Metro Police questioned >> ‘You cannot break the law and ticket someone else for the same offence’ KAVEEL SINGH
A
COUNCILLOR is questioning why, in his opinion, Metro Police officers in the northernpartofeThekwini, arenotsticking to the legal traffic laws of the land. Ward councillor Michael Abrahams said he will be taking action against the “lazy and hypocritical” Metro Police officers in his neck of the woods. Abrahams called for better work ethic from the policing unit after he witnessed a Metro Police officer issuing a fine to a vehicle opposite Victoria Hospital last week. “The Metro Police vehicle was parked incorrectlyontheroadandwas blockingtrafficopposite Victoria Hospital while fining an innocent driver who had parked off the road causing no obstruction to anyone.” The incident took place on Friday, 6 March at 11.26am at the entrance to High Crescent. “I was passing by when I saw this grave injustice perpetrated by the Metro Police officer against an innocent driver who was parked off the road. “I pulled off safely on the hospital side and walked up to the Metro Police officer and asked him about his unlawful parking. “I told him he was obstructing traffic as a car entering the crescent could not do so because his vehicle was blocking the road. “I asked him who was going to ticket him [the officer]. You cannot break the law and ticket someone else for the same offence, especially if you are about to cause an accident.” Abrahams said that two days before the incident he found a Metro Police vehicle unattended in the “middle of Arbee Drive”. “One of the officers was ticketing vehicles without wearinghisnamebadge, whichisalso an offence in terms of work discipline. “The Metro traffic vehicle was obstructing a motorist who wanted to get out of his parking bay. “I witnessed the other traffic officer, the driver of the traffic van, emerging from a nearby tavern wiping his mouth and carrying two sealed bottles of cool drinks. When questioned about his unprofessional and unlawful conduct with regard to his parking, he claimed he was on a break.” Abrahams said he then told the officer he shouldhaveparkedoffthe“streetproperlyand obtained the cool drinks from a café closer to his badly parked vehicle rather than the tavern further away. “As I took out my camera to photograph him and his badly parked vehicle he sped away.” Abrahams said he obtained the force number of one of the officers and managed to get Steve Edwards, the Metro Police commander,
“I WAS PASSING BY WHEN I SAW THIS GRAVE INJUSTICE PERPETRATED BY THE METRO POLICE OFFICER AGAINST AN INNOCENT DRIVER WHO WAS PARKED OFF THE ROAD
and subsequently Parboo Sewpersad, Metro Police senior manager, to investigate the “disgraceful and unlawful conduct of the traffic officers”. “It is abundantly clear that the Metro Police officers are taking the law into their own hands in executing their duties. “I have no problem with traffic officers doing their job, but they must lead by example and park their vehicles in a safe area and go on foot correcting the wrongs of offending drivers.” However, Sewpersad said that the officer was doing his job. Responding to Abrahams in an email Sewpersad said: “It is clear from the Act (reg. 306 of NRTA 93/1996 that the Traffic/ Metro Police) was in execution of his duties, hence we cannot discipline the member for doing his job.” At the time of going to press Metro Police spokesperson Eugene Msomi had not commented on the allegations. Abrahams said he sent a report of both incidents to the city manager, mayor, the municipality executive council, the head of traffic and related departments to take corrective and disciplinary action.

