Textile workers fight for increase >> Resolution reached after fourday shutdown

EXTILE workers at JMV Textiles based in Verulam went on strike on Thursday and Friday demandingimprovedworkingconditions and wages. The matter has since been resolved with workers receiving a 9 per cent increase this year and 7.5 per cent for next year. Workers initially demanded 13 per cent for this year. They thereafter came down to 10 per cent. The employer first offered just 6.5 per cent. On Friday morning, the Weekly attended the protest as negotiations ensued inside the factory between unions and the employer Mr JMV Valjee. Workers said that even though they are loyal to the company, they do
not receive compensation for their hard work. A long time employee, 62-yearold, whose identity is known to the Weekly, said he had been at the company for 29 years and was appalled that they were initially offered so little. “I have to say it was sad to realise they think this much of us. This is a family business and all of them drive fancy cars, own properties all over and do not even want to give us some breathing room for basic living expenses. “Right now our wages are R800 whileotherfactoriesofthisnatureare receiving R1 000 per week. This is the biggest factory in the business and each operator has to man five machines. Normally it should be two machines.”
JMV Textiles manufactures raw fabric materials. Another employee of 27 years, said the situation was “madness”. “Here is the truth. We work very hard and earn peanuts for that hard work. They are a family company and only think of themselves, not us. We arenotpartofthefamily.Theworkers built this factory.” An employee of 16 years, said he felt bad for the whole situation. “They change cars every two to threeyearsandherewearejusttrying to get by and we have to strike for a small increase. We are the backbone of this place and we are not treated as such.” Workers added that the whole factory needed to be upgraded saying their equipment was not always up to standard.
