Happy New Year to all our members Update from President David Newman It is great to be back after the holidays. Thank you Bevan for stepping in as Acting President for the three weeks, while I was away. My wife and I spent Christmas in Queenstown and New Year in Christchurch at the Hornby Club, which was a welcome change for Shirley and I after the last four years. Our immediate family were overseas. What a wonderful club that the locals have in Hornby; huge, they own land with much of it leased out to The Warehouse & others, and they have 11,500 odd members. And are successful doing all sorts of entertainment things, just like we try to do. Our year started on 9 January, with the club attracting good support in the first week back in 2024. The first Raffle (or Club Night) was a huge success, thanks to you the members. The Members Jackpot was not won, so it is now standing at $1300 for Wednesday 17. We have a tough year ahead and some major decisions that need to be made for us to survive. It has been a long, hard and expensive 18 months since we came out of the Covid years, and all the necessary maintenance work we have had to do, to stay legal and open. That said, I am happy to announce that all that remains in our current ‘futureproofing programme’ is for our roof and fascia to be painted. We still owe final payments on ventilation, pokies and the roof which will required to be paid in the next month or two. Let’s hope that we have come to the end of all the major maintenance catch up work, for a while. But the elephant in the room is the continued monthly operating costs which are not enough to cover expenses. As I have said for a while now, we are and have not made a profit, for at least some 14 years. We have trimmed entertainment, management and staff costs for 2024 and now that the major compliance and health and safety costs are over, with a fair wind we should pick us up as much as $100k in a year off our expenses. We are trying to maintain the excellent services we offer our members. Pool and snooker club members have stepped up to provide security for closing on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Further efficiencies and use of our volunteer base are in the offing.

Entertainment comes in many forms and executive committee member John Gillespie has stepped up to organise, for example, regular club darts tournaments; and will run a fun based club pool tournament in the near future. Thanks John. There are plans afoot to bring back Friday nights with free snacks and a few raffles to get back to the idea of dropping into the club at the end of the working week. Times change and we will be stepping up our rides offer to and from the club, for local members to keep our members safe on the roads. And easy to pop back to the club the next day to grab your car. We have regular security sweeps and an on-site resident volunteer to keep a weather eye out so your car should be safe overnight in our car park. This “ride” offer works on a donation basis for the service. We hope to find someone to run “card nights” and would welcome any other suggestions from members for more activities, because it is the use of premises that creates profit and for us to stay operating and paying our bills. Committee members are busy working on a presentation of the options available to us to ensure our future going forward to our EGM on 25 February 2024. This will outline the choices as we as a committee see them and cost implications, with at least 3-4 options for members to consider. We must have your input please, so be there. Golf Club Our annual four club challenge was held at Helensville this year on 11 December. With only four clubs allowed to be carried, golfers all had their preference about which clubs to take - and many rued their selection. It was windy, which made for challenging conditions. The golf course was in good shape and the weather was kind - with no rain and some warm sun later in the afternoon. Although we usually have a surprisingly high Stableford average for the four club challenge; that was not the case on Sunday. The total was 646, which is an average of only 28.8.

came along to deliver prizes for everybody which meant nobody went home empty handed. Hope golfing was enjoyed over the Christmas break and make sure you sign up for the Auckland RSA District tournament on 21 January. Details will follow in the new year. 18 February is booked for Wellsford Golf Club. There will be a compulsory additional charge of

The Stableford guess was won by Arty Clarke with his guess of 644. Many people thought they had a strong chance of being NAGA for the day, but that honour went to Bob Warrington with his total of 19 Stablefords. Long drives were won by Shayne Webster and Janet Sharrock. Closest to the pin in one was won by Dave Bolton for the men, but none of the women succeeded in reaching - and staying on this green. Closest to the pin in two were won by Ian Price and Debbie Wylde. The lowest gross score was 86 and won by Michael Black. Ian Price won the highest Stableford prize with his total of 35. The lowest net score was 71 - this was won by Lionel Lester. Well done to all of these prize winners. Thank you to our Christmas Elf, Wendy, who

Dec Jacket Winner Lionel Lester $10 each for food afterwards - this is the only way we can guarantee the bar will be open so we can all enjoy a cold beer. We did this last time and the caterer put on a lovely spread. 17 March is the Whangaparaoa Rum for Fun tournament and 21 April will be our memorial colour tournament at South Head. served (and still do serve) in war and conflict. It promises to be an entertaining and enjoyable November Jacket winner day. Debbie Wylde We know that this year, as in the past years, our monthly meetings will be great opportunities for our members to come together to have a chat with friends, to be entertained with a variety of speakers and musical talent, and to enjoy a lovely afternoon tea. Hopefully you can all come to the February meeting. Jennie Champion Secretary Page 10

Fishing Club There are two trips to report on- with the first being on Monday 27 November – too late for the December newsletter. The weather leading up to the trip had been blustery but had died down just enough to enable us to get out on the water. The skipper motored through the Tiri channel then headed towards Little Barrier. On the 40-metre line a couple of miles southeast of Flat Rock there was plenty of sign on the fish finder, so we anchored up. From the first drop the snapper were “on the bite” and the fish were coming on board thick and fast in excellent condition. There was one hook up of a Kingfish but unfortunately some people did not get their lines up quickly enough (or left them down) and the Kingi was lost when it crossed over one of the other lines. We had an early lunch as our quota of seven Snapper was reached before midday. David Aickin continued his good form with a 5.85Kg taking over the Snapper leader board. Aggie’s granddaughter Kenja (who at short notice came along as one of our members

Fortunately for those on the trip, once clear of the land they had just cloud with no rain or wind. The fishing started off slow but as the day progressed some very nice Snapper came on board including a 6.33Kg caught by Gerlad Bester who now takes first place on the leader board. Graham McCallum had a good day landing a respectable Kingfish and others caught Trevally, Kahawai, and Gurnard – along with a few birds that got caught in lines while trying to steal bait. All were freed without harm. Another good day out on the briny with all coming home with a full quota. Last Post It is with sadness that I report the death of Dave Wadman on Wednesday 13 December. Dave had been the previous Club Captain until a stroke some three and a half years ago and will be remembered fondly by those members who knew him. He has experienced quite a few health challenges since then. I was fortunate enough to have run into Dave and Lorraine just a couple of weeks ago.

had pulled out with Covid) had a great day securing some very nice Snapper in the 2-3Kg range. The trip on 4 December was a replacement for a cancelled earlier booking. The day dawned overcast and drizzly and was like that all day.

I attended the funeral on behalf of the Fishing Section and had the honour of reading the Ode after the playing of the last post. Your committee has expressed the Club’s sympathy to Lorraine and family. John Perris
