I am Jesús Rojas, I was born on December 10, 2008 in Monagas, Venezuela. In Venezuela I had a normal life, we never lacked anything and I was always under what was necessary and necessary, on
June 13 I emigrated to the United States, at the age of 14, leaving a life behind, family, friends, places, but in search of fulfilling a goal, a better future and playing professional soccer.
I emigrated together with my two younger brothers, Marcial Rojas (11) and Alfonso Rojas (9), also, accompanied by my dad and stepmother, the first month was hard, you come to something completely different, only with your family, that month I wanted to give back more than 1 time, every day I thought about if I had made a good decision, which was obvious, It is today, but at that time it was the most confusing thing in the world, and I have no doubt that just like me, for many that "first month" was the most difficult thing to emigrate.
I arrived just in June 2023, so we were on school vacation, I attended a summer school, in the same place where my next school would be, that day I was terrified of English, who would be there, he would make friends, if I was not going to adapt, I had many questions so as not to have the slightest notion of the answers to them, it was all unknown to me. There I met people who to this day are still close, as a family, without a doubt there began the process of adaptation, since you begin to form a new life, new circle, new routine, new friends, acquaintances, and above all, you begin to have a new family, in my personal opinion, in the USA, close friendships, They are considered family, or at least in my case, that I have a closed circle of friends and without a doubt we are a family, something that is not built from one day to the next, but people will always have a purpose in your
life, and you in theirs, you just don't have to be so closed to the positive entry of new people into your life.
Today I have been living here for more than a year and a half and I can say that it was the best decision I have made in my life, I have a life cast, I do what I like to do, I live as I like to live, and I am with whom I like to be, that's how I think life has to be, just the way YOU want it. There will always be hard moments, as in everything, the important thing is to always look for the PERSONAL solution, because things have to be done for oneself, to be good with ONE, not to please others, because at the end of the day the main family you have is yourself and no matter what happens that will always be like that, Moving forward when everything seems dark only makes you prove to yourself that you are there, for yourself, that you always get a solution to difficult moments, that everything always happens for a reason, no matter how hard it is, we will always be left with a positive lesson, and without a doubt, something better will always come

Solutions start with listening.
The other day, I met a Minneapolis fire inspections field operations manager who told me the city's fire department is understaffed
"I think it's because people don't want to serve their community the way they used to," said the man, who also served 22 years in the United States military with tours of duty in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria.
"People are not as interested in giving back to the community or serving their community," he added. "Fire service is a trade. It also takes courage."
"What is a solution?" I asked.
"It starts in the home," he said. "We need to shift our values and priorities."
The conversation took place at the Community Connections Conference on Saturday, Feb 8 The annual free event connects residents of Minneapolis, community groups, neighborhoods, and local government
This year featured over 250 booths from the City of Minneapolis and other community groups, workshops and community dialogues on important topics, performances from local artists, a free lunch, a scavenger hunt, and opportunities to connect with city leaders
The theme of the 2025 conference was “Participation is Power: Speak, Act, Grow.”
The Strong Mind Strong Body Foundation was one of those participants. We were there with youth from our Youth Community Journalism Institute and created a community newspaper with conference attendees.

That day I had to host a program about immigration, which at any time would be a normal topic, but today, we all know the difficult situation and current events that are being experienced regarding this topic, undoubtedly one of the most relevant and impactful global activities of the year so far, I had five guests, all of them directly or indirectly related to immigration, I knew it was going to be one of the most important episodes I have had, it was a current controversial topic, I arrived early, 40 minutes before, after 10 minutes my bosses arrived, we started talking again about the show and that we were going to do well as always, the work environment there is incredible, we trust in each other's skills and that confidence is always transmitted, and in pre-recording it is no exception, minutes later the guests for the podcast/episode began to arrive, and from one moment to another I was already sitting on the recording set with the guests, I started the episode as always, introducing myself and announcing the topic to be discussed, then Announcing the guests present, during the podcast many important aspects were touched upon about what is

This was one of the most necessary and fruitful episodes we've recorded, filled with positive energy and important dialogue. “ ”
experienced today with immigration in the United States, 1 hour of recording, 1 hour of valuable informative content and above all we all agreed on a “human” opinion about the subject, at the end, everyone was happy and satisfied with the episode made, and of course I was too, a totally necessary episode and subject, fruitful and positive, to finish I collected all the “logistics” of the recording set, without a doubt being able to work with all this is something I am grateful for, because it really is a very positive and summative environment, one of the best podcasts we have made.

