The year that was and now the future I would like to take the opportunity on behalf of your committee to express our thanks to all our members for your growing support during a very busy year. All the volunteering and team work really helps. It is not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing with committee efforts, but one of participating in the operations and future of the club.

President’s Christmas Message

We had an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) in April which gave a resounding endorsement to fund the club’s return to normal and future development. There was plenty going on in 2023, and still plenty to be done.

We have not made an operating profit for at least 14 years.

We are not there yet by a long shot, but I am happy to report we seem to have shaken off the cobwebs of Covid, got our club ship-shape and ready for whatever challenges the New Year offers.

We have funded deficits from deposits held and a land sale.

We have a drive next year to get all members a level of welfare that will come as close as we can to that we offer our service members. We now have a 17-seater bus aboard which will be a start to get our members, whether ex-service or associates, to and from the club safely and available for outings. The crowds are back on most nights, with our internal clubs like indoor bowls, darts, pool and snooker enjoying good growth. We get much appreciated support from Women’s Section, Over 60s, KEV and the Navy veterans and Rotary. Activities like line dancing and bingo continue to attract good crowds while the weekly Member’s Draw and raffles remain one of our strongest activities. The world has changed forever and we must change with it if we are to survive and flourish as a community hub for all ages. We have a bit of money in the bank up our sleeve but that will disappear soon enough if we don’t get the planning right. Make no mistake, we are a charity but there is a need to run our club like a business to support our welfare targets and a business must make a profit to survive. Page 3

Currently we are in control and can decide our future. The driving task for next year has to be to cement in place a future for our club that is sustainable and yet offers all the benefits we currently enjoy. The “Future Options” report deserves your serious consideration if only to help create further choices for members to consider when we have an Extraordinary General meeting in the New Year to get plans underway. Whatever we decide as members to be our path forward, it will likely take a couple of years to implement the plan. We will need time to get things sorted before we settle in to what will hopefully be a club future that will outlast us all. We could offer nothing more valuable than to leave for the future families of the district a secure venue driven by the values of remembrance to those who fought so hard to defend our democracy. We are so lucky. Best wishes for the festive season