“People must also take note that the police have a zero tolerance on drunken driving. If you are caught, no matterhowminortheoffenceyouwill face the full brunt of the law. We want to ensure that the community of Tongaat has a peaceful festive season.” Maharaj-Marie said the police would also be “giving special attention to the children of Tongaat during this time”. “During the holidays children seem to drop all guards on their safety and indulge in silly and playful activities, thus resulting in them becoming victims of crime. To the girls, we say, bewareofdaterape.Manygirlsgoout on dates with guys and not realise the intentions of their partners until it is too late. “Girls are even unaware of their drinks being spiked and in most cases
awaken in an unfamiliar area with no memory of the events of the previous night.” Maharaj-Marie said police wanted to send out a strong warning to all tuck shops to refrain from selling cigarettes to children. “A few have been identified and are being monitored at the moment. A warning also goes out to the owners of taverns and other liquor outlets, that they will be monitored for sale of alcohol to children. “To parents, we appeal to you to take care of the children during the holiday.Ifparentsareworkingduring the holiday, please ensure that your children are placed in the care of other responsible personsandalsoknow where your child is at all times.” Maharaj-Marie also warned that if children are caught committing an offence, they will be arrested. “We want the Easter period to be peaceful and crime-free season for the community of Tongaat and its visitors. Do not hesitate to report crime, because you may save a life. To the business houses, we appeal to you to step up on your security duringandafterbusinesshourstoensure the safety of yourselves, your customers and your property.”

On Saturday, a woman was walkingintheShopriteparkinglot area when she was approached by two men who demanded her cellphone. “The one suspect then pulled out the cellphone and they both fled. Also on Saturday were a series of housebreakings that took place on in Amanzimyana, Watsonia, Haven Crest, Gandhis Hill and Herwood. “On a further analysis of these areas it has been brought to our attention that these are the areas that are not active in their sectors. “An earnest appeal is hereby made to get involved in your area sub forum meetings. WEEKLY REPORTER
HE Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society’s 25th charity fair promises to be a festival of entertainment. The 2015 fair committee has pulled out all stops to bring you the best in entertainment. The fair which takes place from 25 March to 29 March will see an ensemble of internationally and locally-acclaimed artists.
The journey of fun and entertainment starts on Wednesday 25 March between 9am and 2pm with a programme dedicated to the senior citizens, the only charity fair to have such a programme. The Edufair programme starts on Thursday 26 March for primary school children and Friday 27 March for our secondary schools. Primary school pupils have magical science demonstrations educating and inspiring our budding scientists. In terms of entertainment, topping the bill is sevenpieceoutfitFreshlyGroundwhowillbeperforming on Saturday night. Radio quickly picked up on the single ‘Doo Be Doo’andthecatchysongwentontobecomeacrossover favourite amongst a diverse spread of stations and their listeners. ‘Doo Be Doo’ was the most played song in South Africa in 2005. DJSirBubzinandDJCindoarebilledtoperform on Friday night whilst Ghetto Squad will anchorthebuildup, includingseverallocalartists. The Saturday showpiece starts with the ever popular Tyles. The Tyles are a versatile band capable of playing all genres of music. The ace in their pocket is their dynamic lead guitarist Saiyan Naidoo who is only 10 years old. His ability to strum hits like Hotel California, Black Magic Woman and Sultans of Swing, to name a few, had grown men in tears at Sibaya. He was the showstopper at Sibaya and will definitely wow the audience at the Tongaat charity fair. DilkashShowbandiscertaintokeepthefeet tapping with their rendition of ever popular Indian melodies. This band has performed extensively both nationally and internationally. They are made of a group of versatile musicians who have had audiences on their feet. The hottest Indian comedian on SA soil, Karou Charou would be featuring two bands - the Tracks and Tyrants. This will be followed by East Coast Radio’s Damon Beard before Freshly Ground takes to the stage to belt out the classics. Sunday29Marchseesamixedbagofartists from different religious groups, providing you with a wide variety of shows, including gospel groups. The Jasantha Dance Group who hail from Tongaat with their awe inspiring dance sequences certainly promises to a be hit. There will also be a Gospel hour for the lovers of gospel music. The People’s Concert sees local groups such as Light Beings and Friends and Calebe take centre stage. Lightbeings is made up of a core of experienced musicians around who revolve other musicians (friends). These musicians who hail from Tongaat are household names, some of whom have been performing for the last 20 to 30 years. The effect of such an association can be heard in the masterful rendition of diverse genres which include contemporary pop, reggae, rock, metal, country, blues and original music. Calebe is also made up local musicians who have made our town proud. They are well known both nationally and internationally. Indian music fans are in for a treat at the Tongaat Child Welfare Charity Fair. Luxmi Stars along with Ashley Kisten and Kannan Veeramani will be performing on Sunday, 29 March. The committee said they definitely have not forgotten the children to whom their efforts at charity fair are dedicated to. The Musical Circus by X-Treme Entertainment with comedy and magic shows is fun for the entire family. There will also be fun interactive stage activity. The ever popular SAP K9 Dog Show will also be at the fair. The curtain falls on a memorable charity fair with RetroVibes Shackles. This band is made up of ex-members of the LegendaryShackleswhohailfromMountEdgecombe. They will take you down memory lane to the hey days of live bands.

