Dear Friends, Colours of Ostrava has reached the age of 18 this year. I thank the whole team, without whose support and intensive work the festival would not be as it is, and I believe that you will celebrate its adulthood together with us: magnificently and with many wonderful experiences. Let‘s stop time together for four days, and create a space for a new and deeper experience of music. Allow yourself to be influenced by the productions of your favourite bands as well as those that still await discovery. You may find new friends, you may discover ideas that will open up new opportunities in your life, or you may experience your own powerful new story. The festival is one great opportunity for change; an opportunity to find comfort in discomfort, or an opportunity to let time flow throughout the cumulating musical testimonies. All the artists from all over the world that you will see at Colours are wearing their hearts on their sleeves in their music and striving for maximum sincerity. So I believe that you, the volunteers in this time-stopping experience, will also find a creative shift in your personal story so that the world becomes only a place of amazement and kindness for you. This is assisted by the beauty experienced in music among other things …

Tomáš Salomon

CEO of Česká spořitelna

Zlata Holušová

director of Colours of Ostrava festival

Dear Friends, Our partnership with Colours of Ostrava has been a source of great fun for many years. Each year of the festival is full of energy and unique experiences, and for three years it has also included the fantastic discussion platform Meltingpot, offering the opportunity to meet people whose life story, attitude or success can be an inspiration to others. And so I’m very delighted that our George Zone has this year become the official stage for this exclusive forum. At Česká spořitelna, we rely on innovation, particularly in technology. That’s why the list of speakers in our zone includes Lubo Smid, Petr Dvořák and Andrea Hurychová, a guru of technology, APIs and the digital world. I’m looking forward to seeing you, either at the stage or during a discussion at Meltingpot – perhaps in our George Zone. I wish you many inspiring experiences worth sharing :-)

Dear Visitors to the Festival,

Dear Visitors to Colours

It is already a tradition for ArcelorMittal Ostrava to be the general partner of one of the most important festivals in Europe, the Colours of Ostrava. The reason why we support the festival is that we want to help the organizers create a truly high-quality programme and bring to this region world-class artists who attract thousands of visitors from all around the world, bringing fame to this city and the region. We are at home here and we care about the standard of living of the local people and the image of the region. This year again, our partnership will not be limited to financial support of the festival. In our charity Dance for Life tent we will be dancing to support a good cause for already 10th time. We will donate the money you will win through dancing to non-profit projects in this region. In this way we have supported 33 organizations together, among which we have distributed a total of 3.5 million crowns since 2010. Thus, at Colours you will gain not only plentiful music experiences but also have an opportunity to take away a good feeling from helping others! However, there will be one change after all! With the new owner we will soon be acting under the brand of Liberty.

I would like to welcome you to Ostrava and to a festival that has come of age this year. Even after so many years, Colours of Ostrava has not fallen into a rut and ranks among the largest and most appreciated of European music festivals. For many of us, Colours is a regular part of the cultural calendar. Four days of a varied feast await us: music, theatre, films, talks and workshops. Big thanks are due to the organisers who managed to interconnect music with the Meltingpot discussion forum and gave the festival a new dimension. Personally, I look forward to the discussions where visitors will get a unique opportunity to meet a great number of world-class speakers sharing their inner world, their personal stories, experiences and thoughts. I believe that it will be highly inspiring and rewarding for many of us. Moreover, all this will take place in the industrial facilities of Dolní Vítkovice. The amazing symbiosis of a festival and the area of Dolní Vítkovice is quite unique. Perhaps no other festival in the world can offer a more remarkable environment. Ostrava can well be proud to host such a popular event attended by people from all over the country, and actually from all over the world. I believe that Ostrava will open its arms to you and you will leave the festival enriched by gorgeous experiences, having spent moments with your friends that will stay with you for a lifetime. I am convinced that you will find that not only Colours is full of colours, but also the city itself, which has left behind its grey reputation and become a city full of greenery that will pleasantly surprise you.

Lovely Colours to all of you!

Ashok Patil CEO

Tomáš Macura Mayor of the City of Ostrava

Dear Visitors to Colours of Ostrava, I do not know if this is your first time at Colours or if the colour-flooded Dolní Vítkovice is a well-known location for you. In any case, I hope you will fully enjoy the atmosphere here. It is always impressive when the whole area fills with people. And that is doubly true in the case of Colours of Ostrava. Or rather triply. The power of this industrial environment is monumental – further boosted by high-quality music, amazing performers and you, the dancing visitors glowing with positive energy. This is a combination that is unparalleled in Europe. Today, Dolní Vítkovice is known not only for its historical buildings in their new outfits such as the Gong and Bolt Tower, but also for the Science Centre, the creative district of Hlubina and the Milan Dobeš Museum, a unique gallery of the optical and kinetic arts. Yet the originator of many buildings and reconstructions in Dolní Vítkovice, the architect Josef Pleskot says that the most valuable in Dolní Vítkovice is what most of us perceive as being obvious – pavements, squares, passages, connections to the Vítkovice district and to the centre of Ostrava. Maybe it is the right time for you to notice that this is the case. It is the seemingly most ordinary that gives life to the campus. Dolní Vítkovice is a tribute to industrial history but it is not a devitalised beauty. It is not empty backdrops with exhibits that must not be touched. It is interactive and full of life, which is an amazing thing, considering its nearly 200 years of history. The connection of Dolní Vítkovice and Colours of Ostrava has proven to be a good choice. It is appreciated by both artists and visitors. It also pleases those of us who were standing in the empty and rather gloomy campus back in 2003, looking for a vision to change and fill it. Today, this campus is the most visited non-Prague monument in the Czech Republic frequented not only by tourists but also by students and school pupils. They learn to understand nature and human discoveries, finding their relationship to the technology. It is a huge bonus and the main mission that Dolní Vítkovice has. But you came mainly to have fun. Colours of Ostrava is like a trademark that guarantees quality in this respect. Even this year, the busy programme will undoubtedly provide you with sufficient impulses, regardless of your musical taste. In my opinion diversity and tolerance of differences moves our civilisation forward. So break away from the everyday reality, enjoy and be inspired by all the colours of Ostrava. May this year‘s Colours of Ostrava be a great experience for you!

Jan Světlík Chairman of the Supervisory Board and CEO of CYLINDERS HOLDING a.s.

BANDS 47SOUL (PALESTINE) The most radical version of the Arab electronic underground. Though the quartet of rappers and musicians comes from the Palestine Dia18/7 spora, they hold different passports: El Far3i 23.00‒00.00 and El Jehaz from Jordan, Sbeit from Israel and gloTM FRESH stage Z the People an American one. They solved visa problems by living in London where they also released their long-range debut album Balfron Promise – a hard and brave stamp on the ground as in the Dabke wedding dance, which is not only a social event in the Levant but also a symbol of Palestinian identity expressed in the new genre of shamstep. The cosmopolitan mixture of hip hop, aggressive western electronics, dub reggae and Arabian dabke, thoughtfully uses the sound of the mijwez flute, traditional drums and sharpened guitars. The truly explosive and globally successful album does not focus solely on the Arab communities (many songs are partly sung in English) and does not escalate the Palestine-Israeli conflict. The non-simplified musical message of overcoming geographical and cultural frontiers regularly mentions the word peace, which is no longer profane but topical due to current world events: the lyrics encourage debate rather than rupture.

AGENTS OF TIME LIVE (FRANCE) Dancers from space: Andrea Di Ceglie, Fedele Ladisa and Luigi Tutolo. An energy-filled trio that determines time: its run towards the future and the moments when it freezes. They love old analogue mixing consoles, making their live sets perfectly unpredictable experiences. Usu19/7 ally you feel as if in a sonic race for life – da21.00‒22.30 shing forward and in your nosedive you can hear YouTube Music the fusion of progressive techno and ambient stage moods. There is both aggression and absolute relaxation in all this. Final notice: It is not recommended to check your phone or watch during a live show of Agents of Time. Let timelessness rule.

AMBER RUN (GREAT BRITAIN)

20/7

19.00‒20.00 gloTM FRESH stage

An indie-rock band reminiscent of the connecting link between Coldplay, Royal Blood and Alt-J. They do not run away from the mainstream, they are not afraid of pop, but they work with their greatest trumps: emotionally strong songs, sincere and somewhat sad lyrics, commitment at concerts and excellent video clips. No wonder the hit I Found has attracted over fifty million views, and it is not the only one. Others like Fickle Game or Pilot have also enjoyed enormous interest.

BCUC (SOUTH AFRICA) A tidal wave of afro-psychedelics, soul, punk, funk and social anger. If you side with reality and do not want to allow anything like that, you will check anyway that you are still on Earth after the singer‘s first hoarse scream and the band‘s fierce rhythmic attack. This does not necessarily mean 18/7 that the BCUC will totally get you, but given the 21.30‒22.30 circumstances, it will probably happen, no matter Drive stage what music you usually listen to. Bantu Continua by MINI Uhuru Consciousness aka BCUC is considered one of the most remarkable musical projects of recent years from Soweto, a suburb of Johannesburg. The seven-member line-up, featuring drummers, a female vocalist and a bass player, is led by the singer and rapper Jovi Nkosi. Their mixture of afro-psychedelics, soul, funky, hip-hop, punk, blues, South African traditional vocal and rhythmic styles, and the desire to sound like a loud rock band has the energy of a tidal wave. And if you need a more detailed description, imagine Fela Kuti multiplied by James Brown and by the Ladysmith Black Mambazo male choir.

