Man shot in botched hijacking >> Wife tells Weekly how husband narrowly escaped shooting death WEEKLY REPORTER

A

MODEL airplane enthusiast narrowly escaped with his life after being shot twice in what appears to be a botched hijack attempt.

George Geyser (73) was on his way home on Saturday morning after flying a model aircraft at the uMhlanga Model Fliers Club airfield near Hazelmere Dam, Verulam, when the would-be hijackers struck. Geyser first saw a branch blocking

the dirt road and then, according to his wife Wilma (70), “he saw two people standing on the road and he put twoandtwotogetherandsaid to himself ‘just drive’.” “They shot at him and he got about 500 metres away when, due to the shock and loss of blood, he lost consciousness and crashed down the bank and into the trees at the side of the road.” “Luckily someone saw him and called for help. But it was touch and go whether he made it.” Thecoupleownandrunashoefactory in Phoenix. Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) were first on the scene where they found Geyser in his vehicle, a white Mercedes Benz station wagon, just before 9am. He had been shot twice in the arm and was unconscious and bleeding profusely. According to a RUSA statement Geyser’s car had “lodged against a tree after crashing through a light pole.” Geyser was taken to Mediclinic Victoria Hospital in a critical condition. .

Housebreaking suspects arrested WEEKLY REPORTER TWO men were arrested minutes after they broke into a Phoenix home

last week. According to provincial police spokesperson Thulani Zwane, Phoenix SAPS recovered the stolen items and arrested the teenage suspects. Zwane said that the victim had locked his home at Theomore Drive, Stanmore at around 6am on Wednesday and proceeded to work. “The victim received a report from his neighbour that his premises were broken into that afternoon. “Members of SAPS Phoenix were contacted and on their way to the

Residents gathered on Saturday night, burningtreestubs, tyresandsmashingglass expressing their displeasure at ward coun cillor Mxolisi Nzimbomvu. According to residents on scene, they were promised homes before the national elections on Wednesday, 7 May, but had

been told that Nzimbomvu was allegedly sellinghomesforR5000toresidentsinoth er areas of the ward. When Nzimbomvu ar rived at the scene, residents chased him and his bodyguards. One irate resident Bongani Mtetwa said that he will not allow his family to be robbed. “This man never visits our area at all. We are living on a hill that is a mudslide when it rains. They come to us and they say you must vote for a better future. We give them what they want and now he is robbing us to make money for himself.

scene, they were informed by residents that the suspects ran through the park. “A description of the suspects was giventothepolicemen whothenspotted them running across the Phoenix Highway. “Police chased the suspects and they were caught at Ridgecroft. The suspects were found in possession of two BMW nap bags, sneakers, computer equipment, clothing and jewellery to the value of R100 000,” said Zwane.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the quick response that led to the arrest and the recovery of stolen items. “The members will work around the clock to establish if the arrested suspects are not linked to other housebreakings or house robberies in the area. “We also thank the members of the communityforworkingtogetherwith police in the fight against crime,” she said.

“It is unacceptable. We live like beggars withourfamilieswhilehewalksaroundwith his security guards like a boss.” Another resident, who did not want to be named, said Nzimbomvu had plans to go higher up in eThekwini Municipality. “Itseemslikeallhedoesiscomehereand make promises. He is being paid to lie and act like someone who cares about us.” Speaking to the Weekly Nzimbomvu said he believed other political parties had “poisoned” the township. “We, as councillors, do not decide who gets homes, only the housing department can do this.” He said that 1 850 families were meant to benefit from the Waterloo, Ham monds Farm project, but numbers were an issue in Seatides. “There are new people coming in all the timeandtheyarenotallowingtheoneswho have been here for a long time to get their homes. With people continually coming in to the area, we find it hard to move forward. Ibelievealotofthesenewpeoplehavebeen hampering development and I want to ap peal to the community to speak to me. We need structures in place to avoid these is sues and we must all be of sober mind,” said Nzimbomvu.