IINFORMATIONOVERLOAD NFORMATIONOVERLOAD
Advice shared by Jennifer Walter

Sociologist Jennifer Walter shares observations on why we feel overwhelmed with so much news related to President Donald Trump's executive orders and actions In short, he warns us that the goal of political strategists is to make one feel overwhelmed.
1/ The avalanche of more than 70 executive orders in Trump's early days exemplifies Naomi Klein's "shock doctrine": using chaos and crisis to push for radical change while people are too disoriented to resist effectively. More than basic politics, this is a strategic exploitation of cognitive limits.
2/ Media theorist Marshal McLuhan warned that when humans face information overload, they become passive and disengage That's why Trump's executive orders issued in quick succession create a cognitive bottleneck, making it nearly impossible for citizens and the media to thoroughly scrutinize any individual policy
3/ Agenda theory explains this strategy: when multiple major policies compete simultaneously for attention, they fragment public discourse. Traditional media can't keep up, leading to superficial coverage

What to do now?
Set boundaries: choose two or three key topics that matter deeply to you and focus your attention there You can't follow everything, and that's intentional. The impact comes from a sustained approach, not a scattered consciousness.
Inform yourself from various sources and experts: find reliable analysts who do the hard work of synthesis. Look for those who explain patterns, not just events
Remember: feeling overwhelmed is the goal. When you recognize it, you regain some power. Take breaks. Processes. This is a marathon.
Practice calm: wait 48 hours before reacting to new policies The urgent clouds the important Early reports often lack context.
Build community: share the cognitive load. Different people may follow different topics Collective intelligence overcomes individual overload
Remember: they want you to be scattered. Your focus is resistance.

Historical Context of The Chrysalis
Since1898,PuertoRicohasundergonetransformationsthat haveshapeditsidentity,economy,andstandardofliving.

By Miguel Fiol & Joe Moses

The mid-20th century saw an economic shift under Operation Bootstrap, promoting industrialization through U.S. tax incentives, leading to the rise, from IRS Rule 936, of American pharmaceutical companies on the island. By the 1970s, Puerto Rico became a hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing, yet these industries often benefited multinational corporations more than local workers, contributing to economic dependency. During the 1980s AIDS crisis, pharmaceutical companies in Puerto Rico prioritized the sale of these drugs in wealthier U.S. markets rather than making them widely available to Puerto Ricans, exacerbating health disparities on the island.
Since the period of The Chrysalis, gentrification (Law 2022) has further strained Puerto Rico’s economy and social fabric, particularly in the wake of Hurricane Maria in 2017. Wealthy investors and mainland Americans have purchased properties, driving up housing costs and displacing 10-15 % of Puerto Ricans. Despite these hardships, Puerto Ricans continue to assert their cultural and ethnic identity, balancing resistance, adaptation, and calls for self-determination. The independence movement, though weakened by U.S. policies and economic realities, remains a key part of Puerto Rico’s historical narrative, shaping its ongoing struggle for sovereignty and social equity.

Most recently, Bad Bunny has drawn attention to social, political, and economic issues affecting Puerto Ricans. In 2019, he protested with other popular artists to demand the resignation of Governor Ricardo Rosselló after leaked chats revealed corruption and offensive remarks. In his 2022 music video for El Apagón, he criticized the displacement of Puerto Ricans by wealthy investors and U.S. expatriates who exploit tax incentives In a more recent video “Debi haber tomado mas fotos” he has hit the same issues with renewed force and in the face of President Trump's degrading statements.
OLD SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO - JULY 17, 2019 - Getty Images
Bad Bunny - 2019
In lyrics and interviews, he has called out U.S. policies that maintain Puerto Rico’s economic dependency and criticized industries that exploit the island’s labor and resources while providing little long-term benefit to Puerto Ricans. He has publicly supported LGBTQ+ rights in a conservative Latin music industry, paying tribute on late-night TV to Alexa Negrón Luciano, a transgender woman murdered in Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico’s nationhood, like Native Americans, Hawaiian, and many other remaining colonies, is being brutally threatened by colonialism, outside controls by capitalism, gentrification with loss of our only resources our ancestors' land and the loss of its little autonomy by an imperial US imposed Junta The independence movement had a big gain in the recent vote; the US president’s insults are chastised, the people on the island and diaspora are waking up and have found their power in their streets and popular voices articulate it in music and sports. The flag is seen everywhere and there is a feeling that finally, Boricuas have woken up: “Boricua despierta, defiende lo tuyo.”
At the time of the play (1990) these issues flare up due to the AIDS epidemic exposing the wounds: denial by American companies of life-saving drugs as an affront to Puerto Ricans who gave their lives in Vietnam and other Wars without power to vote in Congress.
A family, a microcosm of this national crisis, struggles with these issues, and their inner conflicts are a reflection of the outside world crumbling even though grandparents return to intervene. The national tragedy of HIV infection hits home when Jose, Raul's best friend, falls ill without access to adequate medical care. Jose’s condition reinforces the island’s dependency on outside interests and the need for the rise of a new Nationalism.
The family survives its multiple conflicts as a unit or chrysalis by embracing what truly holds them together national pride, the flag, the Patria (Francisco’s true identity), and their common ancestors. The Chrysalis promises the rebirth of the nation after the internal construction of nationhood The play also represents the will of the Puerto Ricans to survive and the determination that above all, nationhood is the force that binds them most.

