since 234mms in 2004.

L ooking at prev ious very wet years in Sydney when high rainfall was recorded in July and later high October rainfall in the same year, like this year, these occurred in 1877, 1892, 1950,1952, 1959, 1976 and 1999. Out of these past episodes there is a good chance that Sydney may record 2540mms, or 100 inches, altogether for the first time .

Most months following these episodes i n ou r regions will have aboveaverage rainfalls, particularly in November 2022 and February and March in 2023. It appears December may also be rather wet in Victoria.

There has been a notable absence of sig n i f icant warmer-than-average days in our regions since the end of July. The highest temperature in Coonabarabran has not

exceeded 24 degrees to date this month and if the highest temperature does not reach 25 degrees by the third week of this October, it will be for the first time since 1949 this has happened, after which notably hot days did arrive until late December.

Most of Victoria has also experienced a lack of warm days of over 24 degrees for September and so far this month, which also happened back in 2010 and before that in 1992.

Despite very wet conditions from October t h r ou g h t o Fe br u a r y a f t er b oth 19 9 2 a nd 2010, the summer season was warmer than usual, with high frequency of thunderstorms and flash flooding.

Another low-pressure c o mpl e x i s c u r r e nt l y approaching from south of WA and looks set to pr ov ide mor e ma i n ly, patchy rainfalls in our regions.

Kids rock out in the school holidays Truckloads of school holiday fun was delivered to students in the Warrumbungle Shire in the form of rock climbing walls, provided by a NSW Government program.

One of the most popular attractions included the Base Zero Rock Climbing Wall that was transported

to Mendooran, Dunedoo, C o o l a h , B i n n aw ay, Coonabarabran and Baradine from Tuesday to Thursday last week.

Funding was provided by the NSW Government R eg iona l NS W Spr i ng Hol id ay P r og ra m t o del iver scho ol hol iday activ ities across the Shire.

set up was enjoyed by over 220 children who were eager to ta ke on the cha l leng i ng cl i mb to the top of the wall, with participants gaining skills and confidence by taking on the challenge.

There was a climb for all skill levels, with different sides of the wall providing easier to more difficult climbs, so everyone could have a go regardless of their climbing skills.

Students who attended found that it was a great way to get out of the house and have some fun during the holidays.

Tuesday, 4 October Nine veteran golfers took part in the Coonabarabran Golf Club’s Tuesday competition on 4 October, played in great spring conditions.

John Davis was the winner with a net 32, with Dave Bunyan the runner up with a net 33.

Only one game of bowls was played at the Coonabarabran Bowling Club on Sunday, 9 October.

In this game of triples, Vi nce C ol l i ns, Peter Watton and Will defeated John Davis, Tony Antaw and Tony “the taximan” in a game that was close until the final few ends.

Congratulations to Pod Phillips and partner who took home some money at the big Forbes Bowling Carnival held over the long weekend.

They only lost one game, so were unlucky not to make the final.

Coincidently, the winner was former Coonabarabran

resident Troy Dicks, and partner.

The spate of abandoned race meetings over recent months due t o ra i na f fe c t ed t rack s is not overly unusual in both the country and metropolitan areas.

This columnist penned the following report of a race meeti ng i n the central west during June 1989.

Wet weather continued to play havoc with race meeti ngs th roughout NSW, however, Parkes, a fter two successive washouts, staged a

meeting at late notice on Wednesday, 5 July 1989.

Despite bitterly cold c ond it ion s , on- c ou r s e bookmakers held $167,0 0 0 a nd le ad i ng Kembla bookmaker Greg Purcell said his turnover at Parkes was in excess of his average Saturday holdings at coastal tracks.

The big plunge of the day was on Groovy Girl ($9 to $2 favourite), however, g iven ever y chance by Chris Parsonage could only manage third behind Talimba (Jane Parsons, $2 . 8 0) a nd B old Ca fe ( Dale Jeffries, $34) in the 800 metres Maiden Handicap.

Talimba, trained by the winning jockey’s father, Doug Spence at Cowra, is owned by Lloyd Collier, a farmer from the Bogan Gate-Trundle area who also part owns Bongo Red, winner of the 1000 metres Improvers Handicap.

outings when cruising home from Mighty Sweet (Bill Aspros, $2.80 fav) and Absolute Integrity (Peter W. Stanley, $13).

Mathew Cahill, riding in superb form, notched up another treble, his winners being Mr Jinx ($4), trained by Wayne Davey at Cowra; Lapstead ($2), tra i ned by L es Thomas at Molong; and Idle Version ($3), trained

by Viv Miller at Cowra.

I n-form apprentice Rob Moses scored on the Deidre Stein, Bathursttrained Cargo Road ($9), while Bill Aspros brought M e x i c a n G l ow ($ 5 t o $3.50) with a late run to overhaul his Stein-trained stablemate Shining Lover (Graeme Robson, $2.20 to $2 favourite) in the final two strides of the 2200 metres Rural Stakes.

