Twenty-five years ago, in June 2000, it was announced that Lethbridge’s city tartan had been officially registered with the Scottish Tartan Society.
Then, in August 2000, during the official opening ceremonies for the present city hall, Frances Schultz and the Tartan Design Committee of the Lethbridge Handicraft Guild presented the Lethbridge Official Tartan to the City of Lethbridge.
The colours of the City Crest were used as inspiration for the tartan:
Green – trees and grass
Gold – ripe harvest fields
Red – RCMP and its history
White – for the snow
Yellow – for the sun and canola fields
Light blue – the blue skies
Steel blue – the mountains
Black – the coal mining history
Pink – the Alberta rose

At 71 years old, Stan Volk steps up wherever help is needed. For more than half his life, he’s been a steady presence behind the scenes of countless community events and sports in Lethbridge coaching youth teams, supporting festivals, and lending a hand at finish lines.
Stan’s volunteer ourney began in ‘86 when his daughter wanted to play soccer, but the team had no coach. With no e perience but a willingness to help, Stan raised his hand. That same spirit followed him through years of coaching, bookkeeping, and eventually supporting larger events like the Dragon Boat Festival and the Lethbridge Air Show. Whether handing out water at the Lost Soul ltra or helping behind the scenes at archery competitions, he’s found countless ways to stay involved.
Now retired, Stan is busier than ever. Though his knees might require him to sitmore than stand, that hasn’t slowed him down. Through the Lethbridge Sport ouncil’s Sport Volunteer Hub, he’s found accessible, meaningful ways to keep giving back connecting with old friends, making new ones, and cheering on athletes of all ages.
“I've never been a great spectator,” he says. “I want to be involved in things.”
Stan’s story is proof that you don’t need to be an e pert, have loads of free time, or even be able to stand all day to make a real difference. All it takes is a willingness to say yeswhen someone asks for help.
From early mornings at Henderson Lake to late nights at the triathlon finish line, Stan has shown what a lifetime of community spirit looks like. His full story is sure to inspire anyone who’s ever thought, “Maybe I could help too.”
Roving Gyms are free, inclusive, play spaces for children five and under and their parents or caregivers.

In partnership with local sport organizations and their trained coaches, this camp offers youth an introduction to fundamental sport skills and free play to explore, move, and have fun.
For many families, the price tag on sport is too high. Registration fees, equipment costs, and travel expenses add up creating a significant barrier to participation, especially for children from lower-income households.
According to the 2024 ParticipACTION Report Card, only 55% of kids from the lowestincome households played organized sports last year, compared to 86% from the highestincome families. These financial barriers mean fewer opportunities for kids to be active, develop skills, and build confidence.
Sport is powerful. It helps kids grow, connect, and thrive. It should be for everyone but right now, it’s not.
From the 2024 ParticipACTION Report Card:
39% of children and youth (five to 17 years of age) in Canada met the recommendation of 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity per day.
Only 28% of children in the lowest-income households achieved recommended levels of unstructured play, compared to 18% in the highest-income households
Only 4% of children and youth meet all three components of physical activity, screen time, and sleep
From the 2024 Jumpstart State of Play Report:
The top three reasons why youth do not play sports are because sports are too expensive (47%), they have no time to play sports due to school work (28%), and they do not believe they are good enough to play (18%).
The Lethbridge Sport Council is working to ensure sport is accessible, inclusive, and affordable for all. Visit our website to learn more about the ParticipACTION Report Card, the Jumpstart State of Play Report, and the Lethbridge Sport Council’s work to remove these barriers to sport participation.
