MUNICIPALCLERKSWEEK
May 4-10 is the 56th Annual Municipal Clerks Week, designated by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. This week is meant to increase the public’s awareness of the vital services that Municipal Clerks provide for local government and the community.
Municipal clerks are dedicated professionals with exceptional perception, judgment, and reasoning skills used to retain and recall official actions and discussions of their local government leadership. They must pay strict attention to detail, have exemplary organizational skills, and have the dexterity to coordinate unforeseen and never-ending changes. They can be considered the hub of local government and the link between the residents and their governmental departments, community leaders, and legislators.
My core duties include keeping a journal of City Council proceedings, codifying the enacted laws, administering the board appointment process, and conducting the City’s election with Indian River County Supervisor of Elections Leslie Swan.
There are 388 Municipal Clerks in Florida’s 411 cities, towns, and villages. We are a tight-knit group that stays in touch. I look forward to a networking luncheon in a few weeks with my fellow Indian River County Clerks to discuss adopted state legislation, share ideas, and prepare for the upcoming election.
If we haven't met, please say he llo at the next council meeting. Until then, join me in saying, “Hurrah for Florida’s Amazing City Clerks!”

The Annual Earth Day event took place on Saturday, April 26th at Riverview Park, with over ninety vendors participating and an estimated 1,000 people in attendance. This event is a collaborative effort with many non-profits and the Natural Resources Board to educate the public about the importance of protecting the environment and how one can do their part to be mindful stewards of the environment. This was in addition to ORCA planting a buffered shoreline along the Indian River Lagoon Bank, which will help promote the health of the Lagoon for years to come by encouraging native habitats and filtering pollutants. Waste Management was also in attendance, and residents were given an opportunity to recycle items such as electronics and white papers.

In today's digital age, scam text messages are becoming increasingly common. These messages can lead to serious problems like identity theft and financial losses. Because of this, it's vital to stay informed and watchful to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Here are some valuable tips to help you deal with scam texts effectively.
Have you ever received a text that felt a little off? Recognizing the signs of a scam text is essential, especially since they often disguise themselves as messages from familiar companies like Amazon, UPS, or your bank. They try to create a sense of urgency to get you to act fast, using phrases like "Your account is locked!" or "Claim your prize now!" Take a moment to review the entire message; if a link seems strange or doesn't match the company's official website, it’s wise to be cautious.
Most smartphones have features to block unwanted messages. For instance, if you're using an iPhone, all you need to do is tap on the message, select the number or name at the top, and hit "Block this Caller." Android users can block numbers through the message menu. Scammers may change numbers frequently, but blocking those you know can help reduce the hassle.
Before blocking the message, you can help others by reporting these scam texts. This small step can help prevent the problem from spreading. If you see something suspicious, you can forward those texts to 7726, which is easily remembered as "SPAM" on your keypad. It's also helpful to report them to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Your efforts can make a difference for others in the community.
If you accidentally click on a suspicious link or share personal information, acting quickly is essential. Change your passwords immediately, especially for sensitive accounts like email and banking. If you think your financial information might be compromised, don't hesitate to contact your bank immediately. Keeping an eye on your credit and setting up fraud alerts can also help protect you.
Let's keep spreading the word about scam texts to keep our community safe. Please encourage your friends and family to stay alert, ignore suspicious messages, and report any scams they come across. If a message seems urgent, unbelievable, or too good to be true, it probably is. Together, we can protect our community from these threats.
The Sebastian Municipal Golf Course did 6,122 rounds in April, bringing in $207,793.
This is the new/upgraded Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) for Sebastian Municipal Airport. The system was made possible with a grant from FDOT, and carries the very latest weather sensor capabilities, including Windspeed & Direction, Cloud Ceilings, Visibility, Barometric Pressure, and Lightning Detection. Local and incoming pilots use these reporting systems to determine weather conditions for flight planning in and around the Sebastian airport. They can access the data directly via recorded messages on a specific flight frequency or by phone. This system also uploads our weather parameters to the National Airspace Data Interchange Network (NADIN), which then disseminates Flight Plan Data to Flight Service Stations, Air Route Traffic Control Centers, US Military Base Operations, and International Civil Aviation Authorities. Our data updates constantly to ensure the information is always fresh and relevant. DBT Transportation Services installed the AWOS in mid-April, with FAA oversight.