Don’t call my team chokers
JUST SAYIN’ KAVEEL SINGH
I
WAS absolutely appalled at the way mainstream media houses ran the sto ry of South Africa losing to New Zea land in Tuesday’s semifinals. I do understand that in the end we did lose, but there was something more that came out of that game. TheSouthAfricanteamhadspiritthat dispelled all doubts regarding our team’s
big game mental challenges. TheTimesGroup(SundayTimes,Daily Times) were the first out of the gate with a headline using the word ‘chokers’. Yet, throughout the cricketing world and the general sporting fraternity, South Africa was hailed the true champions of the ICC Cricket World Cup. Why? Unlike Australia and India, teams infamous for their onfield mind games with childish cat calls and mocking tones, South Africa and New Zealand dis played the pure definition of sportsman ship. Both teams were respectful to each otherandmostimportantly, theybrought out the true nature of cricket. Cricket has been historically known as a gentlemen’s game, but over the last few years, it has developed into a commercial money making, entertaining machine. It has been encouraged by its detract ors to become more entertaining and it
Nude beach open letter THIS is an open letter to our province’s leadership regarding the nudist beach. Please do not change your bold and progressive decision to legalise a small sectionofdesolatebeachfornudists.Your enlightened decision created huge inter est and attention, both nationally and in ternationally and placed the South Coast region on the tourist map. Please consider the following facts: • The pastors and their likeminded supporters do not create jobs or put food
on the table. They have not been elected by the majority they claim to represent. The majority of people on the South Coast elected the ANC to represent them, provide services, facilities, etc, and grow the economy to improve the lives of all who live here. • The quickest and cheapest way to grow the economy is through tourism more tourists equals more money and growth. It is hard to believe that any nor mal business supports the pastors do
has therefore introduced shorter forms of the game to maintain a sense of excite ment. This has given a lot of young players the opportunity to make tons of money and shine overseas in the Indian Premier League (IPL). While some of us (or maybe just me) appreciate the entertainment aspect, there is something different that sport is meant to bring out in us. When I watched pieces of the game on Tuesday, especially at the end, I felt a sense of humanity a sense of real human emotion. South Africa and New Zealand were opposing teams, but the level of human kindness and respect that was given to ourteamhasnotbeenseenincricketsince theearly90swhengreatssuchasAndrew Hudson and Hansie Cronje were starting out their careers in international cricket. We get too carried away with the poli tics and “wow” factor of everything these
days. If it doesn’t have a solid marketing strategy, no one wants to hear about it. But on Tuesday, something different emerged throughout the cricketing world. Our team, the chokers of the PAST, came to the fore and showed us what this amazing game is actually about. It is about connecting with each other on a human level and understanding that we are all one playing our simple games side by side in life. They showed that there is no need to mock the other team or undertake mind game tactics. The only mind games that shouldbeworkingaretheoneswithinyou. We can all follow the example of the Proteas. I know we have an amazing team and I am proud of them. They may not be coming back home with any accolades, but to me, they have proven they are true champions of cricket. Support your team, they kicked ass!
they really not want to grow? Incidentally gay tourists spend more per capita than other sectors, so they should be welcomed maybe even be tar geted by Ugu Tourism. • There is no need to build toilet facilities on the nudist beach there are already clean, functional ablution build ings within easy walking distance (clothed of course) in the Mpenjati Re serve. Incidentally the reserve will also bene fit from the R10 per head entrance fee, which will help to keep out voyeurs and perverts looking for cheap thrills. • The small section of beach allocated to nudists has for years been regarded too dangerous to walk on because many peo ple have been mugged there. Since nu dists have been going there in numbers re cently it has become a lot safer and many locals are walking there again.
