In the deep south in 1960, we saw the voter registration drive, sit'-ins, freedom rides, and demonstrations against racial discrimination. During this period we were involved in all kinds of struggles. Many people who tried to vote were thrown off their land, so we set up the tents and we had tent cities in three or four places. We moved to independent political parties and freedom organizations; we won some elections and we lost some, most iirportantly we continued to struggle. In

the cities in the south we struggled against discrimination in hiring and in housing.
