Balram added that no arrests were made as the farm workers’ residence were shared by several people and the plantation could not be linked to any specific person. The plants were removed and destroyed by officers who made several trips with a bakkie to transport the weed to a location to be destroyed, Balram said.

GREAT great grandmother and her 65-yearold daughter were attacked by an armed intruder in Verulam last Wednesday. It is alleged that the 86-yearold woman, who is semi-blind, and her completely blind daughter were asleep at their home near Chubby's Garage at 12.30am on Wednesday morning when they were attacked by an intruder who stabbed the woman eight times while she was asleep. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) head Prem Balram, the suspect gained entry by climbing onto the roof of thehomebeforeremovinganasbestos roof sheet. “The suspect then broke the ceiling board inside the house before walking into the room and stabbing the sleeping 86year-old. Her screams woke up her mentally-challenged and blind 65-year-old daughter who sleeps in the same separated room. “The woman got off her bed and attempted to assist [her mother] and fell to the ground which caused serious head injuries. Another family member who lives in a separate house on the same property rushed to the main door to find the 86-yearold covered in blood and locked inside her home.”

Balram said Rusa were called to the scene by a family member and responded to find the woman in a critical state. “While officers entered the home to search for the suspect, Rusa paramedics treated the woman and rushed her to hospital.” He added that just R200 in coins were taken from the home. Balram said that the suspect seemed to know the home well and where keys were located. He said that the suspect walked past the bed were the blind woman was asleep and attacked the semi-blind granny adding “that it was certainly an attempt to kill her”. “I questioned the family of the victim and they informed me that the two women were previouslyrobbedontwodifferentoccasions. A total of R16 000 were stolen from them. “The family also believes that the suspect is a known male who operated alone and attempted to kill the granny as she could identify him.” ArewardofR10000hasbeen offered by Reaction Unit South Africa for any information leading to the arrest of the suspect. Balram said that he was hoping that the money will encourageaninformertocomeforward so the suspect can be arrested and charged for the attack on the elderly and disabled women. Police are investigating.

Crime out of control again

>> Verulam plagued with hijackings and armed robberies KAVEEL SINGH

H

IJACKINGS and theft of motor vehicles are just some of the crimesthathavesentVerulam into a crime spiral. Commenting on the state of safety over the last two months in Verulam, Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) head Prem Balram said millions of rands worth of vehicles and items have been taken by criminals. “Around 20 vehicles have been hijacked and around 25 motor vehicles have been stolen in Verulam alone in February this year. Several people have been murdered and housebreakings and armed robberies have escalated.” According to Balram, fear has once again gripped residents on the North Coast who feel that the crime situation is out of control “with brazen armed robbers and hijackers striking during daylight hours and fleeing with vaulables”. “Some resident believe that the

crime has spiralled and daylight robberies and hijackings are a direct result of the Rusa helicopter not being present during the past few months.” The Rusa-owned Robinson R44 helicopter was at an Aircraft Maintenance Organisation for and overhaul and service. Balram said aircraft engineers were awaiting parts from the Robinson Helicopters Company that are based near Los Angeles in the United States and that the helicopter “should be in operation within two weeks”. The aircraft is often called by the public and the police in assisting to track down suspects, assist in recovery of motor vehicles and respond to serious crimes in progress. Balram added that a major contribution to crime was the involvement of law enforcement in criminal activities explaining that security companies, the police and people tasked with protecting South Africans were teaming up with criminals to earn quick money. Balram said that several arrests made by officers with glaring evidence against the suspect were let loose and corruption seem to be rife resulting in the same suspect being

arrested several times for the same crime. “The helicopter and crew will be backinoperationshortlyandthejoint operations between the South African Police and Reaction Unit South Africa will result in a decrease in crime in Verulam.” Commenting on the state of crime, ward councillor Chocks Arunajallam said there seems to be an influx just after the December period. “I think it is clear that most people have their guard up during the festive period. After January a lot of people seem to be very exposed and therefore taken advantage off.” Verulam Community Policing Forum (CPF) chair person Duncan Dube said although he did not have statistics with recent figures he believed unemployment created a desire to commit crime. “It looks like this one is beyond our control because people think they are satisfying the need to sustain themselves.Unfortunatelyit’sawrongway of solving personal problems. “Added to this is the easy availability and affordability of drugs. Drug addicts will risk their lives just to feed the habit.”

