It’s a wonderful time of year with lots of festivities and celebrations going on everywhere. Our staff will be taking a wellearned break for a couple of weeks over Christmas and New Year. Until then, there is a lot happening that all members, guests, and visitors can participate in to help make this a month to remember.
The prizegiving night last Friday was a great success and I would like to thank all those sections and supporters who were able to attend and participate. All going well, this will become an annual event, and, with more advance notice and planning, we will have most, if not all, of our sections along to enjoy the celebrations.
The Future Subcommittee has discussed a range of changes, both large and small, around the club to help improve the décor and layout. With these changes we will be seeking to diversify so that the facilities can be better utilised - starting the process to establish additional sources of income. You will start to see some of the changes taking place in the first three or four months of 2025. The more significant changes require a lot more investment and planning, which means they are going to take a bit longer to get underway.
In the meantime, come along to the club and enjoy all that we have on offer leading up to Christmas. Make the most of this time with family and friends – the New Year is just around the corner and 2025 is shaping up to be a year of changes and adjustments.

The HBCRSA headed up north on Saturday, 16 November, for our yearly away trip. Twentyfour golfers travelled to compete in the two day tournament for the Jacket. Sherwood Park, Whangarei was the first golf course. It was very picturesque, with lots of large, mature trees around the course. The greens were rather slow which challenged many members, but the course was in overall good condition and we enjoyed our round there. The members were very welcoming and friendly, and we enjoyed beverages in the club house afterwards. The field was divided into divisions to compete for closest to the pin and longest drive prizes. Longest drive for Division One was won by Jug (Ian) Price, and the closest to the pin by Dave Bolton. Division Two - Debbie Wylde won both the longest drive and the closest to the pin. There were no twos scored. NAGA, with the lowest Stablefords, was ‘won’ by Jock (Peter) Thomson. The best Stableford prize was won on a countback with Jug, on 36 points and awarded to John Marston. The lowest gross
was scored by Dave Bolton with a score of 86. The best net for the day was won by Shayne Webster, who scored a net 66. This put Shayne into the lead position heading into Sunday. The combined Stableford raffle score was 717, and was won by Bob Warrington with his guess of 716. Thank you to Wendy for organising all the raffle draws and even selling tickets to the locals in the bar!
The group travelled to The Central Court Motel in Whangarei to stay overnight. (Yes, feedback was sent about the scratchy winter sheets!) A courtesy bus transferred everyone to The Bunker Bar and Cafe, within the Whangarei
RSA building. A delicious dinner was had by all, followed by the official presentation of trophies for the most recent golfing year. John Milan
and Tex won the pairs trophy. Dave Bolton won the lowest gross - with a score of 80. Shayne Webster won the highest Stableford score of the year - sorry can’t find the score but obviously well over 40! Blackie (Michael) Black won the most consistent golfer award with his average of 34.4
Stablefords over the year, and Paul Thompson won the NAGA of the year. Jug presented John Marston with a Lifetime Membership of the RSA Golf Section Award in recognition for all that he has done over the years to keep the golfing section afloat and successful. An evening of pool, darts and karaoke ensued before the courtesy bus returned everyone back to the motel. The weather had been kind on the Saturday, with just a sprinkle of rain and moderate temperatures. Sunday morning was very brisk, but some blue sky and sun appeared which was optimistic. The bus brought all of the golfers to the golf course, where we had breakfast at The Hole in One Cafe. Apologies to all members on the trip - this breakfast experience was very below par and we will not be visiting that venue again in future trips.
The field was arranged into six groups, with the lowest Stableford group heading off first, followed in order up to the final groups challenging for the Jacket. Shayne Webster, Ian Price, John Marston and Paul Askew were in the final group leading the scores. Unfortunately the blue sky was quickly overtaken by ominous grey clouds and a solid wet front rolled over Northland and set in. A few golfers managed to complete nine holes before abandoning the game, but most huddled at the club house after seven holes, refusing to go on. The weather was cold and miserable and all that most everyone wanted to do was to get dry and get a drink. The score over seven holes was used to calculate winners for the second day and combined with day one for the following results.
No long drives were awarded as this was hole 10 and not played by anybody. There were three divisions for closest to the pin and they were won by John Marston, Tex (Mark) Smith and Bob Warrington. There were two 2’s - Jug and Ric. The best Stableford score for the day was won by Ric Bardsley, with 18 over seven
holes. The best gross was won by Jug with 29. NAGA was once again Peter Thomson, and of course he was overall NAGA for the weekend - tough weekend Jock. The best combined net
score over the weekend and the Jacket winner for the 2024 away trip, was Jug (Ian) Price. Congratulations Jug and all of the other winners. Arty was able to creatively work out who won the Stableford guess for Sunday, and the money was won by Atholl Freel.
It was a disappointing end to the away weekend Northland Golf Course was in lovely condition and it was a shame we only got to see a small part of it. Perhaps we can return there in future and try again to play golf in the ‘winterless north’ that was very wintery on Sunday.
The bus travelled back to Auckland ahead of planned schedule, delivering all golfers and their gear to the RSA. Thank you to Craig for driving the bus, Arty for pulling a trailer for all the golf gear, and the committee members who organised the overall details of our 2024 away trip.

