President’s Report How to keep our members happy in tough times We are already a quarter of the way through the current financial year and, as promised, this month’s letter brings you fully up to date with where we are in our development of the club and the use your money. It also reinforces the notion that this is YOUR club and no one person or committee has a mandate to rule without consultation with the owners – and those owners are you. Your views, good or bad, on what we are doing are welcome verbally, written or emailed – they will always be taken up at our monthly meetings. The club has struggled in the opening three months of this financial year, as I am sure you have, with the countrywide and seemingly relentless rise in the cost of living, petrol, interest rates and mortgages – in fact every imaginable item you can think of. The average cost increase in club supplies and services is well in excess of 20% year-on-year and many costs have risen more than 50% in the same period. Through all this, we have tried to keep our services up and our prices held – pretty hard work given that some vegetables these days cost so much they probably need to be sold on the stock-market rather than the supermarket. From the AGM held in September this year, your Executive Committee is pressing forward with the aim of judicious utilisation of funds and efficient management of our club.

switching Sky Sport for TVNZ+. Fixed costs like rates and water are hard to change and are ever increasing. We owe a debt of gratitude to our staff and members who have stepped up to fill the gap under a policy of no replacements for attrition. On Tuesday and Thursday, for example, the 8-ball and snooker clubs volunteer one of their members to stay around with the bar manager until lock up which allow us to save on one extra staffer after 8pm to cover our safety programmes.

I have stated to many of you in the past, it is our bar, restaurant, pokies, events and functions that creates the income for us to pay staff and run our community club. Bar turnover is steady and pokies are down with a larger than expected string of jackpots which, as you know, occur randomly. Good news for the punters, but something we could have done without. We have replaced four machines and upgraded one, got one new one under insurance which gives us six machines of our 15 with the latest games and nowhere near as troublesome as our vintage machines for maintenance. As outlined at the AGM, we are a long way off being out of the woods yet. It is a delicate balance keeping services up to members to encourage more participation and implementing the mandated cost-cutting programme this year to pick up $50k in expenditure savings. Still we look to have picked up more than $35k so far this year starting with Page 1

We told you at the AGM that losses would be felt again this year as we finished off capital purchases like replacement for our more than 20-year-old pokies and a building that will never be fit-for-purpose and drains our financial reserves severely every year. The ventilation needed for compliance in our building WoF is underway and should be up and

running in time for summer, if we ever get one. Even then, in the second half of 2024 we will probably need to look at upgrading ventilation in the restaurant and function rooms. Never ending it seems and we await with trepidation any new surprises from this old building. Our restaurant fridges were bought second-hand in 2017 and are nearing the end of their economic life. We are looking to reactivate one of the long confidence this year given today’s economic climate and a tightening of belts everywhere. As you will recall, we set up the reserves of $1.8 million as $1.5 million invested for a year at six percent, $200,0000 thousand on for six months at 5.95 percent and $100,000 on a 32day call account to cover any budgeted financial shortfall -- offset by the $90K to be earned on our longer-term year-long deposits.

these days thanks to great staff. The Executive Committee is looking to have a number of longer-term options for you to consider by the end of the year or early next year. This could range from staying where we are at a cost, selling up and moving to a new location with enhanced reserves to downsizing with strategic investment like the Manurewa RSA or even amalgamating with another club to develop further the Hibiscus Coast Community aspect of the RSA.

That 32-day call will probably be fully utilised or held in an interest bearing on-call account by the end of the FY in June 2024 but covered largely by the interest earned from our fixed deposit. Before this current financial year, all interest was being accepted by the club monthly and added to our income. It is now accumulated. Membership is steadily growing and the restaurant reputation for quality has spread to the point where it now supplements club income substantially. A recent Wednesday night raffle attracted 172 members signed in -- a record over recent months. We had nine functions last month from birthday parties to funerals and are rapidly gaining a reputation in the district as the venue of choice and not only because of the excellent price and services. There is a great culture throughout the club

Remember we are always open to new ideas and compliments or complaints about what we are doing. Full contact details are in this issue. That said, the club is thriving in terms of member participation in an ever-increasing number of events and our solid progress in becoming the community hub for the district. We stand ready to support community activities affected by the four-month closure of the Orewa Community Centre. Just give our manager Vini a call and we will see how we can help out. David Newman

