What happened to the big changes to California elections?

The campaign text messages have stopped, and your recycling bin is finally empty of mailers. But while it’s not election season anymore, California lawmakers are still tinkering with how voting happens.

THE number of election-related bills introduced this session — close to 50 — is average, election officials said. But that number has been whittled down since January, and this week’s policy committee deadline may narrow the active proposals more. Some bigger measures failed early on — including a constitutional amendment

that would have changed the state superintendent of public instruction from an elected position to one appointed by the governor.

Sen. Scott Wiener, a San Francisco Democrat, dropped his effort to provide more detail to voters on who is fund-

ing ballot measures after the bill was heavily amended in committees. The amendments “reduced the impact to the point that it was no longer worth passing,” said Erik Mebust, spokesperson for Wiener’s office.

BOEING ANNOUNCES INVESTMENT IN FLY COMPTON

On July 10, Boeing announced a $500,000 investment package to fund pilot training scholarships and help grow and diversify the talent pipeline. Boeing also announced a separate $450,000 investment in Fly Compton, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit working to introduce minority youth to opportunities within aerospace. The company’s investment will help increase the number of flight training classes offered to underserved students in LA’s Compton community and introduce additional programming focused on drones, aircraft mechanics and aircraft engineering into the nonprofit’s training curriculum.

Employment figures show that the percentage of female pilots in the U.S. is less than 5%. The percentage of black pilots is less than 2%. Black female pilots are estimated to be less than 1%.

Boeing announced it is committed to helping grow these figures to more equitable levels through the support of organizations that provide opportunities to those who might not otherwise have a chance to succeed in aviation careers.

mand for newly qualified aviation personnel remains strong. Boeing projects that 602,000 new pilots will be needed to fly and maintain the global commercial fleet over the next 20 years.

At Fly Compton, we know that lack of exposure, access to resources and the high cost of flight training prevents underrepresented populations from exploring careers in aviation. On Saturday, July 29, Boeing employees will be at Fly Compton teaching local students flight fundamentals and engineering principles through STEM competitions. There will be two sessions. The first session will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The second session is scheduled to be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Slight uptick in countywide Covid-19 cases

The totals of the number of Covid-19 cases in Compton has reached 40, 438, according to the latest report released by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The demographic groups hit the hardest by the deadly infectious disease countywide are women (1,835,749), Latino/ Hispanic (1,518,071), and those between the ages of 30-49 (1,139,032), according to the latest study done by the county.

With small increases in the number of reported COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles County, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) reminds residents to consider taking common-sense precautions, especially for people at highest risk for severe illness from COVID-19.

Public Health data shows increases in reported COVID-19 cases, virus concentrations in wastewater and the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests, possibly the result of high levels of exposure during Fourth of July festivities, summer travel, and the unusually high temperatures that are keeping people indoors more often.

For the past three summers, Los Angeles County has experienced a summer COVID-19 surge. Beginning in mid-July 2021, cases and hospitalizations increased relatively sharply. In contrast, in 2022, cases and hospitalizations had already begun to rise by May 1, however the increase was more gradual.

This week, Public Health reports 2,034 new COVID-19 cases, a 32 percent increase from the 1,544 cases reported last week. While helpful to indicate larger trends, cases are an undercount of the true number of infections due to the large number of at-home COVID test results that are not reported to Public Health.

Wastewater concentrations of SARS CoV-2, the virus that results in a COVID-19 infection, are at 10 percent of the most recent winter peak for the week ending July 8, a slight increase from the 8 percent that was recorded for each of the previous three weeks. The test positivity rate, which does not include home tests, increased to 7.5 percent as of July 15, up from 5.1 percent one month earlier.

Former Compton official to lead board of South Bay Cities Council of Governments

Cedric Hicks, who once worked for the City of Compton as an assistant manager, is charting upward in his professional political growth climb. Hicks, a former officer for the now disbanded Compton Police Department, has been selected by the South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG), a government organization dedicated to improving the quality of life and productivity in the South Bay subregion of Los Angeles County, to lead its board as the 202324 chair.

