In August, our coast saw some effects from Hurricane Erin as it passed the state of Florida. The most significant impacts of Erin that we saw were dangerous surf and a high risk for rip currents. Watch the video below to learn more about rip currents and how you can protect yourself from them.

As we head further into this year's hurricane season, it's important to remember to stay prepared. See some preparedness tips below, and be sure to follow the City of Sebastian on social media for critical weather updates.

CITY CLERK

Section 5.03 of the City of Sebastian Charter provides for the creation of a fifteen-member Charter Review Committee (CRC) every five years to ensure the City's Charter remains effective and relevant to the needs of the community. During these meetings, members suggest potential amendments and propose updates as needed. Membership of the CRC is by appointment by the City Council.

Interested residents must have been a City resident for one year prior to application and submit a resume of relevant experience.

There shall be no limit on the number of times a resident may serve on this committee, nor shall any member of another City board or committee be prohibited from concurrently serving on this committee.

If appointed, members will be subject to compliance with Florida's Sunshine, Public Records, and Ethics Law.

Committee members will meet following the formation of its membership and then regularly or as needed throughout the review process, which shall end no later than Summer 2026 and will be formally disbanded by the City Council upon receipt of the Committee's recommendation.

Applications may be downloaded from the City’s website or picked up from the City Clerk’s office, between the hours of 8 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. The Clerk’s office is located at 1225 Main Street, Sebastian. Applications will be accepted until November 3, 2025.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and the City is kicking things off early with a focus on keeping children safe online. The digital world offers countless opportunities for learning and fun, but it also comes with new risks that parents and guardians need to be aware of. Children face potential threats such as cyberbullying, scams, and exposure to inappropriate content. By staying informed and proactive, families can help ensure that their children have a positive and secure experience online.

Tips for Parents & Guardians

Set privacy controls | Check your child’s apps, games, and social media accounts and set them to private.

Protect personal information | Remind children never to share addresses, phone numbers, or school details online.

Be careful with chat features | Many games and apps have messaging functions. Encourage kids to only interact with people they know.

Use parental controls and filters | Most devices, streaming platforms, and internet providers have tools to block inappropriate content and manage screen time.

Review apps before installation | Check app ratings, reviews, and requested permissions before approving downloads.

Teach critical thinking | Remind children that not everything online is true and not everyone is who they claim to be.

Update devices regularly | Phones, tablets, and computers should have the latest security updates installed.

Model safe behavior | Show children healthy digital habits, such as avoiding oversharing and putting devices away during meals.

Watch for Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying can happen through texts, social media, or games. Warning signs may include sudden changes in mood, reluctance to use devices, or withdrawal from activities. If you suspect cyberbullying, talk to your child, document the incidents, and seek support from your child's school or local community resources.

AUGUST ROUNDS

AIRPORT

UPDATES

The upgrading of airport protective netting has been completed. This project involved upgrading the existing netting placed behind the new Hangar D, located between the building and the golf course. The existing barrier, at 30’ high, was insufficient to prevent golf balls from coming into the hangar ramp area, causing damage and potential injuries around a working aviation business. The upgrade has increased the height of the barrier to 50’, and added 50’x50’section to the northern end of the barrier system. The new poles and netting have been secured to the existing barriers, making them more effective and efficient in preventing stray golf balls from entering the airport property. The work was completed by contractor Ball Fabrics and funded by an FDOT grant and the City of Sebastian.
