The latest news on future planning Update from President David Newman
In the monthly newsletter published 6 February 2024, I stated ‘the committee’ had made the decision to break the $200,000 investment in December 2023.” This was incorrect, as it was the “Finance Subcommittee” who made this decision, based on the need to pay staff and other bills over the Christmas and early New Year period. The Finance Sub-Committee is made up of myself and one of the 2 VicePresidents, and another committee member. Myself and the two Vice-Presidents are “the officers” of the club as per Constitution. The Executive Committee (Ex Cmttee) were informed of the decision, after it had been actioned. Apologies about that error, in reporting to you.
I do hope all members are giving the outcomes of the EGM dated 25 Feb 2024, some serious thought. These were; to Stay, Sell or Amalgamate. Stay received just over 100 votes and the other two were close behind, so a spread vote. The reason behind that Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) was to ensure involvement by you the members, in our future. The bottom line is that if we don’t start making an annual profit soon, we shall not have enough cash in the bank to cover these annual losses. We estimate five to eight years left; then what? So we must get to a profit making state, if we are to survive. You the membership, shall decide our future at the next EGM, due ‘within three months’ of the last one on 25 February 2024, so May 2024; date to be confirmed. My opinion concerning our future, is that we need to make a profit, or at least break even each and every, financial year. This could mean radical changes, of how we do things, and opening hours, or can mean us moving to a more visible location. Again, it is you the membership that shall have that say at the next Extraordinary General Meeting.
Remember anyone can visit an RSA, but liquor licensing laws require ‘non-members’ to sign in. We have our annual general meeting looming again in September 2024. If any of you members wish to be a part of the future of this RSA, then please consider standing. ‘Associate’ and ‘Full’ members can stand for Executive Committee. Both forms of membership have the same rights democratically under our Constitution (or Rules), as they are referred to on our website. They are there for all to view.
Currently we only have one ‘Full” member on our committee, the rest of us are all ‘Associates’. So please consider standing. With the development continuing next door, work is going to occur very soon to directional bore a new power supply duct line under and to one side, of our ROW. This work shall occur on a Monday and be completed on the Tuesday morning. It should not cause any major interruption to our trading hours. The developer Melia Developments Ltd purchased an access right over our ROW when they purchased part of our land. This permits them to do this.
Thank you again to the Wednesday Gardening group and others, for their work around our RSA, tiding, sweeping, painting, and for cutting back the vegetation adjacent to our large deck beside the Function Room. Without this sort of volunteer support, we would be facing huge labour costs, to manage our site. Our building now looks nice and white, having been repainted recently. This work is not quite finished as yet. Paint having been donated, mostly by Bunnings, a committee member, and Dulux, for our roof. We did not get all the required quantity of paint for the roof from Dulux, so need to fund about 30% of it ourselves.
We have had some successful entertainment nights at the beginning of March with ‘Gerry Lee and Toucan with Marian Burns’. And our Market Day on 6 April is coming. Raffle night Wednesdays, what a great feeling in the club; it is being used which is what we need to see.
