As you read this newsletter, we are only six weeks from the most important direction making Annual General Meeting for years.
Annual General Meeting
10am
15 September 2024
You will be asked to vote in a new president and give direction to enable a new committee to begin the journey to find a way to turn our club into a profit-making operation and secure our future, for decades to come.
I am pleased democratically that we have managed to get to this point. I am not standing again for president or committee, due to life’s changes; and we need fresh input.
The best way to help in the longer term is to join the process and stand, to become a member of the executive committee guiding the club. The time is here to help this club within your community, and make a positive difference for our future.
Remember, the Hibiscus Coast Community RSA is an asset where we live. If it goes, it is highly likely to be gone forever.
You should have now received the Future Options report by email in the last few days setting out the options the Executive Committee sees, for our future. It is marked “confidential for members only” so that, you can read through, understand, and come to our AGM informed and ready to participate and vote.
So stand for committee and be part of our future. Fresh faces, fresh ideas and positive input is required.
Those committee nominations close on Friday 23 August 2024 at 4pm. You just need to not have a criminal record or be bankrupt, be a paid up member and complete a nomination form with a seconder, like all other clubs and Incorporated societies. Many candidates for committee means good democracy.
I must thank member Pat Ryder for his time and efforts refurbishing a model of the battleship USS Missouri and donating it to the RSA. It was built by a friend of his who was ‘downsizing’ and will be on display in our museum.
It was on board this ship in Tokyo Bay that the agreement to end the war with Japan was signed, some 79 odd years ago. She, the Missouri still sits in Pearl Harbour, Hawaii.
Finally, thank you again to all our volunteers who work away on a whole range of things, to help keep our RSA functioning. Team work matters.
David Newman President
The next Meet and Greet Night will be held on Friday 16 August at 6pm.
You are all welcome to come along and meet new friends
We are looking for Volunteer to sell our internal raffles and Mega Draw raffles on a Wednesday evening. Please contact Reception 09 424 9026
The Hibiscus Coast Quilters had a marvellous “Shop Hop’ day to Whangarei in early July. Thank you very much to the RSA for this hire service and its volunteer driver Dave who looked after us for the day. We look forward to using the bus again. We’d love members to support us at our 2024 Quilt Exhibition on 17 and 18 August at the Orewa Community Centre.
This year net proceeds from our main quilt raffle will go to Hestia Rodney Women’s Refuge.
Bingo is held in the bar area every Wednesday afternoon starting at 1pm. There is also a fortnightly Thursday night bingo that starts at 7pm.
The very last game we run is the Snowball.
The Snowball big prize has to be won within a set number of calls and the prize money rises each week it doesn’t go.
The Snowball prize of $401 was won on Wednesday 24 July 2024
Well done Michelle.
The weather was not very kind and rain had the Warkworth golf course closed on Saturday. It was open on Sunday, 21 July but no carts were available, and a forecast of more rain coming meant the golfers were keen to start and get ahead of it.
Thirteen hardy golfers turned up to play. The course was very wet but not muddy and the greens were surprisingly firm.
Unfortunately, around the half way mark, the heavens opened and torrential rain pelted down and forced everyone to stop and retreat to the clubrooms. It was decided that the competition would be decided on 9 hole play as everyone had completed that much. Two groups began hole 10 and Janet Sharrock hit a great drive down the middle to get her name on the marker. But she was robbed of this accolade as the final group didn’t get to hole 10 due to the worsening weather.
The closest to the pin competition holes were also on the back nine, so no-one won those either. Craig Edwards got a 2, and Michael Black got low gross with his score of 39, also achieved by Craig. John Marston won the best stableford score with 18 points. The lowest net score and Jacket winner for July was Michael Black, with a 9 hole net score of 35. Congratulations to those golfers who played well despite the conditions.
NAGA was awarded to Atholl Freel who was so drenched he didn’t even hand his card in
but headed home to dry out and change. He was given the average Stableford score for the purposes of the raffle Stableford guess, which was won by Ian Price with his guess of 372. The bottle of whiskey raffle was won by Janet Sharrock (which made up for missing the long drive prize).