THE Carson City Council member will lead a board that is comprised of elected delegates from 16 South Bay cities, the Harbor City/San Pedro/ Wilmington communities of the city of Los Angeles and District 2 and 4 of Los Angeles County, collaborates on issues of mutual interest such as improving transportation, solving homelessness, increasing broadband access in underserved communities and saving energy and water.

Among Hicks’ top goals is bringing more innovative, energy-efficient technology to the South Bay. He takes the helm as the SBCCOG celebrates the 20th anniversary of its South Bay Environmental Services Center (SBESC) program. The SBESC provides information, solutions and resources to South Bay businesses, residents and

governments on energy efficiency, water conservation and waste reduction.

The SBCCOG is also preparing to launch its South Bay Local Travel Network (LTN) by early fall. The LTN, which features a rolling turtle logo, will support the growing personal use of “micro mobility” through a 243-mile route of slow-speed streets. Micro mobility is a mode of travel defined by the use of zero-emission, slow-speed vehicles. Such devices include neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs), e-bikes, pedal bikes and e-scooters.

“It’s a very exciting time to help lead this organization as we bring to fruition an idea that will change how we think about local travel in the South Bay,” Hicks said. “The SBCCOG offers a unique opportunity to collaborate as a region on issues that impact all of us. I am excited about working closely with my colleagues in the South Bay. There is much to do, and work begins on day one.”

Hicks joined the SBCCOG board as a member in 2017. He was appointed to the Carson City Council on April 19, 2016, and reelected for a four-year term in November 2016 and

a Black male, 18-21 years of age, had been transported to a local hospital for apparent gunshot wounds to the upper torso. The victim was subsequently pronounced deceased.

There were two additional gunshot victims (a Hispanic male juvenile and Black male/18) who were also trans-

ported to local hospitals and are currently listed in stable condition.

Investigators learned there was a party going on at the business location when a fight ensued between two males and gunshots were heard.

Through its work managing voter-approved Measure R and Measure M Subregional Program Funds, the SBCCOG has contributed more than $1billion toward transportation improvements in the South Bay. This includes $27 million for the new Mary K. Giordano Torrance Transit Center.

Meet the Black woman whose nonprofit gives HBCU students free dorm makeovers

TRANSFORMING LIVES, ONE DORM ROOM AT A TIME: MOVE-IN DAY MAFIA PREPARES FOR COLLEGE MOVE-IN SEASON AT HBCUS

Hollywood veteran & Howard University grad, TeeJ Mercer, is the founder and creator of Move-In Day Mafia (MIDM), a non-profit organization of volunteers that provide dorm room makeovers and everything underserved HBCU freshmen need to kick off their college journey at Prairie View A&M, Paul Quinn College, & Fisk University College move-in day season is fast approaching. Attending college is expensive and for the freshmen who have aged out of foster care, getting from the first year to graduation can seem like an impossible goal.

FOUNDED in 2022, Move-In Day Mafia (MIDM) is an initiative of Project Dreamlight 501(c)3. Ultimately, it’s a “mob” of volunteers who descend upon HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) to provide dorm room makeovers and ongoing assistance primarily for freshmen who have aged out of

foster care, are homeless or need more financial support.

It’s estimated that while 70% of kids in foster care dream of college, only 3% realize their dream to go, and only 1% graduate. A number of issues affect their success such as housing insecurity and minimal family contribution, creating a huge financial burden.

Determined to do something about the dismal graduation rate, Award-winning TV Editor & Producer, TeeJ Mercer, the “Godfather” of MIDM, questions, “How can students focus, create and thrive when they are worried about their basic human needs? I just want them to go to school and not have to work two or three jobs to take care of themselves. The

only thing they should be concerned about is studying hard, partying, making memories, and ultimately graduating.”

