Emergency measures to curb critically low water supply >> Pipeline construction moves ahead KAVEEL SINGH

U

MGENI Water has resolved to take drastic measures to curb the low water supply at Hazelmere Dam which supplies water to the eThekwini north region. The water parastatal said that the currentdroughtwastheworst inover 30 years. Umgeni Water corporate stakeholder manager Shami Harichunder said Umgeni Water took a decision to construct an emergency pipeline and

a temporary pump station that will transfer daily between eight million and 12 million litres of raw water from the uTongathi River to augment the resource in Hazelmere Dam in Verulam. The level of Hazelmere Dam as at 25 March was 46%, and the level has been falling consistently since February because of below-average rainfall. “Work is progressing well on this emergency scheme. Construction of the pipeline has already begun,” said

>> SE EM ON PA ORE GE 5

Harichunder. He added that thus far 50% of the site bush clearing has been completed, trenching has reached a stage of 20% completion and the laying of the pipeline requires road crossing and one river crossing, which is currently under way. Harichunder said that 1.5km of the 7,5km-long pipeline has been put in the ground. This means another six kilometres has to be completed. Commissioning of the pipeline is due on 3 May. HE Tongaat SAPS are appealing to the public to be more tolerant and “avoid being involved in assault cases”. Speaking to the Weekly, Tongaat SAPS communications officer Manisha Maharaj-Marie said many people are not aware of the repercussions of a conviction for an assault case.

The security officer contacted the Rusa control centre via radio and observed the three suspects who robbed a victim of his cards and cash. “An unmarked Rusa vehicle was despatched to the vicinity to observe the three suspects who got into a vehicle in an attempt to flee the scene. The reaction officer in the unmarked vehicle followed the suspects who were fleeing the scene in a GPregistrated silver VW Polo. Reaction officers with marked vehicles then boxed the suspects in and arrested them on the R102 between Phoenix and Verulam. An undisclosed amount of cash was found in the vehicle,” said Rusa head Prem Balram. mid-September. “The emergency scheme, once implemented, will allow water in the dam to last until the next rainfall season (an additional two months). However, it must be remembered that water demand at the Hazelmere WaterWorksmustcontinuetobekept low and that savings of 30% is still required of Water Services authorities,” he said. Harichunder reiterated that the

construction was an emergency requirement and that consumers should still use water sparingly. “While the emergency scheme will assist in augmenting water resources in Hazelmere Dam, it is not the ultimate answer to the current water shortages being experienced in the north of Durban and parts of Ilembe District that are supplied by the Hazelmere Water Works. Good rainfall is required in order to make a significant difference to the level of Hazelmere Dam.” Umgeni Water expects to pump waterfromtheuTongathiRiverforsix months, butwillstoppumpingifthere is sufficient rainfall to raise the level of the Hazelmere Dam to 70%. to supply Hazelmere Dam, the Tongaat Hulett Mill and the Tongaat Water Treatment Plant. “This therefore, means that if there isn’t sufficient water in the uTongathi River, transfer into the emergency pipeline will be stopped. “The level of the uTongathi River, like other rivers, generally drops in the winter months. In view of this situation, it is expected that the scheme will not operate for a period during winter, at this stage estimated to be about a month,” added Harichunder. He said that for the future, the

emergency scheme will assist even after the first rains in the spring and summer months. An additional plus factor of the emergency scheme is that it is there to mitigate the effects of the drought if the drought continues into the new rainfall season as well. “An additional measure that will be adopted, if the drought continues into 2016, is that flow to the North Coast will be supplemented by the Lower Thukela Bulk Water Supply Scheme, whichisexpectedtobeoperational in the first half of 2016,” said Harichunder.

The property also houses the Kiddyfiddlers crèche, which is run by Reshma.

The investigating officer on the case on Tuesday testified against the four receiving bail. He told the court Radebe had allegedly gone to the family premises with two men to collect his outstanding wages. An altercation occurred which led to Radebe allegedly being assaulted andsprayedwithteargasbyPrakash, said the officer. The policeman said while this was happening, the mother and daughter joined in the assault, with the mother using an iron pipe to hit Radebe.