Dubesaidopportunisticcrimewas also a major issue. “We are squarely to blame for this. Wearing expensive necklaces, open gates, unlocked vehicles, is, beside being careless, an opportunity for criminals. “Criminals are opportunistic by nature and they will not let the opportunity go by. There are many reasons, but these are top of the list.” He added that safety was not just the priority of the police.

Two injured as truck slams into bridge WEEKLY REPORTER TWO people were critically injured after a truck veered off the roadway and slammed into a bridge on the N2 North between Umdloti and La Mercy on Tuesday afternoon. Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said para medics arrived at the scene and found two men trapped in the twisted frame of the vehicle. “While the Netcare rescue officer and firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free the injured, paramedics worked tirelessly to stabilise them. “As soon as the injured were freed, paramedics immobilisedthemontraumaboardsandthentrans ported them to a nearby hospital,” added Botha.

THE demarcation board of South Africa has again, on the eve of election hype, resolved to propose changes to ward demarcation. A draft proposal has been introduced suggesting that Gandhi’s Hill, Chetty’s Hill, Hillview, Potty’s Hill, VanRova,MetcalfandWestbrookallmovefromward 62, ANC councillor Nonpumelelo Mabaso’s ward 61 to, councillor Michael Abrahams’ ward. On the coastal side Seatides, La Mercy, Umdloti, Desainagar, Canelands, Buffelsdale, Chelmsford Heights and Flamingo Heights have all been pro posed to move to ward 58 under councillor Mxolisi Nzimbomvu. Commenting on the demarcation proposal, Abra hams said he was not sure of the real reason behind it. “To me it does not matter because I have always been here [to serve] the people. They can put me wherever they want to, I will still be working hard for the community. I am a worker. The people know this about me.” COPE councillor Steven Naidoo was in stark con trast with this opinion directly calling out the ANC on its “devious intent”. “The obvious question that arises is why the de marcation board has decided to always do this as we run up to the election period. And the demarcation is always shifted to suit the ANC and its candidates. This seems to be a strategic ploy for areas that the ANC has not done well in.” Naidoo went on to say that issues of service deliv ery and housing had been going on for years yet gov ernment chose to prioritise this.

“We have more pressing issues like electricity and water restrictions. The concern is that we are not able to deliver properly. I have tried to contact the demar cation board and they are not furnishing information. It seems like the ruling party people have the informa tion. This should be made public immediately. Rate payers are affected and they are hampered most with the lack of service.” Tongaat Civic Association (TCA) head Jeeva Pillay said it was obvious that the demarcation was a politi cal tool. “It has always been this way. Even the previous government would use it to disguise their poor num ber of voters. It is not something that will be stopped immediately. It does create a lot of problems. It is just not democratic. The ANC is quick to blame the apart heid government for issues, yet they turn around and use the old regime’s tactics.” Pillay said he felt the redistribution of areas from ward 58 was positive. “They would remove Waterloo and still have the airport. It is an area that they lost. Ward 61 has been seriously reduced, but has put Westbrook into it.” Pillay said demarcation showed the ANC was “worried”. “They are doing what generations of colonialist did to protect their interest.” DA councillor Brian Jayanathan said it was clearly a politicallymotivated move by the ANC. “The demarcation board seems to conveniently provide these opportunities for just one party so their councillors and officials are reelected into positions. How is this a democracy? I think we all need to take a step back and realise we are being taken for a ride. “South Africans need to stand up and be counted and protest this kind of behaviour. It is about time we stop letting them get away with this.” Speaking to the Weekly a spokesperson from the Demarcation Board said ward boundaries are re viewed every five years prior to the local elections and the number of councillors and thus the number of wards may change. “The MEC determines the number of councillors which is formula based, and half of the number of councillors represent wards. All wards in a municipali ty must have approximately the same number of reg istered voters. The norm is determined by dividing the number of registered voters as on 5 March 2014 by the number of wards. A deviation of 15% from the norm is allowed.” When asked how the proposed change would af fect residents and municipal runnings on a day to day basis, he said: “Wards are meant to create an area within which voters can vote for a ward candidate of theirchoicetorepresentthemintheirmunicipalcoun cil. Voters vote at the voting station where they are registered.” When asked if the motivation behind the demar cation was politically motivated, he said it was “the ward delimitation process is prescribed by Schedule 1 to the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, 1998.”

