was a Puerto Kican who was in the spanish army, but saw spain for what it was, the enemy of his people. He joined the revolution in México in 1821, then left to fight spaniards in Columbia. Miren a Hawaii. Se parece mucho a Puerto Rico; una Nación isla, de personas del Tercer Mundo. Hawaii es un

Con un grupo, los ricos, exprimiendo a los pobres hasta

secarlos. Cada uno^ estadidad, ELA e independencia, esta'^ basado en el capitalismo. Y si en realidad lo miramos, el capitalismo es el verdadero enemigo. Un sistema de competencia inmoral que cifra todo el poder alrededor de el

todo poderoso dólar; un sistema que cría corrupción. adicción a la droga, mala vivienda, racismo y violencia insensata. El capitalismo construye los caseríos y los

tanguitos. El capitalismo tiene que ser destruido.

Esta es una de las cesas que rompe en pedazos los otros

Poor people realize what the rich people have done to us, and now it is the poor people's turn to control ourselves. But rich people and the traitors they pay to work for them, like barman badillo, will not give up so easily. Right now, these people - the enemy - are trying to figure out ways to stay in control.

Everybody, the poor and the rich, agraes that the so-called commonwealth status cannot last much longer. It is a míddie of the road situation brought forth by munoz marin

and Washington d.c. to cool out the effects of the Natlonalist Party around 1950. Now this middie of the road attitude wonT last; our people are demanding change. The island has to go one way or the other.

One group among the enemy is pushing for statehood.

Mentally, we have been all messed up. That is why some of us actually think that the gringo is everything, and we are nothing. Some of belíeve that the gringo is right and spics are wrong. Where do we get this idea from? From the gringo, in schools, on the radio, on t.v., In the movies, everywhere. So some of us think that to be part of the united states would really be great. But if we look at the u.s. closer, it ¡s a crumbling mess that people all over the worid, even inside the u.s., hate. Why be a part of a crumbling mess?

Some people, good people, who want to get the enemy (and all their military bases) out of Puerto Rico calí for "independence!" This could mean a lot of things, like it does for the people of the Philllpines. At one time, the u.s. used to run the Phijlipines directiy. A growing movement spread to get the yanquis out. The yanquis made a big thing of leaving and having electlons where Filipinos ran for office. Tne yanquis said, "The Phillípines are now independent." A Black man in amerikkka who was a slave, Frederick Douglass, once said "The quickest way to enslave someone is to give them the vote and cali them free." In other words, nobody gives you freedom. You fight for it. amerikkka fought britain to be free. Israel fought to be free. right now, Vietnam is fighting to be free.

A lot of good people are into this thing about the vote, about voting for independence. There Is a whole political Party, Partido Independentísta Puertorriqueño (PiP), that urges people to vote. Their President, Rubén Barrios, has gone to jail for his desire for independence. But the enemy is not really bothered by this. In fact, if the kind of action that happened ¡n Rio Piedras March 11 continúes, the u.s. may go along with the independence Une, the vote, the whole thing.

How can we win freedom by voting? That's like asking the enemy,"Uh, could we~please be free?"

Why should the u.s. ever totally leave Puerto Rico on its own? Borinquen is the fifth largest buyer In the worId of u.s.

So if statehood is not the answer, if commonwealth is a

fraud, what's left? Well, all those things, statehood, commonwealth, and Independence are political systems.

They have to be based on an economic system, and they are : capitalism. One group, the rich, suckirig the poor dry. Each one, statehood, commonwealth, or independence, is based on

capitalism. And if we really look at it, capítalísm is the main enemy, that system of dog-eat-dog, all power to the almighty dolíar. That system that breeds corruption, drug addiction, bad housing, racism and senseless violence. Capitalism buílt the caseríos and the Fanguito. Capitalism must be destroyed.

That is the one thing that tears the three other arguments for Puerto Rico's future to places. The other thing is, are we willing to fight to be free? Can wé fight, day after aay, taking the defeats to go for final victory? Can we disarm the fuerza choque and natíonal guard with arms of our own?

These are the two keys to the question. In place of capitalism, we ask for socialism. Socíalism means that the

means of producing goods, the factories, plants, and companies, and the means of distributing tthese goods, like railroads, stores, ships, and planes, must be owned by the people, the people who are now poor. And to do this, we must fight, a long, hard war.

What is thé alternative to statehood, commonwealth, or independence? It is Natíonal Liberatíon, the Freedom of the

Nation. Freedom from being*owned by somebody, freedom from hunger, freedom from amerikkka and capitalism.

This is what we must do to live. We cannot go halfway (independence), we must go all the way (liberatíon), Together, as a people, we must shout
