Rusa helicopter CRASHES >> Engine failure blamed for crash

WEEKLY REPORTER

REACTION Unit South Africa (Rusa)helicoptercrashedafter possible engine failure in Verulam on Friday morning. Air-crash investigators from the Civil Aviation Authorities visited the crash site in Coniston at the weekend to commence an investigation as to why a newly fitted engine cut off in full flight. Rusa head Prem Balram, who was the pilot in command, said that the Robinson R44 lost power to its engine when he and crew member Jerome Sumdath were flying towards the Verulam recreation grounds at around 11am. Balram commenced an emergen-

cy landing called “autorotation” and steered the helicopter away from the grounds and houses before crash landing in an open field. “The crew then crawled out of the aircraft and were located by Reaction officers and paramedics.”

then opened several parts of the engine on the scene. “Five residents in the area have come forward reporting hearing loud noises from the aircraft engine before witnessing the helicopter plummeting to the ground.” The newly fitted Lycoming engine had just 15 minutes of flight time and lostpoweronitssecondflightapproximately 10 minutes after take-off. “The engine was assembled by an engineer in Johannesburg after waiting for parts for several months from the United States. It was fitted by an aircraft maintenance organisation in Durban,” said Balram. “Investigators have arranged for thehelicoptertobetakentoanairport in Gauteng for the engine to be taken apart and establish why it lost power in full flight.”

Do your bit, support Tekkie Tax campaign

coastal

WEEKLY

C

HILD Welfare SA: KwaZuluNatal is calling on schools, business houses and the community to support the Tekkie Tax campaign on Friday 29 May. Tekkie Tax is an annual fundraising campaign for welfare organisations. During April and May members of the community, schools and business

houses will be asked to get a Tekkie Tax sticker for a R10 donation from Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza. There will be five different kinds of stickers, each representing a beneficiary sector. People will be able to choose which of the five sectors they would like to support (children, animals, education,

disability, basic community welfare) by buying one of those stickers from a sec tor of their choice. The society thanks the community for supporting the Tekkie Tax campaign in 2014. An appeal is made once again to the community to support this fundraising venture by purchasing a sticker for R10

to show which of the five sectors your heart lies. On 29 May, people will be wearing their tekkies in support of this good cause. Pupils are requested to wear their stickers to school on 29 May to show their support for Tekkie Tax. Tekkie Tax stickers are now available

Bid to protect KZN’s statues >> ‘Monuments are legacy of our painful past’ JONATHAN ERASMUS

Former Natal premier Harry Escombe statue in Durban is con sidered by Amafa KZN Heritage to be at risk amid the current wave of vandalism.

BFT Movie Rentals

ZN’S HERITAGE association is frantically trying to identify all monuments in the province which could become targets of political vandalism. Amafa has already identified 30 monuments scattered around the province and has asked all municipalities to account for monuments on their land as it scrambles to create a database. The exercise comes amid a national debate over monuments symbolising colonialism, which was sparked by students at the University of Cape Town demanding the removal of the statue of British imperialist Cecil John Rhodes. They started their campaign by throwing faeces over the national monument. Several statues around the country have since been defaced, while the Economic Freedom Fighters have openly called for and participated in the destruction of monuments. On Tuesday ANC provincial regionalsecretarySihleZikalalacalledforthe removal of all statues in the province that represent the country’s colonial and apartheid past. Zikalala said the “offensive” monumentsshouldberelegatedtomuseums only for “reference purposes for those who want to view them”. But Amafa acting CEO Lindi Msomi said she has yet to receive any communication asking them to remove a statue from a public space. Msomi added that they wouldneedcompellingrea-

sons before considering removing a monument. “It depends on the reason, but we are concerned at the vandalism of statues as they are a part of our history. We have had monuments vandalised in the past by scrap metal thieves or peoplebelievingtheyhaveburiedtreasure beneath them, but not for political reasons,” said Msomi. Amafa employees said the issue of monuments was complex, that they weregradeddifferentlyandafew, such as the John Ross statue in Durban, are on private land. Statues identified as possible targets include those of former Natal premiersHarryEscombeandJohnRobinson, as well as the statues of Queen Victoria in Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Zikalala said while the ANC could not make a judgment on every monument, it supported the idea of the removal of “contentious monuments” on principle. “The issue runs a lot deeper and reveals our society is still divided by the colour line. Blacks still feel marginalised. We believe the monuments are a legacy of our painful past and represent oppression.” Zikalala added that they should be “collected and put in the nearest museum” for reference purposes. The DA has called the destruction of monuments a “diversion from constitutionalism”. The party said in a national statement that history cannot be erased. “To place the blame for a lack of progress on statues, many over a century old, makes a mockery of the cause of true transformation in our society.”