According to the policeman Kelvin Moodley Pradeep was telephoned and asked to come to the premises with a firearm. Moodley said that Pradeep allegedly arrived with the intention to kill and fired three shots, one of which hit Radebe in the chest. He told the court the shooting happened on the roadside and the brothers then conspired todragRadebe’sbodytothedriveway entrance of their premises. Moodley alleged that a kitchen knife was placed next to Radebe’s hand. He also told Magistrate Chris

Mdunge that a brick, which Radebe is alleged to have thrown at their vehicle, was actually placed there. The magistrate ruled that there wasnoevidenceofteargasusedinthe fracas or of Pradeep arriving with the intention to kill. All four have denied murdering Radebe, with the brothers claiming he was shot accidentally after a melee had broken out. They allege Radebe was behaving violently and flung cement bricks at them. The matter was adjourned to May for further investigation.

The analogy of a windowless room Sibusiso Biyela

@astrosibs

D

URING a discussion I had with a pastor who wanted to understand my decision to announce my atheism, I constructed an analogywhichIthinkexplainsthedifference of opinion between him and I: The analogy of the windowless room. I was a member of a church in my township which is a 15 minute walk from my home. I had been attending the church

since 2007 and I participated in the church until I was elected youth leader last year, after holding a few important positions in the youth section of the church. My decision to leave the church and express my scepticism and atheism has come as a great shock to some including my former pastor. My atheism stems from an inherent seed of doubt for everything I have ever learned ever since I was eight or nine years old. Now, as I was trying to explain to the man of God that my scepticism is based on the lack of objective evidence for the existence of God or the validity of the Christian religion (or any religion for that matter), I was trumped by his refusal to acknowledge the facts. He explained to me how the order of the universe is evidence of the existence of a “loving creator”. He then proceeded to undo the science of astrophysics and biology

real world. In this real world that exists outside the room, there are things we know to be physical, things that are supportedbyfactsandtherearemore things that are unknown, but waiting to be discovered. The pastor understood my way of looking at things and he pointed out how it was ironic that this world view was in fact narrow minded. He reminded me how there are professionals such as medical doctors and intellectuals who are theists besides their worldly education. This forced me to change my room and put small windows on it that lets believers have limited glimpses of the real world, the world outside of blind belief. As we went our separate ways, he promised to pray for me and I nodded in appreciation. Anyway, I continued to modify the room, or at least what the occupants thought they saw.

through evolution. His facts lacked a true understanding of science and this only served to support the widely excepted idea of believers in God and practitioners of religion being close minded. This sparked an image in my mind during the discussion of a four-sided room with a roof completely disjoint from the outside room. In this room of the imagination, I conjured up a room where God exists and the walls and the roof are belief and indoctrination. Inside this room (which is neither big nor small, but merely finite in size) iswhereallthosewhobelievewithout question reside. Thisroomisasbigasthosewhoreside in it believe it to be but the room is still limited it its dimensions. Outside the room is the real world fulloffactsandwondersthatarewaiting to be discovered. Having created this setting, I put my sceptic self on the outside, in the

BUSINESS HOURS: TUES TO FRI - 10:00 TO 6PM SATURDAY - 9:00 TO 5PM SUNDAY - 9:30 TO 4PM MONDAY - CLOSED

From outside the room, the real world, the room does not in fact exist, or rather the walls that hold the inhabitants back. You see, the walls of belief, dogmatism, indoctrination and community acceptance are as real as the barriers that keep football players within the field of play. In reality, in my world of the imagination at least, these lines are drawn on the ground, and as the football players are conditioned to never cross their barrier lines, so are the believers bound by mere lines in the ground. So, there are no walls; this means the inhabitants of the non-existent room can see everything, the real world they find themselves in, but they are not allowed to cross the lines drawn in front of them. This is an imaginary world as you know and analogies can only stretch so far, but this is how I see things as they are.

Tongaat Charity Fair 2015 a SUCCESS

WEEKLY REPORTER

T

HE pupils from Protec Tongaat were treated to a very informative and helpful workshop run by Lauren Izaaks, trainer for Casio calculators, re cently. Pupils are selected to join Protec on their aca demic ability and personal drive to commit to a tough programme that requires them to give up most Saturdays and school holidays to attend ex tra lessons. All Protec pupils take physical science and pure maths for matric making the Casio work shop invaluable in showing pupils how to use their calculators effectively. The good work ethic that is instilled in Protec pupils has become evident by their excellent aca demic record and the high number of students who pursue tertiary studies. The matric class of 2014 achieved a 97% university pass rate. Thirteen of the 39 2014 matrics have received bursaries for their tertiary studies and over 75% are pursuing studies at University or Universi ties of Technology this year. “We are extremely proud of our pupils who excel despite their difficult social, financial and educa tional circumstances. And we are extremely grateful to all our sponsors for touching the lives of our pupils and giving them hope for a bright future,” said Protec manager Marion Takis.