The winners of the Men’s Chosen Pairs were Dave Addy and Gordon Judge, the runners up were Derrick Betty and Jason Danilo.
The winner of the Ladies Singles was Jenny Cowden, and the runner up was Angela Hillman.
It has been great to note that for the last two months we have been getting high numbers for our Thursday night Snooker Club.
The Open Snooker Singles competition has been played and the winner is Hayden Brown and the runner-up is Dale Rowley.
The tournament final was played over seven frames. At the end of frame six the score was three frames each. The final frame went to the last ball to decide the winner. What a nail biter of a game and very exciting to watch!
The 8 Ball Club also has an end of month big prize night, where the pot, less the admin costs, is paid out in first, second and third prizes. We hold this on the last Wednesday of the month. The cost for the evening is $7. Depending on the numbers, either singles or doubles are played. These nights are attracting more players, doubles are played when there are larger numbers.
The last Club playing date for the year will be Wednesday 18 December 2024 and this will be a big payout night.
Club games will re-commence on Saturday 18 January 2025.

The first trip in November was on the 11th an auspicious day for any RSA member being Armistice Day when we remember the agreement to stop thhe fighting of the First World War.
The day started out with a light drizzle and some fog and although the forecast was for light winds they picked up during the day and we had a challenge with the vessel pointing into the wind and the incoming tide running to the bow of the boat.
However, the fishing was excellent and once the Skipper saw signs on his fish finder and anchored up, there was no need to shift for the next few hours. In fact we had our limit by lunchtime with some nice 40-45cm Snapper as well as your Club Captain landing a very nice 13.35Kg Kingfish.
We were accompanied on the trip by a young woman who is contracted by MAF to count and measure all fish caught on KiwiAngler including the undersized ones which are returned to the sea. It was pleasing that on this occasion the ratio of “keepers” v throwbacks was about 1:1.
The second trip was on Monday 25 November with clear skies and minimal wind. There were a number of “work-ups” on our way out with lots of
birds and dolphins around. The Skipper anchored up in the 35 metre mark and the fish were on the bite immediately. The size of the fish in general were larger than the previous trip but there were also a lot more under-sized fish as well.
By 1pm we had our limit and were able to come home early. Greg Magness took home the $20 with two very nice Snapper and is now on the leader board with the heaviest Snapper at 4.34Kg.
John Perris Club Captain
At the Remembrance Service on Sunday 10 November, I was reminded of people who suffered in both World Wars. My Grandfather Gordon developed multiple sclerosis when a shell arrived in his trench and he saw a 19 year old cut in half by this terrible act of war. It took him three years until he died in 1921 but he had slowly become paralized during the time that he survived.
The pages of the Artillery regiment booklet which you see in this article reminded me of how we greeted the end of the war. I was visiting friends in a small village called Aboyne, where they had a huge bonfire with a figure of Hitler on top. There was much celebration. My mother and sisters celebrated in a street party in Aberdeen.
We were all horrified, especially my mother when we found out that my father was still fighting on the outskirts of Dunkirk which had remained active because the German Commander was a dedicated Nazi. As the roll of honour shows, five of my father’s Unit were killed as late as 20th May 1945.
Supposedly war ended on 7 May with the ceasefire order.