CBD, said he did not think he would ever get robbed of his belongings inside a bank. Narain's story began earlier this month when he visited Standard Bank on Watson Highway to obtain and fill an SARS provisional form. “I went to a little table and started filling in the form. Suddenly a guy interrupted me and asked for assist-

son for the removal of the trees to be published. The article refers to “a Casuarina branch fell on a human being many years ago and the human being died”. Does this then justify the destruction of all Casuarina trees 50 years later. I was, however, glad to note that the developer, in being unquestioningly obedient to the instruction to destroy from the department obliged himself willingly, and at his own expense, to hire an excavator, dig up all the remaining stumps and then replenish the affected area with indigenous trees. Nature lovers and the community need to register their anger and grief at the massacre of the once delightful landscape I liken it to a “monstrous gang rape of young virgins.” I draw the attention of all concerned to Section 24 of the Constitution of RSA wherein a right is entrenched: “Everyone has the right ….. to have the environment protected, for the benefit of present and future generations …. Through measures to promote conservation” The Bible in Romans Chapter 8 confirms the plight of nature (trees in

Death sentence for Casuarina trees HE mindless mass destruction of the Casuarina Trees at the corner of Watson Highway and Genazzano Road is a despicable act which has left the coastal landscape blighted - untimely visited by a curse of man. These trees were not just trees or “alien invaders” as the so called authorities would have us believe, they formed an eco-system that was pleasant to view and to relief to sit under or walk beneath. Itwasarestingplacewithanabundance of crisp fresh air to the tired soul.Thesightthatmetusonthatfateful afternoon was like viewing with disgust and helplessness the remains of several dehorned rhino suffocating in their own blood. The scene resembled the gory sight of a suicide bombing in a busy metropolis. Utterly saddening. My question is: has the Department of Forestry pronounced “genocide” on all Casuarina trees in the country and whether the department has also declared war on all “alien” plants in South Africa? Will blue gums, Mdoni and Guava and mulberry be next? I would further appreciate the rea-

particular) that await liberation from frustrations of creation. Nature conservation gets scant attention from the budget of RSA and its sustenance depends on the goodwill of nature lovers. Our seas are empty, our rhinos and elephants are fast disappearing and “rogues” plunder the shad and crayfish. The presidency needs to set up a committed environmental police force to address these issues. It simply means transferring all “blue clad, trigger happy” members of the current police force into this unit. They possess the brute force to suppress anything and nothing stands in their way. If they can enter the sanctuary of parliament and break jaws in the presenceoftheircommanderinchief, then they are capable of stopping all forms of environmental abuse eg. overfishing, rhino hunting, illegal dredging and sand mining so mention a few. Zuma stated that the current blackouts are due to apartheid. We thought the CEO of Eskom Tshediso Matona probably got it right when he said in no uncertain manner that Eskom’s failings were due to a lack of maintenance over the years. We were disconcerted when possibly the most effective communicator of recent years, Andrew Etzinger, had his tongue stilled because his fluent explanations became unacceptable to the ruling party. At a time when our daily visits of stage two blackouts are punctuated by an incident when Eskom passed through the threshold of third stage blackouts, how worried should we be by the bland assurance from the utility that there isnottheslightestpossibilityofatotalblackout? If our figures are correct Eskom has a generating capacity of about 9000 megawatts. When stage three is reached the utility has lost 4000 megawatts and when it is breached a national blackout is not far down the road. The five years’ delays in the commissioning of Medupi and Kusile Power Stations has seen the original budget of R150 billion jump up to R326 billion. Together with the monthly cost of R2 billion for diesel, this will push Eskom’s interest payments into the stratosphere. A piece of legislation which would bring im-

mediate relief and which would enable independentpowerproducerstostrengthenthenational grid has been rejected by the NEC of the ANC where political will eats away the ability of the economy to grow. This ruling from Luthuli House has been dulyacceptedbythebloatedtopbrassoftheutility, many of whom owe their positions to being well connected politically, rather than knowing much about management and the generation of electricity. On the one side there is an impossibly high wage bill where the average yearly income of some 46 000 employees is R633 000 a year or R53 000 a month. Who would not like to work at Eskom with the retired CEO, Brian Dames, taking home R22 million last year. On the other side there is a patent inability to generate income by selling its product. The eight metros, seven of which are run down by the ANC, owe Eskom R53 billion. The total figure for all municipalities runs at R93 billion. Soweto alone owes Eskom R4 billion, but the ruling party is unlikely to take any action with the metro and municipal elections taking place early next year with their position faltering badly already.