Accounts manager breaks free from debt burden - case study SELENA’S financial worries started when her car was stolen from outside her work. The insurance paid her onlyR16 000.Sheboughtanewcarandspentalmost her entire salary paying the car loan. She relied on credit cards and store cards to pay for other expenses, including petrol. Because she could not service her debt, more interest piled up and eventually her debt was out of control. In the end her total debt came to R161 353. Her phone started ringing off the hook as the banks hounded her for money and she was too scared to take any calls. She was terrified the banks would repossess her car or send the sheriff to attach her furniture. The thought of the disgrace and the embar rassment this would cause her children kept her awake at night and she became more and more de pressed. She was lucky to opt for debt counselling as this prevented her creditors from taking legal action

against her and it provided an opportunity to negoti ate new repayment terms. If you compare what she pays now, R3062 per month, versus what she was paying R8 073, it would have been impossible to carry on servicing her debt. Today, she can honestly say that undergoing debt counselling with National Debt Counsellors was the best thing that could have happened to her. If you are struggling with your finances contact one of its professional advisers on 087 727 9728 for assistance. • Every individual case is different and may yield different results.

‘Passion Play’ at the Playhouse

T

HE Durban Catholic Players' Guild presents the 14th Durban Passion Play at the Playhouse Drama Theatre which started on 1 April running until 19 April. The Passion Play strives to restore the true meaning of Easter. It is an epic-scale dramatic production depicting Jesus' passion, covering the final period of his life from his visit to Jerusalem to his execution by crucifixion. It is performed by a large cast who volunteer their time and skills as part of their Lenten preparations. The play involves seven months of commitment from a 150plus cast who receive no remuneration. Thecastcomprisesaninter-denominational group of diverse people who vary in age from toddlers and teenagers to young adults and the more mature. The play is directed by Dawn Haynes and Tanya Conradie: "We have many familiesparticipatinganditiswonderfultosee grandparents, children and grandchildren all involved. This year we also have special-needs people in our cast. These families are a shining example of a family that prays together and are an inspiration to us," says Haynes. The first Passion Play in Durban was performed in 1952, when the mayor and community of Oberammergau in Bavaria granted special permission to the Durban Catholic Players' Guild to stage an abridged version of their world-famous Passion Play. What was first enacted in 1634 in OberammergauwasusedinDurbanasameans of celebrating the centenary of the arrival of the missionary Oblate priests of Mary Immaculate, who arrived in South Africa in 1852. That first play, enacted at the Greyville Racecourse, was so successful that Durban's Father Noel Coughlan travelled to Bavaria to gain permission for the Durban version of the play to be staged every five years. The Oberammergau village fathers obliged, seeing the play as a means of witnessing to the larger population of southern Africa and Durban would become the "Oberammergau of Africa". It has now been staged in Durban every five years for the past 63 years. The Durban Passion Play was staged at the Greyville Racecourse for many years, beforemovingtotheDurbanCityHalluntil 1997.Morerecentlyithasbeenperformed at the Playhouse. There will be 24 performances in the Playhouse Drama Theatre. One of the highlights is a special performance for the hearing impaired on Sunday 12 April at 2:30pm, when the performance will be signed. Block bookings are available for those who want to book the entire theatre for fundraising. For more information, contact Haynes at dmhaynes@webmail.co.za Public booking is at Computicket. - Supplied.

Mediclinic Victoria hosts pregnancy awareness event

IRSCH’S Ballito held their monthly networking session recently. Banting was the hot topic under discussion. Guest speaker for this month was Banting Buddies coach Liesel Roebert who gave a talk on the secret to the banting diet. Banting has been defined as a low carb, highfatwayoflife, andLieselexplained that not only does it help to control weight, it also improves ones overall well-being as it assists in improving sleep, increases energy and even helps to whiten teeth. One of the points that was stressed wastheremovalofsugarfromthediet as, for many reasons, this is the worst thing you can put into your body. Hirsch’s Ballito’s Lucky draw winner was Bridgette Allan who won a copy of the ‘’At Home with Hirsch’s’’ cookbook. Liesel Roebert and Bridgette Allan.