On Monday, his wife said he was “feeling stronger” but not able to speak to the press, adding “but he’s feeling better and he managed to lift the arm today.” “He’s had quite a few blood transfusions. Police found three cartridges at the scene but the x-rays show there are two bullets in his arm. He is still too weak to operate on at the moment, maybe by Wednesday.” On Saturday morning Geyser was going to fly planes with a friend and when the friend couldn’t come Geyser decided to go on his own. “They must have seen him going up and then lay in wait along the dirt road,” said his wife. AccordingtoPeterWilson,uMhlanga Model Fliers Club safety officer, the club has been operating at the airfield for around eight years. There is a shade clothed area, a toilet and container for storing a lawnmower.

“We have never had a problem before,” said Wilson. “This seems to be just a criminal element who liked the look of George’s Mercedes.” Wilson has known Geyser since 1971 when they flew model planes in Pietermaritzburg. Both have since

moved to Durban where they met up again in 2005. “At the moment George is good and cheerful - just worried about his arm.” A police spokesperson said that a case of attempted carjacking was being investigated by Verulam SAPS.

WEEKLY

MEC signs pledge

>> Education minister visits Verulam school and joins #bring back our girls campaign WEEKLY REPORTER

K

ZN MEC of Education, Peggy Nkonyeni signed a pledge at Verulam Secondary School on Friday to show her support for the Nigerian School girls who were abducted by the rebel group Boko Haram. Nkonyeni said the department supports the rights for all girls in Africa. “We are showing our support to the school girls in Nigeria who are allegedly being tortured by a vigilante group called Boko Haram. We are pledging our support as South Africans. “These criminals should bring back our children so that they can continue with their education," she said. Principal of Verulam Secondary School, Mr M.I. Ismail, condemned the rebel group for abducting pupils in Nigeria.

"The group has painted a wrong image of Islam. People out there would automatically presume that the Islamic religion is violent and imposes its ideologies on other people. Islam means peace and Muslims are not violent people" he said. Ismail added that he was honoured that the MEC had chosen Verulam Secondary, among all the schools in KZN, to sign the pledge. "I'm honoured that the minister came to our school and signed the pledge with our community, teachers and pupils," he added. African countries and the international community have shown their support to the Nigerian Government and taken to social networks to highlight this. The #Bring Back Our Girls# campaign has seen thousands of people lend their support to the girls, in the hope that Nigerian government would respond under pressure.

A NUMBER of collisions on the North Coast have left dozens injured and onedeadduringtheweek. In the most recent accident a man was critically injured after he was struck by a vehicle on the N2 near the M41 off ramp on Monday morning. According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha when paramedics arrived the found the man lying on the road with multiple injuries. “After the patient, believed to be in his thirties, was stabilised at the scene, he was taken to a local hospital,” said Botha In a separate incident a man was critically injured after he was hit by a car along Ballito Drive on Saturday. One person died in another incident while another sustained serious injuries in a crash on the R102 near King Shaka Internationa Airport (KSIA) at 4am on Thursday. Botha said reports indicated that the vehicle veered off the road after the driver lost control and collided with a tree. The wreckage came to rest down an embankment said Botha. “Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found a critically injured man. “After he was extricated from the vehicle, we worked fervently forsometimetoresuscitate the patient. He died on scene due to the extensive injuries. The other patient was stabilised at the scene and then transported to a nearby hospital.” Another eight people were injured, among them four children aged between three and five, after two taxis collided along the M4 near Sibaya last week. Botha said the two vehicles were travelling north when the one collided into the rear of the other taxi. “After stabilising the injured at the scene, paramedics transported them to a local hospital for the care that they required,” said Botha.

Integrity, Respect, Accountability, Courage

OctoberDecember 2013: 29900

Taking your local media beyond ‘lekker’ I AM not a fan of the media. Rather, Iamnotafanofwhatisincreasingly known as the ‘mainstream media’ (MSM), which can be described as “those media disseminated via the largest distribution channels, which therefore represent what the majority of media consumers are likely to encounter. The term also denotes those media generally reflective of the prevailing currents of thought, influence, or activity.” The emphasis in the last sentence is mine, and it is here that I find most of my frustration with the MSM coming to the fore; not because they reflect the “prevailing currents of thought, influence, or activity”, but because MSM very often dictate these things instead of reflecting them. In other words, mainstream media very often tell us what we shouldbethinkingandsaying and what we should be doing, while local media have a tendency to reflect what we are thinking and saying and what we are doing. This is done irrespective of our thoughts or actions fitting into a politically correct world view which is largely driven by (drumroll) the MSM. It is for this reason that I believe local/community media to be a purer form of news dissemination than national or international MSM. This may also be one of the reasonsthatlocalnewsisoneofthe few growth sectors in print media. Local media have the benefit of intimacy – meaning readers are able to quickly verify articles on issues that take place in their immediate surroundings. This means the ability to hold accountable the newspaper or a quoted source is easier than with

