Possibility of no water in two years KAVEEL SINGH PART of the north and eThekwini could run short of water in just two years if rainfall trends continue and nothing is done to augment supplies. KwaZuluNatal’schiefdirectorofwater and sanitation Ashley Starkey said this at a presentation at the launch of National Water Week last week at an Umgeni Wa ter hosted event at Hazelmere Dam in Verulam. Starkey presented a “water balance” scenario for the Umgeni water system, which considered the impact of planned projects and demand trends. “Water has no substitute and the prov ince is facing a drought, so the situation is urgent,” Starkey said. The Umgeni system provided about 350 million cubic metres of water ayear,augmentedbyjustlessthan50 mil lion cubic metres from the Spring Grove Dam. With demand now at 400 million cubic metres, it means that there is just enough water. By 2017 the areas fed by the system could face a shortterm deficit. By 2019 treated effluent water would come on tap, increasing supplies to 430 million cubic metres a year. Desalination of sea water on the North Coastseemstobeexpectedtofurtheraug ment supplies from 2023. The Smithfield Dam augmentation scheme in 2029 will further strengthen water security in the province. Starkeyurgedpeopletousewaterspar ingly.

>>VIDEO:

“Last year at this time, the Hazelmere Dam was sitting at 97% capacity, but is now at 46%. That is half of its capacity. Low rainfall will continue the trend,” he said. Earlier this year, the dam was sitting at 34.6 percent and water was predicted to run out by August. In April, an emergency pumping scheme from the Tongaat River was com missioned at a cost of more than R30 million. Umgeni Water’s chief executive Cyril Gamede said the organisation had a short and a longterm view, extending to 2030. “We will plan longterm water resour ces adequacy; establish a water demand management business unit to address high water loss, and proactively plan and build new bulk regional water schemes while continuously investing in operations and maintenance.” Nonrevenue water lost through theft or leaks also featured in the discussion. “The national estimate is 36.8 percent. Rural municipalities have higher usage than metros and urban municipalities and the volume of water in South Africa was 1 580 million cubic metres per annum, which equated to 30% of total water sup ply. “ This is more than 3.5 times Umgeni Water’s annual supply and the estimated value of this water is R7.2 billion,” said Gamede Earlier this year KZN was allocated more than R353.7 million to ease the ef fects of the drought.

ESIDENTS in the Buffelsdale, Belverdere suburbs were irate after they were left without water for hours over the past week. AtheftcablesattheNewtownreservoir resulted in the calamity. Tongaat Civic Association chairperson Jeeva Pillay slammed the theft and said it was sad that people were suffering because of this. “I think we need to first understand that although this matter has been resolved, it was done so in haste because the Tongaat Huletts Mill required the matter repaired urgently and they had their own engineers assisting. “The truth is, we would have had quiteamajorproblemifitwasnotfor them. We need the municipality to take greater measures in safeguarding our water supply.” DA councillor Brian Jayanathan said water tankers had become an issue saying some only appeared in Belverdere after midnight. “This is completely unacceptable. Firstly, we should not have had this kind of theft. Politics needs to take a back seat and we all need to help each other. I was up till around 2.30amatonestageensuringpeople received water from the tankers. This is out of control.” People from the area took to Tongaat Facebook pages expressing their displeasure and how they were affected.

Sashni Mundree said tankers came the road above hers, but never to their street. “We waiting till 11pm. No information was given and it only came in theafternoonwhichisnotaverynice thing. Very upset about this.” Anesh Maharaj blamed the “criminalelementsinthistown”that have a “free ride”. “The policing in this town is minimal to almost nothing, the fact that they had time to steal water pipes and electrical cables indicates that they are not afraid because of the lack of policing. I think that we need more visible policing from the Metro Police and SAPS to minimise situations like these. These kind of situa-

We worked with engineers from Tongaat Hulett and managed to bring supply back to the community.” Abrahams added that water tankers became an issue after some of them were redirected by other officials. “eThekwini water officials and myself had a schedule for the water tankers but they were redirected and therefore many people suffered. I urge people to understand that tankers will come to you, you just have to be patient in these types of situations.”

