A community garden is a space where residents get together to plant and harvest a garden. Some gardens have communal plots where everybody shares the space, others have individual plots for each gardener and some have a combination of both. All these options allow community members to grow their own food with experienced and beginner gardeners learning together side by side.

With food insecurity and food prices on the rise, more people are coming together in community gardens to create space in their neighbourhood to grow vegetables, fruit and herbs. There are plenty of crops such as potatoes, tomatoes and lettuce that can be successfully grown outdoors right here in St. John’s to help take a bite out of your food budget.

A community garden offers benefits beyond the boundaries of the garden and the healthy foods being grown.

Neighbourhood connections are also growing in the garden as gardeners engage in their tasks alongside their friends and neighbours. These relationships help build a sense of belonging in the community and a sense of place where everyone feels welcome and will want to return to.

If you know of a place in your neighbourhood suitable for a community garden and have a group of friends or neighbours who are interested in growing their own food, reach out to us to start your community garden today.
