September has drawn to a close and we are now heading into the final three months of the year. This is a busy time for many of us with end of year and Christmas functions, as well as holiday planning. Nevertheless, there is plenty to do before then and lots of activities going on at the RSA.
The first Executive Committee meeting since the AGM has now been held and I’m pleased to report that we have an enthusiastic and excited group of people looking to guide the RSA over the coming year.
First up are some administrative tasks and the need to re-register under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. This will require changes to the rules to meet criteria under the new Act and potentially to align with changes being discussed at the RNZ RSA.
We are likely to hold several special meetings throughout the coming year to prepare for and enact these changes. I would like to see as many members as possible attending these meetings to make the process run smoothly.
The Executive Committee will embark on regular meetings about the future of the Hibiscus Coast Community RSA, discussing options, getting quotes, and implementing changes.
I will endeavour to provide regular feedback to you all throughout this process. Some of the changes will require approval of the membership, which we will try to combine with the rule changes, to cut down on the number of meetings.
In the meantime, if you would like the Executive Committee to consider any specific ideas you have in mind, please do not hesitate to submit these through the following online form: https:// www.hbcrsa.org.nz/future-suggestion-proposal/ Your input and dedication to the RSA is greatly
appreciated.
The next significant commemoration for the RSA is Armistice Day, 11 November. This year it falls on a Monday and the Executive Committee have agreed to hold the ceremony on Remembrance Sunday (10 November), to cater for the groups and people in our community.
I have been contacted by both No. 5 Squadron, Air Training Corps, and the Hibiscus Coast and Bays Navy Cadets – both of which are looking forward to being involved in the commemoration.
Planning is underway and you can expect to see information starting to be released after the middle of October. If you can, please keep this date available – we would love to see a good crowd this year.
I wish you all a safe and happy start to October and look forward to seeing you at the club.

Firstly, it is with sadness that the RSA golf section received the sad news that Wayne Sharrock passed away in the week leading up to the tournament. Many golf section members attended his memorial farewell at the RSA on Saturday, 14 September. Our thoughts and support are with Janet Sharrock.
Sunday, 15 September followed a night of rain, but the Warkworth course was open and allowed carts. The day was cool with a chilly wind, but rain stayed away and all 22 golfers who competed in the shootout got to the clubhouse without getting soaked (unlike the last game at Warkworth).
The course was in great condition considering the rain although some people had a lot of unwanted contact with trees.
The International team consisted of Paul Askew, John Marston, John Malan, Gerald Malan, Dave Bolton, Bruce Forward, Bryce Tippert, Paul Thompson, Ric Bardsley and Kevin Bradford (honorary International).
The kiwi team consisted of Craig Edwards, Michael Black, Adrienne Renton, Lloyd Banton, Ian Price, Debbie Wylde, Adrianna Stewart, Dyan Baird, Mark Smith, Nigel Pool and Arty Clarke.
Eleven pairs played with the following results: Dave beat Craig 4/3, Blackie beat Atholl 5/4, Adrienne beat Gerald, 3/2, John Marston beat Lloyd 6/5, Jug beat John Malan 2 up, Adrianna beat Bruce 6/5, Dyan beat Brce 7/6, Ric beat Tex 3/1, Nigel beat Paul T 7/6, Paul A beat Debbie 1 up (down to the last putt on the last hole), and Kevin and Arty tied their match. The Internationals scored a total of 4 1/2 points, the kiwis scored 6 1/2 points. Congratulations to all on the kiwi team who have retained the trophy.
The Shootout trophy was accidentally left behind at the RSA, so the first photo is of Paul Askew presenting a trophy loaned from the bar to Craig Edwards. Afterwards, back at the RSA, another photo was taken of John Marston presenting the Shootout trophy to Craig.
Next month’s event is on 20 October at Huapai Golf Course with a 11am tee. It is random pairs day. The following month is our away trip up north.
The full amount for the trip is now due and it was decided at the AGM to cap it at $200. Please pay the remaining $150 to John Marston or the golf section bank account, by 21 October.
More details will follow about the away trip, but we are playing at Northland and Sherwood Park, staying at Central Park Motel and eating dinner at the Whangarei RSA.

