The Annual General Meeting is looming Update from President David Newman

It is a bit less than four weeks from our Annual General Meeting for 2024 on 15 September and we need you to be there to decide on the options to investigate for the future of the club.

Annual General Meeting

10am

15 September 2024

It is decision and direction time from you, the members.

We want to see as many Returned & Ex Service and Associate members as possible attending this important meeting. It is only a couple of hours on Sunday morning but will influence the direction the club takes to make sure we are around for decades to come.

A good cross section of opinion from you the members and the election of the officers you want to take forward your ideas is very important.

Why not think about doing a bit more and become a direct part of the process. Any financial member may stand for election to our Executive Committee for the coming year.

Our nominations board is slowly seeing names added to it. Nominations close 4pm 23 August 2024.

The more who stand, gives members more options as to who to vote for. In other words, good democracy. Both Returned & Ex Service and Associate members have the same rights under our constitution. We are a community club – it’s in our name.

Returned & Ex Service deservedly get access to welfare support mainly with regards to medical assistance and rides to and from appointments. This is where our Poppy Collection funds get directed exclusively.

I recently attended the Fishing Club Annual General Meeting. And no, the talk was not all about the biggest fish. This group is self-funded and goes out on some fantastic fishing trips by hired boats from Gulf Harbour. Think of joining up.

You have all received the “Future Options Report” released by email at end of July. It is also available in hard copy at reception at

the club rooms. This report lists all submitted options, received after our Extraordinary General Meeting in February 2024, with comment as your Executive Committee see things.

Why is this so important you may ask? The Executive Committee are managing a non-profit organisation but that doesn’t mean we have to lose money to qualify. Non-profit simply means that any surplus goes back into the club to improve its operations and service to members, not to shareholders.

Even charity businesses must make some sort of profit to survive. In other words, pay their own way at least. Our charity business has not paid its own way for at least 14 years, and if we don’t change into a profit-making club or at least break even, we shall die within five to eight years, like many RSA have throughout the country..

So, please read that Future Options Report, and come to your AGM to have your say and give your committee a direction to follow in order to try to secure our future.

The report holds options from staying where we are (with huge changes), to selling up and buying or renting something fit for purpose or amalgamating with another club. Either way, we must start to make a profit, or eventually face the liquidator - then we have no control as an Executive Committee of our club. So let’s keep our RSA operational please. We are seen as a community focused club.

I do need to mention the good work being done by operations led by Vini our club manager, with her very adaptable and welcoming staff. Our job as a committee is to create club policy and provide support to our manager and operations team to make it happen.

Wednesday Raffle nights is very popular, and numbers have been steadily increasing for more than 18 months now.

So much so that, yes, parking is becoming an issue; especially if you arrive late. Can you please give some thought as to where you park your car when all parking spaces are full.

We have to maintain our own grounds with volunteer support and careless parking ruins our gardens and simply creates more work.

Plan to car share, pick up your friends, travel as a group or and get the club bus to pick you all up and drop you off after.

Perhaps this car parking issue is telling us we

At our August meeting we had a talk from two ladies from the Whangaparaoa Library.

It was interesting to hear about the events and facilities that the library offers. They are working hard to promote the library as a community facility.

Some of the Committee have also catered for funerals which are held at the RSA and continue to be very supportive of events held at the RSA.

Our next meeting will be on 3 September from 12 noon. We will be entertained by the Rick Roff trio and this promises to be a very enjoyable afternoon. There will of course also be raffles, the sales table and a delicious afternoon tea.

We would also like to remind members that we need donations for our trading table which is held every month. We would welcome household items that are in good clean condition and are no longer required. Items such as jigsaws, games, knitting patterns, baking, jam or pickles would also be appreciated.

A reminder also that it is now time to pay your yearly membership fee as these expired at the end of June.

need to move; I don’t know.

We have just had another New Members night last Friday. As of 30 June 2024 we had 1438 financial members, up from around the 900 figure just a few short years ago.

It is a testament to the substantial money we have had to invest to get our club looking attractive and appealing, offering a wider range of activities and, most importantly, to make sure we are compliant with health and safety regulations supported by a staff who are well trained to provide a safe venue for all members to enjoy.

Let’s keep the ball rolling. Please let us see you at our AGM 10am 15 September 2024 kicking off at 10am. Remember please to bring your membership card -- the doors are locked at 10am sharp to ensure that only qualified members attend so please don’t be late.

Due to rising inflation and increased costs across our bar, we have had to raise our happy hour drink prices

While we have avoided increasing these prices for the past 4 years, the current pricing now reflects over a 50% discount compared to our regular menu prices.

We apologize for this necessary adjustment, but hope you'll continue to enjoy our happy hour specials (adustments from 50c to $1 00