N angry girlfriend who stabbed and killed a woman during an altercation in Verulam on Monday was arrested a few kilometres from the scene by private security company Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa). The suspect is believed to have reacted in rage after discovering unproven rumours that her boyfriend, who she has two children with, was having an affair with the victim. Speaking to the Weekly, Rusa head Prem Balram said the suspect had waited for the victim at an intersection with intent to confront her over a rumour that her partner had a relationship with her. “During the confrontation the suspect pulled out a knob kerrie and as-

saulted the 28-year-old victim who was on her way from her job at a stationery factory. The victim then picked up a pole to defend herself. At thisstagethesuspectdrewaknifeand stabbed the victim on her left leg. The suspect then fled then scene.” While paramedics attended to the victim, officer Claude Munien tracked the suspect four kilometres from the scene and arrested her. According to Balram the victim had bled profusely as she lay in a pool of blood. Paramedics confirmed that the female was stabbed on her femoral artery and bled out quickly. An Okapi knife, a pole and a knob kerrie were found at the scene of the crime. Balram said that the victim was stabbed in view of hundreds of people who were leaving the industrial area

Armed robber opens fire in butchery WEEKLY REPORTER AN armed man was thwarted by a private security company after he attempted to shoot a guard inside a busy Verulam store. The incident, which occurred on Monday afternoon in the Verulam CBD, saw several shoppers and bystanders running for cover after an armed man opened fire inside a busy butchery. The suspect and his two friends had entered the butchery and behaved suspiciously, according to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) head Prem Balram. “Upon exiting the pay point without purchasing any items, the suspects approached the security guard whose duties included checking all items and receipts and became violent. When a second security officer employed by Rusa intervened the suspect then drew a 9mm pistol and opened fire inside the busy store. “He then chased the security guard inside the store who had taken cover behind a counter. “The armed suspect then picked up the spent bullet cartridge and left the store. Reaction officers responded to the call confronted the armed suspect outside the store and arrested him, recovering a 9mm pistol and ammunition.” Balram said callers stated that an armed suspect was inside the store and shooting at customers. “We surrounded the place within minutes,” said Balram. A 9mm Taurus pistol, three magazines, 31 rounds of live ammunition and a knife were found in his possession. Balramsaidthat25hallowpointandsixfull metal jacket rounds were found in his possession. A spent 9mm cartridge that was picked up from the scene was also found in his pocket. Balram said that the suspect was taken to Verulam SAP and charged for attempted murder. ERULAM residents are asking for speed calming measures after an 11-year-old was knocked down and killed on Inanda Road near Trenance Park in Verulam on Friday. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) head Prem Balram they attended to 18 accidents over the weekend and three people had died in theses collisions in separate incidents. In the latest incident the child was flung into a nearby bush upon impact and died instantly said Balram. Paramedicsremovedthechildfrom a ditch in a bush and made several attempts to revive him. “He was pronounced dead a few minutes later. The child showed no signs of life when he was being treated.” Balram said that a white VW Golf was found parked along side the road and according to the driver, the child had run across the road while he was passing the first phase of Trenance Park. Balram said that the driver of the VW Golf, who was a La Lucia resident, was treated for minor injuries and arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Balram added that several people have lost their lives at the R102 and M4 Jabu Ngcobo Intersection and the Intersection at Canelands and R102 near King Shaka Airport. Weighing in on the R102 accident, Arunajallam said that once again a provincial road was a matter of concern. “I think it is also important for drivers to slow down. But again, this is a provincialroadthatrequirestheattention of higher powers. I have made many requests to province to assist with speed breakers, however not much has happened.” Arunajallam said the situation would soon call for the roads to be closed. “If the province will not listen to us then we will have to close off that road and march on it until we are tended to. It is not right that so many people are dying and nothing is being done.”

I have been trying to get action from province for a long time now. Airport records electricity savings KING Shaka International Airport (KSIA) recorded a R2.7 million electricity saving over the past three years - or the equivalent of R2.7 million - which has been attributed to the deployment of energy-saving projects. The airport, managed by stateowned Airports Company SA (ACSA), identified energy-saving as one of its key business imperatives. According to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), KSIA installed an energy managementsystemwiththesupport of the National Cleaner Production Centre of South Africa (NCPC-SA), saving enough power to electrify 225 middle-income South African households for a year. With an investment of R40 0641 the estimated average payback period was 1.8 months. A reduction of 1 850 tons of carbon dioxide was achieved. NCPC-SA provided training and assessment to King Shaka staff, helping to implement an energy-management system. The airport implemented three projects over a three-year period savingatotalof1 932 576kWhestimated at a saving of R2 761 249. The airport was able to reduce its CO2 emissions by 1 850 tons. Airport spokesman Colin Nai-

doo said in a statement that “the real success behind the project was the high returns on low- or zero-cost initiatives. The airport’s financial investment was less than a fifth of the savings gained.” The energy efficient project put emphasis on decreasing lighting demand in the airport as well as improvingtheuseofairconditioning in the building. NCPC-SA senior project manager in KwaZulu-Natal Kevin Cilliers said the support of top management was critical for the programme to succeed. “Their support also includes getting employees involved and excited about energy management.” The airport joined the NCPCSA’s Industrial Energy Efficiency Project, a programme under the Department of Trade and Industry, hosted by the CSIR and funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs and the UK Department for International Development. Cilliers said that companies such as ACSA that decide to rollout energy management systems to other branches or affiliates play an important role in extending the environmental and financial benefits accrued through sustainable energy management strategies in South Africa.