BO NINGEN (JAPAN) 20/7

00.00‒01.00 Full Moon stage

Lovers of improvised noise, long jamming, traditional Japanese arts and multimedia. Through inordinate noise sessions, the four Japanese set off towards both hard rock and psychedelia, always accompanied by a lack of restraint and seeming randomness. Bo Ningen have recorded

DON’T DRY OUT! COME ENJOY OUR RADEGAST RYZE HOŘKA 12 TAPPED TO GLASS IN OUR RADEGAST PUB DID YOU KNOW THAT RADEGAST BELONGS TO THE MOST WATER SAVING BREWERIES IN THE WORLD? TO MAKE HALF LITER OF RADEGAST, WE ONLY NEED 1,26 LITERS OF WATER!

three albums and collaborated with Savages, for example, but they are famous mainly for their concerts, able to incite uncontrolled enthusiasm even in outsiders and bring them to the verge of madness. The dark horse of the festival.

CABRUÊRA (BRAZIL) Rhythmically insidious psychedelic samba for sleepless nights. Despite having been around for twenty years they still remind us of a flock of skittish goats that even the smartest watchdogs have no chance of controlling. Translated into music: a legendary band from northeast 18/7 Brazil, whose name truly translates as ‘flock of 19.00‒20.00 goats’. They do not step back from their explosDrive stage ive mix of mangue beat, baiao, forró, samba, by MINI psychedelic rock, funky, ska and hip hop. The bandleader Arthur Pessoa scrubs the guitar strings with a ballpoint pen to achieve a unique cello or berimbau sound, but only in those moments when Cabruêra holds itself down to earth. There is no time for such playful acts during the explosions, when it is rather advisable to look for the emergency exit.

CALYPSO ROSE (TOBAGO/USA) An ageless, world-famous and totally sensational calypso queen. Literally a living legend of the popular Caribbean style and the first woman in history to break through its male hegemony. Later on she boldly opened herself to many other influences. She has won dozens of compe19/7 titions, has become a carnival star at home and 21.00‒21.00 in neighbouring countries and has collaborated Drive stage by MINI with such icons as Bob Marley, Manu Chao, Michael Jackson and Miriam Makeba. Despite her age of nearly eighty, she has audiences literally eating out of her hand, won over by her indomitable energy and vocal vitality. She has lived in New York since the 1980s, which gives her an overview of Afro-Caribbean and calypso musical innovation. The determination, energy and rhythm are very much supported by the excellent Kobo Town band led by Drew Gonzalves, an apostle of the modern calypso revival, with whom she has introduced flavours of reggae, ska, soca and punta rock from Belize into calypso .

CORY HENRY & THE FUNK APOSTLES (USA) A jazz organist, singer, holder of three Grammies and a member of Snarky Puppy, and his explosive band will let everybody know what it means to have a backpack of ideas during a concert. He is said to be the Billy Preston of his generation because of his versatility and ability to play the Ha20/7 mmond B-3 organ as only a few others can. He 20.00‒21.00 ArcelorMittal learned to play in church in early childhood, admistage ring Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea and James Brown, the music he is closest to even today. The overpressure of his own ideas eventually led him to forming his own band, The Funk Apostles, with which they resemble a well-established party that Henry enjoys both singing and improvising with. And improvising sounds like something the band must have been born with.

DAKH DAUGHTERS (THE UKRAINE) Freak cabaret with a punk stance baptised by the Maidan. “Our main message is peace and love“ insist the seven actresses with white-painted faces and blood-red lips. These members of the DAKH avant-garde Kiev theatre play many instruments, sing, scream, cry, dance and use the very 18/7 edge of emotions to create a freakish cabaret in 00.00‒01.00 which laughter turns into a grotesque grin and Cylinders absurd farce into an angry gritting of teeth. They Gong stage work with music as if with fire: they almost quench it only to power it back by vigorous blowing and leave it to grow into a glowing, sense-absorbing bonfire, which is partly rooted in the ethno-chaos of Dakha Brakha – a related band of DAKH colleagues – and in Vlad Troitsky‘s hatchery, today the ideological leader of the Dakh Daughters. In addition to Ukrainian folk songs, they cover the lyrics of Taras Shevchenko, Charles Bukowski and Serhiy Zhadan.

DAVID AUGUST (GERMANY) A sonic treasure hunter with whom you will feel like travellers through cosmic infinity. “Creating music, that is, the act of creation in general should be free from any rationalisation. At best, it should be a reflection of subconscious communication“ says the classically-trained experimenter on the Berlin-Hamburg route. He mixes sensitive techno with jazz solos, letting dance euphoria break out and acting as a scriptwriter of rhythmic turns throu-

ghout the performance. “To find the courage to start a dialogue with myself is a tremendous challenge for me“ says the 29-year-old August, on the subject of authorial self-search. His live show at Colours 2019 may feel like a manifesto for new forms of electronic music.

ELISAPIE (CANADA) A singer, songwriter, film maker and activist from the northernmost Canadian territory of Nunavut, historical home of the Inuit nation. The large open spaces, the sky, the earth and the ocean, which are said to make you feel extremely small but happy, have shaped the moody contours of Elisapie Isaac‘s music: a dream pop transiting into folk through the sieve of Inuit traditions. This holder of a Juno, the highest Canadian music award, has characterised her latest album, The Ballad of the Runaway Girl, as “an inner conflict between a sensitive woman and a beast full of instincts“.

One of the stars of the British electro-underground, with her own BBC radio show. She is a trustee of many festivals and regularly raves at Glastonbury. Last year she was the star of the DJ scene at WOMEX. It is said that if there is someone holding a finger on the erratic pulse of contemporary dance electronic music, it is she. Her sets are like explosive music labs. She samples bits and pieces from various tracks, strange sounds and even interviews, and then vibrates your ears with inspirations from punk, hip-hop, dubstep, techno, funk and Afrohouse.

ENRICO SANGIULIANO (ITALY) The Italian Blade Runner, considered a club cult back at home. But do not expect the glowing sun or the beach dunes in connection with his avalanche techno sound. He named his debut album Biomorph and decided to put the evolution of humanity to music in it. From the very first 20/7 song it evokes the dark futurism of Blade 00.30‒02.00 Runner 2049. Sure, the dynamics encourage YouTube Music stage dance, but you subconsciously know that this music is more than that. It has the power to surround you with a film-like atmosphere and apart from emotions to also pump scientific facts into you. “I wanted to create a coherent musical path to new possibilities. Biomorph was born as a conceptual album transcending the classical understanding of music“ is how Enrico summarises his album, the tracks of which remind us of large factual books: Functional Basic Unit Of Life, Multicellular, Cosmic Ratio and New Dawn.

ÉTIENNE DE CRÉCY (DJ SET) (FRANCE) The 1990s would not exist without him and today he is a living legend of the French dance scene. His influence could not be avoided; everyone succumbed. His CV could easily state that he created the ‘French touch‘; a style that blends French positivism and casualness with 17/7 all the oddities of American and European disco 20.30‒22.30 of the 1970s and 1980s. Simply a great morningYouTube Music stage -to-morning party. The rocket-like pace of his beginnings has still not slowed down. His live sets broke free long ago, and no one is likely to ever chain them up again. Once he launches his rave at Colours 2019, get a croissant and leave everything else behind. The moment will be his, but also mainly yours.

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE (GREAT BRITAIN) A singer and composer with strong emotions and a reputation for being one of the world‘s greatest musical personalities, according to many, the clear “Best of the Fest“. An admired performer of bombastic pop with a literally supernatural voice, changing from an angry sc17/7 ream to a victorious fanfare in the finale. Her 22.45‒00.00 four albums are a kind of grand musical stateČeská spořitelna stage ment: “I want my music to sound as if you had thrown yourself off a tree or a tall building. Or like if an ocean pulls you under and you can‘t breathe. It‘s something that completely surrounds, engulfs and fills you. And you either explode or disappear.“ The complete artistic picture of Florence is complemented by self-scrutinising lyrics: a clash of everyday doubts, intimacy, love spleen, and the feeling that happiness is an extremely complicated subject. Songs ranging from wild rock to lyrical piano ballads bear her authorial signature. Since 2007 when the group called Florence + The Machine was created, however, Isabella Summers, a musician and producer, has co-authored most of her hits. Florence accepted the two Brit Awards and expected the results of the multiple Mercury Prize and Grammy nominations also on her behalf. She won the NME Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards. Her music fits perfectly into successful TV series; Tim Burton used Wish You Were Here for the film Miss Peregrine‘s Home for Peculiar Children.

GANG OF YOUTHS (AUSTRALIA) The Australian rock band of 2017. Quadruple winners of the ARIA Awards, including the Best Album and Best Band categories. Rolling Stone magazine called their Go Farther In Lightness album “the work of five youngsters living their dream of being the next U2“. What they heard in the Gang of 20/7 Youths’ music was “a mixture of Springsteen, The 17.30‒18.30 National, LCD Soundsystem as well as glimpses of ArcelorMittal stage Arcade Fire, War on Drugs and U2.“ A powerful mixture of guitars, booming drums, keyboards and strings headed by David Le‘aupepe‘s raw voice lead us turbulently into the centre of the painful contemplation of a wandering heart, loneliness, anxiety, and certainty that what happened to us once will come again. Another thing that makes Gang of Youths remarkable is how they managed to transfer their music, and lyrics oscillating between heaven and hell, to giant Australian stadiums, where their sense of epic rock ballads stands out best.