Several of the jockeys and trainers mentioned in the above story are very well known to race goers and some are still active in racing including former successful jockey and now Wellington trainer Peter W. Stanley, who won the 2021 Mudgee Cup, a Big Dance Eligibility Race

with his $600 horse Not Negotiating.

Cowra-based Mathew Cahill, who is presently recovering from serious i nju r ie s s u s t a i ne d i n a race fall in April at Ca nber ra , has been a long-time champion jockey with a tremendous country and city record.

Their daughter, Tiffany Jeffries, recently retired after riding close to 200 winners and rode winners in Sydney and Brisbane.

During a distinguished career, Dale Jeffries rode the winner of every Cup at central west tracks and is now an apprentice jockey mentor.

Molong trainer L es T homas had a n out st a nd i n g spr i nt er, Lapstead, which twice came back from extremely ser ious i nju r ies a nd won over a dozen races including Town Plates.

L es T homa s a lways gave a lot of cred it to Malcolm Orringe, who assisted with the horses for more than 25 years.

Bathurst trainer Deidre Stein, who had several top gallopers, won the G1 Cox Plate at Mooney Valley with Rising Prince.

Graeme Robson was a very strong and successful metropolitan jockey who later moved to ride from Dubbo.

Blinding score on wet golf course

THE COONABARABRAN JOCKEY CLUB PRESENTS

Some of the best scores recorded by the lady golfers at the Coonabarabran Golf Club this year were submitted by on saturated fairways and treacherous greens last week.

LADIES’ GOLF Jan Keppie stormed in with an amazing net 69 in a stroke event for the Coonabarabran Bakery monthly medal. The nextbest score (daylight), a net 75, was tabled by Michelle Murphy - another very good score. Both of these girls are in top form.

Jan also won nearest the pin on the 4/13th and Michelle followed suit, winning nearest the pin for two on the 8/17th hole.

We had a very excited handicapper seen rubbing

her hands together with an ear-to-ear grin on her face. Well done girls. Jan parred three holes - the 9th, 13th and 16th.

The second round for this event has been rescheduled for Saturday, 15 October. T he Coonabarabran Bakery sponsored this month’s M o nt h l y M e d a l . We sincerely thank Adam and Jenna for their generosity and continuing support.

Harris scoops league awards A Coonabarabran-based rugby league player has taken out a swag of awards at the recent Gilgandra Panthers presentation night held on Saturday, 8 October.

by CHRIS WARD Anthony Harris turned out for the Panthers this y e a r, a f t e r t h e l o c a l Coonabarabran Unicorns were unable to form a team in the Castlereagh League Competition.

T han ks la rgely to Harris’s leadership and workload up front, the pr op helped st eer the Panthers to a grand-final appearance against the Cobar Roosters.

It was a highlyenter taining a ffair that came down to the wire, with the Roosters securing the win in the final minute of the game.

Harris said he left the field feeling devastated after the defeat, but has since moved his focus to a return to the blue and gold in 2023.

“It was a really good year with the Panthers,” Harris said.

“They are a really goodquality club and team, but I’d like to play for Coonabarabran next year.

“I think Coona will be able to form a team and by all accounts it should be a pretty competitive side too.”

Despite his strong roots with Coonabarabran, the work horse took out the Group Player of the Year on the day of the final,

and was recently awarded the Panthers Best and Fairest, Players’ Player and the Old Boys Player of the Year at Gilgandra’s awards’ night.

H a r r i s sa id he wa s buoyed by the motivation t o pl ay a lon g side h i s brother and father in 2023 when the trio will don Unicorn colours.

“My younger brother is going to play and my dad said he’d help out when needed to,” Harris said.

“So that's going to be a really cool experience to play alongside them – it will be the first time we’ve all played together.”

H a r r i s s a id he h ad played rugby league since the under sixes and was selected for first grade at just 17 years of age.

H e h a s p l ay e d t h e majority of his career in the Castlereagh League Competition, w ith the exception of one year when he turned out for Wee Waa in Group 4. “ I ’m r e a l ly lo ok i n g forward to next year and seeing footy return to Coonabarabran,” Harris said.

“Coona won the comp in 2019...it wasn’t that long ago.”

Plant Breeding Institute hosts field day and special book launch

More than 250 people flocked to The University of Sydney’s Plant Breeding Institute field and open day in September at the I.A Watson Grains Research Centre, Narrabri.

The popular event was sadly cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19 restrictions, but its highly anticipated return this year held special significance because it was also a belated 60th anniversary celebration of Australia’s first grower initiated and owned wheat research institute, with a book launch to mark the occasion.

In 1961, then Prime Minister Robert Menzies visited Narrabri to officially open the University of Sydney’s North West Wheat Research Institute.

Celebrating 60 years of wheat research in the North West Continued from front page

The achievements and reputation of the institute have grown over the decades, and today it is one of the most recognised agricultural research establishments in the world.

Known locally as the ‘Wheat Research’, the institute has undergone name changes over the years, to better reflect its broadening research focus from wheat to grains.

In 1977, the institute was renamed The University of Sydney’s Plant Breeding Institute I.A Wheat Research Centre in honour of Professor I.A Watson, a professor of agricultural botany (plant breeding) from 1962 to 1977.

