What a fantastic tribute this year’s Anzac Day turned out to be. It was best summed up in the presentations on the day by Commander Butcher and RSA Pastor Corser - messages of hope for the future, peace in the present and a reverent remembrance of the past.
I was under doctor’s orders following a recent setback and did not make it to the 6am Dawn Parade but I am told by those who did attend that we had a very strong turnout, equal to, and some say surpassing, the 11am turnout which I attended.
The crowd at 11am was estimated around 700 with 100 or so participants, a wonderful endorsement of our plans to remember and support our servicemen and women best by making the community part of our mantra and the club part of the community.
A moving and thoughtful speech was given by Commander John Butcher, MNZM AFNI, RNZNR. He and the RSA pastor, Phil Corser, amazed afterwards at the common theme of their presentations although they had not met up at all in the year since the last ceremony a year ago.
Many came into the RSA clubrooms afterwards to share and partake in our hospitality. The upshot was 30 new members signing up on the spot.
A special thank you to our many volunteers who have done so much behind the scenes leading up to Anzac Day.
As always, the Women’s Section were
heavily committed in the lunch preparation, presentation and clean up.
They also had their voice heard through the efforts of Kay Chilman who was part of a subcommittee organising the event along with club general manager Vini RangihaetaStockman and MC on the day David Dryden.
Thanks to the men who have been tending our grounds including the re-painting of our building. This includes the roof painting, painting of the outside white walls, and the gable end of our front entrance.
The final painting was still happening late on the Wednesday evening, before Anzac Day the next morning. Much of the paint was donated and the volunteers time and effort got the jobs done.
At the sharp end, we saw a tireless demonstration of planning, leadership, motivation and organisation from the club’s General Manager Vini and support from an equally motivated and committed staff team.
After the lunch, music and entertainment was provided and a real hit for the many children. Fantastic to see them in the RSA. They are, after all, our future and with their parents and grandparents the lifeblood of the club in a community centre charged with remembering

the valiant efforts of those who fought or contributed to the defence of our democracy.
The Poppy collection money is mostly invested into the Poppy Foundation under the Ranfurly Trust - a veterans’ focused support group who currently handle the evaluation and payments for requests made to us by our Returned and Ex-service members (REM) for medical like assistance.
We have a separate fund for applications for support from REM for related claims not covered by the Poppy Foundation.
We are hoping in the future to be able to offer some sort of similar claim and pay out system for our associate members under separate funding.
Much of the food for the day was donated by Pak’nSave Silverdale and turned in a feast by our RSA Women’s Section.
I was reminded of their efforts when I bumped into two of the Women’s Section at Pak’nSave while I was picking up our regular weekly Raffle Meat order from their butchery department.
Many of you would not be aware but Bunnings Silverdale recently ran a Sausage Sizzle with all profits being donated to our Poppy Fund.
They also then offered, to run another Sausage Sizzle on Anzac Day.
A huge thank you to Bunnings and Pak’nSave Silverdale for Anzac Day support along with the many supporters who took to the streets and the businesses who carried our collection boxes. Early returns suggest we will surpass last year’s efforts.
It is positive teamwork and respect for each other that makes us and our country a great place to live. It has really shown me that, yes, we do have a fantastic and very supportive membership and community.
Thanks to you all for your help, time, effort and support and for being part of the Hibiscus Coast RSA team.
The Aussies reckon they are members of the lucky country but we Kiwis of all persuasions and heritage proudly share the claim.
Our bond is never better shown than in the words and hidden heart embodied in our celebration of ANZAC Day as a symbol of peace - hard-earned and well-remembered.