GLASS MUSEUM (BELGIUM) Music between jazz, minimalism, pop, rock and electronics, opening up space for the imagination. Drummer Martin Grégoire and pianist Antoine Flipo prefer the experiences of live concerts. They believe that live performances best allow the core of their musical work to come to the surface: the tension between rhythmic ferocity and romantic passages. This duo draws the audience into a colourful landscape and walks through it, passing time along paths marked by such famous names as Gogo Penguin, Nils Frahm, Yann Tiersen or Phil Glass.

The Holy Motors got together in Tallinn at the end of 2012, the band features the relaxed voice of Eliann Tulve and the dreamy atmosphere of their songs. The ‘Slow Sundown’ album reminds us of a night ride through a deserted landscape; topics as uprooting, loneliness or melancholy follow by themselves. The magical mood and cinematic western motifs are multiplied by the powerful sound of three guitars, distorted by lots of effects and reverb. The band borrowed its name from the title of Leos Carax‘s cult film. A touching midnight soirée.

CHARLIE CUNNINGHAM (GREAT BRITAIN)

A London songwriter blessed with a charming voice preferring fragile, slowly blooming songs and renowned for its original percussive guitar sound learned from local flamenco masters during his stay in Seville. He does not give much to humour and rather reveals the darker aspects of his lyrical inspirations: he looks into the cracks of life in a relaxed, almost pastoral way and assures us that the miracle of waiting for love and hope does exist.

JOHN BUTLER TRIO (AUSTRALIA) The most successful independent Australian musician of all time, despite starting as a busker in the street and having to work hard to achieve well-deserved worldwide success without succumbing to the crowds and the mighty. This songwriter, excellent guitarist and singer consi19/7 ders songs to be like horses that need to be cau19.45‒20.45 Česká spořitelna ght without killing their free soul. This is the stage creed that has been in place for his entire musical career. He is a great singer and as a guitarist he is literally a pearl: he swaps his 11-string acoustic guitar with an electric or resophonic one, a banjo for a dobro – and plays them in a unique style that includes picking and open tuning. His trio‘s dynamite music has always oscillated between straightforward rock, blues, funky, melodic folk, bluegrass and reggae. And it is not at all difficult to give in to it, although it has recently been supplemented by fine electronics and the trio has been extended by a keyboardist and a singing percussionist. This charismatic philanthropist and his wife Danielle Caruana, aka singer-songwriter Mama Kin, have established and funded The Seed Fund, supporting young emerging artists, and he is one of Australia‘s leading environmental activists.

JUNGLE BY NIGHT (THE NETHERLANDS) An explosive nine-member band inspired by Afrobeat and praised by its co-founder, the drummer Tony Allen. KRONOS QUARTET (USA) For almost fifty years, the world‘s most famous string quartet has been breaking down the expectations commonly attributed to such ensembles, i.e. playing classical music in suits and being alien to listeners of contemporary modern music who expect a more adventurous and 19/7 less uptight approach. The Kronos Quartet has 21.00‒22.00 radically reassessed the perception of “great ArcelorMittal stage art from concert halls“ and has come up with a vision of a quartet as a form of multicultural musical dialogue with incredible breadth: from contemporary classical music through experimental avant-garde, minimalism, folk and rock to world music and their own timeless compositions. And if there has been anyone in the West who broke its self-confident view that music captivating all the senses can come only from its midst, it has to have been the Kronos Quartet, winners of the Grammy and a number of other significant awards. “I have always wanted a lively, energetic and cool string quartet without worrying about being kicked in the ass. Yet it has to be opinionated and tell true musical stories with grace, exaggeration and depth“ said its leader David Harrington, who has not hesitated to work with David Bowie, Laurie Anderson, Björk, Dave Matthews, Paul McCartney, Terry Riley, Arvo Pärt, Astor Piazzolla, Philip Glass, Henryk Górecki and Steve Reich.

LEWIS CAPALDI (GREAT BRITAIN) A twenty-two-year-old Scott who woke up one day to find that his song Bruises had been played by millions of people at Spotify, demanding more. He met the demand and became famous overnight. The classic musical fairy tale culmi18/7 nated in winning the Scottish Music Awards and concerts sold out in a trice. “Lewis Capaldi‘s 18.00‒19.00 Cylinders songs are full of gorgeous and painful grief. Gong stage They are raw melodies that strip the soul of this West Lothian singer and songwriter. They are full of sincere and personal verses. Yet they shine brightly thanks to their versatility and to Lewis‘ powerful and stunning voice.“

LOLA MARSH (ISRAEL) Tel Aviv‘s orchestral-indie-pop-folk, or proof that the Israelis perhaps have a patent for strong pop melodies carried by a special melancholy alternating with romanticism. Not to mention vocalists with emotionally-charged voices capable of bewitching half the world. Yael 18/7 Shoshana Cohen is undoubtedly one of them, 15.45‒16.45 dancing with the grace of Penelope Cruz, who gloTM FRESH stage she so much resembles. Gil Landau, a hit-maker and multi-instrumentalist does not hide how much he utilises the slowly escalating dramatic effect of film soundtracks, pop-rock, and the natural intimacy of folk. For that reason, acoustic guitars have the same role as keyboards and strings in Lola Marsh. Although their music bears all the signs of indie pop, you would not find an interchangeable template in it – the reason obviously being the Israeli origins, a guarantee of otherness.

MANU DELAGO (AUSTRIA) A composer and the world‘s most sought after hang player. His music flows from the head to the fingers tapping the metal drum and beyond towards experiments – always open to further influences and challenges. That is why Björk, Joss Stone, Ólafur Arnalds, the Cinematic Or18/7 chestra and Anoushka Shankar (with whom he 16.30‒17.30 has been nominated for a Grammy for their joint Drive stage by MINI album Land of Gold) take him as an equal partner. The instrument is likened to a sound sculpture – that is when you can‘t decide whether you‘re listening to a harp, Indian tabla drums, African kalimba or a steel pan from Trinidad – has found its place in ambient electronics, contemporary music, nu-jazz and pop. What is important for Delag‘s works is important for the hang: there are no given rules or styles; everything is based on the player‘s interpretation and intuition; there are no handbooks, except for those that he himself once created with unexpected success.

MARIZA (PORTUGAL) The queen of fado. A singer touching your soul with her voice. Reviewers have written of her: “Hundreds of words and all conceivable superlatives have been pronounced over the beauty coming out of her mouth. It defies definitions vague descriptions. In short, Mariza has 18/7 and a soul-touching voice – worldwide, including 19.00‒20.00 places where Portuguese is not understood. ArcelorMittal stage She‘s simply the personification of fado.“ “Fado is our blues; songs filled with pain, sadness, seclusion, longing for love and for the endless sea“ explains Mariza Reis Nunes, or briefly just Mariza, the symbol of modern fado. The traditional concept of fado accompanied by the Portuguese guitar has never been an unbreakable rule for her: she gradually enriched her songs with percussion, flamenco, morna from Cape Verde, Brazilian influences, tasteful pop feels and has not hesitated to approach contemporary authors. Whenever possible, she likes stepping down into the auditorium wanting to be as close as possible to the people. “When I sing, it‘s not just singing; I share my feelings, so I have to look into your eyes to make sure you understand.“

MATHIAS EICK (NORWAY) A trumpeter renowned for his warm lyrical tone, ECM and Nordic jazz – three guarantors of extraordinary experiences. All the more so, as the intimate contemplation of the family brought this player (one of the best in the world) to sing on his last Ravensburg album – without words, but with deep feelings. 20/7 Eick‘s highly melodic music thus gained an even 16.30‒17.30 Cylinders more beautiful contemplative spirit. Since his debut Gong stage Doors, he has been considered a jazz miracle, a composer open to many influences, and a clearly recognisable figure within the Nordic jazz for his atmospheric, but melancholy-avoiding melodies. Even though he plays other instruments he has developed his art in particular with the trumpet: “The trumpet has always been a part of me, like an extended part of my body; this was clear very early on as playing it was so natural for me. The trumpet was the closest thing to my heart.“ He will be accompanied by a band at Colours: bassist Audun Erlien, drummer Torstein Lofthus, pianist Andreas Ulvo and violinist Hakon Aase.

MESAJAH (POLAND)

21.15‒22.30 gloTM FRESH stage

A star of the Polish reggae scene. A singer, songwriter, showman and rastaman calling for tolerance and equality, regardless of origins, religion or political views in his dance music. Manuel Rengifo Diaz, as he was christened (since his father is from Peru), has been faithful to his own version of reggae, dancehall, dub and raggamuffin from the beginning, still as part of the famous Natural Dread Killaz. As a soloist he has recorded several great and very popular albums, and many of his songs are literally sung by the whole of Poland.