Former director of the centre Dr Lindsay O’Brien, the longest serving on-site director at Narrabri (1988-2001), has produced a book to coincide with the anniversary: titled, ‘The First 60 Years – a history of Australia’s first grower initiated and owned wheat research institute’. The hard work Dr O’Brien has poured into producing such a valuable account of history is not dissimilar to harvesting a good crop, and his countless hours of research have paid off yielding a remarkable book that will be a treasured record for the agricultural sector, local farming families and residents, and present and past employees.

Dr O’Brien’s research included delving into The Courier newspaper archives to source critical information about how the institute has not only played a key role in the northern grains industry and agricultural developments but also its contribution to the local community.

“The institute was launched because growers wanted a research institute on the black soil plains

and the opportunity came with the passing of the Wheat Research Act in 1957,” said Dr O’Brien.

“This created a pool of finance.

It was agreed with growers there would be a levy on production and the Commonwealth would match that levy. Money raised in the state was used to fund research in NSW and Commonwealth money was used for national issues.

“Narrabri was the first of three grower-initiated research institutes under this funding model.

The second was set up in the early 60s in Toowoomba and later Victoria where I worked before I came to Narrabri.

“Varieties developed by the centre opened up production in North West NSW because of their rust resistance and ability to yield under the harsh conditions which exist. University bred varieties accounted for up to 30 percent of Australian production, and in this northwestern area, up to 80 percent of local production. That success has continued today.”

The region’s wheat farmers supported the work of the Institute.

“From the outset growers have provided land for trials at their cost, as part of their valuable collaboration with the University,” said Dr O’Brien.

“When we named Sunlin, for instance, we named it in honour of the Doolin family at North Star.

“Those long term relations are very important. The Carberrys at Narrabri, for example, have been involved in seed production for many years.”

At the book launch Dr O’Brien said, “This book is really a tribute to the visionary growers who established this place and had the foresight to invite The University of Sydney to operate their institute. This is also a tribute to all the

staff who carry out the work, and the benefits flow initially through to growers but also through to the communities in which they live, and so a tribute to all of those people. Thank you,” added Dr O’Brien.

The book launch was a highlight of the action-packed field day schedule, which started with a Welcome to Country by Gomilaroi man Les Knox and included a touching recital of Banjo Paterson’s ‘Song of the Wheat’ by St Francis Xavier’s Primary School students while attendees were treated to a barbecue lunch including plant-based burgers.

Dr Angela Pattsion chaired an informative question and answer session and the crowd heard from a panel of speakers including Dr Peter Carberry (GRDC), James Nalder (Coonamble farmer and WRF trustee), Rebecca Shephard (The University of Sydney), Greg Giblet (Outlook Ag) and Dr Meiqin Lu (AGT).

The field day was held on a perfectly sunny Spring day and in the afternoon, farmers, agricultural workers, professionals and researchers enjoyed walking through the trial plots and watching a series of demonstrations.

Magnificent looking crops in the field displays set a stunning backdrop with the ranges, featuring a wide variety from wheat, chickpeas and faba beans to the Indian mustard breeding program.

In his welcome address, director of the Plant Breeding Institute Professor Richard Trethowan praised the local researchers, partners and field day organising team.

native grains, animal resilience, robotics, crop genetics, agronomy, environmental sustainability, and indigenous culture.

“The long-term commitment of The University of Sydney to teaching and researching the big issues facing agriculture in Australia, has never been stronger.

“The focus of this field day is ‘Evolution of Grains’. As our climate changes and global markets become less reliable in an ever-changing world, there will be impacts on our food supply chains and grains will not be immune.

“New genetics in traditional crops, new crops and different crop management strategies may form part of the farming mix.

“Today, you will hear about some of the strategies that scientists here in Narrabri and across the North West are using to better position our grains industries to manage this increased instability.

“Our partnership with Australia’s crop breeding companies is and will remain vital to delivering our research to the broader community and you will see this in action today through the various presentations and demonstrations.”

Moree Westpac closure: face to face service lost

Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall has condemned Westpac’s decision to close its Moree branch in February next year.

The announcement came just as agriculture, retail and hospitality businesses were recovering from the pandemic, Mr Marshall said.

“Westpac is kicking our hard-working small businesses and families in the guts, with the loss of face-to-face services and four local people’s jobs,” Mr Marshall said.

“Westpac fails to understand that customers still value and rely on conducting their banking in person, especially when an issue arises and contacting the call centre just does not cut it.

“They’re walking away from us and I’d urge those who can to walk away from them.”

Mr Marshall said Westpac was preying on the loyalty of country people, no doubt hoping its customers remain, despite this latest slap in the face.

“My position has always been clear when it comes to the big four banks maintaining a presence in regional communities; if you have paying local customers, you should offer local services.

“I urge Westpac to reconsider this decision, do the right thing and choose people over profits.”

FIVE STAR STAY: The Courier and Gunnedah Times tipsters enjoyed two nights luxury accomodation at the five star Radisson Blu hotel in the heart of Sydney, courtesy of Radisson Blu.