With the help of donors and their corporate partners Trade & Travel, NJ Luke Publishing, and Nikki Klugh Design Group, MIDM moved in 13 freshmen to Paul Quinn College in Dallas for its inaugural year in 2022. For the upcoming 2023-2024 school year, the “family” has tripled last year’s effort with 39 freshmen, supporting three schools: Paul Quinn College (Dallas, TX), Prairie View A&M University (Near Houston, TX), and Fisk University (Nashville, TN).

For some of the scholars, the MIDM-designed room will be the first time they have a voice

in choosing what goes into their personal space. With this in mind, celebrity interior designer Nikki Klugh designs each dorm room with the goal of incorporating their favorite things. “At our firm, we create ideal spaces that our clients fall madly in love with. It doesn’t matter if the space is small and on a slim budget or thousands of square feet with a very healthy budget, our team cares about the inhabitants and how that space will affect their total health and well-being,” says Klugh. “So when TeeJ told me the mission of the Mafia, I knew that we had to do our part to create the same feeling for this incredibly deserving group of students.”

On move-in day, scholars receive a complete dorm room

design, along with a TV, refrigerator and microwave (if not provided by the school) artwork, school supplies, hygiene items, cleaning products, storage solutions, and much more.

The 2023 applications are rolling in. When asked why they need MIDM, a homeless applicant who will attend Fisk University wrote, “I’ve been on my own since 15 years old. I would love help because I feel overwhelmed just doing everything by myself,” while a Prairie View A&M freshman answered, “I currently am homeless bouncing from house to house until I move on to campus and I want a space that feels like it’s mine.”

During the school year, MIDM provides care packages including more hygiene and cleaning products. “We want to ensure they stay focused on just being a student without having to worry about detergent, deodorant, and toothpaste,” says Mercer.

And how did MIDM come to be? The age-old game of Bingo! Yes, you read that right… BINGO!

Back in 2020, while the pandemic was devastating the world, as a graduate of Howard University, the same HBCU of Vice President Kamala Harris, Mercer wanted to do something to help celebrate the HBCU

CUSD recognizes district administrators

Compton Unified School District recently recognized the top 2023 certificated administrators, including principals, assistant principals, and counselor. In an intimate afternoon reception at Caldwell Elementary School, Board of Trustees President Charles Davis thanked all the staff who serve the district:

“ ON behalf of the board, we appreciate all that you do. You all have contributed so much to our school district’s success,” Davis said.

As a Compton High School graduate, Board of Trustees member Satra Zurita also thanked the crowd of administrators: “I know how

important what you do on a daily basis is to the success of our children in this community. Our students wouldn’t have gotten to where they are today without all of you. Being a parent myself, I can say on behalf

of parents in this community, thank you for what you do for our children.”

Washington Elementary represents CUSD at Model Schools Conference

Washington Elementary staff members recently attended the 31st Annual Model Schools Conference in Orlando, Florida and shared key strategies and procedures for increasing student achievement and building and sustaining a positive school culture among staff, students, and families.

Washington was one of 11 elementary Model Schools from across the United States that shared best practices at the Model Schools Conference. The event provided the inspiration for thousands of passionate teachers and leaders and challenged them to share replicable and creative strategies that can produce results in any school.

In their presentation at the conference, Washington Principal Alicia Weyeneth and Blended Learning Specialist Misty Williamson discussed how systems around instructional design, data analytics, intervention, staff/parent communication, clear expectations, and strong relationships all contributed to the turnaround of this school.

Washington Elementary was recently named a 2023 Model School by the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE) for its

focus on relationships and rigorous and relevant academics to impact students.

In just one year, Washington Elementary went from being the lowest-performing elementary school in the district to being recognized for its best practices, academic gains, and even becoming a California Exem-

plary Arts Education School. Simple and strategic implementations coupled with accountability measures led to a shift in both the culture and the narrative of the Title I school.

The International Center for Leadership in Education, established in 1991, is one of the most influential education consulting companies

in America. It is best known for identifying and disseminating successful practices to assist all students in achieving higher standards. The leadership team and consultants at ICLE have assisted numerous state education agencies and hundreds of schools and districts in their improvement initiatives.

