This Park is Bumpin’!

New pump track opens near Quidi Vidi Lake

Last October, the City of St. John’s and Avalon Mountain Bike Association announced the grand opening of the first pump track in St. John’s at Quidi Vidi Park. Constructed with support from Canary Cycles, the paved track is a fun way to develop cycling and riding skills for all ages and abilities.

This brand-new facility is bound to be bumping this summer.

A pump track is a continuous loop of berms and “rollers” (paved mounds) where riders use an up and down pumping motion to propel themselves forward instead of pedaling or pushing. It is most suitable for bicycles and skateboards. It can also be used by other non-motorized equipment like scooters.

Grab your wheels and head to Quidi Vidi Park to try something different this year!

Users are reminded to always wear a helmet and follow the primary direction of travel around the track. Hours of operation are between sunrise and sunset. Please remember to respect all users of this facility.

5 CITY GUIDE | SUMMER 2023

2023 Cruise Ship Season

The City of St. John’s is excited to welcome approximately 36 cruise ships this summer which includes five inaugural ships and three ships with an overnight stay. The first cruise ship of the season, the Norwegian Dawn, is schedule to arrive on April 24 with approximately 3,000 passengers.

The City works collaboratively with the St. John’s Port Authority, Cruise NL and local tourism and hospitality partners to ensure visitors have an enjoyable experience in St. John’s. This includes a dockside welcome with a temporary taxi stand, musical entertainment, Newfoundland dogs and local volunteer ambassadors.

The economic impact of these visits, particular on home port and overnight stays, are not only felt in the tourism and hospitality industry but across a wide range of industries throughout the region.

Parking is limited on Harbour Drive during cruise ship visits to accommodate tour operators and other passenger transportation. However, parking remains available in other areas throughout the downtown.

Please note: cruise ship visits may be cancelled or postponed at any time due to unforeseen circumstances, including marine conditions and ship schedules.

For up-to-date cruise schedules visit: StJohns.ca/Cruise or call the cruise information line at 709-576-8333.

6 CITY GUIDE | SUMMER 2023

Local Volunteers Play an Important Role

For over 20 years, the award-winning Ambassador program has played an essential role in welcoming cruise passengers to our city. Ambassadors are local volunteers and are the first to greet passengers and crew upon arrival in the Port of St. John’s. They are located dockside to provide maps, tourism information, directions and to answer any questions. There are about 20 volunteers who are a part of the Ambassador program who are known for going above and beyond to ensure the passengers and crew have a memorable stay in St. John’s.

The City of St. John’s is looking for volunteers to join the Ambassador program. If you are a people person and passionate about all that our city has to offer, please reach out to Kim Cooper at kcooper@stjohns.ca. The next training session is scheduled for May 2023.

Newfoundland, Old Found Paint

Submitted by Product Care Recycling

A corny pun makes for a happy planet. Last year in Newfoundland and Labrador, 77% of households purchased interior and exterior paint - that’s a lot of people painting. To top (coat) it off, 84% of those who purchased paint had some leftover.

To the 84% with leftover paint - did you know it’s recyclable?

At Product Care Recycling, we can help you do your part for the planet by providing FREE paint recycling services, with over 45 locations across the province. Simply find your nearest paint recycling location from our website ProductCare.org and drop it off for free.

Even better, did you know some leftover paint may be eligible for reuse though Product Care’s PaintShare program? Others in your community can then pick up paint you’ve donated for free for their own projects. They can save money, you can reduce your waste, and we can all feel a little better about ourselves and our environment. Sounds like a win-winwin!

If you’re still having trouble deciding if your leftover paint makes a difference, picture this: if we gathered the 143,896 litres of recycled paint collected by Product Care in Newfoundland and Labrador this past year, that would be enough to paint 5,410 houses. That’s a lot of leftover paint diverted from landfills and waterways!

While you might think your individual contribution may seem small, every litre of paint counts towards the many thousands of litres collected each year. Recycling paint is easy, free, and helps make our community (and our planet) a better place.

To find a paint recycling location near you or to learn more about paint recycling, our PaintShare initiative and other services Product Care Recycling offers, visit ProductCare.org.

Yard & Organic Waste

For more details

Mulch Grass and Leaves

There’s no need to rake grass clippings or fallen leaves, just mulch them with your mower. The grass clippings and leaves provide nutrients to the soil and help retain moisture requiring less watering and fertilizer for a healthy lawn.

Mow and go and spend your extra time doing the things you enjoy!

Yard Waste

From May to November each year, all yard waste placed at the curb for collection must be in paper yard waste bags. Yard waste bags are collected every second week, on the same day as your recycling.

Paper yard waste bags can also be dropped off at the Residential Drop Off at Robin Hood Bay, open Tuesday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

DID YOU KNOW?

