Laying out the options for the future Update from President David Newman

The comprehensive report on the options for the club’s future goes to the Executive Committee this week. It is up for discussion at the 24 June monthly meeting.

The intention then is to distribute the report with committee refinements, if any, to all members as soon as practicable after the meeting.

The sub-committee of volunteers from the Executive Committee - VPs Bevan and Kay Chilman and committee member David Dryden – first called for input from members. The project was demanding and they deserve our grateful thanks for their efforts.

I am hoping that out of those discussions at the upcoming Executive Committee meeting, we will be able to set a date for an Extra Ordinary General Meeting (EGM) and let you know just as soon as we know.

Not everybody will agree with the options, of course, or may have yet more ideas which they did not submit earlier. No one has a monopoly on good ideas.

Members will have the opportunity at an EGM to suggest changes, additions or deletions. This is not a “first past the post wins” vote, more a guide for your committee to refine and come back to you with some definitive ways forward, dismissing those which have no support and planning around those options that have garnered substantial interest.

Many I have talked to believe that they elected the committee to manage the club and “why don’t you just get on with job” instead of asking us to give up a couple of hours on a Sunday to tell them what we think of the notion.

Normally, I would agree but this is an important turning point for the club and will determine the path for what, we hope, is decades to come. We absolutely need as many members as we can to participate in the development of our community club while recognising the contributions of those who fought for our democracy and often gave their lives for its preservation.

To not participate in planning the future they have battled for is not an acceptable option. Please mark your calendar when the announcement of a date comes out. Attend if you possibly can.

If you have mobility issues but still would like to attend, call the club to see if we can put on free transport for you.

The aim is to try to ensure that we have a future that is making us sustainable and an operation that is paying its way forward. I know it is a very tired mantra from me but we cannot continue to make annual trading losses and survive.

It is predicted that all our bank held reserve funds will be used up within 5-8 years if we don’t start some positive and forward-thinking action in the next few months.

Currently we have huge areas of under-utilised space, a lot of rarely used space and assets that are there but are not returning enough profit to sustain our future.

Our gambling machines could be classed as ‘underutilised’. They cost a lot each to buy, have high overheads and huge legal licensing costs, for a very small return. Even our pool and snooker tables are under used, as is our function room.

In my mind we should be downsizing to cater for say a membership around 1000 and 2000. Even with now 1300 odd members, our building is underused.

On the positive side, I must admit that on Wednesday Night (Club Night) we are seeing a slowly increasing attendance. Not quite at pre-

Covid levels, but heading that way.

And yes, I do have an opinion on what I think we should do, but that is not for public consumption. Like you, I am just one vote.

The future, though, may well mean moving. We are located in the middle of a residential area, down an out-of-sight driveway. There is little opportunity to tempt passing traffic into giving our club a shot.

Whatever we do, we need a far more visible appearance to our community. Club manager Vini is underway with plans to make our presence felt with promotion through local

media, posters for event centres, schools and even a fledgling programme for letter box drop. Give her a call if you can spread the word in your street.

We essentially are running a business with charitable and non for profit aims. Visibility helps with making enough surplus to support and further develop our charitable and community aims.

I can think of a number of options in our future that fit this ideal. Read the report and get ready to give a hand in shaping the club’s future.

Welfare

Do you have mobility issues or have a Gold Card and are needing a little assistance in getting to and from medical appointments on the Peninsula, Orewa, Hatfields, Silverdale or Millwater?

We may be able to help you no matter what type of member you are.

We offer a driving service to take our members to and from health appointments when members are unable to assist themselves, for any reason.

No distance is too small.
