Two years on the roller coaster comes to an end Update from President David Newman

This is my last monthly report as club president after two years of service to our members.

Annual General Meeting 10am 15 September 2024

I am delighted that, with support from the executive committee and volunteers, we are back to a safe and compliant club with a welltrained support staff and an ever-increasing range of activities and entertainment for members.

What has been especially pleasing is that no qualified “Returned or Ex Service member” has been turned away from welfare support. It is typical of the attitude of those for whom the club was formed that they see welfare support on a need basis rather than an entitlement.

Despite the fact that we make sure all members know that the welfare service is, in fact, an entitlement available on demand and on an absolutely confidential basis, there are only a few each month who avail of the service saying they are happy to pay if they can afford it. Thank you.

Less pleasing was that it fell to me and this committee to ring the alarm bells that after 14 after years of subsidising operating losses we have to address “the elephant in the room” if we are going to survive. This alone is an incentive for you to get to the Annual General Meeting and have your say.

Plenty believe they have the magic elixir to restore the club to its former glory but I firmly believe the presidents and committees before me were all made up of genuinely decent people who had the wellbeing of the club at heart.

Unfortunately, well intentioned ideas, borrowing and subsidies from reserves cannot last forever. That is why we have concrete options available at the AGM from which you can choose and help plot a profitable future. Some hard decisions to make this year whatever way you decide to go.

I wish to thank those among the committee who have contributed, added and generally worked

behind the scenes on a wide range of club needs. That is team work to me. Personally, I think we have done reasonably well after coming out of the restrictive Covid years.

Many businesses in the hospitality sector have not got through and been forced to close. We bit the financial bullet and have weathered the storm at a substantial cost.

We had to replace or repair building defects and deal with long-ignored maintenance issues like a dangerously leaking roof, lack of ventilation for the Building WoF and rotting timbers that stood in the way of providing a safe environment for members. The battle goes on – this is an old building, formerly chicken sheds before we arrived, and sadly, the chickens have come home to roost.

I thank our volunteer or honorary solicitor Chris Hunt from North Harbour Law and Cornelius du Plessis of Kudos Murray Audit Ltd, our auditor. You both have freely given timely guidance throughout the year and thank you for the offer to continue in those roles for the next 12 months.

This newsletter is just over a week out from our Annual General Meeting on 15 September 2024 starting at 10am. You need to be financial to attend. As President I am asking you to please attend if you want a future for this club.

Doors open 9am and closed for AGM at 10am sharp. Candidates are listed alphabetically by surname. Candidates can only hold one position.

AGM will be exploring the option that you as members vote on at the AGM. OK, it is a Sunday morning which does not suit everyone but it is always held on a weekend day to respect those among us who are still working. There is also one remit up for discussion which, if accepted, will change our Hibiscus Coast Community RSA forever. So please try to be there and have your say, either as a “Returned and Ex Service” member or as an “Associate member”. Both types of membership have equal rights under our Constitution.

This 50/50 split is a reflection of our country’s generally stable way of life. No one group has the upper hand; we all have ‘one voice and one vote’ so to speak.

The only difference in membership entitlements currently is that “Returned and Ex Service” members are able to apply and receive financial support towards medical matters, from our annual Poppy Collection funds collected annually prior to Anzac Day.

Please, the whole direction of my words and thoughts are that we need to keep our Community RSA forging ahead and open for all.

This year we have more than the minimum required number of candidates standing for President (1), Vice-Presidents (2) and Committee (6). Plus the Women’s Section

representative which is an automatic position on Committee, voted in by Women’s Section themselves. So, a committee of 10. This gives you choice who to vote for, to get on to our Executive Committee. Thank you candidates and if you do not make it this year onto the committee, try again next year.

I am not standing, as I have said before, due to “life’s changes”. I do, though, get a seat at the committee meeting table, as immediate past president.

Finally, thank you to those members who use our facilities week on week and our volunteers who have participated and given time during the last year. It all helps us to operate and function as a group.

I keep mentioning it but, if you think you can volunteer and help in some way, then please do so no matter how small. Contact Reception who shall pass it on to committee for action/ response.