Help avoid a blood shortages WEEKLY REPORTER

A

S the holiday break in April approaches, one knows that traditionally this is a time when there are several road accidents, which adds to the daily demand for blood. It is also a time when blood collection is already difficult. This comes about with regular

school, tertiary institutions and business blood drives being virtually impossible to assist in sustaining a safe blood stock level to meet the demand. In times like this we have to appeal to donors to make their way to one of the closest blood drives or donor centres. Unfortunately when the holidays

arrive, the demand does not decrease, and approximately 3 000 units of blood is still needed by patients daily and for each day we are unable to make this target, the total units of blood that is available depletes. "We understand that many people will be busy or going on holiday over this period, but it only takes about 30

More desperate pensioners hitting the casinos >> Gambling environment creates a safe cocoon CHELSEA PIETERSE

ITH some pensioners having little or nothing to do during the day, “gambling grannies” are becoming acommonsightatcasinosalloverSouthAf rica, and KwaZuluNatal is no exception. Clinical psychologist Clive Willows said manypeopledonotpreparepsychologically for retirement. “Oftentheiridentityandpurposeissoin tegrated with work that they struggle to de fine themselves, or find a purpose when work ends. “The psychological lure of gambling is oftendrivenbyaninherentsenseoffairness. “Therefore those who believe they have worked hard and not been adequately re warded, or perhaps dealt with unjust hard ship, believe that they deserve to win, and that, somehow, the scales will be balanced in their favour,” he said. He said those who have struggled in life

are the most vulnerable to be driven by such an unconscious, but ultimately illogical, drive. “The gambling environment usually cre atesasafecocoon, andenablesawithdraw alandretreatfromthedemandsofone’sen vironment and the internal tensions of discontent and regret — which are often characteristics of depression in older folk,” he said. Pietermaritzburg and District Council for the Care of the Aged social work manager JoAnne StevensO’Connor said although they did not deal with many people who ad mitted to gambling problems, a few clients had admitted to gambling addictions. “One gentleman admitted he worked for himself and would sacrifice work time to hit the casino. “Money that would have comfortably have bought him a house and replaced his ageing car was spent at the casino leaving him almost destitute.

“So obsessed would he become that he would seek to borrow money in the middle of the night to play one more hand.” She said sometimes placing a person in an old age home or retirement village could help as they provide a structured environ ment for people whose lives have become unmanageable. “The cost of care is such that people with limited income have little money left over to spend on gambling or other addictions,” she said. Casino Association of South Africa spokesperson Charl Faurie said experience indicates that the elderly are more likely to visit casinos in offpeak times. “Unfortunately the term pensioner tendstocreatetheimpressionthatallelder ly people live a handtomouth existence, existing from one monthly pensioner’s cheque to the next,” he said. “Thelattercategoryofpensionerswould automatically fall outside the desired LSM and casinos’ primary segmentation and therefore would not be specifically target ed.”

SA’s Noah to take over top U.S. show JODY NEL TREVOR Noah (pictured) is believed to be on the shortlist to present top American news satire programme The Daily Show. Longtime presenter Jon Stewart has an nounced that he will step down this year. South African comedian Noah joined the programme in December as a “senior inter national correspondent”. According to entertainment industry magazine Variety, Noah (31) is being in creasingly seen as the successor to Stewart.

Severalseniorandlongstandingcontrib utors to the show have already indicated they do not want to step into Stewart’s job. Among them are John Oliver and Ste phen Colbert, who started on The Daily Show and now have their own successful shows, with Colbert taking over The Late Show from David Letterman in September. Stewart announced in February that he will step down some time after June from the show he has presented since 1999. An informed source said it is not a done deal that Noah will inherit the show, and

host network Comedy Central declined to comment. Although Noah has only been on The DailyShowforfourmonths, heisanotanew face to American audiences. He was the first comedian from Africa to appear on the two top late night talk shows, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Late Show with David Letterman. He regu larly tours the U.S. and has also been aired on the Showtime channel. Noah is on tour in the Middle East and could not be contacted for comment.

