UPILS from the Protec April holiday programme were kept busy with a number of activities including workshops over their rest period. “In today’s world computer lit eracy is essential and our aim is to ensure that every Protec pupil is equipped with these vital skills,” said Marion Takis, Protec Tongaat manager. Protec pupils who were not computer literate attended a be ginners computer workshop where they learned Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and the Internet. “It was a hugely enriching ex

perience for pupils to now be able to access the wealth of knowledge available through the world wide web,” said Takis. Several Grade 11 and 10 also participated in a bridge building workshop. “The aim of Protec is to prepare young people, with the interest and ability, for successful entry in to engineering, science and tech nological careers and this work shop gave the opportunity to test their skills and aptitude in engi neering concepts,” said Takis. She said that using strips of balsa wood and Pratley Quickset pupilsdesignedandbuiltabridges that could carry a heavy load. The top two teams will participate in

the SAICE KZN Schools Bridge Building Competition in August. The Grade 11 pupils also partici pated in a water conservation workshop where they learned about the scarcity of water, prop erties of water, and the impor tance of conserving this valuable resource. This interactive workshop in volved a variety of fascinating ex periments, video clips and presen tations. They also enjoyed a visit from Science Centre who conduct edpracticaldemonstrationstoex plain concepts such as Newton’s second law and acceleration due to gravity. The matrics focused on aca demic enrichment in math, physi cal science and life science. The highlight was a visit to UKZN Westville campus where they at tended informative presentations by the college of Engineering, Sci ence and Agriculture and the col lege of Health Sciences. This was followed by practical experiments in the chemistry lab to demon strate the science concepts they are studying. “These programmes are de signed to prepare our pupils for successful entry into careers that need math and science such as en gineering. As a nonprofit organi sation we are dependent on the generosity of our sponsors and it is thanks to them that we are able expose these young people to these exciting opportunities.”

to foreigners living in our country. There is no excuse for the violence and the intimidation that has stemmed from this ideological misgiving. BUT, we HAVE to start doing more. We have to realise this issue is part of a much bigger picture. A picture of poverty, frustration and anger. How does a family have any dignity in this country when they cannot defecate with some form of privacy and hygiene? We have to, as middle class South Africa, take heed of these challenges. We have power. We move a lot within our economy and it about time we stood our ground. Reform is required and a great deal needstobeputintoeducatingourpeople into the social norms we are familiar with. What has happened is nothing less than wrong, but it is time we stopped commenting and judging and start acting.

can one expect their 80-year-old granny to work after all? I believe a lack of opportunity and education has faltered the opinion of the people in our country. And the king - probably one of the laziest and most inciting individuals in our politicalspectrum-isusingthistohisadvantage. Heisusingthedesperateandthepoor and taking their frustrations and directing it somewhere very far into the past. We are Africans - all of us who inhibit this land. But the king and his cronies decide to create this massive problem. Perhaps it is a distraction to divert us fromthefactthatourpresident’spersonal homestead issues were finally coming to a head. Paranoid you might say - realistic would be my response. We, the advantaged few in our country, have to start doing more. We cannot cast judgement fully onto those who have reacted so violently and negatively

Save our souls a toilet. You have food to eat. You have warmth. You have so much. In the townships, while there are a great number of ablution facilities, it is not like the one’s you and I have. I don’t have to share the loo with a hundred other families. I don’t have to share a massive wash basin with 80 neighbours. I have my own sink. I have my own home. I live a somewhat privileged life. I’ve had this perspective for many years. And to a great extent, until these disparages are corrected, I always will. In my opinion it is due to these reasons that there is so much hate running through the veins of our people. This hate came the fore last week. Education - this is vital for me. It is something I have been given. In South Africa, the vast majority of our people do not experience college life. They barely experience school life. Because there are 14 years old who have younger siblings to provide for and how

What is reckless lending?

R140

R280

YOU often hear in the media about reckless lending by credit providers where they provide credit to you when you cannot afford the repayments. Credit is anything from a loan to purchasing furniture or clothing on account where you pay monthly instalments. The National Credit Act requires all credit providers to perform an affordabilityassessmentonyoubeforegranting youcredit.Putsimplyyoumusthavesufficientincomeavailableafterallyourexpenses to repay the debt. In many instances credit providers either do not perform an affordability assessment or “massage” the numbers to suit their requirements despite the fact you do not earn enough to make the repayments. This inevitably leads to you falling into arrears and the debt collectors’ start calling you and harassing you for payments. In many cases you borrow more money to meet the existing repayments and the debt spiral begins. Fortunately the National Credit Act provides protection to consumers who are victims of reckless lending and your debts can be written off. Registered debt counsellors are required to investigate reckless lending on your behalf and request documentation from the credit provider to confirm you were able to afford the credit when you applied. Where you could not afford the repaymentsthedebtcounsellingcanbring a case of reckless lending on your behalf and apply for the loan to be written off and repayments refunded. If you think you are a victim of reckless lending contact one of the professional consultants at National Debt Counsellors on 087 727 9728 or visit their website www.nationaldebtcounsellors.co.za.
