RELIEF Funding Awards

Top $22,000

As a result of funding from an innovative program that helps offset costs with unpaid internships, 35 Tarleton State University students in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts (COLFA) received financial assistance to enable them to complete an unpaid internship.

In its first full year, 69 students applied for RELIEF, Real-world Experiential Learning Internship Education Fund, assistance. In total, 35 students from seven COLFA departments qualified to receive financial assistance, totaling $22,420 COLFA has over 1800 undergraduate and graduate students across six academic programs in Stephenville and Fort Worth. Internships provide hands-on education through real-world learning and thus are a vital part of the COLFA curriculum

Dr. Cessna Winslow oversees the Communication Studies department’s internship program Seeing a need to help students pursue unpaid internships, in 2021 she created RELIEF with funds from private donors. RELIEF grew substantially with an award from President James Hurley’s Presidential Fund for Excellence

The College of Liberal and Fine Arts is the incubator for the program The goal is that eventually RELIEF funding will be available to students across the university.

RELIEF recipient Reagan Marriott (Spring ‘23) interned at a nonprofit agency that provides life skills and job training classes to those in need Reagan’s internship required her to travel to events and take pictures for the agency ’ s website and social media pages. Reagan commented, “Thankfully, I was equipped with a camera but RELIEF funds allowed me to purchase some needed accessories ” She added, “Taking an unpaid internship was risky because it took me away from paid work. This scholarship took away that fear and stress which allowed me to dedicate more time to the learning experience that was this internship."

Dr. Jennifer Edwards In LA Times on Ye and Parler

Jennifer T Edwards, executive director of the Texas Social Media Research Institute and the Rural Communication Institute at Tarleton State University, was quoted in an October 18, 2022 Los Angeles Times article discussing the social media platform Parler. “Parler is a niche social media platform on which conservatives feel the most comfortable. Users flock to sites that make them feel like they belong,” she said Ye (formerly Kanye West) is one of the most visible Parler users, and in her mind, the recent conservative controversies that he has been involved in may be a boost to the platform. “Through West’s efforts, Parler has the potential to become more mainstream,” Edwards said. “People who have never heard of the social media platform will flock to it, merely out of curiosity ” Dr Edwards teaches graduate courses in Social Media Strategy, Social Media Campaigns, and Applied Social Media.

Tarleton State University Ranked a Top School for Online Master's in Criminal Justice for 2023

Tarleton has been ranked as one of the nation’s best colleges for online master’s programs in criminal justice Just six percent of regionally accredited postsecondary institutions earned a ranking position

RENO, Nev. (PRWEB)

January 16, 2023 – Tarleton State University has been recognized as one of the best schools for online learning at the master’s level by OnlineMastersDegrees.org (OMD). Tarleton’s criminal justice programs earned top honors for overall quality, affordability and commitment to student success.

See where Tarleton ranked below:

Most Affordable Online Master's Degrees in Criminal Justice –https://www onlinemasters degrees org/mostaffordable/criminaljustice-programs/

"This year, we focused on the schools making it easier for students to compete in today’s increasingly difficult job market,” said Kyle Darland, co-founder of OMD.

“Each ranked school offers a fully or partially online master’s program in criminal justice at a time when earning a master’s has become a minimum barrier to entry for many. ”

Darland is referencing a recent survey from CareerBuilder, which found that “thirty-three percent of employers are hiring workers

with master’s degrees for positions that had been primarily held by those with four-year degrees.” These employers cited an evolution of the skills needed to perform the jobs as the cause of theshift, and an increase in work quality, productivity and employee retention as the result

“Providing students with opportunities to get a master’s online is only part of our rankings,” said Darland “Top-ranked schools also had competitive tuition rates and/or scholarships to help drive costs down And with grocery, gas and other expenses on everyone ’ s mind right now, an affordable master’s is key.”

OnlineMastersDegrees org analyzed more than 7,700 accredited universities by using data pulled from the schools themselves and from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). After the data was compiled, OMD’s data science team then applied a proprietary algorithm to rank all qualifying schools for each of the different master’s degrees specialties

Primary data points Include, academic counseling services, career placement services, student/faculty ratio, tuition, present of students receiving school-based aid, and amount of school-based aid per student Continued on next page.