MØ (DENMARK) The first lady of the pop revolt – Karen Marie Aagaard Ørsted. She describes her style as a natural mix of electro, indie-pop, soul and the sounds of the street. Although influenced by the global pop mainstream, her expression still shines with punk relaxation, her voice lacks neither sincerity 17/7 nor poisonous punch and her art is dominated by 20.00‒21.00 real emotions and thoughts. “Today, everything Česká spořitelna stage is insanely conservative in political life. It‘s a classic situation where something interesting starts happening to the younger generation, but then the old and the powerful say ‘No, it can‘t be like that!‘ Just look at history, it has happened over and over again. Once youngsters get out of control, politicians make a desperate power move. Fortunately I believe boundlessly in active youth“ says the singer, who called her second album Forever Neverland, pointing out the dangerous desire to stay eternally young and carefree, but ending up completely outside socio-political reality.

MOGWAI (GREAT BRITAIN) A post-rock pleasure for which there is perhaps no comparable alternative. These sonic solitaires from Glasgow have not shown signs of creative attenuation over the years. They can still captivate their audiences with their overyet beautiful and emotionally grada19/7 whelming, ting, art rock, inventive and dynamic music. That 23.45‒00.45 is when they replace the turmoil of guitars, ArcelorMittal electronics and distorted vocals with lyrically stage relaxing silence just before a fatal explosion. “Your ears will bleed, but the majestic music that perhaps only they can play will heal your wounds in a moment“ was once written about one of the most important post-rock bands in history. A band relying largely on instrumental melancholy-coloured compositions, meandering from beauty to chaos. And the new Every Country‘s Sun album has confirmed that Mogwai remain a relevant and current band. In other words, “Mogwai are back. Older, bigger, better, wiser – and not fearing to turn the power of their amplifiers up until they destroy your eardrums and change your view of the world.“

MOONLIGHT BENJAMIN (HAITI/FRANCE) A voodoo priestess with a voice like a volcano and a rolling blues-rock band behind her. And as not everyone might know what that means, imagine the Black Keys, Dr John and Alabama Shakes all together. There are even instructions on how to approach Moonlight Benjamin: play the 17/7 Siltane album at home as loud as you dare. And 21.30‒22.30 if you miss their concert, you will curse yourself. Drive stage To make it clear: voodoo is not a marketing tool by MINI for attracting attention to this exceptionally exciting singer, but a catalyst for artistic resistance. “Voodoo is a way to stay positive. Negativity is a state of mind that hinders you. It creates fear. The positive energy is everywhere and it is us“ says the singer, reminiscent of a meteorite fallen from the sky. The fantastic band literally excites her. The eagerness where her music continues to move can make your head itch, but none of the guesses works. Each song brings something different: wild trance, desert blues, psychedelic, surf or blues chanson. Yet one thing is constant: Moonlight Benjamin and her band will get under your skin like a razor blade.

NAHKO AND MEDICINE FOR THE PEOPLE (USA) A folk-rock-pop recipe for doing good with a vibrant concert on top of it. Nakho Bear would be able find his place on his own with his Apache-Filipino-Puerto Rican origins, a Kerouac-like pilgrim spirit, and the sense of being a citizen in the planet‘s service – as proven by his solo al19/7 bum My Name Is Bear. Yet his addictive songs 17.15‒18.15 explode with intense power, especially in the Česká spořitelna moments when he commands ‘Hoka Hey!‘ like stage Crazy Horse before Little Bighorn and the band Medicine for the People charges with him in a crushing attack. Their rock, folk, pop, hip hop, reggae or Indian pow-wow sound like a heartfelt declaration that we all need each other right now. Since 2008, they have released four albums and won the top prize at the Native American Music Awards for their Hoka. Thanks to their concerts they have become a cult band also enthusiastically received in Europe.

NICOLA CRUZ (ECUADOR) If you ever find yourself in a raging stratovolcano with your earbuds in, be sure to search for his name on Spotify. And you‘ll be fine. A creator of musical moods with rhythms and spontaneity based on Ecuador‘s folk traditions and legends. His carefully compiled analogue sound 17/7 reflects contagious optimism and a desire to 22.30‒00.00 seek, but mainly to combine the history and YouTube Music present of South America’s musical cultures. He stage mixes electronics with the sounds of wooden flutes, percussion and guitars in swirls of (non)traditional influences and inspirations. His latest album presents a synthesis of modern experiment with ancient ritual aiming at a spiritual experience.

ÓLAFUR ARNALDS (ICELAND) Ambient - a Latin word that means environment or surrounding space. That is exactly what the music of this Icelandic multi-instrumentalist creates. As soon as you witness his live set, the universe around you suddenly changes. It expands, looking for new colours, shapes and possibilities. It surrounds you; it can shake you and make you feel the bearable lightness of being.

Arnalds has become a post-modern icon who has time for sensitive string and piano parts as well as devastating guitar discharges. He has been on a musical pilgrimage with Sigur Rós, formed the experimental techno-duo Kiasmos and composed the soundtrack for the British TV crime series 18/7 Broadchurch. He never looks back, always sear21.30‒22.30 ArcelorMittal ching for new melodies, moods and symphonic stage possibilities. A jazz trumpet and flugelhorn player bringing hellish pleasure from divine music, the character of which shows its relationship to his native Sardinia and the Mediterranean. That is where the beautifully romantic, captivating and sunny sound of his instruments comes from as well as the philosophy reflected in the title of his last album recorded with the Devil Quartet: Carpe diem. This Sardinian trumpet player who has recorded and toured with many bands is admired by jazzmen from all over the world. His closest teamma-

te of recent years – Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, who performed at Colours last year – said: “For me, Paolo‘s tone is a mixture of Chet Baker or Miles Davis and a gentle touch of the Mediterranean. Sometimes it is like a little bird, sometimes like an angel guiding me in a unique direction – a quiet voice that you can listen to in your dreams.“ Frescu founded The Devil Quartet in 2004. Together with guitarist Bebo Ferra, bassist Paolino Dalla Porta and drummer Stefano Bagnoli, they have worked their way to a purely acoustic, literally magical sound with which they dazzle their audiences all over the world.

PIERCE BROTHERS (AUSTRALIA) Two brothers, who will blast you with a huge amount of folk-rock energy, are returning with their debut album Atlas Shoulders. Jack and Pat have been previously reported in Australia as giving kick-ass concerts. Soon, not only Ostrava but the whole of Europe and North America had 20/7 realised it, staring incredulously at the vigorous 16.30‒17.30 commitment of these likeable twins. And what is Česká spořitelna the magic of these always good-tempered singers, stage guitarists and drummers? An indie folk-rock sound orbiting on the same path as John Butler, Xavier Rudd and Mumford & Sons, and catchy songs that can easily become addictive.

RAG‘N‘BONE MAN (GREAT BRITAIN) A gospel-blues-soul preacher with a giant voice. The arms of this three-time Brit Awards winner have the words blues and funky tattooed on them. If he had more arms (which might well be possible considering his extra-terrestrial voice) they would also bear gospel, soul, hip-hop, rock and 18/7 pop. Perhaps even country. The tall bearded hefty 20.15‒21.15 man from East Sussex has dealt with this unlikely Česká spořitelna stage combination with a credible sincerity, learned, as he admits, from old American bluesmen, his first great musical role models. Then he added hip-hop shooters to them, and even though the worlds of beats/rap and blues do not have much in common, he has managed to sit them comfortably side-by-side over the past few years. He attracted attention with his album Wolves in 2014. Massive interest, and by that we mean really massive, was generated by two hits: Human and Skin that literally paralysed the world with the emotion and passion with which they were sung. Album Human then became one of the fastest-selling male al-

bums of the decade in the UK, though Graham‘s reflections and lyrics are completely at odds with the ordinary pop stereotype. Though he preaches about himself and about the world, paying tribute to humanism and love, he tells us: “I’m only human, after all. Don’t put your blame on me.“

RED BARAAT (USA) A funky dhol‘n‘brass band from Brooklyn that positively nails it in concerts. “We do not intend to let people leave our concerts with a single dry thread in their clothes“ says the leader and dhol drum player Sunny Jain. This truly pioneering band, whirling with many global influences, 17/7 celebrates diversity and mercilessly fires off an 18.45‒19.45 explosive mixture of Punjabi bhangra, Indian Drive stage by MINI wedding music, hip hop, jazz and Caribbean chutney. They do it the wildest way they can in the most psychedelic songs of their careers. In other words: this is how we have not yet known them. They will introduce their new Sound The People album at Colours, presenting general reflections on migration, increasing nationalism, religious and social diversity, the need for cultural harmony and the loss of identity.

RICHIE HAWTIN CLOSE (CANADA) A techno-intellectual for whom a robot nicknamed Plastikman dances. If he did not shine and perform as a DJ, he would surely be known as an original scientist and inventor. He uses music exclusively as the material of the future. His tracks are like maths that you can even fall in 17/7 love with. His work levitates between genius 21.15‒22.30 and madness, between underground, minimaArcelorMittal stage list techno and a soundtrack for science fiction. The interconnection of arts and technology has become his life’s theme. In 2013, he prepared special performances for the legendary Guggenheim Museum in New York City, in 2006 he contributed with his music to the opening of the Winter Olympics in Turin, and five years later, alongside the British-Indian sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor, he transformed Paris‘ Grand Palais into a gigantic artistic installation. His status as a musical visionary was finally confirmed in 2015 when the University of Hudders-

field awarded him an honorary degree for his outstanding contribution to world culture in music and technology.

