National Police Week

At the May 5, 2025, City Council Meeting, the Oviedo City Council proclaimed the week of May 11th through 17th, 2025, National Police Week and recognizes May 15, 2025, as Peace Officers' Memorial Day. The Police Department was ecognized for the essential role they play in safeguarding the Citizens of Oviedo and honoring those Officers across the County who have lost their lives or become injured in the line of duty.

EXTRA UTILITY BILLING CYCLE ADVISORY

Due to an extra week in May, the City is asking utility customers to prepare for a longer-than-usual billing cycle. There will be five weeks in the May cycle. This advisory is being provided to help customers plan for potential increases in usage and to enable customers to plan accordingly. The billing cycle will run from approximately April 21 through May 26, 2025.

Hurricane Season is just around the corner and now is the time to prepare yourself, your family and your property to make sure you are ready should a storm come.

In 2024 we have Hurricanes Helene and Milton pass over and thankfully Oviedo was spared any significant damage. Use our website to download a checklist and make sure all the boxes are checked.

BE FLOOD AWARE

It is a good time now to be Flood Aware and your insurance policy needs to be in place 30 days before a major storm event for claims Residents should know what they can do to protect their property before the summer storms and hurricane season. Heavy storms can come through our area on any given day during the rainy season, causing water to rise Homes can easily flood, even if the homes/neighborhoods are not in a published flood hazard area. Here is some information the City can provide for you to help navigate through the insurance process

If you would like to make an inquiry or need a copy of an elevation certificate or require a letter as verification, please tell us the street address and, if available, the subdivision, lot and block number The City of Oviedo does not charge for this service. We are open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p m Monday through Friday Please contact the Stormwater Coordinator at 407-971-5682 or e-mail at akortus@cityofoviedo net

Thank You

The Oviedo Police Department would like to sincerely thank our supporters, the community and everyone who reached out about the sudden loss of Officer Jimmy Serrano-Torres III.

“Our department is heartbroken and devastated by the loss of Officer Serrano,” said Police Chief Dale Coleman “He was not only an outstanding officer, but also a bright light in our community. Always professional and courteous, he earned the respect of his fellow officers and the citizens he served. He will be deeply missed.”

Officer Serrano had been with the department since August 2021 and was a patrol officer. He was 36 years old and is survived by his parents and siblings.

Window and Door Alarms

We are getting into our hot season and this is the time of year where we spend a lot of time outside. The Fire Department has partnered with the Wesley Seth Foundation to make drowning deaths preventable Fill out this INTEREST FORM and we can provide you with FREE door and window alarms that will alert you if a little one goes outside to explore and play in bodies of water. Florida has the highest drowning rates of children ages 0-9. Let’s prevent drownings!

We had a lot of fun at the 100th Anniversary Celebration on April 26th. It was great to meet everyone and grab pictures with all the kids!

ONLY RAIN DOWN THE DRAIN

If you're planning on raking leaves and cleaning up the yard, make sure you rake and bag your debris and do not blow yard clippings/leaves into the street These can collect in the storm drains, water bodies and wetlands/conservation areas contaminating our water. The debris turns into algae which is detrimental to our wildlife and wetlands.

-Rake and bag leaves for curbside pickup

-Mow over leaves in the yard for compost

-Use leaves for composting (leaves are organic and perfect for compost piles)

ALLIGATOR MATING SEASON

Spring is the time of year when we see more and more alligators out and about. Males are in search of females to mate with and will be more active around waterways and potentially neighborhoods. Courtship begins in early April and mating occurs in May and June.

Never Feed Alligators! It is dangerous and illegal

Keep your pets on a leach and never walk them at the edge of the water You may not see an alligator, but they will see you

Never swim outside of posted swimming areas and only swim during daylight hours

Closely supervise children when they are play around lakes, ponds and rivers

Pay attention to your surroundings and be aware of the possible presence of an alligator

If you have a concern about an alligator in your neighborhood, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Nuisance Alligator Hotline: 866-394-4286