Empowering inner-city youth through digital innovation in our education systems

In today’s rapidly changing digital landscape, it is crucial that we provide our youth the tools and resources needed to navigate new emerging technologies. All children, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds, deserve to discover the power of innovation and the endless possibilities that come with it.

THAT is why, we have embarked on a mission to develop a groundbreaking Web 2.5 application aimed at addressing critical issues facing students and teachers, such as mental health; conflict resolution, quality curriculum pertaining to emerging technologies, financial literacy and chronic absenteeism in schools.

The journey to creating this app, LearnVille began with recognizing the immense capability of blockchain technology to disrupt EVERY industry, and in this case education. I was immediately inspired by the desire to bridge the gap between inner city education and cutting-edge innovation. There are many obstacles that schools face that could possibly be tackled with the help of technology, such as equitable access to quality curriculums and tools to target their communities hardships that impact their person daily.

Architecting this App has taken years of research and development in various aspects of education and the delivery of information to our youth. Introducing our youth to immersive technologies requires us to spend extra time ensuring their comprehension and ability to apply to life scenarios, today.

Through years of serving our community youth, my un-

derlying mission has been to create an impact that will last longer than my life.

Students are encouraged to actively engage in their school through a blockchain powered incentivisation program. Participating in Courses and Monthly Challenges within the app empower students to Learn, to Earn digital gift cards and Various Special Experiences that they may not otherwise have access to.

Additional points are earned through checking in to school, and individual classes via the App, daily. This innovative approach not only cultivates a sense of ownership and responsibility among the youth, but incentivizes attendance as a whole.

The app successfully completed its beta testing phase in several schools in Los Angeles County. The results were astounding, highlighting in-

the possibilities it holds for their future. Through this initiative, we are onboarding the next generation of builders, creators, and innovators.

In building out LearnVille, I have targeted 6 of the strongest PAIN points in public education: Access to Technology & STEM programming, Equitable Curriculums; Conflict Resolution; Mental Health and Bullying; Attendance and Teacher Retention through digital administrative support. Attendance is just one challenge that schools are facing that can be improved with the help of technology, while hugely impactful for the school as a whole to receive the necessary funding to better serve the students and teachers.

By exposing young minds to the concepts of innovative technologies at an early age, students are able to solve common issues in the education system, and are being empowered to navigate the digital world responsibly. They are also more inclined to be confident in utilizing and building new technologies in their upper education. In a study done by BanklessTimes, 40% of parents wanted to see classes or some form of education about blockchain technology. By fostering an understanding of this type of innovation, we are equipping our youth with the critical thinking skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the digital age.

Media predicts USC to win 2023 Pac-12 Football Championship

USC has been chosen as the favorite to win the 2023 Pac-12 Conference Championship, presented by 76®, in a vote of 36 media members who cover the league. The Trojans received 25 of the 36 first-place votes to earn the preseason selection.

WASHINGTON, which received four first-place votes, finished second to edge two-time defending champion Utah, which actually received more firstplace votes (six) than the Huskies. Oregon, which finished fourth in the poll, was the only other school to receive a firstplace vote.

This will be the second season that the championship game will be played between the two teams with the highest conference winning percentage. This change came about following the NCAA Division I Council decision in May 2022 to deregulate the rule that had limited an individual conference’s autonomy to de-

termine their football championship game participants.

It was based on a motion brought by the Pac-12 and unanimously supported by all FBS conferences. The media has correctly selected the conference champion in 33 of 62 previous preseason polls, including six times in the 12year FCG era. The 2023 Pac-12 Football Media Day was held

in Las Vegas on Friday, July 21. Here are the results of the preseason media poll (points 12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 with first-place votes in parentheses):

Austin Ekeler Foundation gives L.B. Poly a new weight room

July 14 was a big day for Long Beach Polytechnic High School. That because Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler and some of his NFL pals paid a visit to the historic Long Beach school to unveil a new state-of-the-art weight-lifting gym provided by the Austin Ekeler Foundation.