ROSALÍA (SPAIN) Flamenco and electro-pop designed for the charts do not belong in one sentence – or not until now. Rosalía Vila Tobella, a 25-year-old singer, songwriter, dancer and producer tore this hypothesis to pieces with the determination of a bullfighter on her 20/7 El Mal Querer album and introduced Andalusia‘s 01.00‒02.00 musical treasures into the modern urban context without prejudice. She thoughtfully put an electroČeská spořitelna stage -pop harness on it and bet on the aesthetics of reggaeton, R&B and hip hop. “I learned everything about the traditions, rules, technology and history. But I take Flamenco as here and now. The classical foundation is important to me, but I want to be free and doing flamenco my own way is absolutely crucial for me. I know it is a great risk but I don‘t have any other option. This is how I feel it.“ All this would be worthless if: the rawness and desire were not equally strong in her expressive voice; she took the flamenco as a mere trick to attract attention; her music did not magnetise from the first moment, and unaffectedness was not her essential asset. Rosalía collaborates with the Venezuelan electro-magician Arca and James Blake, she recorded the hit Brillo together with the reggaeton megastar J. Balvin, provoking a world response like an epidemic. She spent many days at Pharrell Williams studio, Dua Lipa is her fan, and she enjoys the support of electro producer El Guincho, known through Björk, who this new global star thanked for inspiration (alongside Kate Bush) when receiving two Latin Grammy awards.

This singer and songwriter from Northern Ireland‘s Londonderry is no newcomer to the indie scene – he and his Kharma 45 signed a contract with Warner and played at Glastonbury. Yet Glenn Rosborough only experienced a breakthrough as a soloist. His Burn Blue and Fall to Earth singles gained a lot of attention, so this young man, whose voice is a really powerful instrument, went to London to start touring Europe with his own band.

SAM KELLY & THE LOST BOYS (GREAT BRITAIN) A singer with a gift from God and his unleashed folk-rock band. The winner of the BBC Folk Awards is the exact opposite of a settled folk musician from an English club: the grooving band, the soul-coloured voice, dramatically spreading songs and the enjoyment of the festi19/7 val atmosphere create the feeling that they 23.45‒00.45 must have come from the world of rock. The Drive stage by MINI most typical feature of the singer, guitarist and composer Sam Kelly is his well-refined updates of the tradition, which are incompatible with playing it safe. So he has stuff worth listening to, even though it is ballads that are hundreds of years old. And the Lost Boys are not just some kind of a backing band: the sextet of excellent instrumentalists and singers can pour out overwhelming rhythmic arrangements, then play a gentle ballad followed by a sudden acceleration akin to that of a powerful motorcycle.

SAN SALVADOR (FRANCE) Six voices, two drums, twelve hands, a tambourine and one big vocal madness in the style of ‘after us the deluge‘. An absolutely unexpected version of Provencal polyphony on the limits of vocal and physical possibilities, if not beyond. The three male and three female singers are not 19/7 difficult to describe, if you remember Colours 18.30‒19.30 2014 and the vocal group Lo Cor de la Plana Drive stage from Marseille, and have an idea of their musiby MINI cal neologism: Provencal polyphony sung in Occitan, a language associated with medieval troubadours. San Salvador use only one tambourine and achieve riveting, trance-like rhythms with their voices and by pounding on two big drums. They work with totally different harmonic patterns, which they can change in a shocking way many times in a single song. You find it perfectly confusing: each time you feel like they have reached the climax, another one comes… followed by yet another – until you remain absolutely stunned, feeling that someone has just disassembled you.

A new dimension of beatbox and a loopstation. Tristan Coudray – aka SARO – is a fascinating revelation on the music scene. Beatbox reaches unheard dimensions in his performances mixing trap, bass, deep house and electro pop. Despite his immense talent, this winner of the Beatbox Battle World Championship 2017 remains modest and humble. He reigns on the stage on his own, assisted only by his loyal aide - a looper and by the visual part of the show..

SHAKA PONK (FRANCE) An Egyptian woman, five Frenchmen and the giant virtual monkey Goz are coming back. Even crazier than ever (obviously). Anyone who has seen them at Colours knows what awaits them after a manic concert, a crystalline musical 19/7 delirium played to the absolute exhaustion and supported by a fantastic 3D projection: a sleep01.00‒02.00 less night. Or boozing until morning. It depends Česká spořitelna stage on the character. So, welcome again to the crazy world of Shaka Ponk: musicians, animators and graphic designers who have figured out what it sounds like in limbo and have brought it into the world without warning. Supposedly also on the advice of the cunning virtual monkey Mr Goz, a permanent member of the band. “We are not anxious about style and none of us really knows where we belong. Any direction? Nonsense. We like electronics, punk, rock, metal, hip-hop and raga, and we press it into people as Mr Goz tells us, that is until their ears start bleeding“ they say of themselves. Winners of the Victoires de la Musique, the top French music award, and holders of two MTV Europe Music Awards, they remain a French rock sensation even after the release of The Evol‘, which is short for Evolution, but also dangerously close to Evil. Yet it is also an anagram of Love, perhaps the only hope for mankind.

SHILPA RAY (USA)

19/7

22.00‒23.00 Full Moon stage

An energetic American singer with Bengali roots and a husky voice that will tear your heart in half. “Shilpa Ray‘s songs combine early Blondie‘s garage rock with psychobilly pounding, the bloodthirsty imagination of The Cramps and the burlesque of The Dresden Dolls,“ says the American press. Shilpa Ray represents a new generation of New York rock and roll, and her relevance has been confirmed by such stellar fans as Patti Smith and Nick Cave. A somewhat cheeky charisma, a harmonium and a surge of energy..

SMALL ISLAND BIG SONG (INDONESIA, NEW CALEDONIA, NEW ZEALAND, ISLANDS AND TAIWAN)

One of the most fascinating musical events of 2018. An international project that shows how music can revels who we are and where we come from, and remind us of our close link to a nature threatened by climate change. They must be seen live is the best way to describe them.

SONS OF KEMET XL (GREAT BRITAIN)

19/7

18.30‒19.30 ArcelorMittal stage

A jazz band on a mission to rub your nerves while you think about whether the stuff they play can still be considered jazz as we know it. Probably not - but to hell with it. Let‘s rather fully enjoy these ambassadors of the British jazz rebellion who were nominated for the Mercury Prize, especially having them in a unique rhythmically overwhelming XL version with two extra drummers. Until recently, jazz was said to have had its day and to be conserved by emphasising its history. This path, however, was

forgotten with coming of the black generation of Kamas Washington and Shabak Hutchings. In an instant. The simplest criterion of THIS jazz is indefinability: the more Hutchings and the Sons of Kemet are eager to introduce us to jazz in heady experimental and boldly direct combinations with hip hop, grime, punk, afrobeat, dub, African Diaspora, Caribbean calypso, ska and carnivals, the more they move away from the original content of the word jazz. In fact, it is even more adventurous: the saxophonist and clarinettist Hutchings, the tuba player Theon Cross and two damn good drummers, Tom Skinner and Eddie Hick, have re-established the physical connection between musicians and the audience. They made the audience throw away the chairs and allowed them to think about the Sons of Kemet‘s jazz with their bodies.

TANK AND THE BANGAS (USA) The controlled chaos of New Orleans gospel-soul-funky with a slam poetry champion, rapper and singer Tarriona Ball, who does her best to match her nickname of Tank. It has nothing to do with her body, crazy hairstyles or rolling eyes. It came from her impressive spontaneity and the ability to pour out words with in19/7 credible energy, as if from a machine gun. She and her 00.45‒01.45 Bangas band can excite any crowd like an enthusiasgloTM FRESH stage tic Baptist pastor until even unbelievers wave their hands and shout ‘amen’ in a rush at the end. “We’re lighters - we gotta spark people“ she says about themselves. After a compelling victory at the Tiny Desk Contest, reviewers wrote: “Tank and the Bangas are like a blast of psychedelic rap joy. Like a female equivalent of Sly Stone, transited to 2017 and landed in New Orleans.“

TĘSKNO (Poland)

18/7

19.00‒20.00 Full Moon stage

Joanna Longić and Hanna Raniszewska, together embarking on a captivating journey into the depths of the human soul; their debut album ‘Mi’ contains twelve compositions and reflects their fascination with chamber music and Scandinavian pop. Keyboards, a violin and non-traditional instrumentation including electronic loops and vocals in a combination of fragility, melodiousness and gentleness with a natural talent for experimentation. Full Moon wrote: “... warm and soothing like a hug, or a nostalgic memory echoing somewhere deep in the mind.“

THE CURE (Great Britain) A legendary rock band that is worth aging with, without fearing you will be mocked by the young. There is no one like The Cure. And there won‘t be until Robert Smith, the model for Edward Scissorhands, wipes off his red lipstick and black eye shadow, gives up the struggle 20/7 with the futility of existence, lets his extrava21.15‒23.30 gant hairstyle become matted and the black Česká spořitelna stage spider finally gets its dinner. Although they came out of the leaven of the 1980‘s and released their last album ten years ago, the sun has not set on their glory. Straddling post-punk, gothic, new wave, pop and psychedelics, The Cure have influenced several musical generations. They have brought together similarly tuned souls from around the world and asked themselves the question: Is it really possible that such depressing, even morbidly decadent songs, sung in a self-pitying voice, can bring pleasure? And does it really matter if we all die? The Cure have always been friends with darkness, but at the same time they could light it up with some of the most romantic perennials that the rock remembers. Loyal fans do not need a dry historical factual account of The Cure - they can chant it in their sleep. And the younger fans do not need it either. They voluntarily enter the depressing rock bath, even if invited in by 60-year-olds. This can actually be considered an anomaly – or confirmation of the timelessness and uniqueness of The Cure.