RAMMY Award winning and multiplatinum-selling singer-songwriter Chris Brown (Breezy) returns to South Africa in April for two concerts only. ‘Breezy’ begins his tour at the Coca-Cola Dome, Johannesburg on Thursday, 2 April followed by a second concert in partnership with East Coast Radio at the Moses Mabhida People’s Park, Durban on Saturday, 4 April. Tickets available at ticketpro.co.za SA promoters, Glen Netshipise (Glen21 Entertainment), Sobukwe Jali (Jalibird) and Thato Segaole (Vertex Events) are excited to bring back major international artist Chris Brown, supported by August Alsina on the X Tour Live line-up. The three promoters unanimously agree thatfanswillbeampedbytheChrisBrown/August Alsina billing which is bound to be one of this years biggest entertainment highlights. August Alsina, 22-year old New Orleans hip-hop singing sensation, will support Brown. This is the first time that August Alsina will perform in this country. Alsina recently collaborated with Brown and Trey Songz for the ‘I Luv This S**t remix. That trio came together on stage at the 2014 BET Awards for an epic remix performance. To date, the single has sold more than 1,000,000 copies and been certified Platinum by the RIAA. Coupled with previously released chart-topping hits Love More featuring Nicki Minaj, Don’t think they know featuring Aaliyah and Fine China, Brown has gained critical praise and excitement from the public for X. Brown said, “I want everyone to take a journey with me through X. We’re going to experience the highs and the lows, the love and the pain.” X is the follow-up to Brown’s 2012 charttopping album Fortune, which debuted at number 1 on both the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart and earned Brown a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Following the phenomenal response to the sell-out 2012 Chris Brown Carpe Diem SA tour, a high demand for tickets is anticipated so fans are encouraged to book now. Don’t miss megastar Chris Brown and supporting guest artist August Alsina soon in SA. The research team found a lower mor tality risk among those who watched less TV postdiagnosis, although it was not deemed statistically significant. No firm conclusions On the more specific question of how exercise habits and television viewing routines might affect the risk of dying from colon cancer, Arem said the research team could not draw any firm conclu sions. “We looked at both allcause mortali ty and colorectal cancerspecific mortali ty in these analyses,” she noted. “[And] the risk of dying from colorectal cancer was higher among the individuals who watchedmoreTVcomparedtothosewho watched less than two hours per day, but the associations were not statistically significant.” Health24

tion of the initial survey. By stacking prediagnosis exercise habits up against cancer survival infor mation, the researchers determined that colon cancer patients who had seven or more hours of weekly leisure activity be fore their diagnosis showed a 20 percent lower risk of dying – for any reason – than those who had engaged in no leisure ac tivity whatsoever. And after analysing a followup sur vey completed between 2004 and 2005 by roughly 1 800 of the original 3 800 co lon cancer patients, the team found that those who engaged in seven or more hoursofweeklyleisureactivitypostdiag nosis faced a 31 percent lower risk of dying from any cause, regardless of their activi ty levels before diagnosis. ANYpeopleignorepotentialwarn ing signs of cancer, a new British survey found. The study involved 1 700 people aged 50 and older in the United Kingdom who completedahealthquestionnairelisting17 symptoms, including 10 widely publicised possible cancer symptoms. The symptoms included unexplained cough, bleeding, or significant changes in bowel or bladder ac tivity. While 53 percent of the participants said they had experienced at least one of the potential cancer symptoms in the pre viousthreemonths,only2percentthought cancerwasapossiblecauseofthosesymp toms.