Donations for the new facility also came from Jurrell Casey’s The Casey Fund, JuJu Smith-Schuster’s The JuJu Foundation, the Los Angeles Chargers, Sonos, and Perform Better. The event called for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication that brought out former Long Beach Poly athletic standouts as well as current student-athletes.

The new gym includes state-of-the-art equipment, sound systems and flooring,

and is estimated to cost several hundred thousand dollars.

“Having access to the right resources is key to success, both on and off the field,” says

Ekeler. “With support from Long Beach Poly alums Jurrell Casey and JuJu-Smith Schuster and other organizations in our community, we’re excited

for students and student-athletes to have better facilities to work on being their best selves through wellness, nutrition and fitness.”

Casey and Schuster-Smith, both Long Beach Poly alums, attended the event along with Ekeler.

The Austin Ekeler Foundation was established during the 2020 NFL season based on Ekeler’s desire to give back to his community and help others succeed in their lives by providing reusable resources.

The Long Beach Poly weight room project follows the Foundation’s 2021 unveiling of a new gym facility at Santa Barbara High School. Other projects the foundation has spearheaded include donating football equipment to youth football programs, providing

washers, dryers, and laundry detergent to five schools in Los Angeles, partnering with Adidas to provide essential items to women and children in need, and purchasing Amazon wish lists for several Southern California elementary school teachers.

Long Beach Poly has been a part of the Long Beach community since 1895 as the city and school district’s flagship school. The current weight room building was constructed in the 1930s and has remained unchanged since the 1990s.

Following the renovation, the weight room will serve 30 sports, 70 teams, and 1,700 student athletes, in addition to all 9th and 10th grade physical education classes and upper classmen taking strength and conditioning courses as electives.

“When CBS News With Norah O’Donnell did a story on ‘#TeeJHBCUBingo,’ I learned that one of my HBCU babies, as I call them, was a student that had spent time in foster care and her social worker drove her to her HBCU, pulled up to the curb, let her unload what little stuff she had and just left her. That broke me,” she adds.

Mercer activated her life motto of “use what’s in your hands,” and prayed for God to show her how to ensure no HBCU student ever goes through this transition alone.

There has been little action yet on another constitutional amendment, inspired by the 2019 failed recall of Gov. Gavin Newsom, to limit a recall ballot for statewide officials to only asking voters “yes” or “no” on removing the official. Under the proposal, a recalled governor would be replaced by the lieutenant governor and others would be replaced in a special election.

And a bill that would speed up vote counting by changing how mail ballots are processed is in limbo, having passed the Assembly but been sent to the Senate appropriations “suspense file.”

That issue has been a key focus for Kim Alexander, president of the nonpartisan California Voter Foundation, who says the state’s notoriously slow results are not just embarrassing but bad for representation and voter confidence.

“The longer that it takes to determine a winner in a contest, the less time that winner has to prepare an agenda for their stint in public office,” she told CalMatters. “The longer that it takes to get the results out to the public, the more suspicious people become.”

For the week ending July 18, Public Health opened 11 outbreak investigations, similar to the 12 outbreak investigations opened the week before. By comparison, one month ago, for the week ending June 20, four new outbreaks were opened.

While COVID-19 transmission patterns continue to evolve, it is important that county residents take simple precautions to reduce transmission. This includes testing if exposed to COVID-19 or if experiencing symptoms of a respiratory illness, including sore throat, cough or fever. Information about testing, including where to get free tests, is available at ph.lacounty.gov/COVIDtests.

If a person tests positive for COVID-19, they must isolate for at least five full days to prevent inadvertently transmitting the virus to others. Isolation may end during days 6-10 if a person goes more than 24 hours without a fever, without the use of fever reducing medications, and their

But there are still some proposals that could impact voting in 2024. Here are some of the key bills:

Making sense of the ballot

Ballot language can be confusing. Look no further than Proposition 8, which asked voters to ban gay marriage. Voting “no” meant voting “yes” on gay marriage, while voting “yes” meant gay marriage would be disallowed.