Campaign to curb texting while driving WEEKLY REPORTER TEXTING and driving can keep your eyes off the road for as much as five seconds at a time. At 120 kph, a car would travel a distance equivalent to more than one and a half football pitches during that five seconds of inattention, making texting and driving extremely dangerous. In fact, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that you’re 23 times more likely to crash if texting while driving. Vodacom is taking a stand against texting and driving, and has today launchedW8_2send(pronouncedwaitto-send), a campaign that encourages South Africa to pledge to never text whilst driving. W8_2send aims to create as much awareness around the dangers of textingwhilstdrivingaspossible.Thecampaign, which has been specifically designed with the youth in mind, uses social media to spread the W8_2send message. “We wanted to find a way to engage as well as educate South Africans around the dangers of texting and driving. Which is why we came up with the W8_2send online game that simulates what can happen when drivers are distracted by their cellphones on the road,” said Vodacom’s chief officer of corporate affairs, Maya Makanjee. The game, which can be played at www.w82send.co.za, challenges players to manoeuvre an animated car by tilting their smartphones or using the arrow keys on their keyboard. At the same time they will have to type the answers to various questions. Once played, the game then prompts players to take the pledge to W8_2send by sharing the following message with their friends and family via Facebook or Twitter: “I’ve just promised to wait to send. Using your phone whilst driving is dangerous. Take the pledgehttp:// w82send.co.za #w8_2send”. Speaking about the launch of the campaign Makanjee said: “Most South Africans are aware that texting whilst driving is unsafe, but what they often don’t realise is just how dangerous it is. “According to Arrive Alive, studies have suggested that texting while driving is even riskier than driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. “We want to ensure our customers are aware of the risk. The W8_2send game is an engaging way to demonstrate this. Its purpose is to create a memorable experience that will make people think twice before they tweet, post or text on the road.” On top of hosting the game, the W8_2send website also has statistics around texting and driving as well as useful tips and links to apps to help make keeping the W8_2send pledge as easy as possible. “We originally launched W8_2send to our employees earlier in 2014 and from there decided to extend it to our customers. “Wearealsocurrentlyengagingwith other industry players as well as government to look at ways in which we can partner to ensure that the W8_2send message reaches as many South Africans as possible,” said Makanjee.

Integrity, Respect, Accountability, Courage

October to December 2014: 29898

An unforgiving world RANJENI MUNUSAMY ranjeni.munusamy@gmail.com

W

HAT a moment of pride for South Africa when local comedian Trevor Noah was announced as the new host of the U.S.’s top-rated satirical news programme The Daily Show. Noah has been making a name for himself internationally and debuted as an international correspondent on The Daily Show only a few months ago. Now he has moved into the big league by being named as the successor to the veteran comedic genius Jon

Stewartwhenhestepsdownlaterthis year. We have watched Noah try many avenues to advance his career, from stand-up comedy to advertising a cellular-phone network and his own late-night television talk show. Now he has reached the pinnacle of the comedy world — and at the age of 31. But alas, hours after the announcement, Noah was plunged into controversy with the U.S. media. Journalists trawled through his old tweets, projecting him as being offensive to women and Jews. He has also faced condemnation for his jokes being insulting to African Americans. It was to be expected that although The Daily Show has a huge international following, the primary U.S. audience might be hostile to a foreigner being the chief satirical commentator on American politics. Noah’s irreverence and somewhat tasteless tweets from years back

didn’t exactly help the audience embrace him. Of course, comedians have to push the boundaries, that is what sets them apart from regular funny people. But jokes about fat women are difficult to defend. The antagonism against Noah could sabotage the show’s ratings when he takes over. There is an inherent lesson about how careless actions or utterances might come back to haunt us. Take Zwelinzima Vavi, for example, who was fired as the general secretary of Cosatu recently for a string of misdemeanours. Vavi was the most prominent labour leader in post-democracy South Africa, and a dominant voice in national discourse for the 16 years he was at the head of the trade union federation. Many people expected that with his popularity and reputation, he would eventually make the leap to a

prominent position in the ANC and perhaps government. However, Vavi’s straight-shooting character and tendency to criticise corruption and failures of government made him an annoyance in the alliance. There has been a concerted effort for several years by a faction in Cosatu, the ANC and the South AfricanCommunistPartytogetridofhim. Vavi survived an attempt to oust him at the last Cosatu national congress in 2012, mostly because his popularity among the rank and file in the federation made it impossible for anyone else to compete against him for the general-secretary position. Despite the mounting hostility against him, Vavi would probably have seen out his term in Cosatu had he not made the fatal error of having sex with a junior staffer at the office. That set off a chain of events that ledtodisciplinarychargesbeinginstituted and him being suspended from