THE ESKIES (Ireland) Gypsy-klezmer-swing-cabaret-rockabilly-blues from Dublin. Nothing for wimps on antidepressants. This five-piece band perceives a good Irish funeral to be infinitely more entertaining than a wedding. They do not spare anything at their concerts and leave puritans ex20/7 pecting ‘ordinary‘ Irish music severely 23.45‒00.45 disappointed. The singer and guitarist Ian BerDrive stage by MINI mingham described their second album And Don‘t Spare The Horses bluntly: “We head rather towards the darker side of things, so we sing a lot about suffering, conflict, betrayal, rebellion, love, loss, fear and anger. We like to focus on these things, exaggerate them and shout them out or laugh at them.“

THE KILL DEVIL HILLS (Australia) The Kill Devil Hills come from Fremantle, Australia and play a distinctive mix of outlaw country, folk and blues, all under a rock umbrella with a striking garage sound. Myths and ballads for old cowboys and debauched gunmen. Britain’s Guardian ranked their ‘In On Under Water’ album of 2017 among the ten major recordings of the Australian underground. The Aussie cowboys will present their current ‘Pink Fit’ album in Ostrava. Fans of Nick Cave, The Drones or Cash Savage should be on the lookout.

THE SHERLOCKS (Great Britain)

19/7

15.00‒16.00 gloTM FRESH stage

Two pairs of brothers - Kiaran and Brandon Crook and Andy and Josh Davidson - came up with a brave plan: to take another look at British guitar indie rock. They do not try to hide their role models: the Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon and The Libertines, for which they have played as support and gained recognition from Noel Gallagher himself. He especially appreciated the band‘s catchy melodies and the energy erupting from their debut Live for the Moment, which made it to number six in the UK charts.

TOKiMONSTA (USA)

20/7

23.00‒00.30 YouTube Music stage

Her music will get you moving while her personal story will nail you down. TOKiMONSTA, a comic book persona, shines in front of you on the horizon while the American producer Jennifer Lee pulls the strings behind the scenes. TOKiMONSTA was diagnosed with the rare Moyamoya disease years ago. She underwent a series of challenging brain surgeries and had to re-learn to walk and communicate. She perceived music only as an unpleasant surge of cold sounds. In spite of all this, she

conquered the pop heavens in 2017. Her third album Lune Rouge has been nominated for a Grammy and has become part of the natural development of a fascinating artist whose musical form is based on sensitive electronics and hip-hop beats.

TOM WALKER (Great Britain) This Scottish songwriter with a thunderous voice entered the UK scene without pomp or media pandering, but with many likeable features and a desire to continue working hard. He could fill in ‘full-time hit-maker‘ as his occupation in a questionnaire. The glo18/7 bal hits Leave A Light On, Angels, Fly Away 17.45‒18.45 With Me, Blessings and My Way have seČeská spořitelna stage riously rattled both the UK and European charts, not to mention the ratings on YouTube. They have also scored in the U.S. The BBC Sound of 2018, MTV Brand New 2018, and Shazam‘s Next To Know polls then had no choice but to point out this native of Glasgow who grew up in Manchester and London. He characterises himself with exaggeration, claiming to be a mix of hip hop, a bit of blues, a dose of pop and a drop of reggae.

TUYO (Brazil)

19/7

19.30‒20.30 gloTM FRESH stage

Electric/acoustic pop with afro-futuristic sound aesthetics. Fresh and creative MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) for the new generation by Jean Machado and sisters Lay and Lio Soares. An acoustic guitar, synthesisers, complex rippling and hip hop beats, airy pop melodies, decent R&B, but mainly beautiful voices underlining the intimate atmosphere of the songs.

UNIFORM (USA)

18/7

21.00‒22.00 Full Moon stage

Uniform will take care of the hardest concert of this year‘s festival programme. This almost metal darkness, driven by the industrial style heavy-duty beat, will perfectly match the Vítkovice settings. The scathing guitar crunch, combined with punk fury, pervasive demeanour and grim and evocative atmosphere have attracted crowds of listeners, including David Lynch, who used two of their songs for his latest season of Twin Peaks.

WINSTON MCANUFF & FIXI (Jamaica/France) The Jamaican reggae veteran and Parisian accordionist Fixi is in action again. Together they have created something like a hymn to musical fraternity. They have been destined for each other, bound by Winston‘s creed: “Singing that change someone‘s life for the better 20/7 –songs that‘s what gives us the power to continue.“ 17.30‒18.30 They would go to the ends of the world for Drive stage by MINI a catchy melody to embed it in their dance blend of pop, Cuban music, afrobeat, Maloya songs from Réunion Island and hip hop, where reggae can be perceived more as an attitude than anything else. A lesson in spreading love and humanism. Winston‘s songs take on a mischievous tinge thanks to Fixi‘s accordion and the band, but his stunning soul voice can also utter a warning: let us grab our happiness and respect it.

XAVIER RUDD (Australia)

20/7

23.45‒00.45 ArcelorMittal stage

A cool folk-rock singer with a captivating voice for whom music is a kind of religion and a way of breathing. One of Australia‘s most highly-reputed musicians has been steadfastly authentic and firm in his views on nature conservation, respect for Aborigines and human freedom for twenty years. This charisma-

tic long-haired guitarist, percussionist, didgeridoo and harmonica player has a copyright on uplifting melodic and deeply honest songs in which folk-rock mingles with tribal grooves, reggae and pop of Paul Simon‘s type. A passionate surfer who is said to embody the spirit of Australia, he is a model for delivering optimism, albeit while castigating politicians, multinational corporations, populists and the abuses of the contemporary world.

YEARS & YEARS (Great Britain) An energetic dance electro-pop trio led by singer, musician and actor Olly Alexander, currently an icon and unmistakable musical spokesman of the LGBT community. Years & Years won the BBC Radio 1 Sound of 2015 and their commercially successful debut Com19/7 munion took them to the top of the British 22.15‒23.30 charts. They won four Brit Awards and their Česká spořitelna highly watched video clips turned into an stage unrestrained celebration of both the queer community and Olly‘s identity. The Palo Santo album futuristically explores life on a distant planet where human beings are rare. Yet the music of Years & Years remains down to Earth: loyal to the hedonistic synthpop of the 1990s and spiced with some R&B.

YONATAN GAT & THE EASTERN MEDICINE SINGERS (Israel/USA) A transcendent ceremony of a rock trio and drumming Algonquin medicine men taking place in the midst of the audience. Music that no one can be prepared for. Those who have experienced their concerts face a major problem: how do they explain what they have seen and 20/7 experienced spiritually? The life of Yonatan 20.00‒21.00 Gat, a world-renowned guitarist, would be Drive stage by MINI much simpler if he could tell his colleagues – drummer Gal Lazer and bassist Sergio Sayeg – what to play. But he can‘t. Even he himself does not have a clue, absorbed in the improvisational rush and instant sound experimentation. Gat considers music to be a kind of shared art form, while the limits of genres, cultures, and styles are totally alien to him. The pow-wow ceremony, the pulse of which is determined by the intense thumping of drums and the unique style of wordless singing, represents a symbol of cultural unity and the power of the native North American nations. They believe in spiritual bonding

with nature, perceiving life and death as an inevitable circle. So the pow-wow also takes place in a circle. And Gat‘s trio stands in the latter, around The Eastern Medicine Singers of Rhode Island. You end up watching a ceremony where every jerky guitar riff or blow to the sacred drum literally makes your body flinch.

YOUN SUN NAH TRIO (South Korea) A unique jazz singer with whom it is not enough to get an assurance that you are not dreaming. Many actually consider her a UFO from space. She is one of the most remarkable voices of contemporary jazz, impressing listeners all over the world. Yet she approaches 18/7 jazz with such a volatile attitude that calling 20.30‒21.30 Cylinders her a jazz singer is actually against her belief Gong stage in musical freedom and the right to sing covers in her own inimitable way. And when doing so, it is unimportant whether she focuses on jazz, French chanson, rock, English folk or collaborates with the veteran of the avant-garde New York jazz scene John Zorn. Youn Sun Nah combines irritant expressiveness with intimacy, and perfection with intuition. With her vocal creativity, you never know what she is going to get you with next time, especially at concerts, like the one in London followed by a newspaper headline: “A shy vocal champion getting the audience out of their seats“. Two great multi-instrumentalists will accompany her at Colours: Tomek Miernowski (guitars, keyboards and electronics) and Rémi Vignolo (drums, double bass and electronics).