Club Reports Womens Section Our next meeting will be on 7 November and Sharon Blow will entertain us. It is always a pleasure to have Sharon and her music is enjoyed by everyone. It will be Melbourne Cup Day and so you should get out your hat or fascinator for the occasion. There will be prizes for the best hats and it is always fun to see what designs people have come up with. There will also be a $2 sweepstake and you may win that as well. If you have any items for the sales table, they will be gladly received by the ladies who run

this. There are always interesting items to be purchased. A reminder that our Christmas get together will be on 5 December and tickets will need to be purchased for this. The last chance to get these tickets will be at our next meeting on 7 November at a cost of $20 per person. We look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting. Jennie Champion Secretary

Snooker Club The Thursday night Snooker is still being well attended and it is pleasing to have new people coming to try their hand at it. The Drawn Handicap Snooker Pairs Competition started slowly because of illness but is now one match away from semifinals. Special thanks to those who accepted change was necessary because of members in hospital.

The area in front of the Snooker table has Snooker and 8 ball cues hanging on the wall. Please make sure you remove your cues before 28 November because the remaining ones will be auctioned off some time in December. John Walding Snooker Captain

The RSA team did us proud last year and no doubt they will repeat that performance. Following the demise of the PT Chevalier RSA and now Howick; we are seeking reassurance

Golf Club Fourteen golfers turned up to play our October Pairs at Warkworth Golf Course and to compete for the Jacket. The course was in good shape and the greens were great - and fast. We were able to get away even earlier than scheduled and played in lovely spring weather - no rain, just a bit of wind. There weren’t any two’s scored. The longest drives were won by Athol Freel and Dyan Baird. Closest to the pins in two were won by Dave Bolton and Janet Sharrock. Closest to the pins in one were won by John Marston and Debbie Wylde. Well done to all of these golfers. Best gross for the day was 81 and won by Craig ‘Bubba’ Edwards. The best Stableford with 35 points was won by Michael Black. The best net score for the day with 71, and our October Jacket winner, was Janet Sharrock.

October Pairs Winner Michael Black & Paul Askew Well done to all of our winners on the day. The away trip is coming up fast and full payment is required by the end of October, $180 as outlined in the last email. Those travelling by bus need to meet at the RSA between 7 and 7.15am on Saturday 11 November. It will depart promptly at 7.30am for a Paeroa 10.30am tee time and there won’t be a breakfast stop, so have your Weetbix or Vogels toast before you leave home. Dinner is booked for Saturday night at a restaurant very close to the accommodation and the local RSA is also within walking distance. Please visit the Hibiscus Coast RSA Web page for all the latest news from the club

Jacket Winner Janet Sharrock Excellent golfing you three. NAGA was won on a countback allowing Alan Holsted to narrowly escape the accolade. Our winner, Cheryl Freel, made it clear off the first tee the prize she was shooting for, although we were pleased to hear she did improve over the course of the round. Paul Thompson made an excellent guess of 420 to win the Stableford raffle (actual total was 418). Random pairs were drawn after the round and the combined score totalled to decide the winning pair. Michael Black and Paul Askew happily accepted the trophy. Page 6

Fishing Club There were three trips scheduled for October. The first on 2 October was cancelled with gale warnings in force and this report needed to be forwarded before the last trip scheduled for 30 October. That just leaves the trip on 16 October to report on. The weather was fine, and the seas calm as we motored out for about an hour directly towards the tip of the Coromandel. We anchored amongst a number of Gannets that were floating on the surface having sated their appetite following a large work-up evidenced by the fact here were quite a number of recreational boaties in the same vicinity. The first fish was a very respectable 1.3Kg John Dory caught by Colin Capstick after which the snapper came on board thick and fast, and we were able to weigh anchor early having caught our limit not long after lunch. David Aickin caught the Snapper of the day weighing in at 4.1Kg – The photo below is of David (on the right) and Bryan Meade showing off their catches. Several Kahawai were caught and Ken Beehre went on the leader board with one weighing 2.84Kg as well as a 1.59Kg

David Aicken & Bryan Meade Trevally. Brian Rosser is also on the leader board with a 0.72Kg Gurnard. John Perris

I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour, but by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.’

As seems to be an ongoing trait bowler numbers usually remain less on a Tuesday than a Thursday but in saying that numbers are improving on both days as we have welcomed Page 7