weeklywheels Safety paramount on N3 over Easter EMERGENCY services on the N3 toll route claim to be on high alert already for the Easter weekend, but point out that crash avoidance is the responsibility of every driver. N3TC is part of the highway that links industrial Gauteng with the holiday city of Durban and the northandsouthsectionsofcoastal KZN. Reckless driving, N3TC said, was still a major cause of crashes on its route. During 2014 most involved lost vehicle control followed by a roll, rear-ending, and vehicles simply going off the road. Speed, aggressive driving and unroadworthy vehicles were also to blame. Strangely - given general perception - the N3TC reported wet weather was the safest time to use the highway. Only 7.7% of crashes were reported in rain, 8.4% in overcast (cloud, mist) but 80.4% when the weather was clear. The N3 toll route runs between Heidelberg in Gauteng and Cedara in KZN and a close watch is kept on traffic patterns, driving behaviour and crash statistics the last showing that Easter crashes in 2014 were, N3TC claims, down by 47.4% from 2013; fatal crashes decreased by 83.3% and the number of dead in 2014 was half that of the previous year. N3TC’s spokesman Andy Visser said: “These statistics show a positive trend but we are very aware that the risks increase exponentially when traffic volumes are high.” Christmas travel, for instance, carries a lower average roaddeath rate than a normal working day. Nevertheless, N3TC is asking Easter road users to exercise extreme caution during Easter and

other holiday periods. Visser again: “Drivers are advised to plan their trips; be aware of road and weather conditions ahead; be patient and courteous; stay alert and stop regularly.” Peak traffic is expected from GautengtoKZNonThursdayApril 2 from 10am-9pm, on Good Friday from 4am-3pm. Easter Monday is expected to the busiest day with “extremely high” traffic volume towards Gauteng from 9am9pm and on Tuesday, April 7 from 1pm-6pm. Tollsters say drivers will not have to negotiate any roadwork, all lanes will be open. There will be emergency satellite stations at key locationswithemergencymedical services and police. Apartfromgeneraloperations, traffic authorities will also focus on: • Alcohol screening • Public transport compliance and search • Roadworthy compliance • Sector policing and patrolling • Blue and red-light visibility • Pedestrians •Vehiclescausingobstructions Over and above the traffic authorities, the police and ambulance services are already on stand-by. More emergency support will be provided by: • N3TC route patrol team • 13 Imperial iPledge emergency vehicles provided by Europcar • SAPS motorcycles on Van Reenen’s Pass • Community Medical Services providing medical support and emergency response teams on Van Reenen’s Pass • Angels in Motion teams to helpwithpost-crashcareoftheinjured and their families • BMW roadside assistance teams Visser said road users could get traffic and weather information 24/7 from the N3TC Route Control Centre on 0800 63 4357 (0800 N3 HELP) or download the N3TC Mobility app to a smartphone or tablet, or follow Twitter on @N3Route. - Wheels24.

New Ranger bakkie for SA unveiled

The new Ford Ranger 2015 bakkie.

F

ORD has unveiled its updated Ranger bakkie in Thailand and its sporting de sign tweaks throughout, improved en gines and the automaker’s latest technolo gies. The new Ranger will be launched in South Africa in the fourth quarter of 2015. Specification and prices will be confirmed closer to launch. At the front, it has a new trapezoidal grille, newdiodheadlights, tweakedbumper and bonnet. The Ranger can wade through 800mm of water, has 230mm ground clearance, 28 degree approach and 25degree departure angles. For lowspeed torque or additional downhill braking drivers can engage the lowrange 4x4 and activate the electronic rear differential. The Ranger has a towing capability of up to 3500kg. Driving assistance technologies: • Lanekeeping alert helps prevent the driver from unintentionally drifting out of a lane when driving at highspeeds. • Adaptive cruise control makes use of radar sensors to maintain both a preset speed as well as a preset distance from the vehicle ahead. When the system detects a vehicle

ahead, it decelerates automatically to maintain a safe distance. •ForwardalertGivesdriversavisualand audible warning when the gap to a vehicle ahead drops below a safe distance. The sys tem also charges the brakes. • Park assist uses sensors to detect ob stacles and provide audible warnings when the vehicle approaches obstructions at low speeds. • Tyre pressure monitor alerting drivers when tyre pressure is too low • Electronic stability programme with rollover mitigation and trailer sway • Driver impairment monitor uses a camera and onboard sensors to detect if the driver is drowsy. If the system notices signssuchasdriftingontheroadandsudden corrective steering inputs, the system warns the driver with signals. Australia are on top of the world again >> ‘We played for our little brother Philip Hughes’ WEEKLY REPORTER