We all have various life experiences and talents that can help the club. A good example is helping on Wednesday Raffle Nights, “one committee member, plus two others needed”. It is actually an enjoyable teamwork generating thing to do.

Club reports

Golf Club

Winter weather is definitely impacting the golfing tournaments this year. With heavy rain on Saturday meaning no carts allowed plus windy, wet conditions forecast for the game, the booked field of 25 shrank to 14 hardy souls.

Helensville golf course had a lot of surface water but wasn’t excessively muddy. The greens were slow with the moisture. The course is wintering well and is in good overall condition.

The weather was very windy but the rain held off till the final few holes. Unfortunately it was very heavy so most golfers got pretty wet to finish off their round. The first group may have just escaped the downpour if they were quick to get in the clubhouse.

Prizes were switched up this month, with the 14 players divided into three handicap groups to play for the long drives and/or closest to the pin holes.

Cheryl Freel and Craig Edwards won long drive holes. Mark Smith and Gerald Milan won closest to the pin holes and Dave Bolton scored a two on hole 9. Craig Edwards won low gross with his score of 83 and best Stableford went to John Milan with 38. The Jacket winner for best net was a first time winner - Adriana Stewart. Congratulations to these golfers.

NAGA of the day was John Gillespie with his

Stableford total of 21. The total Stablefords was 402 (Average 28.7). Craig Edwards (401) and Adrienne Renton (403) shared the pot.

Next month is the Kiwis versus Internationals shootout at Warkworth - Sunday, 15 September with a 10am tee time. Sign up to represent your team and win a coveted engraved glass to add to your collection.

To while away the last month of winter, the darts section has held two internal competitions on Wednesday nights. First up was the Marston Masters Golf Tournament where golf was played on a dart board. No clubs were needed with bogeys, pars, birdies and eagles scored by hitting the required numbers, doubles and trebles on the first 18 numbers of the dart board. In a shortened format, the cut was made after the first round with the top 10 going through to the championship playoff. Pole position was held by Sel Panckhurst after the first round with 47 followed by Charles Smith on 59, and Shayne Webster on 62, with Joe Watts and Ramon Biggs hot on their heels with 65. Shayne unfortunately had to pull out of the final round due to being unable or more likely unwilling to cancel his holidays in Australia. This left Charles with a round of 62 to put the pressure on Sel who responded with another magnificent round of 47 and claim the very first Marston Masters Golf title.

The second tournament was the Mid-Winter Club Competition. Four groups played a series of round robin games over 3 weeks which resulted in the top players going through to

the championship and the rest to play for the Plate. The quarter and semi finals of the Plate resulted in Ray Cross taking on Bevan Edwards in the final. After a ding dong battle, Ray fought his way to the winning line by a score of 2 to 1.

The Championship had two very close semi finals with Charles Smith overcoming Sel Panckhurst 2 to 1 and Gerhard Smith sneaking through against Roz Millett also by 2 to 1. The final between the Smith brothers was a high quality affair started by Gerhard with a 121 followed by Charles responding with a 140.

The quality continued throughout the game, but experience eventually told with older brother Gerhard Smith overcoming Charles by 2 to 0 to become the inaugural Mid-Winter Champion.

Two events are planned in September with the first being a return fixture against Warkworth RSA to be held in Warkworth on Thursday 19 September.

The second event will be an open tournament on Sunday 29 September at the Hibiscus Coast Community RSA which we had to postpone from August. Check in will be at 9.30am ready for the draw to be made and play to commence by 10.15am. Entry is $25 for RSA members and $30 for nonmembers. Players can register on-line at https://www.hbcrsa.org. nz/darts-september-2024-open/ or via the QR code.

We are excited to announce our first major event “Tradie Darts Wars” planned for Sunday 3 November at the Hibiscus Coast Community RSA. Registrations open in a couple of weeks, so keep an eye out.

As you would have seen our new dart boards are up and we are adding the finishing touches to spruce up the darts area. Danny Lissington proudly sponsored the new RSA dart board. Danny has been a member of our RSA for over 30 years and is also a member of the Pool and Snooker clubs. When asked what Danny likes about the Darts Club, he responded: “I love experiencing the comradeship, the competitive banter and forming new friendships. Danny is a