In many cases, people attributed po tential signs of cancer to reasons such as age, infection, arthritis, cysts and haemor rhoids, according to the Cancer Research U.K.funded survey. It was published in the journal PLOS ONE. Check symptoms early "Most people with potential warning symptoms don't have cancer, but some will and others may have other diseases that would benefit from early attention," leadauthorDr.KatriinaWhitaker, seniorre searchfellowatUniversityCollegeLondon, saidinaCancerResearchU.K.newsrelease. "That's why it's important that these symptoms are checked out, especially if they don't go away. But people could delay seeing a doctor if they don't acknowledge cancer as a possible cause," Whitaker add ed. "It's worrying that even the more obvi ous warning symptoms, such as unex plained lumps or changes to the appear ance of a mole, were rarely attributed to cancer, although they are often wellrec ognised in surveys that assess the public's knowledge of the disease," she said. Sara Hiom, director of early diagnosis at Cancer Research U.K., said in the news release: "Diagnosing cancer early saves lives because it gives patients a better chance that treatments will be success ful." HEALTH24

WATCHING too much television may low er your chances of survival after colon cancer, new research suggests. Lower mortality risk “The takeaway message from our study is that both minimising TV viewing, to less than two hours per day, and in creasing exercise, to fourplus hours per week, wereassociatedwithlowermortal ity risk among colorectal cancer survi vors,” explained study author Hannah Ar em, a postdoctoral fellow with the U.S. National Cancer Institute’s nutritional epidemiological branch. While the study showed an associa tion between television watching, exer cising and survival odds among colon cancer patients, it did not prove a cause andeffect link. Arem and her colleagues report their findings online in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. To explore the impact of lifestyle on colon cancer survival, the study authors sifted through data that had been col lected by the U.S. National Institutes of Health for an earlier study. The initial investigation had included more than 566 000 men and women be tween the ages of 50 and 71, all of whom had completed an initial health and lifes tyle questionnaire at some point be tween 1995 and 1996. All were asked to indicate the degree to which they had routinely participated in moderate to vigorous “leisuretime ac tivity” on a weekly basis over the past decade. Activities included swimming, biking, golf, tennis, dancing, fastwalking, jogging, aerobic exercise and/or heavy gardening. Weekly leisure activity The new analysis honed in on the nearly 3 800 participants who went on to be diagnosed with colon cancer. On av erage, the diagnoses had occurred ap proximately five years following comple

THREEuniversitieswillgetR37millionforresearchtowards fighting cancer, the Sunday Times reported. The money, from the Medical Research Council, would be used to set up research units. The University of Cape Town (UCT) would focus on gynaecological cancers, in cluding those of the cervix, uterus and ovaries. The University of Witwatersrand would concentrate on cancers of the breast, colon and pancreas, and the Univer sity of KwaZuluNatal on cancers of the oesophagus, gall bladder, and liver. Head of African Cancer Institute and chairman of an advisory committee on cancer, Prof Vikash Sewram, said more cancers were being diagnosed because more people were being screened. tyle factors affected colon cancer risk: healthy weight; low amounts of belly fat; regular physical activity; not smoking and limiting alcohol consumption; and a well-balanced diet. This diet was high in fruits, vegetables, fish, yoghurt, nuts and seeds, and foods rich in fibre, and low in red and processed meat. The more of these factors people had, the lower their risk for colon cancer, according to the researchers. Compared to those with none or only one of the factors, those people with two healthy factors were 13 percent less likely to develop colon cancer while the risk was 37 percent less for those with all five healthy factors, the study found. However, the association was greateramongmenthanwomen, according to the authors of the study in the October 10 issue of the journal BMC Medicine. Preventing colon cancer "Estimatesbasedonourstudy populations suggest that up to 22

percent of the cases in men and 11 percent of the cases in women would have been prevented if all five of the healthy lifestyle behaviours had been followed. Our results particularly demonstrate the potential for prevention in men who are at a higher risk of [colon] cancer than women," lead author Krasimira Aleksandrova, of the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke, said in a journal news release. Read: Could vitamin D help prevent cancer? The findings "provide additional incentive to individuals, medical professionals and public health authorities to invest in healthy lifestyle initiatives. Each person can contribute a lot to avoid cancer; the more healthy lifestyle changes, the better," Aleksandrova concluded. While the findings don't prove that healthy living will prevent colon cancer, they add to evidence that factors such as weight and diet influence your risk.

