The leadership of this school has clearly done a sterling job and are now continuing with this ground-breaking project.” Chetty said it was unfortunate that the education system did not have enough of a budget to do more. “While we would love to assist, we know it is vital we form these relationships with corporate partners. Solarpowered computer lab opens KAVEEL SINGH “Today we have managed to set up the computer lab and will have pupils and teachers utilising this asset. It could one day spawn a group of professionals who will become successful and perhaps do the same and give back.” Michaels said he realised setting up computer labs throughout the country was not easy. “There are variables such as infrastructure and planning to consider. How can you build a computer lab when the school has no windows or proper walls? These are some of the challenges we are facing.” Poynting representative Ivy Matlawa said tech and skills development was a priority for her company. “We are glad to have contributed this at a level we know will develop pupils, teachers and even the community. We hope to partner more often with these types of projects.” Principal Mr. B. Adam thanked guests and sponsors. “Many of you have commended us and we are thankful, but we thank you and our greater community for giving us so much to make this vision a reality.” Circuit manager Dr. LP Swartz said he was very impressed with the leadership of the school. “It needs to be noted that the community and the leadership at the school have done much to provide a better education for the pupils here today. “This lab is the first of its kind in over 600 of the schools in the Pinetown district and that is an accomplishment of note. “People forget our current government incurred national debt from the apartheid government. “This is why we cannot afford to assist the essential services in our country. Our corporate partners come into play here and this school is a perfect example of how it should work.”

HE battle is on for the political heart and soul of President Jacob Zuma’s home province with the country’s three largest parties sending in the big guns this weekend. The DA is holding its KwaZulu-Natal provincial congress in Richards Bay where Mmusi Maimane and James Wilmot are expected to address delegates. Maimane has announced his candidacy to lead the party following Helen Zille’s announcement earlier this month that she was stepping down as party leader. James Wilmot confirmed he will challenge Maimane for the top post on Friday. Wilmot said he is like a David

After putting over the EFF view to studentsatDUTlastweek, partyleader Julius Malema also addressed a rally in kwaMashu. His comments expected to draw some fire. InthewakeofMalema’svisitandthe DA provincial congress, the ANC issued a statement headlined “ANC deploys heavyweights in KwaZulu-Natal this weekend”. The statement issued by the ANC’s provincial media officer Sicelo Khuzway said the deployment was in line withtheparty’s“mandateofbeingwith

But at the same time, the statement warned that: “Opposition parties are already feeling the winds blowing with a tsunami from afar and are probably looking for tiny spaces to hibernate”. BUFFELSDALE Secondary School pupils refused to attend classes on Tuesday morning sayingtheydidnotwantgoodteacherstoleave the school. The irate pupils were referring to the latest initiative from the Department of Education who have implemented a process called Post Provisioning Norms (PPN). The initiative aims to balance the teacher to pupil ratio at schools throughout the district and province. This means that many schools would have extra teachers that will be allocated to schools with fewer ones. Speaking to the Weekly acting CES Selvan Chetty said since the protest, staff and management managed to restore order at the school. “Pupils are now in their classes. There was a situation where pupils believed that information regarding the PPN initiative should have been given to them.” A group of pupils told the Weekly that there was little communication on the matter to them. “We have been asking about this for a while, butnotmuchhasbeenexplainedtous.Itissimplefromourperspective, wedonotwanttolose our good teachers. “There are some subjects I have improved on because of a certain teacher,” said a Grade 11 pupil. Chetty said that issues of staffing was a management issue and not a matter to consult pupils on. “Buffelsdale Secondary does not have a shortage of teachers. “I can understand pupils advocating a protest statement as a result of a shortage of teachers. But this is not so at this school. This school has more teachers than required.” Chetty added that school staff simply adhered to a a process via department circulars. School principal Dr. S.K. Singh said she would not officially comment on the matter.

HE head of Greenpeace International, Dr Kumi Naidoo, was the keynote speaker at the Buffelsdale Primary’s Soul Buddyz Club Global Warming and Climate Change Symposium at the SVET Hall on Thursday, 23 April. The chairperson of the club Nadia Khan stated that the club saw “a need to tackle this serious issue”. Dr Naidoo helped the audience understand climate change and global warming which, he believes, is the biggest challenge humanity has ever faced. “The planet is actually fine. However, if humanity continues to neglect the environment, the planet will warm up until we reach the point that we will not be able to survive. The planet will still be here, we will be gone.” He further stated that our challenge is to find ways to continue to co-exist with nature to secure the future of our children and their children. “We are running out of time and nature does not negotiate. Welfare helps xenophobic victims KAVEEL SINGH THETongaatChildWelfarelentahelpinghand to their sister organisation the Verulam Child Welfare in alleviating the plight of those affected by the xenophobic violence. Speaking to the Weekly, social worker head Jo Moodley said donations from sponsors were able to provide medical supplies, food and diapers. “However, there is still dire need for greater assistance. We have been advised that there are 2000 people affected of which 800 are children. They were temporarily accommodated at the Verulam Police Station and have subsequently moved to a Phoenix.” Moodley said the urgent requirements include baby products (clothes, food, nappies, etc.), adult clothes, toiletries (sanitary pads, soaps, toothpaste, etc), non-perishable food, blankets and tents. Items can be dropped at the Tongaat Child and Family Welfare offices. For further information please contact Miss J.J Govender or Ms D Naidoo on 032 944 1514 or 032 944 1123.

ADVERTORIAL

What to do you if you cannot pay your bills ARE you one of the 9.9 million South Africans who are unable to pay their financial obliga tions at the end of each month? Instead of burying your head in the sand or digging a deeper hole for yourself by borrowing more you can take your first step to financial freedom by entering the debt review process. This is done by contacting a registered debt counsellor and completing the relevant appli cation form which provides you immediate protection from your creditors. Rememberitisextremelyimportanttoonly use an NCR registered debt counsellor as they are regulated by the government and autho rised to renegotiate your payment terms with your creditors. Typically this can save you thousands or Rands a month by reducing interest rates or ex tending the term of your loan to relieve the pressure off while you sort your finances out. A major benefit of debt review is that once you have either repaid your loans or can make normal payments again you are removed from the debt review process and there is no black listing against your credit record. If you are struggling to meet your monthly payments and would like a free assessment of your situation, contact one of the professional consultants at National Debt Counsellors on 087 727 9728orvisititswebsitewww.national debtcounsellors.co.za Supplied.