Since 2018, we have composted more than 6,000 tonnes of yard waste, which has reduced our GHG emssions by 180 tonnes.

Backyard Composting

The City of St. John’s, in partnership with the MUN Botanical Garden and MMSB, offers basic introductory sessions about backyard composting. Once completed St. John’s residents can purchase a reduced-price 140 litre (37 gallon) backyard compost tumbler bin for $75 taxes included. Note that other bin types and sizes are currently unavailable.

The backyard composting sessions are offered in-person (1 hour) from spring to fall and the online session is available at any time.

2023 in-person sessions:

Join the Curbside Recycling Revolution

Protecting our planet is everyone’s business and recycling at home is an easy way to make a big difference.

We all have a role to play, which is why we are proud to partner with the MMSB to increase curbside recycling in our community and province through the new Recycle @ Home campaign.

Recycle @ Home provides tips and resources to answer your questions about curbside recycling and help you make a difference.

You’re already putting your waste at the curb anyway - why not put recyclable materials to their next best use?

We recycle over 19 million pounds of curbside material every year right here in Newfoundland & Labrador - and we could do a whole lot more if we all did our part!

Learn more at RecycleAtHomeNL.ca

The cardboard and paper products in your curbside recycling really add up - each envelope, egg carton and food box placed in a blue bag brings us one step closer to a greener planet.

From shampoo bottles to tin cans and milk cartons, tons of everyday containers can be recycled right at the curb. Help your recycling reach its potentialRecycle @ Home!

Join EngageStJohns.ca today

City staff and Council make hundreds of decisions every day. While many are simple day-to-day operating decisions, others are more complex. The City uses public engagement tools to get feedback from stakeholders when decisions might impact them. That’s why the City implemented an engagement policy in 2014 to guide public engagement work and then launched EngageStJohns.ca in 2015 to make providing feedback as easy as possible.

There are currently 3,868 active members on EngageStJohns.ca, 169 of whom are 18 to 30-year-olds on our youth panel. Since EngageStJohns.ca was launched eight years ago, more than 3,400 pieces of feedback have been received on 120 projects including: the Downtown Pedestrian Mall, H.G.R. Mews Community Centre, Traffic Calming Policy, the City’s Cycling Plan, and Planning applications, to name a few.

We heard through our 2022 Resident survey that only 51% of residents feel the City allows for meaningful input and only 13% indicated they had used EngageStJohns.ca to provide feedback. We want to improve those numbers so get involved and sign up today.

To register or join the youth panel visit EngageStJohns.ca or scan the QR Code at right.

Become a registered member today to:

• receive direct notification right to your email when new projects are added that matter to you

• get access to a variety of online tools to leave your feedback in one place including registering for upcoming meetings

• see what other people are saying about projects

• follow projects and get updates on recommendations going to Council or changes to project timelines or scope

• receive a copy of What We Heard once engagement has concluded

• For the Youth Panel, get exclusive access to surveys designed just for 18 to 30 year-olds with chances to win prizes for participation, you can also sign up for notifications via text message

Strategic Plan Progress

Our City, Our Future is the City’s 10-year strategic plan. To date, 114 initiatives have been completed. This year, we’ve added 39 new initiatives, including improving the reliability of the public transit service by upgrading the communications system; and advancing a digital strategy for online service delivery.

To learn more about the strategic plan and to track our progress in real time, visit StJohns.ca/OurCityOurFuture.

Here’s a small sample of initiatives completed in 2022.

CONNECTED CITY

GOAL: Increase and improve opportunities for residents to connect with each other and the City.

Youth Engagement Panel

With 169 members aged 18 to 30, the online Youth Engagement Panel provided feedback on a variety of topics including: indicators of a livable city, affordable housing, elections, employment, disaster and emergency preparedness, Metrobus and social media. Results are shared with relevant staff and posted online.

EFFECTIVE CITY

GOAL: Achieve service excellence through collaboration, innovation and modernization grounded in client needs.

Resident Satisfaction Survey

The survey is one way Council seeks input from residents on how the City is performing. The sample size was increased from 500 to 600 surveys for 2022 to better measure the opinions of smaller subsets of the population. The report was shared with Council in November 2022 and is available at StJohns.ca.

CITY THAT MOVES

GOAL: Expand and maintain a safe and accessible active transportation network.

Shared Use Paths

In the Resident Satisfaction Survey, cycling infrastructure was identified as a top three priority for capital spending. Concepts for the Canada Drive route were presented through public engagement and Council approved the design; construction begins this year.

SUSTAINABLE CITY

GOAL: Work collaboratively to create a climate-adapted and low-carbon city.

Resilient St John’s Community Climate Plan

Developed through best practice reviews and local engagement, the plan identifies a 30-year strategy with specific actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while re-enforcing efforts to stabilize energy costs through energy efficiency. Installing public EV chargers was one success from 2022.