First of all I would like to say it is a pleasure to be here with you all on this journey. It’s pleasant that we awakened in our right minds, with so many budget cuts. That is at least for now many of us who still have roofs over our heads, while so many others do not.
The topic I chose for today’s session is “What Makes You Tick” and some might be wondering what that might mean. I will share with you why I chose to go that way I learned a long time ago as a mother of five children we create our own reasons for living this life and we live around them
Often I told myself it was OK that my man did not act as I had planned I believed sometimes he just didn’t understand his actions were getting out of hand But what made him tick did not always stay on the same playing field as I myself had landed upon Oftentimes we want to be in control of what goes on in our relationships, but when things do not go our way we become ruffled Then we would wonder why they started acting strange But step back for a moment and grab hold of a loose tongue for it stirred up the wrath we were caught up within

But a quiet mouth gives us rule over the battle, and this I have learned through many years of experience Most of my life I was always the one in control because I was raising four young men and a daughter I used to tell them I put my pants on the same way as they (the boys did) but mine were bigger because I was mom, and I even told them they would never outgrow me And still to this day, they are very respectful to all they come in contact with That is when the world allows them to be that way
I have learned that our children have established a pattern for their beliefs, their grief’s, and their pains by the age of five years old. If by this time they are embracing fear instead of facing up to it or owning it, this way of life will be what makes them tick.

Life is as amazing as every one of you are!

LA LUZ QUE NINGUNA OSCURIDAD PUEDE EXTINGUIR
N C O N T

THE LIGHT THAT NO DARKNESS CAN EXTINGUISH
To those feeling afraid, unseen, or powerless: You are not alone. Your struggle matters.
In times when fear seems to rule, it's easy to believe that evil is unstoppable. But what if evil is not a monster to defeat, but simply the absence of the courage to care? What if the answer lies not in fighting darkness, but in becoming the light?
When families face separation and communities live in fear, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. Many are experiencing painful realities - parents separated from children, people sent to unfamiliar countries, and constant anxiety of uncertainty. These are real lives, real families, real stories.
Evil Is Not a Force - It’s a Void
Evil isn't a cosmic force; it's the absence of empathy. It thrives when we see others as obstacles, value comfort over compassion, and let fear silence courage. Fighting emptiness with negativity only deepens the void.
Like darkness, evil vanishes in light - kindness, understanding, and shared humanity. This light is Love - not as a feeling, but as action. Shown through patience, kindness, generosity, and facing suffering, Love brings strength to protect, care, and persevere.
When deportations tear families apart, leaders praise dictators, or policies strip dignity, we see this void. These actions are fear disguised as power—fear of losing control, change, and seeing the beauty in everyone.
Understanding this means change is possible. As darkness is the absence of light, challenges stem from lack of empathy, understanding, and connection. Our actions, like turning on a lamp, can transform reality.
The Shadows We Face
The numbers are staggering:
Over 1 million immigrants have lost protections under Temporary Protected Status
Deportations have reached a 10-year high, costing $88 billion annually in economic damage and immeasurable human suffering.
Leaders threaten retribution, undermine democracy, and abandon global allies
These numbers represent parents separated from children, neighbors living in shadows, and communities shattered by fear. This isn't inevitable; it's the result of choices - to dehumanize, prioritize politics over people, and let fear eclipse shared humanity.
How Light Wins
Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can. Every time we choose love over fear, we chip away at the void.
Reclaim Your Power
You are not powerless. Even small acts of love are revolutionary: Protect one another: Provide shelter, legal aid, or childcare for those at risk. Amplify voices: Share stories of resilience to remind the world of our shared humanity. Use your skills: Teachers, lawyers, artists, healthcare - your talents are tools for justice. Act locally: Support community businesses, vote in local elections, attend town halls. Create sanctuary: Churches, schools, and neighborhoods can become spaces of safety and belonging.
Find Your Center
This light, the needed transformative force, is the power of everyday acts of kindness:
Listen with patience: Take time to truly hear others' stories. Show kindness: Reach out to offer support. Embrace humility: None of us have all the answers. Hold onto hope: Keep moving forward even when change seems far away. Love actively: Stand with one another even when it’s hard.
Love as a Blueprint
Love is not passive. It is active:
Organize: Partner with groups like United We Dream or Alight. Document injustices: Safely record rights violations to hold systems accountable. Practice radical kindness: Check on a neighbor, mentor a child, defend someone targeted. When leaders threaten authoritarianism, we respond with democracy. When others build walls, we build bridges.
You Are the Light
This is not ignoring the darkness. Even the smallest spark can pierce it. Every time you:
Choose courage over comfort
See a person instead of a “problem” Stand with those who are targeted …you add to the light.
The road is long, but you do not walk it alone. Across kitchens, courtrooms, and protests, others are choosing love too. Together, we create a force no policy can dismantle and no fear can extinguish
These steps are not about grand gestures, but about the small, consistent choices we make every day. When we choose love over fear, we create ripples that transform our communities and world.
In the end, love wins - not because it is naive, because it is relentless.
Be relentless.

DOTS & BOXES

DOTS & BOXES