The 2008 measure was approved by 52% of voters, then superseded by the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2012 ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. But it’s not the only example: Propositions 6 and 10 on the 2018 ballot — a repeal on the state gas tax, and a rent control measure, respectively — drew similar confusion.

Assembly Bill 421, authored by Culver City Democrat Isaac Bryan, would simplify language on the ballot to make more clear what voters are deciding. When

he introduced the bill, Bryan said its aim was to curb abuse of the ballot measure process — increasingly being used by wealthy corporations to overturn laws.

The 2024 ballot already includes two such measures: one by the oil and gas industry to overturn a ban on new oil and gas wells within 3,200 feet of homes, schools, hospitals and other “sensitive” facilities; another by the fast food industry to overturn the law creating a state council to set wages and other workplace standards.

But the current version of the bill is vastly different than what was first introduced.

Originally, the bill sought to curb disinformation by requiring signature gatherers to disclose whether they are paid or volunteers; mandating training and registration with the Secretary of State’s office; and instituting a three-year ban if someone violates the law.

In its latest form, the bill focuses on one primary fix: clarifying ballot language for referendums to either say “keep the law” or “overturn the law.” It’s also now an urgency bill, so if it becomes law, it can take effect for new measures added to the 2024 ballot.

“While it is too early to say anything definitively, the best course is to take advantage of the tools and knowledge we have gained to minimize the spread, especially for those who are most vulnerable. I am happy to see that our hospitalizations and deaths remain relatively low, and my hope is that with the protection of vaccines, the use of therapeutics, and our acquired immunity, that even if transmission does rise, we will not see the same increases in hospitalizations and deaths that we have in the past,” Ferrer added.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has replaced COVID-19 Community Levels with Hospital Admission Levels, which can help individuals and communities decide which prevention actions they can take based on the most recent information. Los Angeles County is in the Low Hospital Admission Level with 2.6 weekly COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people, reported on July 17 for the seven-day period ending July 8.

Bryan’s office did not make him available for comment on the amendments.

SEIU California, part of the Empower California Voters coalition backing this effort, says while it plans to continue fighting for further reforms to signature gathering, the bill still “responds urgently to pain points reported by voters: confusing ballot language that is easily exploited by corporations spending their vast wealth to veto policies they don’t like,” Tia Orr, the union’s executive director, said in a statement to CalMatters.

“Under AB 421, voters’ ballots will match their intent,” she wrote. “We know that the best way to do this is a clear statement of what a voter is choosing: to keep or overturn the law.”

Clearing up the language has strong bipartisan support among voters, according to a poll published in June by UC Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies: 81% of registered voters said they supported clarifying whether a referendum’s intent is to uphold or overturn a law.

Poll respondents also supported other aspects of AB 421 that have now been gutted: requiring a portion of signatures for a referendum to be gathered

by volunteers, a requirement that the top three funders of a referendum be disclosed on the signature pages and requiring paid signature gatherers to sign a statement saying they are giving voters accurate information.

Who draws your districts Redistricting is the oncea-decade process of redrawing election districts after each Census to make sure each has the same number of people. But without guardrails in place, those who draw the maps can use the process to preserve their own power.

For legislative and congressional maps in 2010 and 2020, California adopted an independent commission to take the power out of the hands of elected officials. The idea has trickled down to some counties and cities, but because state law doesn’t require local independent commissions, local redistricting has varied widely, leading to some allegations of gerrymandered maps.

That’s why, this year, we’re seeing more bills to require independent redistricting — though some may overlap. All five bills passed through policy committees before this week’s deadline to stay alive for the session.

‘They Cloned Tyrone’ hits all the right buttons

- In the Netflix film

“They Cloned Tyrone,” a drug dealer, a pimp and a sex worker are asked to save the day. It’s good for humanity that they do. Even better news is seeing actor Jamie Foxx on the screen doing what he always does, and that is producing quick-witted lines that stir up hysteria and bring that flair to the project that only he knows how to do.