• There will also be no need to employ a beach cleaner at ratepayers’ expense because nudists clean up when they leave a beach. Many nudists would prefer the beach as it is with no buildings or cleaners. Please tell the pastors to stick to reli gion and simply instruct their flocks to stay away from the nudist beach. They should rather hold prayer meetings for im portant matters like abused women and children and corruption. They might want to start by praying for the soul of Pastor Tony Ndovela from Port Shepstone who, as reported in the South Coast Fever( Weekly’s sister publication), was recently arrested and is facing 14 counts of fraud. He was apparently the mastermind be hind the fraud scheme. Social and moral decay is here already it is not caused by allowing people to swim nude on a small secluded beach. Peter Anthony
Political meddling is destroying the SABC CONGRESS of the People (COPE) condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the hijacking of the SABC by therulingpartyinorder, asmanypeople are suggesting, to make it ostensibly into a propaganda machine. The Minister of Communications, similarly, is becoming the unabashed Minister of Propaganda. Theministeristhepoliticalheadof the public broadcaster. She needs to ensure compliance with its mandate. By all appearance, she is doing the opposite. Together with chief executive officer, whose suspension the Public Protector ordered, the minister is using strong-arm tactics to achieve party political objectives. This is completely unacceptable to COPE. If there is any truth in newspaper reports quoting her as saying that she could not act against COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng because “Baba loved him so much”, or words to that effect, we surely have a constitutional crisis on our hands. Anyway, a lot is happening every day confirming our fear of the ruling party tightening its grip on the SABC. TheSABCisnolongeranauthentic publicbroadcaster, butincreasinglya propaganda machine for the ruling party. We believe that in order to restore the credibility of the SABC, it is imperative for political meddling in management or its financial matters or its editorial interference to end immediately. COPE calls upon civil society organisations such as the SAVE OUR SABC coalition and others to raise their voices against this unacceptable situation within the SABC. Things have come to a sorry pass and the time for all of us to stand up and be counted is now! Dennis Bloem

WEEKLY REPORTER DEBT review is a simple process designed to assist individuals who do not have enough money each month to pay their creditors. The simple test of whether you are eligible for debt review is if your income exceeds your expenses every month and you either do not pay all your creditors, or you borrow money to pay your bills. If the above applies to you, you can contact an NCR registered debt counsellor who confirms whether you are over indebted and then can put you under debt review.

Opel Mokka debuts in South Africa this month.
PHOTO: SOURCED
THE new Opel Mokka, the automaker’s first sub-compact SUV, will make its South African debut at the end of March. The new SUV follows the launch of its Adam and Corsa siblings earlier in 2015. The Mokka range comprises two trim levels - Enjoy and Cosmo - and a choice of six-speed manual or auto. Poweringthefrontwheel drive SUV is a 103kW/200Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Christopher Cradock, Opel brand manager at GMSA, said: “The new Opel Mokka is an exciting addition to the Opel portfolio and follows the Adam and Corsa as an adaptable lifestyle option. “The vehicle’s high levels of quality, driving aids and safety technology, as well as versatility, place the Mokka firmly at the top of its segment. It is aimed at people who have an active lifestyle and a taste for adventure. “In this regard it is perfectly matched to the aspirational lifestyles of the target groups but more than that it offers a quality alternative to those customers who live urban lifestyles and fully appreciate the high seating position, extra space, versatility and go-anywhere nature of an SUV.” - Wheels24.
