Wow, hard to believe it’s already June! As they say, time flies when you’re having fun, and I think it’s safe to say a great time was had by most throughout our busy season here at PPCC. Most recently during our season finale El Cannip Gentlemen’s Member-Member, which saw Mark Kuntz & Wayne Yakich emerge as both tournament champions, and from the El Cannip swimming hole behind the 9th green after their triumphant plunge! Thank you to all who played for making it a memorable event.

As we move into our warmer summer months, we hope you plan to take advantage of our extended daylight hours to get in a few extra holes. We have once again put together an extensive list of summer reciprocal golf opportunities at surrounding Valley clubs for you to enjoy. Please call the Golf Shop, and we will be happy to assist in making reciprocal times for you.

Our Men’s Summer Derby is also back after a two-year hiatus during Covid and our bunker renovation.

This 9-hole, pure-alternate-shot competition begins each Thursday with the team drawing at 4:45 PM and 5 PM shotgun start. Registrations are taken the day of play only, and not in advance. PPCC Members may host up to two guests each week for cart fees only, no guest fee.

Junior Summer Camps are also back this summer, with three camps in June and more in July, should there be interest. Space is filling up quickly, so register your junior golfers soon to make sure they have a spot. Registration is available on ForeTees under the events tab. We look forward to teaching our future golfers!

For those of you who depart for cooler temperatures over the summer, we wish you the best and look forward to your return. For those of us who are here year-round, just remember, it’s a dry heat!

JUNIOR GOLF SKILLS:

Tailored for beginners and intermediate players 6-15 years old, the program features instruction in all areas of the game including swing mechanics, putting and short game, rules of golf, etiquette and creativity. Curriculum is built and designed around the US Kids Player Performance Program.

Students are coached the fundamentals while playing friendly competitions.

SeasonHIGHLIGHTS Thanks to all who played or joined us for lunch this year. We had 20 new members join us this season and an average of 35-40 players each week, which is up from an average of 25 in recent years. We love all the new energy in our league!

We thank our fun and friendly golf pro, Tyler James, for always making our league play enjoyable. He did a fabulous job pairing people, managing last-minute changes, and even dressing up for our Member-Guest Day in theme attire!

The Member-Guest Tournament theme, Birdie Days & Boogie Nights, chaired by Debbie Narajowski and assisted by Ann-Louise Ciminelli and Wendy Brady, was a huge success!

Fifty-nine golfers played, and everyone had fun dressing up in theme attire that day. Thank you ladies for all your hard work!!

The NINERs would like to thank everyone on the PPCC staff who worked tirelessly on Monday mornings to make our league a success. We especially thank Chef Brandon and Mike Lyons for enthusiastically dialing-up our special events several notches with wonderful food/drink offerings.

Denise Small once again chaired Play For Pink and it was a smashing success. They raised $33,400 for cancer research.

The Member-Member tournament was held over two consecutive Mondays, and included both the front and back nines.

As the temperatures begin to rise and many people leave the Valley for cooler climates, we would like to thank our members and staff for providing such a great winter season!

The Club remains just slightly ahead of our operating budget midway through our fiscal year. We are pleased with these results considering the increases we have experienced in labor and operating expenses. These increases will be considered in our budget preparation for the 2022-2023 year. Given the quality of our golf course and the Valley-wide increase in golf fees, we raised our summer guest rate from $70 to $90, including golf cart. Family guests continue to receive 50% guest-fee discounts. The Club continues to operate at capacity, with approximately 90 people waiting for golf memberships and 25 for social memberships; meanwhile, we are experiencing a decline in resignations. While nobody can predict how long the wait will be for a membership or future membership pricing, the BOD has stopped reserving memberships for applicants until further notice.

As you may know, Arizona and most of the west suffers from prolonged drought conditions. The Arizona Division of Water Resources (ADWR) has slightly reduced the amount of water that area golf courses may use, which should not impact our conditions. We are closely monitoring this situation along with the Arizona Alliance for Golf (azallianceforgolf.org) to be sure our voices are heard.

The only capital project scheduled for this summer is to replace the septic system tank that services the on-course restroom on hole No. 4 and the golf course maintenance building. We purchased much-needed golf course maintenance equipment for mowing greens, tees and fairways. We’re also considering new pool-area furniture and shade structures.

We hope you enjoyed the spring tournament season and the alwayspopular, end-of-season parties! Please join me in recognizing and thanking our fabulous staff. Over the last two years, they have been incredible in managing many issues related to Covid, the diminishing supply of a workforce, and shortages of essential products.

As we head into summer, I would like to provide you with more information about our annual golf course closure from Monday, July 11 through Thursday, July 21. We will verticut fairways, green surrounds, and roughs two times during this year's closure. Verticut and dethatch tee complexes, aprons, and approaches with a walk graden, and top-dress approaches with sand. Aerify the disrupted areas around the new bunkers, and top dress with almost 250 tons of sand. This closure allows the agronomy team to limit disruptive practices to just nine days versus six weeks when open, and it enables the golf course to heal over a shorter timeframe during some of the hottest days of the summer.

I am also pleased to announce we have hired a new facilities maintenance manager, Bill Hetzel. Bill spent several years in the Chicago area, where he managed facilities for highly amenitized residential condominiums. In 2014 he relocated to Arizona, and spent the last eight years working for ASU, overseeing multiple residential life facilities such as dorms, cafeterias, and recreational amenities. We look forward to working with Bill.

Unfortunately, this year's 4th of July celebration will not include fireworks. Our vender is unable to take any reservations due to a lack of available inventory of professional-grade fireworks. However, we will have a traditional barbecue to celebrate. We are trying to confirm fireworks for our PPCC Homecoming Party scheduled for Friday, October 28. Note that the golf course will reopen from overseeding on Friday, October 21.