We do not have a joining fee but do ask if you intend to continue playing after an initial four days you do apply to become a financial member of the HBCRSA if not already, once you have acquired membership of that and provide our bowls club secretary with details and membership number you will be recognized as a full member of the Bowling Club. Our planned trip to the Birkenhead RSA for a snooker competition went well. We played two games of singles each and then one game of doubles. Despite our valiant efforts we were not able to match the skill of our opponents, but it was a very enjoyable afternoon.
Because of ANZAC day we held our Snooker Club night on Friday instead of Thursday last week.
Though only nine players attended, those enthusiasts had a fun night.
If you would like to enjoy an evening of snooker with us, please come along at 6.45pm on a Thursday evening.
A reminder to bowlers there will be no play on Tuesday 7 May as it is Women’s Section day. Happy bowling everyone.
Merlyn Jacob SecretarySunday, 21 April was indeed a colourful day with 25 members turning up wearing their best and brightest in remembrance of all of our past golfers who are no longer with us. We raised a special toast to the two we lost this past year - Mattie Oakes and Max Pennington - you are both much missed.
The rain held off but it was a windy, blustery autumn day which made for challenging holes hitting into that wind. Overall scores were not high, with many golfers competing for NAGA. Despite many contenders, Bryce Tippert took it out with just 18 Stablefords.
The lowest gross was 83, shot by Mike Blackgood game in that wind.
The longest drives were won by Shayne Webster and Cheryl Freel. Closest to the pin was won by Dyan Baird. Unusually, no male golfers made the green.
Closest in two was won by Dre Clarke - Arty’s grandson, but no female golfers made this
green. The best Stableford prize was won by John Gillespie with 35 points. The ONLY golfer to shoot better than his handicap, with an excellent score of 41 Stableford points and a net score of 69 was Shayne Webster who is the Jacket winner for our April tournament.
The raffle Stableford total was 697. This
prize was shared between Debbie Wylde and John Marston who guessed 696 and 698 respectively. The prize for the most colourful golfer was chosen by secret ballot and was a worthy recipient. John Marston, rocking the pink! Unfortunately for him, Shayne Webster received a fine for not dressing up in bright enough colours - a good lesson in reading the emails. Well done to all of our winners.
Next month our tournament will be held at Helensville golf course on 19 May with a tee time of 10.30am. The following month we are going to try Takapuna Golf Course. At only $40 a round it is a good price - however we have to pay in advance to secure the booking.
Please add YES or NO on the form which is on the club board for Takapuna as well as a YES or a NO for the upcoming Helensville tournament. Payment of $40 for Takapuna will be collected at Helensville on 19 May.
Visit the Hibiscus Coast RSA web page for all the latest news from the club.

If you wish to join the 8 Ball club it is $20 per year, and you need to be an existing HBCRSA member. The cost for the afternoon or evening is $5 per person. Anyone from the RSA can participate in the 8 Ball games, however to be eligible to play in the club competitions you need to be an 8 Ball club member and should have played at least twice between tournaments.
Our tournament for April was the June Lyall Memorial Trophy for drawn pairs this was held on Saturday 20 April 2024. First place went to Peter Grimes and Nicky Correia, and runners up were Bronni van der Linden and Gordon Judge.
We are looking to resume our monthly Ladies night, but we need more ladies to join us. If any ladies are interested, please contact us. It is a good opportunity if you have not played for a while, want to brush up your skills but do not want to join the Wednesday and Saturday games with the men.
May is our birthday meeting and those who have bought tickets for this event will enjoy a get together with many other Women’s Sections from around Auckland.
There will be raffles and a sales table and a meal will be served. The entertainment will be provided by Megan Clark and the afternoon promises to be a very enjoyable time for everyone.
On 4 June, we are looking forward to a talk to be given by Inspector Mark Fergus from the NZ Police who was posted to Vanuata as a Senior Police adviser.
We would like to invite friends, including husbands and partners to this meeting to listen
We have also started our end of month big prize night, where the pot, less the admin costs, is paid out in first, second and third prizes. This is held on the last Wednesday of the month. The cost for the evening is $7.
If anyone is interested in playing pool, please come along and join us. New members are very welcome.
to this talk which will give a great insight into his experiences and will be very interesting and informative.
Jennie Champion SecretaryThere were two trips scheduled in April but unfortunately the second one was cancelled as the weather forecast did not look promising. Whilst the morning of 22 April looked OK and the forecast was for winds of 20 knots, the reading from Tiri Island at midday showed an average wind speed of 30 knots peaking at 33 knots and 38 knots later In the afternoon. It was definitely the right call to cancel.
The first trip was with “regulars” on the 8th and the Skipper was keen to ensure after some slow months we had the opportunity to get amongst the Snapper schools feeding up for winter. We motored out for over an hour in a direct line to the tip of the Coromandel until there were some good signs on the fish finder in a depth of 50 metres.
As seems to be the recent pattern we started off with quite a few undersized fish but then
the bigger ones started to get in on the action. There was no need to shift although we did have to contend with a couple of Sharks taking
quite a bit of our gear!
David Aickin caught a nice 2.1Kg Trevally to go on the leader board for that species and followed that up with the best Snapper of the day at 4Kg caught on some fresh bait. A few Kahawai were also caught and it was good to get back to the marina and share six Snapper each.