nationalorinternationalstoriesor journalists. Too, local media publish unique copy; stories that are not plastered all over the Internet on an hourly basis via aggregation. For the uninformed, aggregation is the new black when it comes to expeditiously repackaging breaking news, or simply filling daily online copy quotas. Copy quotas are the most recent golden calf for media executives. Driving online traffic through regular copy uploading is intended to whet the appetite of potential online advertisers and thus supplement dwindling print advertising revenue. As for aggregation, it means we have access to the same story over many Internet sites, but the more disturbing factor is the potential for plagiarism and a lessening of accountability.Whoexactlydoyou call if you find an error in a story that has been aggregated and disseminated across 10 online titles? Mainstream media are battling – as their own projections, research and ubiquitous navel-gazing reveal. Cuts in advertising spending due to ‘the economy’ and loss of readership due to social media have had a very real impact on shrinking news rooms and revenue. Despite this, there is also the issue of content which needs to be addressed by our MSM friends. It is time they shift their gaze from their navels and try less superficial introspection when it comes to what they publish, which very often borders on liberal-leaning activism instead of reporting. The word ‘activism’ fits snugly

viewersdonotknowthedifference between activism-journalism and the often banal world of reporting is, of course, just good old-fashioned hubris.

with the word ‘agenda’, which the MSM would do well to remember, given that they are often accused of agendas and bias. And to think that readers or

N commemoration of International Nurses’ Day, Mediclinic Victoria awarded its annual Nursing Excellence Award to ENA Musawankosi Luthuli in recognition of his commitment to the spirit of nursing. International Nurses’ Day is a global tribute to the profession which coincideswithFlorenceNightingale’s birthday in May. Mediclinic Victoria hosted the event at the AFM Church basement to recognise the role their nursing practitioners play in the patient-centred culture. “This year we want to honour our own ‘shining lights’ and celebrate our nurses for being experts in their fields – for how they apply their knowledge and expertise to ensure patient safety and comfort. It is also the day where a nursing practitioner at each hospital is chosen as the Nursing Excel-

lence Award recipient by his peers and patients,” said Estelle Jordaan, nursing executive, Mediclinic Southern Africa. “Although we can only select one person for the award, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge eachofournursing practitioners for their invaluablecontribution to enhancing the quality of life of our patients by providing comprehensive, worldclass care,” she added.

‘Arise’ and join the activities >> Forum prepares for bigger and better Youth Day celebrations WEEKLY REPORTER

T

HE Tongaat Hindu Unity Forum will be pulling out all the stops at their second annual “Arise Awake Fun Run” which is part of their Youth Day celebration on 16 June. Organisers said the 2013 event has inspired them to raise the bar in terms of creating an event that will aptly celebrate South Africa’s 20 Years of Democracy and to spread the strength-enhancing message of Swami Vivekananda to the youth. The forum also aims to highlight

the late former president Nelson Mandela’s legacy in an effort to inspire and empower youth. “Local businesses, religious organisations and the media - including Coastal Weekly - Golden Sun Foodzone, Matla Consulting, Nerusha Perumaul Physiotheraphy, Netcare 911, K9 Security Services, The South African Hindu Maha Sabha and the Shree Sanathan Dharma Sabha of SouthAfricahaveonceagaincomeon board to support the event to ensure that youth and adults alike can partake and enjoy the Youth Day celebrations in a befitting manner,” said

chairman of the Tongaat Hindu Unity Forum Sugie Govender. “Tongaat Panthers Athletic Club will be taking care of all the logics in terms of the race once again,” he added. The organisers’ aim this year is to also cater for all residents. “Those who do not wish to participate in the race can enjoy a number of other sporting activities, such as soccer, netball, volleyball and novelty games, that will also take place at the grounds,” he said. For the spiritually-minded, a special chanting of the Hanuman Chalisa will take place from 8am to 9.10am.