his position for nine months. Vavi’s suspension broke the tensions in Cosatu into the open and caused deep divisions between affiliate unions that supported him and those determined to expel him. Even after his suspension was declared invalid by the high court, allegations of corruption and financial impropriety piled up. Vavi has spent the last year and a half trying to fight off a range of accusations that his detractors battled to make stick. Had Vavi not lost the moral high ground through his sexual waywardness, it would have been a lot more difficult for his enemies to engineer his downfall. Everybody makes mistakes, but as Noah and Vavi discovered, a moment of carelessness can have dire consequences. The world is less forgiving of missteps the higher you are up the food chain. So either lie low or mind your step.

HASTINGS ON FOOD

S

ALUTATIONS eels and herrings. Let’s face it, back ache is certainly not for sissies, after falling in a cave in Spain 30 years ago and breaking her back, my mom is no stranger to back prob lems. With her recent woes I had no option than to check her into the Marina Beach rest home for 10 days whereby hopefully she will be able to maneuver again with more ease. En route to the rest home I had no idea what to expect. The facility itself portrays a pleasant farm atmosphere and had none of the usual clinical scents that usually pre vail in such establishments. The fact that my mom has to be cared for a short while is quite daunting especial

ly since just last week we were at home in Cape Town recharging the batteries and catching up with old friends. Anyway they were all sitting at our counter, completely oblivious to me the man servant, reminiscing on past hus bands and the pros and cons of female or gasm, when my mom pointed to a wooden rooster in the kitchen, saying girls what you all say is meaningless for as long as I have a cock in the window I’m doing fine. Surely she realised her comment literally made me choke and all I wanted to do was play ostrich and bury my head in the sand. Thankfully, someone steered the con versation to a particular day where they, after listening to jazz at the Winchester mansions in Cape Town left the building straight into the famous Cape south easter that is capable of blowing buses over. After much laughter, death as always entered the fray and a toast was made to my great aunty Lena who recently died in Holland. She was a remarkable painter and one of her works was on her death card, where her family had written something. My mom explained while creditable it was not Lena’s own words and that she wanted to have a hand in her own obituary and was insistent that the song ‘No matter what’ by Boyzone be played at her wake. She was adamant that no funeral take place as

whenever have you heard of someone be ing excited about going to a funeral, Yes dear readers, don’t we all know it, sometimes dealing with our parents can be humorous as well as daunting, their eccen tric behaviour can drive us round the bend, sorry mom, but your repetitive rambling on about how dad threw a sandwich at you to propose has been heard so many times that we recite it in our sleep Also your forgetfulness and incessant arguments about arbitrary things can be quite tiresome and I apologise for being a bit curt with you sometimes, when I really should be concerned that you are aware of your shortcomings and are terrified, and saddened by them. Wait, I am a parent as well and my child just turned 21 which makes me feel quite ancient at times. So mom, I think together we should get a remember diary and this way I will come to realise that I forget more things than you do, similarly lets tackle each task with the thinking that failure is not an option and we will get it done. I fondly remember my late grandmoth er whom I visited as often as I could in Hol land she was a remarkable woman who had seven children, My mom and her twin sister witnessed one encounter when they were about 10 by seeing their slightly inebriated father giv

ing my grandmother a pair of blue tur quoise panties as a peace offeringcome present. To the horror of the twins her reac tion was to promptly hit him with a frying pan on the head and tell him in Dutch to compare the blues. So while I realise every situation is unique, remember the only thing ageing parents want from their children is to sim ply hear from them. In honour of my Dutch mother, here with a classical Dutch recipe for bitterbal len, which are usually served as a snack to gether with your beverage of choice. Beef bitterballen Ingredients •1 kg beef mince •1 red onion finely chopped •½ teaspoon rainbow pepper •¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg •fresh thyme sprigs •water •olive oil •oil for deep frying For the roux •100 grams butter •120 grams flour •½ onion chopped •300 ml milk •300 ml beef stock from the meat •Khoisan salt •rainbow pepper •nutmeg

ULTIPLE award-winning satirical puppet and star of the Emmy-nominated TV comedynewsseriesLateNiteNews,Chester Missing, is coming to KwaZulu-Natal. Sharing the stage with the outspoken puppet, who has an opinion on everything from Zimbabwe to Crocs, is his ventriloquist sidekick and one of South Africa’s most sought-after comedians Conrad Koch.

