Have your say about the future of your club Update from President David Newman

Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is a little under nine weeks away. Put away a couple of hours Sunday morning 15 September, grab a cup of tea or coffee at the club, and act on the options open to us for a bright future.

Mark your calendar now Annual General Meeting 10am Sunday 15 September

This year your attendance is vital. Not only do we have a new committee to elect, but also you shall be asked to vote on suggestions for the future of our RSA.

In other words, how do we change a non-profitmaking situation into a sustainable business. We cannot just hope to survive if we continue to make losses annually and pay for it from cash reserves. That is an undeniably silly situation. Whatever options you ask the new committee to investigate, the plan must have the capability to eventually make a profit. None of us want to see the demise of the club in less than a decade. In fact, quite the opposite; we want to see our RSA as a vital part of our local community and earning enough to help our veterans with at least health costs and hopefully a lot more to support their quality of life.

Very soon you will get by email a copy of the Future Sub-Committee Report which has looked at all the suggestions given by you, the members. The report gives indications as to ‘we should pursue’, or ‘not to proceed’, for each and every one.

Before the AGM you will receive a list of the proposed options from the Executive Committee for the future of the RSA. At the AGM you be asked to cast your vote for the future.

As I am not standing in the coming election, I cannot, nor want to, influence which way things may be handled after September 2024. As the “immediate past President” on the Executive Committee as of right, I will have a voice but no vote, as per our constitution.

With regard to the member’s draw on 10 July, where the same name was drawn as the previous week (3 July, we have undertaken an

investigation of the member’s draw system and processes. The results of this investigation will be communicated to the membership by the management team this week.

Get along this Wednesday to get another chance at the big prize.

We held our second Meet & Greet new members’ last Friday. What a wonderful friendly environment created by our staff and supported by the Executive Committee, to welcome newcomers.

Back in 2021 as we crawled out of the very difficult Covid times, we only had about 900 odd members for some years. As at 30 June 2024, that number has grown now to 1438 members. That is more than a 50 percent increase in membership. Again, I think, due to a very focused and helpful staff supporting and managing our facilities under solid guidance from General Manager Vini.

You will have noticed that our right-of-way has been tidied up again by Melia Developments, the owners of the land we sold. I can see this impacting on us for two or three years more.

Take care and stay warm and dry – no better place than the club to do that, with some good company thrown in.

IMPORTANT NOTICE - Member’s Draw Audit - July 2024

As many of those who attend our weekly raffle night and member’s draw know, we had a bit of an anomaly on 10 July when the same name was drawn as the previous week (3 July). We undertook an investigation into how and why this happened, to ensure the integrity of the randomness of the member’s draw system. The two key outcomes of this is that the member’s draw is operating correctly and there are much fewer eligible members due to the rollover of the financial year as of 1 July.

What we did find was that the change of financial year caused the membership draw parameters to be reset and, for a number of reasons, this was not picked up. As a result, not all eligible members were included in the draw. We are also unable to verify whether this affected the draw on 3 July as well, or whether it was isolated to 10 July.

To rectify this situation, we have decided to perform three membership draws on Wednesday 24 July (next week).

The first draw will be for $900, which is the amount of the jackpot for the draw held on 3 July.

The second draw will be for either $800 or $1,000 depending on the result of the first draw (whether it was claimed or not).

The third draw will be for either $800, $900, or $1,100 depending on the result of the first two draws.

For each draw, the winner will have three minutes to claim their prize.

Only fully paid up members, for the current financial year (1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025) will be eligible for each of these draws.

If your membership has not been renewed, make sure you come along during the week and renew your membership to be included in these draws. Alternatively, you can renew your membership online at https://www. hbcrsa.org.nz/membership/ using the form links below the Subscription prices.