ICHAELClarkescoredahalfcentu ry in his final One Day International for Australia which helped his side win their fifth ICC Cricket World Cup by de feating New Zealand by seven wickets at the MCG in Melbourne on Sunday. “We played this tournament with 16 playersinoursquad–everyoneknowsthat – and we played this tournament for our little brother, Philip Hughes,” stated Clarke at the postmatch presentations in refer ence to Hughes who died while playing firstclass cricket in Australia. Brendon McCullum had won the toss and elected to bat first but New Zealand were bundled out for 183 in 45 overs with Australia replying with 186 for three in 33.1 overs to clinch the 2015 title. Clarke, who announced his retirement from this format a day prior to the tourna ment final, struck 10 boundaries and one six in his 72ball 74. Clarke and Steve Smith shared in a 112 run stand for the third wicket after Trent Boult (100401) had removed Aaron

David Warner did not let the early wicket bother him as he struck seven boundaries off 46 balls before holding out to Grant Elliott on the square leg boundary off Matt Henry (9.10462) for 45. The fall of Warner’s wicket gave the New Zealanders some hope, but Clarke and Smith batted superbly and struck the boundaries when needed and rotated the strike with aplomb.

won the toss and elected to bat first. Richard Wiessing and Khalipha Cele put on an opening stand of 38 runs for the first wicket in just four overs before Cele (14) was caught at point, off the bowling of Aaron Pillay. Sashlen Reddy and Muthusamy took the tally from 90/3 in the 12th over to 148/4 in the 18th over before Reddy (23) was clean bowled by Dillon Rautenbach. Muthusamy and Gareth Wiessing smashed29runsinthelasttwoovers. UKZN posted 177/4 in their allotted 20-overs. Man-of-the-match Muthusamy notched up a brilliant half-century (68 not out), which included nine fours and a huge six. Wiessing was unbeaten on 10 runs. Smith finished the game off by pulling Henry through square leg for four to end on 56 not out off 71 balls with just three boundaries.

The thirdwicket stand came to an end with just nine runs were needed when Clarke tried to cut a ball from Henry that was too close to his body and chopped the ball onto his stumps. New Zealand were wellset at 150 for three after 35 overs, but the man of the match James Faulkner (91363) turned the game on its head when he had Taylor caught by Brad Haddin behind the stumps for 40. Two balls later he then clean bowled Corey Anderson for a duck. Starc then returned to the attack and had Luke Ronchi caught by Clarke at first slip for a duck which left the Black Caps on 151 for six. New Zealand were not able to recover and were eventually bundled out with still five overs remaining in their innings. “What a performance from the guys, we just brought our Agame today,” said Faulkner. “Australia are deserved champions, and it is a fitting way for Michael [Clarke] to end off his career. I’m proud of my boys, the brand of cricket we have played in a friendly spirit,” said McCullum. The coach of the Australian side, Daren Lehman, who has won the World Cup as a player and a coach, said that “it was a fitting way for Pup (Clarke) to end his ODI career”. Smith, who hit the winning runs as Leh man did in 1999 said: “This was our best game. “The bowlers set it up and a big thanks to them and a huge thanks to all the fans that have supported us. It’s not every day in your life you get to play in a final at the MCG.” “It was a special feeling having Pup there, and it was good for him to end off like this – a fitting farewell,” said Smith after the game.

Fastbowling allrounder James Faulk ner was named manofthematch for his devastating spell which helped set up a sevenwicket victory for Australia in the Cricket World Cup final against New Zea land at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. The 24yearold struck on the first ball of the second powerplay in the 36th over to end a 111run fourthwicket partnership between Ross Taylor and Grant Elliott by dismissing the former with a slower deliv ery. Faulkner then removed the dangerous Corey Anderson in the same over for a secondball duck with a fast fulllength delivery. He capped his gamechanging spell by removing Elliott for 83 and finished with figures of three for 36 from nine overs. Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc was named the player of the tournament after his team beat New Zealand by seven wickets to win the World Cup at the Mel bourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. The25yearoldleftarmquickfinished with 22 wickets in the tournament, tied with New Zealand leftarm seamer Trent Boult although having played a match lesser than his Tasmanian rival. Starc bowled fast and swung the ball both ways during the tournament and his wickets came at an average of just over 10.
