February was full of fun events, from the Great Air Potato Round-Up to the Chamber of Commerce’s Concerts in the Park. Check out some of the photos from last month’s concert on February 26 below.

With March coming, even more fun is ahead. See this month’s calendar of events beginning on page 6.

In February, Parks and Recreation launched a new campaign for residents. The SeeMyLegacy Program allows residents to purchase memorial bricks and benches and sponsor functional art within the city. Learn more about how to do so on page 11.

CITY CLERK

HOWCANIPARTICIPATE?

Now that I know how to find out when meetings are, how can I participate?

Residents are always welcome to attend meetings in person. Attending meetings gives you a front-row seat to the workings of your city government. You will see what issues are being discussed and what the Council is working on to make Sebastian a nicer place to live.

Every meeting is open to the public and includes a time for general public input. During this time, you can let the Council know about any issues or concerns you have about Sebastian. The council will also give residents the chance to provide public input on the specific agenda items as they reach them during the course of the meeting. This is why the Clerk’s Office makes the agenda available to residents before the meeting. We don’t want the decisions in council meetings to come as a surprise to our residents

If you cannot attend a meeting, you can also participate by using the Zoom link available on the CityofSebastian.org website. You can find it by clicking on the Government tab, then clicking where it says Meeting Calendar. Once you see the meeting on the Calendar, you can click More Details, and it will take you to a page to connect to the meeting online You can also watch meetings live on our city's Facebook page.

Flood Information DIDYOUKNOW?

► Heavy rains, tropical storms, and hurricanes can cause flooding

► If your property is in a special flood hazard area, there is at least a one in four chance of flooding during a 30-year mortgage

► Flooding occurs in and out of designated high-risk flood zones.

► Nearly 20 percent of flood insurance claims come from areas that are not in a special flood hazard area. Take advantage of a highly discounted preferred risk policy.

► Natural floodplains provide storage for flood waters and buffer the coastal areas from storm surges. They also improve water quality, recharge aquifers, improve wildlife habitat and provide recreational opportunities.

► The Indian River County Emergency Management offers to send safety alerts via text or email www.irces.com/EM

► Six inches of moving water can make you fall, and a foot of water will float many vehicles

PROTECTINGNATURAL FLOODPLAINS

► Build outside of the natural floodplain.

► Do not fill in a floodplain.

► Report dumping, ditch obstruction, flooding and pond issues

Use Low Impact Development

• Rain barrels

• Pervious paver

• Vegetative buffers

• Green roofs

FINDOUTYOUR FLOODRISK

► Educate your friends, neighbors and colleagues about the importance of natural floodplains.

1. What types of flooding am I susceptible to?

2. Which flood zone am I in?

3. Do I need flood insurance?

4 Am I in a storm surge area?

5. What’s the difference between a flood zone and an evacuation zone?

6. How deep could the flood get for a category two hurricane?

7. How do I get the information I need to complete my elevation certificate?

AIRPORT

EMPLOYEE HIGHLIGHT

The Sebastian Municipal Airport would like to recognize three employees, Patrick Winne, Ron Wells, and Keith Perkins, for their extra efforts, resulting in another successful FDOT Airport Inspection. We passed the annual visit with no discrepancies noted and a compliment from the FDOT inspector for our preparedness. These gentlemen paid extra attention to the runways, taxiways, and overall field conditions to ensure we are in compliance with all state mandates. This resulted in our regular license renewal for continued operations. Well done to these three!
