Although to most sisters in the women's house of detention, there is littie practica! difference in bails of $100,000, $10,000, $1,000 and $100. A large amount of women are being detaíned at amounts ranging from '$100 to $1,000. Simultaneously, a great dea! of the charges accompanying these bails, are what wé shall refer to as survival (or defensiva) offenses. This means-that these

charges stem from acts which, íf successful, would Kave eased some of the economíc burden of the sister, thus elimínating any

need to steal, prostitute, con, stick up or sel! marijuana or drugs.

Obviously the probiem, from the beginning, was an economíc need thus we have a political contradiction. When the trained mercenary (pólice) discovered this act of defense, he at no time inquired of the sister, why she feit such a compulsión to risk death or imprisonment, for such a small act.

Pero eso no explica lo bastante porque escogieron a Carlos Feliciano; ni siquiera estaba activo en esos momentos en el Partido

Nacionalista.

History demands that there be such a party.

The Young Lords Party is the child of the Nationalist Party. The Nationalist Party was based on nationalism, on the passion for freedom. We began this way in 1969, as the Young Lords Organization (in January of that year in Chicago, in July in New York City). then we were a passiondte, nationalist movement for the liberation of all Puerto Ricans. but as we struggled, as we grew, we knew that it would take more effective methods to deal with the

First, how is a vanguard party defined—why does it exist?

The conditions that people Uve under give rise to a people's movement, creating a vanguard. For 72 years. Puerto Ricans have struggled against the united states. Before that it was

spaln. Batanees and the patriots of Lares showed an example of dealing with spain. In 1868, they were the vanguard. They took an action that put them at the head of the Puerto Rican struggle for liberatíon.

The first political party to do this was the Nationalist

Party. From the 1920's through the early 1950's, they showed that they were in the front of our people's struggle—while at the same time having roots among the people.

"How does a- party do this?" Well, what is a party? A party, a revolutionary party, is a disciplinad-organization made up of members who orgahíze different parts of the nation against the enemy. A revolutionary party is based on a political platform and program which outline its method of

achieving liberation. A party is broad enough to cover everything that our people do to live—school, hospital,

workplace, parks. The party provides leadership, protection, and security and gets its, strength from the people it organízes. How successful a party is depends on the support it gets from the people. If most people, or a sizeabie number, support its actions, then that party is a vanguard, or leading party.

Any party that does not have the support of its people ís jive and will die. Such a party exists in a vacuum and taiks to

itself and a few friends (they then calí themselves "the movement")

In short, ain't nobody defines a vanguard but the people.

The people cast their vote in the street, and the worid knows that is their choice.

In the 1940's, many Puerto Ricans'caníe to the united

states, lured by tales of easy riches. Finding instead hard times, one-third of our Nation now "exists" in the u.s. The

Young Lords Party aróse in 1969 out of this suffering. We are

think in terms of a scientific analysis. Scientífic analysis means that we study various theories in the Party so that we can evolve a new, unique Puerto Rican theory that comes from the Puerto Rican experience. The science part comes in because we develop a routine for attacking our work;outof this routine, revolutionary principies are formed which live on íonger than any of us. Analysis is the method of the

Young Lords' madness. Before moving into a situation, we check out its aspects and consequences. This scientific analysis is the line of distinction, of growth, between the YLP and the Nationalist Party.

This, then is the Young Lords Party, a revolutionary party. We are the Peopie's Party. Our actions show this to be true—Lincoln Hospital, Peopie's Church in New York and

In May, aiso, we structured ourseíves as a democratic centralist party. This means that in our party, there is a democratic process at each leve! of a centralized chain of command. Thus, all new decislons start with the general membership and are finalized at the top. The Central Committee and all officers are therefore responsible to the people under them. We can't trip out and decide to support trees simply because the Central Committee feeis like it. In military matters, however, the party becomes totally centralist, and all decislons are made from Central Committee on down.

Otro acto pasional que fue continuado por el intento de asesinato del presidente truman por Ospar Collazo y Griselio Torresola. Un acto pasional como fue el tiroteo en la casa de representantes en 1954 donde actuaron Lolita Lebrón y sus

camaradas. En 1967 tuvimos dos dias de pasión en El Barrio (los periódicos lo llamaron un "riot"). Cuando llego el tercer dia, los puercos ganaron el control.

La pasión es buena, es una cosa sana. Nosotros debemos sentir un odio intenso contra todos las cosas amerikkkanas.

But if we look at these articles closely, we can see that in evéry article, the author deals oniy wíth what's been happening inside the concentcation camps for men. No attention has been paid to our sisters who are being held

En unos cuantos meses se anuncio un frente unido de todas los organizaciones

patrióticas contra batista. Poco tiempo después el Che y el gran Camilo Cienfuegos marcharon hasta el centro de Cuba, en Las Villas, y atacaron la ciudad de Santa Clara. La dictadura de batista se esbaba derrumbando por sí sola alrededor del puerco dictador. El

dia de ano nuevo de 1959, batista escapo de Cuba con todo el dinero que pudo encontrar y el 2 de enero de 1959, el ejercito rebelde entro triunfante a la Havana. El pueblo habia triunfado y Fidel Castro, Raúl Castro, Che Guevara, y Camilo Cienfuegos eran los líderes de una sociedad nueva.

11th point of our Program says, we give solldarity to our sisters and brothers around the worid who fight for justice and are against the-rulers of this country.

The Women's Bail Fund was started a short time ago with the purpose of bailing out sisters who are not involved in the "movement" and who have bail less than $500. So far, they have been able to raise

$6,000 and will continué to raise more. At

para que estas hermanas puedan recibir mejor trato. La única manera de educar es comunicar. Necesitamos ayuda en todas estas areas. Necesitamos dinero, empleos decentes,

consejos, sellos, papel, presión revolucionaria sobre la administración de las prisiones y

ayuda para las hermanas que eran adictas cuando fueron arrestadas. Necesitamos ropa,

vivienda, camas, toda y cualquier cosa.

Necesitamos gente que nos ayude a convertir esta idea en una realidad revolucionaria.
