At the April 21 meeting,City Councilmembers recognized Emiaj Jaime of Hagerty High School, who won the girls' 110-pound weight class at the 2025 FHSAA State Weightlifting Championship. This season, Emiaj overcame a serious injury at the beginning of her junior season, breaking her clavicle, which resulted in 10 months of recovery This injury did not hinder her quest for a state championship Once cleared in October at the start of our season, Emiaj gave it her all, performing two (2) training sessions a day to catch up to her previous performance numbers With a steady-paced head-down, eyes-forward approach, Emiaj accepted the challenge of pushing herself to get better every day.

The City has a page dedicated to information for residents about what the new utility rates look like over a five (5) year period. The new utility rates are for Stormwater, Potable Water Usage, Wastewater Treatment and Reclaimed Water Usage. This page provides information about each of these topics, an explanation of how residential utility bills will be affected, including tables that break down base rates and yearly adjustments, videos from the meetings listed above, a PDF that explains commercial usage, key points and the stormwater, water, wastewater and reclaimed water rate study reports that explain how the proposed new rates were developed in detail.
The new rates are necessary for the Public Works Department to maintain and operate utilities for residents and businesses in the city. The proposed new rates reflect the impact of increased costs for supplies, chemicals, replacement parts, utility vehicles, necessary engineering studies and needed infrastructure maintenance and improvements. The new rate's long-term goals are to make sure the City's utility infrastructure is adequate to provide the required services, resilient enough to withstand climate impacts and emergencies and to meet the demands of emergency operations such as fire suppression.

Hurricane Season is just around the corner and now is the time to prepare yourself, your family and your property to make sure you are ready should a storm come.
In 2024 we have Hurricanes Helene and Milton pass over and thankfully Oviedo was spared any significant damage. Use our website to download a checklist and make sure all the boxes are checked.
It is a good time now to be Flood Aware and your insurance policy needs to be in place 30 days before a major storm event for claims. Residents should know what they can do to protect their property before the summer storms and hurricane season. Heavy storms can come through our area on any given day during the rainy season, causing water to rise. Homes can easily flood, even if the homes/neighborhoods are not in a published flood hazard area. Here is some information the City can provide for you to help navigate through the insurance process.
If you would like to make an inquiry or need a copy of an elevation certificate or require a letter as verification, please tell us the street address and, if available, the subdivision, lot and block number. The City of Oviedo does not charge for this service. We are open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please contact the Stormwater Coordinator at 407-971-5682 or e-mail at akortus@cityofoviedo.net.
INTERACTIVE FLOOD MAP
The fluoride additive at the City’s West Mitchell Hammock Water Treatment Plant (WMHWTP) began experiencing equipment issues in December 2023 to January 2024 time period. Due to unreliable analyzers, the addition was halted and restarted at the end of July. It ran through August and the beginning of September 2024, but was halted again due to equipment failure and has been primarily paused since then. The analyzers should have been scheduled to be replaced in the prior fiscal year; only the fluoride chemical skid is currently budgeted for replacement. Costs for a system replacement (which includes chemical skid, analyzers, and SCADA software) are in excess of $300,000, as previously mentioned.
At no time was there a public safety issue and the Department of Health was notified. Also, no permit violation occurred.
Having a Fluoride analyzer out of service is not considered an emergency situation because it does not impact Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) permit compliance or public water safety. The analyzer can be placed out of service until a technician is scheduled to arrive to troubleshoot issues identified. The pause in feeding Fluoride does not cause a FDEP permit compliance issue, however, the City did report a non-optimal feed to the Department of Health as required. The long-time delay in trying to fix the equipment is a combination of an extended maintenance schedule and scheduling a service technician.
Feeding Fluoride with analyzers that fail to hold calibration could lead to a fluoride over feed of the water system. Due to the dangers of a potential accidental overfeed, it was determined that the Fluoride system would be temporarily paused due to the necessary diligence to protect the water system. is needed is a written notification to FDEP and we will not be required to modify the operational permit or provide additional sampling.
The Racquetball Courts have recently been completed and are now open for play!

Due to dry conditions, there is a burn ban in effect in Seminole County. What You Can & Can’t Do
With the current burn ban in place for Seminole County, let’s keep our community safe and fire-free. Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s allowed and what’s not:
What You CANNOT Do:
• No outdoor burning (brush piles, trash, burn barrels)
• No campfires or fire pits (even if they’re in a backyard)
• No fireworks or open flame torches
What You CAN Do:
• Use gas/propane grills for cooking
• Enjoy a fire inside your home fireplace (as long as it’s enclosed)
Reminder: One spark can start a wildfire. Let’s all do our part to prevent it.