Club days are Wednesday nights and Saturday. Thursday Night Snooker Club is ticking along well, though numbers are down due to members taking holidays.
It is great to see members of different clubs in the RSA making the most of the many sports offered. We have had two of our snooker club members go to Warkworth RSA to play in a darts competition while the 8 ball players have joined
Spring is here at last and the weather is starting to improve. We hope to see all of our members at our monthly meetings.
It is time to think about Christmas and to let our members know that tickets for the Christmas luncheon will be on sale at our October and November meetings. The cost of the luncheon is $25. We always have a fun afternoon and look forward to getting together to celebrate the coming of Christmas.
Our next meeting is on 1 October starting from 12pm. We will have a talk by Sandy McGill who
We are delighted to have been welcoming new members to the Indoor Bowling Club; but there is plenty of room for more. We are a happy bunch, who meet for friendship, a cup of tea or coffee and a social game of indoor bowls thrown in for good measure. Everything is provided, including help and instruction if needed….. so no experience is necessary.
Indoor Bowling is great: it’s never too cold, too hot, too windy or too wet.
Entry fee is $4 per afternoon, which pays for our afternoon tea, any necessary replacement of
Another busy month for the darts section saw the usual Wednesday night darts action supplemented by a couple of other darting competitions. There’s also been a further spruce up of the darts area with a new wall covering behind the dart boards.
The first competition for the month was the return fixture with the Warkworth RSA on 19 September. Our team was impacted due to a variety of reasons including a Zoom wedding, a boat
us sometimes for snooker.
It is now snooker competition season. The Singles Snooker Championship will commence on 4 October and more competitions such as Handicap Singles and Handicap Doubles will follow. Watch this space for results.

mishap and a hospital stay saw some of our top players unavailable. Whilst these might sound a bit like the dog ate my homework excuse, our team of 12 players put up a positive showing with some excellent wins in what was another enjoyable evening with the Warkworth RSA players.
The result wasn’t quite as close as the home fixture a couple of months earlier with Warkworth RSA retained the Curren Shield. Thanks to the Warkworth RSA for their hospitality. Thank you to our Sponsor ATLAS Concrete for providing the
RSA bus for our team to travel away and to our bus driver, Dave, for getting us safely there and back.

club rooms and sponsored by Midway Flooring. This was also the day when daylight saving started resulting in a few weary people only just getting there before the official start time.
Again some great darts with a number of matches in the round-robin pools which could have gone either way, with the top four players from each of the round-robin brackets qualifying for the Finals. CONGRATULATIONS to our overall winner Charles Smith
The Plate final saw some fierce darts with Joe and Wendy progressing through to the finals with Joe managing to hold off a barrage of high scores from Wendy to take the win. CONGRATULATIONS to our Plate Winner Joe Watts.
Highest Out – 103 Charles
Highest Score – 174 Joe Watts
100+ score – Joe, Charles, Atholl, Nadine, Mark, Wendy, Michelle, Gerhard, Shaun
There will be no special events planned for October with the darts section practising hard on Wednesday to ensure there’ll be a good showing for the “Tradie Wars” Open Darts Tournament on Sunday 3 November at the Hibiscus Coast Community RSA.

At 6pm every evening that the club is open, the ode is read out and a moment of silence is held in remembrance. If you are in the club at this time please stand and remain in silence for the duration of the ode.
All RSA clubs that are open do this (some, just one night and some every night). It is a long standing tradition to remind us all of the sacrifices made. In most places the Ode is now read in both English and Te Reo Māori during formal commemorations.
When it comes to choosing the perfect hard flooring for your home, the decision often narrows down to a choice between Laminate and Engineered Timber Both options oer unique benefits and challenges. Making the choice depends on your specific home, lifestyle, needs and preferences
Laminate Flooring
Advantages:
Price: Generally, more aordable than Engineered Timber
Durability: Highly resistant to scratches, stains and fading A great choice for families and sunny homes
Stability: Good resistance to expansion and contraction when exposed to sunlight
Maintenance: Low maintenance and very easy to clean
Variety: Available in a wide range of designs, boards sizes, textures and colours Unlike real timber, because laminate is a man-made product , you can choose the look
Disadvantages:
Feel: Can feel less natural underfoot compared to real timber
Repair: Dicult to repair if damaged; often requires replacing the entire plank or run of planks
Moisture Resistance: While the surface and joins are waterproof or water resistant (depending on the range) we don’t recommend this product for bathrooms, toilets or laundries
Refinishing: Cannot be sanded or refinished
Advantages:
Appearance: Provides the natural beauty and warmth that can only be created with real wood
Durability: More stable than solid wood, with better resistance to changes in temperature and humidity
Refinishing: Can be sanded and refinished, extending its lifespan
Feel: Feels more like traditional hardwood underfoot
Value: Adds higher resale value to a home compared to laminate
Disadvantages:
Price: More expensive than laminate flooring
Installation: While this product can be laid ‘ floating’ we recommend this product is glued to the subfloor All skirting boards will need to be removed
Maintenance: When compared to a laminate, engineered timber requires regular maintenance to keep it looking its best .
Variation: Because each plank is cut from a real tree there can be a lot of variation between planks in things like colour, knots and grain which cannot be controlled (this could be seen as an advantage)
Scratch Resistance: Engineered Timber is more susceptible to scratches and dents compared to laminate
Fade Resistance: Engineered Timber will fade over time, especially in direct sunlight We recommend window coverings and UV tint , reducing the woods exposure to light