Early diagnosis of breast cancer is possible with routine mammography and early biopsy of suspicious lumps or lesions. ThelatestresearchWorldwide, researchers are searching for clues to the causes of breast cancer, while exploring new prevention strategies and treatment options. A few important findings include the following: * The success rate of new hormonaltreatmentforbreastcancerisvery promising. Studies show that women who received hormonal treatment immediately after diagnosis and prior to surgery experienced such marked shrinkage of the lump that half of all patients who were earmarked for a mastectomy (complete removal of the breast) needed only a lumpectomy (removal of the lump, while saving the breast). * Research shows that new adjuvant therapy (treatment given after surgery) with aromatase blockers can stop breast cancer as well as or even better than tamoxifen - an antioestrogen drug used to prevent oestrogen-positive breast cancer from spreading to other parts of the body or to treat breast cancer that has already spread to other parts of the body. * Although it's still a hotly debated topic, researchers are finding that it

That is why experts encourage all women to begin self-examination and routine mammograms from the age of 40 or earlier if you have particular risk factors.

CANCER is emerging as one of the ma jor public health problems in South Af rica, said President Jacob Zuma. “Breast cancer in particular affects scores of women in our country, and re quires our utmost attention,” said Zu ma at the launch of the “Warriors Walk for Cancer” initiative by his wife Tobeka Madiba Zuma’s foundation. “Let us remember that cancer is not about statistics, it is about people, families, and communities. It is about our loved ones.” He said one of the important inter ventions is ensuring that women have equitable access to quality healthcare. “Crucial is ensuring that women are di agnosed early enough to save their lives.” Read: Why cancer remains a taboo subject in SA Zuma also expressed concern about the fear and stigma associated with cancer. “Womensufferfrombeingdiscrimi nated against by their communities, ostracised by their partners or hus bands and painful deaths from cancer. Cultural barriers and taboo about sur gery especially of the breast.” The president said the rates of breast and cervical cancer are also rap idly increasing due to the impact of risk factors associated with changing lifes tyles such as obesity, smoking and al cohol. “Our people must also take respon sibility for their health too,” he said. “In other words, we cannot act irre sponsiblyandsmoke, drinkalcohol, not exerciseandputonexcessweight.Ifwe do so, we place our lives at risk for the early onset of these noncommunica ble diseases so largely preventable.” Health24

might not be necessary to cut out all cancerous glands in cases where breast cancer has spread to glands surrounding the breast. The recently published AMAROS trial indicated that removal of the so-called "sentinel" gland - the first lymph node or nodes in the armpit to which breast cancer can spread - is highly effective in treating breast cancer, especially when combined with radiotherapy. * The newest "silver bullet" in doctors' treatment arsenal is T-DM1, a three-pronged combination drug that interferes with cancer cell growth in a targeted way. It attaches very specifically to the cancer cell and releasesapotentdoseofchemotherapy within the cell, while sparing normal tissue. In one study group, T-DM1 increased survival rates in late-stage cancer patients by 50%. However, much more work needs tobedonebeforetheuseoftheexperimental therapy - a completely new model for attacking cancer - can be widely implemented. In South Africa, one in 29 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, according to the South African National Cancer Registry. The “Doo be doo”, “Pot Belly” and “Waka Waka” performers who have gone multiplatinum world wide will be able to be seen for a fair pass of R30. Freshly Ground formed in early 2002 and is made up of seven talented and diverse musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Fronted by the diminutive but dynamic Zolani Ma hola, the band exudes a live performance energy that has been the bedrock of their success. the band as one of South Africa’s most successful young acts. Freshly Ground released their second studio al bum Nomvula in July 2004. Nomvula was recorded andproducedbyJBArthurandSibusisoVictorMason do. ThealbumsparkedinterestfromSonyBMGAfrica, who signed the band and released Nomvula in Sep tember that year. Radio quickly picked up on the sin gle ‘Doo Be Doo’ and the catchy song went on to be come a crossover favourite amongst a diverse spread of stations and their listeners. ‘Doo Be Doo’ was the most played song in South Africa in 2005. The major success of ‘Doo Be Doo’ was followed by the singles ‘I’d Like’, ‘Zithande’, ‘Things Have Changed’ and the title track of the album ‘Nomvula’. The album sold 300 000 units in South Africa alone earning it multiplatinum status. The success and broad appeal of the band was celebrated in November 2006 when Freshly Ground won the MTV Europe Award in the category Best Afri can Act. The award placed the band firmly on the in ternational music map and earned them further rec ognitiononhomesoilassignificantSouthAfricancul tural exports.