WATCHING

Foxx stir around with his irresistible charm and marvelous acting is a reminder to all of us what kind of talent he is and what he means to the entertainment industry. Like he does in most of his films, the Academy Award winner (Ray), Foxx dives into his role as Slick Charles, who reluctantly gets pulled into rescuing humanity with the likes Fontaine (John Boyega) and Yo-Yo (Teyonah Parris).

Billed as a comedy, sci-fi thriller, “They Cloned Tyrone,” takes a little from different genres of filmmaking to work. There is a bit of “Get Out,” some elements of “Three the Hard Way (Jim Brown, Jim Kelly, and Fred Williamson),” and some pieces borrowed from the original “Shaft” and “Foxy Brown” in “They Cloned Tyrone.”

First, “They Cloned Tyrone” is a throwback to the Blaxploitation film days with all the cool Afros, leather pants and wide cut at the ankle’s pants. While Foxx’s character Slick Charles brings the charm and funny one-liners, Boyega as Fontaine, goes deep into his role as a no-nonsense hardened drug dealer who plays the lottery daily and does not fail to stop by the liquor store to get his 40 ounce of beer drink on.

Yo-Yo (Parris) seems at first to be an over-the-top whiner who has become dissatisfied working for Slick Charles. What brings the trio of Fontaine, Slick Charles and Yo-Yo together is a chain of events that take place at the beginning of the film where the movie goes in and out that flickers with Fontaine getting snuffed out by a fellow drug dealer after he leaves the motel room of Slick Charles. This is where things get tricky.

One moment we see Fontaine getting gunned down by his rivals and the next moment he is waking up from dreaming that the fatal consequence to his mortality was just that: a

dream. Fontaine’s dream gets shaken up when he pays Slick Charles a visit. Slick Charles (Foxx) freaks out that a man who he had seen get shot multiple times is now standing in front of him asking for money from his drug sales.

To bring more clarity to this situation, Slick Charles chases down Yo-Yo to convince Fontaine that he had indeed been shot. The intrigue on the thought that Slick Charles and Yo-Yo confer that he had been shot, perplexes Fontaine. The threesome then head over to get lunch from a popular fried chicken joint.

As the three would-be heroes discuss the reality of Fon-

taine’s existence, they can’t help but notice that all patrons in the restaurants are Black and they are all laughing hysterically. So, instead of gobbling the chicken themselves, Fontaine, Slick Charles and Yo-Yo suddenly go inquisitive and wonder what’s happening around them.

Pretty soon, the three inexperienced sleuths embark on a journey where they eventually discover that The Man and The System are out to destroy the Black community using cloning as their weapon of choice to bring about this result. Much like what happens in real life, conspiracy theories run deep in “They Cloned Tyrone.” This is where the connection between this film and “Three the Hard Way” match up in similar ways.

In “Three the Hard Way (1974),” three friends (Brown, Kelly, and Williamson) join forces to take down a white supremacist group that strategically plans to wipe out the Black race by infecting the U.S. water supply. Like “Three the Hard Way,” “They Cloned Ty-

rone” is relying on triplets to be the heroes. The change up in “They Cloned Tyrone” is that they added a female lead to costar with Foxx and Boyega.

Parris is dynamic as the sexy starlet Yo-Yo who knows a thing or two about kicking butt. Parris more than holds her own alongside Foxx and the ultra-talented Boyega, sending many reminders of the legendary Pam Grier in her role. Grier was and is the queen of Blaxploitation films, rolling out hits such as “Coffy,” “Sheba, Baby,” and “Scream Blacula Scream.”

If some people think that scenarios played out in films like “Three the Hard Way” and “They Cloned Tyrone” are far-reaching, then they should check out their history books and read about the now infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study (The Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male). “They Cloned Tyrone” is an excellent movie and for Black Americans, brings another reality check about the horrors that have been inflicted upon us as a collective body of people.