15 CITY GUIDE | SUMMER 2023

Water Conservation

The City of St. John’s encourages residents to use water wisely. Water consumption in the St. John’s region increases during the summer, primarily due to the outdoor use of water such as lawn watering and car washing.

There are many things you can do at home to conserve water.

In the Kitchen:

• Scrape your dishes instead of using the pre-wash cycle in the dishwasher.

• When cleaning vegetables, turn the faucet off and rinse them in the sink with the drain closed or in a pan of water.

• If you wash dishes by hand, do not leave the faucet flowing for rinsing. Instead, use a dish rack and spray device. If you have two sinks, fill one to use for rinsing.

• Use a jug to keep water cool in the refrigerator instead of letting the tap run. This can also help improve the taste of your water.

In the bathroom:

• If the shower has a single hand control or shut off valve, turn off the flow while soaping or shampooing.

• Take short showers instead of baths.

• Don’t let the faucet flow while brushing your teeth or shaving.

Outdoors:

• When watering your lawn or plants, use a hose shut-off nozzle so that water flows only as needed. When finished, turn it off at the faucet instead of at the nozzle to avoid leaks.

2024 Assessment Notices

• Check hose connectors to make sure plastic or rubber washers are in place to avoid leaks.

• Do not leave sprinklers or hoses unattended, a garden hose can discharge 2,500 litres or more in just one hour. Use a timer.

• Water your garden during the coolest part of the day and do not water on windy days.

• If you wash your own car, use a hose with an automatic shut-off nozzle.

Property owners in the City of St. John’s will be receiving a new assessment of their property in their mailbox in June 2023. The assessment received in June will be used to determine property taxes for 2024 and 2025.

16 CITY GUIDE | SUMMER 2023

THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER PUT DOWN THE DRAIN or FLUSH DOWN THE TOILET

Flushable wipes are the most common and biggest problem. Wipes should not be flushed down the toilet as they don’t break down. Place them in the garbage and not down the toilet.

Only the 3Ps should be flushed – Pee, Poo and toilet Paper. A number of items that are flushed every day by residents cause problems in every step of our wastewater system, from the pipes in your house to the Riverhead Wastewater Treatment Facility.

17 CITY GUIDE | SUMMER 2023

Community Gardens – Let’s Grow!

A community garden is a space where residents get together to plant and harvest a garden. Some gardens have communal plots where everybody shares the space, others have individual plots for each gardener and some have a combination of both. All these options allow community members to grow their own food with experienced and beginner gardeners learning together side by side.

With food insecurity and food prices on the rise, more people are coming together in community gardens to create space in their neighbourhood to grow vegetables, fruit and herbs. There are plenty of crops such as potatoes, tomatoes and lettuce that can be successfully grown outdoors right here in St. John’s to help take a bite out of your food budget.

A community garden offers benefits beyond the boundaries of the garden and the healthy foods being grown.

Neighbourhood connections are also growing in the garden as gardeners engage in their tasks alongside their friends and neighbours. These relationships help build a sense of belonging in the community and a sense of place where everyone feels welcome and will want to return to.

If you know of a place in your neighbourhood suitable for a community garden and have a group of friends or neighbours who are interested in growing their own food, reach out to us to start your community garden today.

Email us at healthycommunities@stjohns.ca to start the process of turning your vision of a community garden into a reality.

19 CITY GUIDE | SUMMER 2023

20 Years of REAL Success

The REAL Program has been offering recreation and leisure experiences to St. John’s children and youth in financial need for over 20 years. The REAL Program has made over 30,000 placements, allowing children and youth to participate in their desired program. These placements would not be possible without the support from our partners and sponsors.

REAL People – REAL Need

United Way, VOCM Cares Foundation and Sandbox Gaming have provided the REAL Program with funding over the years and continue to help REAL break down financial barriers to participation. We would like to thank all our recreation and funding partners that have showed their continued support to children in need.

As the economy changes, and more families find themselves struggling, the need for REAL Program support is increasing. The REAL Program is a non-profit program that relies on sourcing funds through grants, fundraisers and donations. The City of St. John’s provides office space and staff support so that 100% of all funds raised or donated go to the cost of programs, equipment and transportation for applicants.

8 Great Ways to Enjoy Your Neighbourhood Parks

Did you know, the City has over 140 municipal, community and neighbourhood parks? Our parks have playgrounds, splash pads, basketball courts, tennis courts, skate parks and so much more.

Green spaces in our neighbourhoods give us places to explore, gather, spend time with friends and be physically active. Looking for activities to do this summer? Here’s eight great ideas to get you started.

1. Pack a Picnic: Pack a lunch and have a picnic in Bannerman Park. With a playground, splash pad and pool on site, there’s fun for the whole family.