Some of the participants of last year’s Tongaat Hindu Unity Forum fun run. “Here, we commemorate this milestone year and pray for peace, strength and prosperity for all South Africans. A live broadcast by Radio Hindvani will also take place from the venue and the community is encouraged to interact with their favourite presenters who will be broadcasting from 9am,” said Govender. Secretary of the forum Nirosha Govindsamy said: “There are plenty of incentives to participate in the fun

run. All finishers qualify for a medal and commemorative t-shirt.” Special prizes are also up for grabs to the school with the most number of entries. Entry forms are available from the Coastal Weekly offices, schools and temples as well as on the morning of the race from the venue at Outspan Grounds. Govindsamy said the entry fee is a donation of R5. For more details, email thuf108@gmail.com or call 073 356 5918 or 083 787 7510 .

Locals excel in Comrades >> Medals galore for runners and great achievements celebrated at local clubs

OCAL athletics clubs excelled at the coveted 89th Comrades Marathon that took place on Sunday, 1 June. TwosilverMedals, sevenBillRowanMedals, nine bronze medals, and twelve Vic Clapham medals made Verulam Athletic Clubs (VAC) medal count a memorable achievement for the long standing club while leading Falcons runner was Ndwedwe athlete Derrick Gumede who made it two silvers in a row on his second race. HewasfollowedbyFalconsstalwartVukaniMa phumulo from Thandanani who also notched up a silver medal. Bongiwe Majozi, Judy Reddy and Mar lene Pillay were the leading Falcons ladies in a time of 10.43. However, the day belonged to the new Green Number Club for securing 10 Comrades medal, this included David Mfeka, Preggie Moodley and Yvonne Dalgleish. This augurs well for Falcons development pr gramme which not only brought in new runners like Derrick Gumede into ultradistance running but it has been able to sustain the runners to achieving Green Num ber status. Specialaccoladesal so are extended to Pru dence Ngiba who had completed her first Comrades Marathon. Derrick Gumede, Cin deera Padavatan and Vitasha Ramnarayan secured backtoback medals for completing consecutive marathons as novices. For VAC the superbly conditioned Muziwakhe Khanyile broke the VAC record book with a sub seven hour 6.49 finish in a back to back silver double ahead of Siyan da Makhanya a triple consecutive silver med alist, himself breaking his own personal best in 7.01. The beaming duo were all smiles at their personal milestones and remarked “a long rest before we conquer the 90th edition next year”. AvastlyimprovedSi fiso Mbonambi knocked off nearly an hour off his up run, clearly showing that he preferred the down run in a superla tive time of 7.54.

T

HE massive Tongaat sporting community watched with pride as one of “our own”, Hashim Amla, was announced the captain of the South African cricket test team this week. The announcement came in Johannesburg on Tuesday, 3 June that the former Tongaat resident and Railways Cricket Club and Sunfoil Dolphins stalwart would replace Graeme Smith at the helm. The former DHS pupil is the fifth appointed captain of the Proteas. AmlafollowsinthefootstepsofKeplerWessels, Hansie Cronje, Shaun Pollock and Smith as the squad's skipper, although Mark Boucher,JacquesKallisandAshwellPrincehavealso led the team in a stand in capacity. In his new appointment Amla will lead South Africa for a two match series in Sri Lanka next month. The 31-year-old was the first South African batsman to score a triple century in a test match. CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat said Amla has shown his steel when occupying the number three slot in the order. He said becoming captain is the natural progression in Amla's career. Tonver president Guru Ramcharan said Amla was performing admirably with a bat and it was only natural that he goes up the ladder to take the position of captain. “It is indeed the highest honour to lead our country in any code of sport. Hashim was destined to be a captain. The sporting fraternity of Tongaat wishes Amla well and we know he will do the country proud.” Deven Naidoo coach and former mentor of Amla who was instrumental in his cricket career was ecstatic with Amla's achievements and said this was long overdue.