The 2015 Range Rover Evoque is coming to our shores.

>> Hit a pothole or climbed acurbtopark-checkthewheel alignment it will move out. >> Have punctures repaired correctly - not a push in plug just because its cheaper.

>> Use manufactures recommended tyre pressure, not just 200 kpa.

>> Rotate your tyres at least every 10 000 km. Don’t just replace the front tyres,as tyres do age,you may end up with a blow out.

>> Use valve caps to protect valve core - sand grit is a major cause of pressure loss.

Ilembe crowned KZN Challenge League champs >> ‘Our players were positive from the start of the season...’ WEEKLY REPORTER

I

LEMBE Cricket Union was crowned KwaZulu-Natal Challenge League (stream two) champions after trouncing Tongaat by 7-wickets in the final league game of the 2014/2015 season played at the Outspan Ground in Tongaat on Sunday. The decision by Ilembe to field first after winning the toss produced the desired result after Shaun Pillay (2) was caught at mid-on by Rocky Ngobhozi off the bowling of Dillon Rautenbachinthethirdoverofthematch. Three overs later Darmesh was sent for an early shower after being clean bowled by Aaron Pillay for a duck.Rautenbachclaimedhissecond victim after Anuj Chumada was

Jushveer Singh and Yushveer Mungal doubled Tongaat’s tally, taking the score from 12/3 to 25/4 before Mungal (3) was brilliantly caught at gully by Yusuf Banda off the bowling of Rautenbach. The Jacobs-Rautenbach combination struck again in the 15th over after Chris Govender (3) was dismissed cheaply. Rautenbach showed scant respect for the Tongaat batsmen claiming his fifth victim, Kaveel Madoh for two runs. Number eight batsman Rishen Madoh hoping to take the game to the bowlers was caught in the covers by Zufilkar Ali off the bowling of Rautenbach in the 17th over for six runs with the host’s score being 37/7.

Logan Govender was sent back to the change-room without getting off the mark after being clean bowled by Pillay. Rautenbach was in seventh heaven in the 19th over after claiming his seventh victim, Anthony Pillay for a duck. Pillay wrapped up the Tongaat innings after clean bowling Prenesan Govender for four runs. The home team were bundled out for a paltry 45/10 in the 20th over with Jushveer Singh (13) the only batsman to record double-digits. Rautenbach was the destroyer-inchiefforIlembeclaimingacareerbest of seven wickets for 11 runs from 10 overs. He was brilliant supported by Pillay who grabbed 3/33 from from 9.5 overs. Chasing 46 runs for victory from

50 overs (almost one run per over), Alveiro Nadasen and Steven Jacobs put an opening stand of 24 runs in just six overs before Jacobs (2) was caught by Rishen Madoh in the covers off the bowling of Chumada. Nadasen raced to 24 runs after smashing two boundaries, but lost his wicket cheaply after being clean bowled by Govender in the 9th over. Govender notched up a quick double after clean bowling Iqbal Sher (4). Needing three runs for victory with more than 40-overs to spare,Ngobhozi(16notout)smashed Chumada for a six to guide Ilembe to the KZN Challenge League (Stream Two) title. Khwela excited by individual Non-Stop Dusi challenge WEEKLY REPORTER

LAST year’s K2 Dusi winner, twice Dusi K1 thirdplace finisher and double NonStop Dusi Canoe Marathon champion Sbonelo Khwela will take a new approach to this year's “Dusi in a day” on Friday 6 March when he looks to go the distance from Camps Drift, Pietermaritzburg to Blue La goon, Durban alone.

Having threatened to do so in 2014, the Euro Stee l/ Red Bull flyer shied away from the individual challenge at the 11th hour and opted to partner five time marathon world champion Hank McGregor (Jeep Team/Kayak Centre) in stead. McGregor and Khwela's success was Khwela’sfourthNonStopDusititlehaving previously tasted victory with Thomas Ngidi, Thulani Mbanjwa (Build it/Williams

The intrigue of taking on the challenge alone has flooded Khwela and after his bronze medal effort in the recent Dusi Ca noe Marathon, the “Dusi Darling” has con firmedhewillnow“frontup”totheunique task.
