You may well be wondering what is going on with our Future Sub-Committee, formed after the EGM held February this year. I was wondering too so brought up the subject at our last Executive Committee Meeting (ECM).
I am sorry about this delay. Submissions closed as of the end of March. It is now May, the month I suggested suitable for the next Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) to present our recommendations.
Alas, it was not to be. At the 29 April ECM Vice President Bevan Edwards said more time is needed by the sub-committee to evaluate the submissions before they are presented to the executive committee and a date for the EGM set. The committee agreed to the request given the importance in getting it right for our future.
Whatever we do as a result of the Future SubCommittee recommendations - stay, sell and go in two to three years or sell and amalgamate in two to three years, the final outcome must be that we need to get very much closer to making an actual annual profit.
For example, if members choose to endorse your EGM majority vote to stay and, say, we have $1 million left on deposit at five percent we can afford to lose only $50,000 in a year to maintain our reserve and equity in what remains of our land. This is a far cry from the current $150-$350K a year losses we are running up and have been for 14 or more years.
I hope the Future Sub-Committee has realistic plans to show us how we can do that.
We simply cannot expect to continue as we are, making a loss every year. You need to give serious thought to the other options evaluated by our Future Sub-Committee when it finally presents its report.
As I have reported to you all for months, if we don’t start to make a profit, we will eventually exhaust all our bank held reserves. Then basically “no more Hibiscus Coast RSA” and the sellup proceeds, if any, go to Wellington’s RNZRSA’s coffers.
We must start to make profit or at least pay our way without eroding our reserves. Think of it like this - if you personally overspend then it must come from somewhere - like out of your bank account if you have those funds available.
I repeat again, the club has not made an
operating annual profit for over 14 years; this says to all thinking members that we are slowly but inevitably heading towards insolvency. I don’t want that to happen. Currently we have a chance to survive if we make the right choices. We need a huge shake up to survive. This means more customers during our opening hours, which means more money across our bar and restaurant. Whether or not you like it, we are running a business and costs cannot be trimmed much more, other than possibly closing more, then less overheads like wages.
But rates, insurance and other fixed costs and maintenance still accrue. We have already paid heavily for ignoring maintenance of our property for what one long-serving committee member describes as nothing spent for maintenance for more than 10 years.
The committee grasped the matter when I became president and we embarked on essential repairs for crumbling and dilapidated old buildings that presented a danger to our members health and safety. Our roof leaked, we had to improve ventilation to gain a fully compliant building Warrant of Fitness, kitchen required a food licence which included spending on improvements, etc. It was not cheap but we now enjoy a pleasantly decorated, eminently usable, safe and compliant club for members
to enjoy.
Please remember, nothing from Poppy Day and activities around Anzac Day goes into running the RSA on a day-to-day basis. We have a couple of special funds for our Returned and Ex-Service members and have never failed to provide support and funding for their entitlements and, hopefully, never will.
On the housekeeping front and to those of you noticing bar prices increasing slightly. Unfortunately this is due to the cost of product coming in from our suppliers. We must re-coup
these increases. If we don’t, this just adds to our annual losses.
And remember we have an Annual General Meeting occurring in September 2024, when you as members can have a further say as to the make-up of your new committee to carry this all forward. Even consider standing please, we need fresh input and ideas. Returned & Exservice or Associate members, we all have the same rights under our constitution.