Protec prep for competition THERE was much excitement as the teams participating in the Top Gear F1 in schools challenge raced their prototype cars in a mock race on Saturday, 14 March. A total of 17 teams from schools throughout KZN participated. The three Protec teams are being

sponsored by BMG, who have been long-standing supporters of the nonprofit organisation. The F1 competition is a multi-disciplinary challenge that exposes young people to the wide world of engineering in a fun way. In addition to designing the racing

cars using 3D Autocad software the teams have to submit a 20-page portfolio, give a five-minute verbal presentation and build a 3m x 2m pit display. “In addition to developing engineering skills, this project also teaches the pupils how to budget and requires good team work and communication skills,” said PROTEC manager, Marion Takis. The final race will be held at Suncoast Casino 16 May.

Physiotherapy for cervical spondylosis

Tongaat Eye Centre

C

PHOTO: SUPPLIED

A staff member operates the visual fields test machine. GLAUCOMA is a disease in which the optic nerve is damaged by high pressure inside the eye. Anyone can have glaucoma and is most common after the age of 40. It sometimes is hereditary, so family members of glaucoma patients should be examined. Vision loss as a result of glaucoma cannot be recovered, but early diagnosis and treatment can prevent further vision loss. Usually no symptoms are present, so it can only be diagnosed by a full examination.

NEWS

How is glaucoma detected? Tongaat Eye Centre is fully equipped to do a thorough screening and it is as follows: 1. Dilated fundus examination 2. Visual Fields Test 3. OCT - high resolution scan of optic nerve and retina. 4. Tonometry - to measure the Intraocular pressure in the eye. Once the diagnosis is made, the primary treatment is drops to reduce the intraocular pressure. If vision loss occurs even after regular use of drops, laser treatment or surgery may be required.

ERVICAL spondylosis is a 'wear and tear' of the vertebrae and discs in the neck. It is a normal part of ageing and does not cause symptoms in many people. However, it is sometimes a cause of neck pain. This pain arises from the discs which are situated between the vertebrae. Symptoms include neck pain, pain between the shoulder blades, radiating pain or ‘pins and needles’ felt down the arm, neck stiffness and sometimes referred headaches. A physiotherapist can show a person with cervical spondylosis how to stretch and strengthen the neck and vertebrae, improve posture and help prevent neck pain from returning. When you visit a physiotherapist, you’ll first have a complete evaluation. The physiotherapist will examine your neck and assess how well you can move your neck. You may be asked about symptoms such as pain in the neck or between the shoulder blades, pain that radiates down the arm to the hand or fingers,

or numbness or tingling in the shoulder or arm. The examination will also check your strength and reflexes. Stretch, strengthen, and straighten up There are several types of manipulations and exercises your physiotherapist can use to relieve stiffness, strengthen the area, and restore normal function of the neck. Treatments such as cold or heat application, passive mobilisation techniques to reduce stiffness, improve mobility and increase range of motion of the vertebral joints, deep tissue massage, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound may be used prior to exercise. During physiotherapy, you will practice a range of exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles that support your neck. You’ll also learn how to improveyourpostureandrangeofmotion. To help you learn proper pos-

tures, the physiotherapist might have you stand in front of a mirror while exercising so that you can see your mistakes and correct them. Necktractionforcervicalspondylosis One technique sometimes used by physiotherapists to provide pain relief and improve motion is cervical traction. Traction gently extends the neck opening the spaces between the cervical vertebrae and temporarily alleviating pressure on the affected discs. Neck traction can either be done continuously or intermittently, alternating between short periods of pulling and resting. Cervical pillows and collars for cervical spondylosis Neck pillows are designed to stabilise the neck while you sleep. However, there isn’t much research to support theeffectivenessofcervicalpillows. It’s agoodideatoaskyourphysiotherapist for a recommendation .A cervical collar may also help stabilise and realign your spine and relieve your pain. Feel free to contact physiotherapist Nerusha Perumaul for a consultation and enquire about pensioner discount rates and cash rates. The practice is contracted to all medical aids and also treats IOD cases. For more details, call them on 032 533 0075/032 811 255.