ZAZ (France) There is never enough of ZAZ! They know this all over the world, which has been on her side for so long – thanks to her appearance, in which you can drown, her contagious songs and her heart worn on her sleeve. She has released several extremely successful 20/7 albums, visited four continents, and collec18.45‒19.45 ted tributes from Charles Aznavour, Russell Česká spořitelna stage Crowe, Martin Scorsese and Plácido Domingo. This hyperactive singer, gifted with credibility and a sensual voice, has achieved a position in which it does not matter what genre she picks, whether gypsy jazz, chanson, rock or pop with a Latin flavour. “There are

many things that define me because I don‘t want to get stuck in one box, losing the chance to sing what I like.“ ZAZ attracts attention not only with her appealing music. She regularly comments on world events, insisting on humanistic values and nature conservation. She founded the Zazimut non-profit organisation, focusing on education and promoting events leading to mutual respect between people.

Where history meets modernism – in a special way - to create something original. Starring Nasser Halahlih & Isam Elias. They create wild syntheses of Arabic electronics and dabke, a traditional dance from the Levant, both under the influence of Egyptian and North African urban pop. This sparkling duo, enjoyed by Brian Eno among others, spreads and develops the forms and colours of the Arabic electronic underground. The Israeli daily Haaretz linked it with the beginnings of an Arab musical revolution.

CZ & SK BANDS 52 HERTZ WHALE (SK)

BURGR & PJONI (SK)

This Slovak quintet is hard to nail down. Their expressive guitar mode could be labelled emo or postrock, all shrouded in crushing melancholy.

The merger of Lubomír Burgr, an iconic figure of the Slovak alternative scene, and Jonatán Pastirčák shows the quality of a well-proven original in the context of modern electronic sound design.

AGU Agu effectively capitalises on her classical vocal and opera studies in her songs, moving within the seemingly traditional territory between indie rock, folk and lyrically ambient pop.

DAN BÁRTA & ILLUSTRATOSPHERE An unmistakable singer with a unique voice and dazzling band enchants listeners across the generations and musical genres.

BA:ZEL Post-techno, trip-hop, wave, trap beats. An electro-acoustic child unexpectedly born to two foreigners on their global travels - Ewelina Chiu (vocals, piano, synthesiser and flute) and Daniel Vlček (vocals, drum machines, synthesisers and bass guitar).

BERT & FRIENDS The most famous band of 2050 coming back in time to play its greatest hits of 2049. This court band of global president Bill Bexton holds awards for enlightening all musical genres including future-bleebop. Created by Albert Romanutti, singer, keyboardist and hit-maker.

BUTY A legend from Ostrava and authors of unforgettable hits. And if you do not know it – which is virtually impossible – their music blends a large number of musical styles (rock, urban folk, folklore of different ethnic groups, country, jazz, reggae, etc.) and is topped off with inspired and funny lyrics.

BEN CRISTOVAO & THE GLOWSTICKS One of the most distinctive domestic mainstream singers and artists. His songs have been fine-tuned by the Canadian producer Osama Verse-Atile from The Glowsticks.

FLOEX & TOM HODGE Tomáš Dvořák (Floex) – a clarinet player, composer, producer and multimedia artist, the British producer Tom Hodge, and a virtual orchestra – together in an impressive audiovisual experience.

GHOST OF YOU

renowned Czech producers Dušan Neuwerth, Tomáš Neuwerth and Viktor Hokeš.

ISAMA ZING (SK) Under his new alter ego, the innovator formerly known as Pjoni presents his own post-club vision of the world of deconstructed beats without being tied up by genre dogmas or technologies.

KALLE WITH ACOUSTIC BAND

An indie-rock band mingling fragile emotions and the momentary energy. Psychedelic pop and a stunning energetic show combined with the tender charismatic performances of frontman Tomáš Novohradský. The Black Yoga album produced by Ondřej Ježek earned them praise from critics and invitations to major foreign festivals.

Songs from the world where love has won. Kalle‘s music is far from all the contemporary trends and the hustle of modern civilisation; they will present their intimate hits in a non-traditional, fragile, acoustic form as part of a six-piece band.

CHIEF BROMDEN

Miroslav Kemel is a draughtsman and caricaturist who makes quick work of politicians. Yet Mirek is also a sought-after songwriter with an accordion and a great band behind him.

The winners of the 1band2play 2019 contest have attracted attention with their inspired math rock, spiced up with mood-making electronics, with the merits of energy and ferocity.

I LOVE YOU HONEY BUNNY + SPACE SHIP An indie-rock band, active since December 2013 and featuring Sebastian Jacques (vocals), Martin Šolc (guitar), Kristián Kraevski (bass) and Josef Keil (drums). Their debut album was created with assistance of the

MIREK KEMEL

KHOIBA A deep immersion in the shared world of Ema Brabcová and Filip Míšek. It can evoke feelings of duality: Khoiba are bare and veiled, brutal and gentle, disturbing and soothing, containing hope and hopelessness, full of distance and connections, nooks and layers to fit in. They balance on the edge of several genres and the ingredients they spice their electronic music with are unimportant.

KRYŠTOF A pop-rock band led by Richard Krajčo, singer, songwriter and musician. In their time the band have become of the most successful Czech pop groups. They have received awards in the Český Slavík and Anděl music contests.

LANUGO A cross-genre ensemble playing modern pop, jazz and soul with a subtle touch of electronics, combining several strengths and trumps. The dynamic vocals of Markéta Foukalová are accompanied by Viliam Béreš‘ piano, Rastislav Uhrík‘s double bass, Martin Kopřiva‘s drums, Mirek Šmilauer‘s guitar and Martin Novák‘s percussion.

MARKET The Market quintet experienced a rocket-like start on the Czech club scene; after an era of sad guitar songs, finally someone who goes for boundless energy and sends the fans home in sweat-soaked T-shirts.

MC GEY A man with a peculiar name and even more peculiar lyrics who goes beyond all ideas of how a rapper should act, look and talk. Originality and unpredictability. MC Gey.

MESSENJAH & COCOMAN Two of the currently most active MCs. MessenJah has been at the top of the local reggae/dancehall scene for several years, but he is winning more and more of an audience across the genres and generations. Cocoman is known as the reggae singer and

producer behind such projects as Sklizeň or Nevereš.

MIRAI A pop band led by the singer and guitarist Mirai Navrátil. The Český Slavík and Anděl public contests gave this band awards in 2017.

MR. TEDDY AND THE SIDEKICKS Rockabilly, psychobilly, punk, country, swing and jazz from Martin, Slovakia. A party for those who want to find themselves back in the times of wild rock‘n‘roll and hot swing.

MUCHA A Brno-based pseudo-punk formation gathered around Nikola Mucha, a songwriter and eccentric who has become known in the society through her blunt behaviour, weird hairstyle and provocative songs.

NEDIVOČ A band from Ostrava which draws mainly on the work of its drummer Jiří Krhut. They play cheerfully, sadly, sweetly and bitterly, simply telling stories about life that everyone knows.

NERO SCARTCH A project of the multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer Jakub Svoboda, accompanied by additional musicians ranging from hard electronic music with heavy-metal guitars, through ambient to industrial.

NYLON JAIL Irreversible Changes, the second album, definitively confirmed their comeback in which the electro-country style box no longer fits. Harder guitar riffs, emotionally flavoured ballads and sharp dance rhythms document the irreversible changes in the history of the band, the history of which includes the Vinyla award and a genre nomination for an Anděl.

OCHEPOVSKY The band of Igor Ochepovsky, a composer and guitarist from Russia who has been living and working in Prague for more than six years. Original compositions on the borders of Eastern and Western culture, blending jazz and classical European composition techniques, held together by a modern groove.

OSWALDOVI The Oswalds, Italian-Prague nomads, draw their inspiration, naturally and masterfully, from North American folk, westerns and African desert blues. Folk-spaghetti-rock with a heck of a distant horizon.

POKÁČ A talented young lyricist, who has already worked for many singers. Pokáč is also a recognised songwriter and the most distinctive urban folk singer of the new generation.

POST-HUDBA Post-Hudba was a generational voice already at the time when words like “millennial“

or “hipster“ were not yet in use. They will come to Colours to present this year’s album ‘Není Se Na Co Těšit’, full of electronics and poetry.

POVODÍ OHŘE Fanatic faith, dark fluid. The rock quintet Povodí Ohře is headed by the charismatic frontman Sisi; do not expect roots rock, gothic country or heavy blues. Sudetenland full of romance and ruin.

PRAGO UNION Their boss Kato, a ‘biting toothless poet‘, is not a handsome magazine icon and his chances of becoming a sex symbol are also probably over. Radios do not play their songs and they do not have any hits. They are woody, they are earthy, they reek of humanity and they have devoted fans from across the genres. These are so numerous that the band plays more often than most. They have 2 Anděl awards and reviewers worship them.

RÁNY TĚLA The decadent phantom of Prague club scenes bringing postpunk and industrial with cuddly soul echoes. Their new album with the indicative title of ‘Maybe It‘s Fantasy’, has been released after twenty-two years.

SLEPÍ KŘOVÁCI Only the deaf could miss this ‘blind‘ band. They will make you dance with wild rhythms, subdue you with mystical-sounding didgeridoo, make you laugh with funny lyrics and make your heart rock with rock‘n‘roll guitar riffs.