The funny pair hit the stage for the Chester Missing Road Show at Sibaya’s iZulu Theatre on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 April. Koch might be hoping for an evening of insightful political madness and hilarious puppet characters, but Missing has other plans. For those less politically-minded Koch brings with him international show-girl diva and wanna-be celebrity gossip columnist, Hilary the ostrich, and an adorable monster-with-issues, Ronnie. Expect laugh-a-minute comedy madness in a hilarious show described as “Frank talk, world-class ventriloquism, crazy characters and cuttingedge political commentary” (Mail and Guardian). “Comedy fans can expect riotous humour, expertpuppetry, andanevening of entertainment that is quite unlike any other. Puppet master Koch has a unique approach, combining razorsharp stand-up comedy, puppetry and social anthropology to create hilarious but thought-provoking encounters. He is well-known on the South African comedy circuit and has been receiving standing ovations for the past 16 years. This promises to be one funny show,” says Belinda Jelf, Sibaya marketing manager. The winner of the Entertainer of the Year award for 2010, Koch has worked all over the world, been featured on local and international television and is a frequent guest at some of South Africa’s biggest comedy events such as The Smirnoff Comedy Festival, the Vodacom Comedy Festival, King Size Comedy, The 94, 7 Heavyweight Comedy Jam, Blacks Only, SA London Comedy Festival, and more. Koch has audiences in stitches, by talking to himself through a variety of extremely eccentric characters including Ronnie, the precocious monster, Chester, the 51% BEE partner and Hilary, a bad-attitude ostrich. They cover everything from politics to skin disease, which are funny when you scratch deeper, and are topped only by Koch turning two members of the audienceintothestarsoftheirownboy band. Choc "Cows" plan stampede coastal WEEKLY at Tour Durban 10 April 2015

WEEKLY REPORTER IN among the thousands of riders lining up for the start of the 45km Fun Ride at the aQuellé Tour Durban presented by Sunday Tribune on Sunday 26 April will be a group of passionate road cyclists dressed in eye catching cows suits, determined to contin ue the awareness and fundraising for chil dren suffering with cancer. "The Cows" have become a distinctive feature of the aQuellé Tour Durban, and last year were cheered on by fellow riders and spectators as they completed the ride in their bovine attire. The Cows project was started in 2008, by friends close to the family of oneyear old Jessica Bain, who died from cancer. Her parents Kerrin and Grant Bain threw their weight behind a pilot fundraiser for CHOC (The Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa) at the 94.7 Cycle Challenge in memory of their daughter. The project caught the imagination of the race and the public and snowballed as a fundraiser and awareness drive for the fight against childhood cancer. Soon a passionate KwaZuluNatal branchwasformed, determinedtousetheir desire to challenging themselves at a wide variety of sporting events to contribute to wards the fight against childhood cancer. Durban businessman Gordon Reid has been involved with The Cows for several years and this year is hoping to take the in volvement of The Cows to the next level, and involve as many new riders as possible. "Our motto is simple Love Living Life," says Reid. " When it all started at the 2008 94.7thepeopleinvolvedtriedtogetmatch ing costumes to ride in and all they could find was six cow suits. That's where The Cows was born!" "It is open to anyone," he said. "At an entry level we expect each person to raise R6000 before the race. For that they get theirowncowcyclingkitandgettoridewith The Cows. There are also categories for Su per Cows, Calves and Apocalypse Cows. For the extra nutty cows who raise in excess of R20 000 the opportunity to ride in a full cow suit is also an option.” The annual aQuellé Tour Durban is deeply rooted to the Domino Foundation that benefits as the official race charity. They have welcomed the efforts of The Cows as another tangible way that this iconicsportingeventcanbenefitthebroad er community. A

FESTIVE vibe, fabulous music, jugglers, stilt-walkers and face-painters – there’s fun for the whole family at the Discovery East Coast Radio Big Walk. Throw in fresh air and a magnificent view and you have what promises to be a morning to remember. Tens of thousands of people are expected to walk together in Durban on Sunday, 24 May, making hap-

py memories and taking healthy selfies. East Coast Breakfast host, Darren Maule, has been rounding up the troops at ECR headquarters. “What a great way to spend quality time with those close to you while getting some exercise, plus, you get to take in the best promenade in the country,” said Maule. “You’ll also get to hang out with some pretty cool people from all around KZN,” says Darren’s co-host, Natarah Nadesan. “You’ll definitely make new friends. Selfies will be taken and phone numbers will be exchanged. So come walk Durban with us.” Nadesan and Maule will join other ECR presenters along the route, playing some great

music, handing out spot-prizes and getting people moving. It will be an all-round festive atmosphere from the start at uShaka Marine World right to the finish at People’s Park, Moses Mabhida Stadium. There are four distances – five-kilometre, 10km, 15km and the timed 20km.