To be eligible for ranking, a university must hold active regional accreditation and have at least one partially online master’s program in the ranking subject. Just 8 percent of U.S. postsecondary institutions earned a ranking position.

Dr. Patrick Kindig Releases New Book

Most cultural critics theorize modernity as a state of disenchanted distraction, one linked to both the rationalizing impulses of scientific and technological innovation and the kind of dispersed, fragmented attention that characterizes the experience of mass culture Patrick Kindig’s Fascination, however, tells a different story, showing that many fin-de-siècle Americans were in fact concerned about (and intrigued by) the modern world’s ability to attract and fix attention in quasisupernatural ways Rather than being distracting, modern life in their view had an almost magical capacity to capture attention and overwhelm rational thought

Fascination argues that, in response to the dramatic scientific and cultural changes of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many American thinkers and writers came to conceive of the modern world as fundamentally fascinating Describing such diverse phenomena as the electric generator, the movements of actresses, and ethnographic cinema as supernaturally alluring, they used the language of fascination to process and critique both popular ideologies of historical progress and the racializing logic upon which these ideologies were built.

Drawing on an archive of primary texts from the fields of medicine, (para)psychology, philosophy, cultural criticism, and anthropology―as well as creative texts by Harriet Prescott Spofford, Charles Chesnutt, Theodore Dreiser, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Edward S. Curtis, Robert J. Flaherty, and Djuna Barnes Kindig reconsiders what it meant for Americans to be (and to be called) modern at the turn of the twentieth century.

Dorinth Doherty: Archiving Eden

The Department of Visual Arts and Design proudly to presented Dornith Doherty: Archiving Eden, which was on view at the Clyde H Wells Gallery of Art at Tarleton State University from January 12th through February 8th, 2023. For the last 15 years, Texas-based photographer Dornith Doherty has traveled and photographed the spaces and contents of seed banks around the world In the images that make up the series Archiving Eden, Dornith has constructed a visual meditation on the planet’s botanical diversity by focusing on the remarkable aesthetics of seeds and the places constructed to conserve biodiversity,

Collaborating with renowned biologists and supported by a 2012 Guggenheim Fellowship, Doherty initially began photographing the seed vaults to examine the role of seed banks and their preservation efforts in the face of climate change, the extinction of natural species, and decreased agricultural diversity Locations in the series include the United States Department of Agriculture; Agricultural Research Service’s National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation (Colorado); the Millennium Seed Bank (England); PlantBank; Threatened Flora Centre and Kings Park Botanic Gardens (Australia), and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (Norway).

Speaking about her process Dornith explains: “Utilizing the archives’ on-site x-ray equipment that is routinely used for viability assessments of accessioned seeds, I document and subsequently collage the seeds and tissue samples stored in these crucial collections.

The amazing visual power of magnified x-ray images, which springs from the technology’s ability to record what is invisible to the human eye, illuminates my considerations not only of the complex philosophical, anthropological, and ecological issues surrounding the role of science and human agency in relation to gene banking, but also of the poetic questions about life and time on a macro and micro scale.”

Dornith will be giving a free, public lecture about her work combining art and scientific research in the Fine Arts Theater at Tarleton State University on February 7th at 3pm

TFS 104th Annual Meeting

Part conference, part music concert, and a whole lot of fun, planning is underway for Texas Folklore Society’s 104th Annual Meeting, which will be held in Waco on April 6–8, 2023. Rich with history and full of traditions, there's a lot to love about Waco; staff, board members, and other volunteers are working to ensure that the Society’s first in-person meeting since 2019 is one for the books

The annual event includes presentation of papers some are fascinating, some are astounding, some are fun, and some are side-splittingly-talk-about-it-for-years hilarious Attendees also have the opportunity to tour a local attraction, attend the President’s Reception, and participate in nighttime hootenanny.

“Texas Folklore Society hootenannies is where I learned the value of the songs that I heard growing up," says longtime TFS member and recent hootenanny leader Lee Haile said "The hoot was the one thing that hooked me in the beginning and kept me coming back year after year when I was very young in this organization Nothing unites folks like the music they share, and that alone is reason enough to try to keep these old songs going." TFS members are invited and encouraged to attended the event.