DAVID STYPKA & BANDJEEZ

TIME SHIFTERS

A charismatic poet but mainly an unconventional artist whose songs exude the fragrances of urban folk, rock, jazz and electronics; surrounded by first-class musicians. David‘s popularity has been confirmed by his Discovery of the Year award in the Žebřík public survey and the Anděl awarded by the Czech Pop Music Academy in the soloist category.

They pour punk rock’n’roll all over you, raw and loud. They are Time Shifters. All these instrumental beasts are led by Karolína, a microphone-holding devil in a female incarnation with bewitching vocals!

THE FIALKY Currently one of the most popular Czech punk rock bands. Their recordings and image clearly refer to the first wave of the ‘punk77‘ bands but their live performances are rather wild – almost street-punk rides.

TOLSTOYS (SK) Five Slovaks presenting a magical combination of electronics and acoustic instruments, civil but captivating lyrics, and picturesque melodies that caress and hurt, and reveal some echoes of Slovak folklore.

VENTOLIN Acid - techno - house - mystic - hymnic - nerdy - live electronics band made up of robots and a conductor. A one-man effect-box band and a hilarious live show.

≈ THEATRE PERFORMANCES ≈ 420PEOPLE & PLEASE THE TREES: THE WATCHER A contemporary dance show by 420PEOPLE and a rock concert of Please The Trees! A production, accompanied by Please The Trees, which set vibrating all those who look for answers to questions about how to face accelerated times in which state-of-the-art technology is slowly suppressing the essence of humanity. Why are we almost unable to exist without a mobile signal and why does its failure take us to the verge of madness? Why the endless 24/7 Google and Netflix are our only friends in the middle of the night? The answer is presented by the WATCHER – an observer who knows that our own body is the world‘s most advanced technology and our lives are strings that together weave an endless cosmic carpet of being ...

We cannot stretch our limits without it, we cannot go forward or punch above our weight. We focus on the essence of collapse, what it does to an individual and to a whole society. Will society turn its back on the collapsing? Will the society use the collapse of an individual or offer a helping hand?

≈ PREPARED FOR YOU ≈ BY OUR PARTNERS THE GEORGE ZONE OF ČESKÁ SPOŘITELNA Colours and Spořitelna are not just fair weather friends. Just as in the old Czech movie ‘Friends in the Rain‘, they are together where there is music, fun and people ready to enjoy themselves – simply under any conditions. Thanks to the Česká Spořitelna George Zone, all such friends will come into their own. You can meet inspiring and cool people within Meltingpot. A good vibe will be generated by Anna Marešová, for example. You don‘t know who she is? Google her and you will understand :) Be sure to check out the Meltingpot programme. We guarantee that someone will capture your attention. And if you want to meet celebrities, we have a high-tech surprise for you. Nobody will serve you topless at our bar, but cashless is the word; you can pay with a mobile phone, a watch or a card without problem. You can buy, for example, our high-flavoured Blue George Drink, made by bartenders from Bugsy‘s bar. In the evening, you can show your dance creations at the Laser Robot Dance, in which your graceful (or slightly uncoordinated) movements will be projected onto a smoke stack. You can also stamp your feet to super music from our DJs who will spin their turntables in our George Zone. Do not miss the 3D printer in which you can print your own ‘merch’. Be curious, be brave, simply be Georgeous. :)

DANCE FOR LIFE A dance party waits for you again in the Dance for Life Tent where you can help others by having fun. How is it possible? Our dancers will teach you some simple choreography. Depending on how successfully you mimic their movement, you earn points that ArcelorMittal Ostrava converts into money. You then assign the money to one of the two non-profit projects in the Ostrava region. Your dance can support the operation of the Surgery for the Poor or the restoration and care of wetlands along the Ostravice and Morávka rivers. The best dancers will be rewarded with gifts! After a dance, you can relax in the Relax Zone of site. Apart from resting, you will meet our partners in the Dance for Life project: The Salvation Army, Salamandr Czech Union for Nature Conservation, Ondrášek Mobile Hospice and Mental Café. All of them have prepared a variety of relaxing activities for you. And remember: The Dance for Life Tent is the only place where you can get one of the 15,000 ‘Colours of Ostrava 2019’ CDs for free.

The Zone

The City of Ostrava Zone offers not only a chance to rest or get refreshment, but also a lot of fun and education focusing on the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution this year. The Zone offers pleasant seating under parasols with a view of the main festival stage and a cool drinking water fountain that comes in handy on hot summer days. The Zone includes a stand called Ostrava 30+, where you can test your knowledge of Ostrava by playing an interactive game, the goal of which is to find its famous structures on a magnetic air map. Children can have fun playing with big wooden cubes or jig-saw puzzles with photos of Ostrava landmarks. Thanks to our professional make-up artists in the SametOVA make-up room, you can get the right festival look in the colours of the city of Ostrava and then take a photo with your friends in front of a background depicting the revolutionary mood on Ostrava‘s Masaryk Square in 1989. You can learn how to respond to this year‘s call for beautification and modification of the public space in Ostrava and obtain money for your project at the FajnOVA stand. You will be welcomed by the FajnOVA team, who will present the already implemented projects. Practical and more detailed information is provided at the Ostrava Information Service site. So do not hesitate! Visiting the SametOVA Zone will give you not only nice experiences but also heart-warming gifts.

ČEZ FAMILY PARK AND ČEZ ENERGY ZONE Small children and their parents can have a lot of fun in their popular ČEZ Family Park including a programme full of theatres, concerts, dance and sports workshops, a science show, handicrafts, a sports track, game zones, the Children‘s Stage with babysitting and a nursing tent. We recommend, among others the Čiperky, Bombarďák and Docela bands, SemTamFór Independent Theatre, Terka the Squirrel and Klárka the Mouse and Freelance Clowns. And also the Small Island Big Song workshop on Wednesday, which will create a Pacific atmosphere by showcasing traditional dances of New Zealand and Tahiti. What can you do in the ČEZ Energy Zone? Recharge your energy! This Zone, presented for the first time at Colours, offers several opportunities such as recharging your mobile phone (powerbanks to rent) or recharging your own ‘batteries‘ (chill zone, stylish seating, hanging swings, rocking boards and more). Also, there will be an attractive competition for prizes with the Energy Hunter panel or atypical photo box. Fans of the Orange Wheel can look forward to a surprise – charity will not be achieved by pedalling on bikes but on handbikes. The biking-generated energy can then be poured into a moneybox of Bikes for Africa or the La Vida Loca Foundation.

CZECH INDUSTRIAL HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANY You can look forward to the very popular airbrush tattoos and to differently focused quizzes at the stand of the Czech Industrial Health Insurance Company. We will measure not only the amount of fat in your body but also the muscle tissue and visceral (inner) fat using the

InBody device. In addition, you can compete for practical gifts. Come and visit us, we look forward to meeting you. And don’t forget to take proper care of your health not only during the Colours of Ostrava, but also after the festival ends.

BEER INTO A GLASS IN RADEGAST PUB

You can enjoy the properly bitter beer from the tank in the traditional Moravian Radegast Pub next to the main stage. Will you order the extra bitter ‘Ryze Hořká 12‘, the non-filtered ‘Nefiltrovaná 12‘ or ‘Rázná 10‘ tapped by our bartenders, or will you tap your own beer in the popular Tapping School under professional supervision next to a larger-than-life Radegast statue? In any case, you will enjoy beer in the same quality as in the brewery, fresh and properly treated. The best festival deserves the best beer service. And we do our best to make your beer enjoyable in the best quality. A special team oversees the festival beer bars to make sure the beer is properly tapped and tastes excellent. This team also trained all the bar tenders in the Tapping School before the festival. Care is taken not only of beer but also entertainment. Apart from great beer, the Radegast Pub offers an entertainment zone full of adrenaline attractions, all in the spirit of “Life is bitter; thank God“.

FOAMY FUN IN THE KOFOLA ZONE

Come to a world of insatiable creatures called Pěnožrouti (foam-eaters) who love the foam on freshly tapped Kofola more than anything else! No jar or festival cup is safe with them around! Download the ‘Pěnožrouti 2‘ app to your phone and catch them before they devour the foam from your Kofola. Try to catch Pěnožrouti in the KOFOLA ZONE! You can find the Kofola Zone next to the Kofola CS Stage just like last year. To avoid wasting your data by downloading the app, we‘ve provided wi-fi for you. In addition, we have prepared great fun not only with the virtual gluttonous creatures, but mainly with the real foam eaters! Practice your shooting skills and try to get a true Pěnožrout from Foamville Town. All efforts are rewarded! Come and have a perfectly chilled Kofola with us and have fun with Pěnožrouti!

RESIDOMO WILL TAKE YOU HOME

Residomo offers convenient transport from the festival to Ostrava-Poruba, Karviná, Orlová, Havířov and Frýdek Místek. We recommend that you do not hesitate with the purchase! Vehicles depart from Železárenská Street, the stops are about 300 metres from the main gate. You will not miss the access route to the stops as it starts in front of the main gate and will be marked

with navigating signs. The proceeds from the service will be donated to the Residomo Foundation in support of the Way Home project, designed for young people leaving orphanages or foster care. In 2018, the RESIDOMO Foundation handed over three apartments and they plan to support another 20 young people in 2019.
