For the Latinx/Hispanic community, mental health and mental illness are often stigmatized topics resulting in prolonged suffering in silence. This silence compounds the range of experiences that may lead to mental health conditions including immigration, acculturation, trauma, and generational conflicts.

Limiting usage of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs is a major public health concern in Puerto Rico. Drug poisoning deaths—driven in large part by the opioid crisis—are a top killer of Americans. 1983 Hispanic Heritage Month
In the late 1970s, the Minnesota Council on Latino Affairs was established to advise and inform the Minnesota Legislature and governor’s office on policy. The council was led by Jose Trejo and Elsa Vega Perez. In 1977, Conrado “Conrad” Vega became the first Latino state representative. In 1982 I was part of Governor Al Quie’s signing a proclamation for Minnesota Hispanic Heritage recognition.