The AGM and prize giving was held at the Club on Friday 26 July. It was pleasing to see some 24 people in attendance which included the President (David Newman), Rex and Lynette Smith (Kiwi Angler owners) and members and partners.
Some of the trophy winners are shown below: The new fishing dates for 2024/2025 are on the notice board.
8 Ball
Club days are Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons.
Wednesday night 8 Ball starts at 7pm, names are to be on the board by 6.45pm.
Saturday 8 Ball starts at 1pm, names are to be on the board by 12.45pm.
Our tournament for 7 July was for the Ron Brown Memorial Trophy for Men’s Drawn Pairs, however, this did not go ahead due to low numbers being able to attend. A new date is to be arranged.
On Sunday 28 July 2024 we hosted a team from Warkworth. The result was fifteen games to twelve in HBC favour, so we now get to hold the trophy until next year.
The 8 Ball Club also has an end of month big prize night, where the pot, less the admin costs, is paid out in first, second and third prizes. We hold this on the last Wednesday of the month.
The Women’s Division has had a busy month. Our July meeting was well attended and the ladies enjoyed a dancing demonstration by Margo Sturmey’s great-grandchildren. Musical items from Wayne Woods were also well received.
Four of the committee attended the Auckland District Women’s Section Presidents Meeting at the Henderson RSA. These meetings are a very valuable way to keep in touch with what is going on and to join other Women’s Section groups.
Our next meeting will be on 6 August and we look forward to a talk by a representative from the Whangaparaoa Library to give us an insight into
The cost for the evening is $7.
During August 2024 we have two tournaments for the following:
Doubles Champions Trophy - Open Chosen Pairs on 3 August 2024 and the Jock & Vi Rennie Memorial Trophy for 65 years and over Open Drawn Pairs on 24 August 2024.
If anyone is interested in playing pool, please come along and join us.
New members are very welcome. We would also like more ladies to join us.
the services they can provide.
A reminder that it is now time to pay your yearly membership fee as these expired at the end of June.
We would also like donations for our trading table which is held every month. We would welcome household items that are in good clean condition and are no longer required. Items such as jigsaws, games, knitting patterns, baking, jam or pickles would also be appreciated.
Jennie Champion Secretary
Welcome to the first monthly report of the new and possibly improved Darts Section.
Having re-formed the darts section in May after a couple of years hiatus, it’s been a busy few months for the members. The observant members of the RSA may have noticed the darts area getting busier especially on a Wednesday night. The numbers taking part have increased from five or six at the beginning to regularly being 15 or more. You may also have noticed the new dartboards in the darts area. The purchase of these has been made possible thanks to donations from darts section member Danny Lissington, Haybro Construction and Atlas Concrete along with the assistance of Team Rhapsody in Silverdale.
The darts section has also taken part in two events since it was re-formed. The first was in June when a team of 10 took part in the RSA Victory Tournament at Swanson RSA. A good time was had by all those taking part. We’re also reliably informed that if the President had remembered correctly what was needed, he may have hit double 16 to win his pairs quarterfinal instead of the double 8 he actually hit.
The second event was a visit from the Warkworth RSA darts section in the middle of July. With a trophy on the line, the score was very close after the singles and Warkworth lead by 11 to
9. Unfortunately, the luck of the darts deserted us in the pairs and Warkworth pressed home their greater experience taking them out 9 to 1. Just to rub salt into the wounds, Warkworth then took out the 1001 full team game to make their overall win that little bit bigger. A good night of fun, banter and some serious darts with everyone looking forward to the return fixture when arranged.
The next event will be an open tournament on Sunday 25 August at the Hibiscus Coast Community RSA. Check in will be at 9.30am ready for the draw to be made and play to commence by 10.15am. Entry is $25 for RSA members and $30 for non-members.
If anyone is interested in playing with the darts section, please come along on a Wednesday night. Membership of the darts section is only $10 for the year which started at the beginning of July. By either lucky coincidence or astute planning, Wednesday is the same night as the main RSA draws so you also have the chance of winning a meat pack or the big draw prize even if your darts are a little bit iffy. The darting night officially starts at 7pm with some keen darters warming up well before that.