2. Hoop it Up: Have a game of 21, Horse, Bump or 3 on 3 in Century Park, located in the centre of the City.

3. Host Your Own Olympics: Chafes Lane Park is a great place to try tennis, softball, basketball or even grounders. See if you can play one fun game in each area!

4. Grind it Out: Grab your skateboards or scooters and enjoy one of the biggest skate parks in the city - Kenmount Terrace Kids can cool off in the splash pad afterwards or enjoy the playground.

5. Connect with Nature: Take a mindful nature walk through the surrounding trails at Denis Lawlor Park. Take time to unwind, disconnect and unplug for your health.

6. Take a Power Position: Grab some friends, a frisbee, line markers and pylons or a rope and head to Larch Park, which has lots of open space making it the “ultimate” frisbee location.

7. Walk and Play: Take a walk around Mundy Pond and stop to enjoy the inclusive Jumpstart Playground with over 1,025 square metres of play space for children of all ages and abilities.

8. Plan the Perfect Day of Adventure: In Bowring Park the options are endless! Plan a day of adventure and enjoy the numerous nature trails, try out the skate park, have a game of tennis, play at the playground and splash pad and go for a swim.

There are so many ways for residents and visitors to relax and enjoy nature in our city. For a list of all City parks, playgrounds and trails visit StJohns.ca/Parks

Coping with the Loss of a Pet

The loss of a pet can be a truly heartbreaking experience, like losing a dear friend or family member. It’s normal to go through a grieving process when your pet passes away and to have feelings of guilt, sadness and even relief when making the decision to euthanize. In some cases, especially if the loss was sudden, symptoms of posttraumatic stress can occur.

Talking to children who have lost a pet

It’s important to be honest with children. Use ageappropriate language, let them know its normal to be sad and invite them to talk about their feelings. It can also help to let them know that you feel sad too. With older children, you may want to involve them in the decision to euthanize.

Tips to help with pet loss

y Don’t downplay your loss or the role your pet played in your life. It’s ok to cry, grieve and take the time you need to heal.

y Talk about your loss with friends, family or a mental health professional.

y Write a goodbye letter or have a goodbye ceremony. This could be as simple as leaving a painted rock on their favourite walking trail or hanging a picture ornament on the Christmas Tree.

y Make a memorial donation to a group you support. It may help to give gratitude for the love your pet gave you and to extend that good will onto others.

y Seek additional help.

There are many online communities and grief or bereavement resources that can help with dealing with the loss of your pet.

If you have thoughts of self-harm or are in immediate mental distress, please call the Mental Health Crisis Line at 811.

Downtown Street Cleaning

Street cleaning removes dirt and debris from streets, reduces the amount of debris going into storm sewers and helps prevent damage to infrastructure.

Street Cleaning Schedule

Downtown street cleaning operations take place overnight between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and is scheduled from Sunday, April 30 to Friday, Sept. 22, 2023.

Unlike snow removal, the downtown street cleaning schedule is pre-determined for the entire season. It is the driver’s responsibility to look up when the street is scheduled for cleaning and to move their vehicle(s) accordingly; the City does not post signs for street cleaning.

On the scheduled street cleaning dates, vehicles must be removed from the affected streets by 10 p.m. and cannot be returned until after 6 a.m. the following morning, regardless of whether street cleaning has taken place. Failure to remove the vehicle may result in a ticket being issued.

Streets may not be cleaned as scheduled for reasons such as parked cars, extreme weather, mechanical issues or other unforeseen circumstances.

BBQ Fire Safety

Enjoy a hot summer without getting burned! During barbecue season, these tips from St. John’s Regional Fire Department could keep you safe.

• Ensure new barbeques are properly assembled. Read the owner’s manual and store somewhere for easy reference.

• Keep your grill clean. Periodically remove grease or fat build up in the trays below so it won’t cause a fire.

• Ensure the lid is open before lighting it.

• Keep a safe distance from your deck railings, house and structures and do not use under overhangs. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the minimum distance requirements.

• Keep children and pets away from grills. Declare a 1 metre (3 feet) “safe zone” around the grill.

• Only use propane and charcoal barbecue grills outdoors.

• Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use and never leave it unattended.

• When you are finished barbecuing, turn off the propane tank cylinder valve first, then the on/off valve on the barbecue. This will prevent propane from becoming trapped in the hose.

• Never store propane cylinders indoors.

• If using a charcoal grill, allow coals to cool completely, and then dispose of them in a metal container with a metal lid and store away from your home.

• Make sure the hose connection on a gas grill is tight and check periodically for leaks. You can apply soapy water and if there is a leak, bubbles will appear. If there is a leak and there is no flame, turn off both the gas tank and the grill. If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak does not stop, call the fire department.

• If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill. If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least five minutes before re-lighting it.
