Art in the Chambers
On May 5, 2025, the Oviedo City Council and Oviedo Public Arts Board opened the second Art in the Chambers Exhibition, displaying charcoal drawings by Ms. Wonda Granville, a local artist raised in Oviedo. Most of the charcoal drawings in the Oviedo exhibition are based on photographs of old Oviedo and old Central Florida
Ms. Granville is an accomplished artist who has received several awards, including the best emerging artist award from the 65th Annual Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival and the purchase award from the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation.
The free exhibition will be open to the public from May 5, 2025, until September 5, 2025, during regular office hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some of the charcoal drawings are for sale, and 25% of the sale price will be donated to the Public Art Fund.
Maintenance Flush of Drinking Water System
The City of Oviedo will be performing the annual maintenance flush of the City's drinking water distribution system starting June 4, 2025
During this period, the City's drinking water distribution system will use a "free" chlorine residual in the water instead of the usual "chloramine" disinfectant. As part of the maintenance flush, residents may notice increased system flushing activity.
Some residents may notice a slight chlorine taste and/or chlorine odor in the water. Fish owners and individuals on kidney dialysis need to take necessary precautions during the chlorine flush of the system.
If anyone has questions, they can contact the Public Works Department Utilities Division at 407971-5675 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
We want to thank our residents for their cooperation during this chlorine flushing period.

HOW TO
BE SAFE BEFORE. DURING AND AFTER A MAJOR STORM
HURRICANE SEASON - JUNE 1 - NOVEMBER 30
Hurricane Season is just around the corner and now is the time to prepare yourself, your family and your property to make sure you are ready should a storm come.
In 2024 we have Hurricanes Helene and Milton pass over and thankfully Oviedo was spared any significant damage. Use our website to download a checklist and make sure all the boxes are checked.

BE FLOOD AWARE
It is a good time now to be Flood Aware and your insurance policy needs to be in place 30 days before a major storm event for claims. Residents should know what they can do to protect their property before the summer storms and hurricane season. Heavy storms can come through our area on any given day during the rainy season, causing water to rise. Homes can easily flood, even if the homes/neighborhoods are not in a published flood hazard area. Here is some information the City can provide for you to help navigate through the insurance process.
If you would like to make an inquiry or need a copy of an elevation certificate or require a letter as verification, please tell us the street address and, if available, the subdivision, lot and block number. The City of Oviedo does not charge for this service. We are open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please contact the Stormwater Coordinator at 407-971-5682 or e-mail at akortus@cityofoviedo.net.

WHERE NOTTO PLACE DEBRIS AFTER A NATURAL DISASTER
Do you know what to do with your debris after a storm? Here is a great reminder!
After a hurricane, debris from trees, fences and around the home can be left scattered. Many citizens like to get out immediately following a hurricane to start cleaning up. (Always be careful if there is shattered glass, jagged pieces or powerlines hanging. Wear protective covering and know how to use your tools properly)
The city will bring in a contractor to remove large debris. Here is how you can separate it:
Large branches and vegetative debris must be piled up, unbundled for the large haulers to pick
up. Place it all by the curb. Avoid placing your debris in the street, in front of electrical boxes, fire
hydrants or under power lines.

SAFETY REMINDER
Please observe wildlife from a safe distance. Never disturb nests, eggs, or young animals—this is not only harmful but prohibited by law. Refrain from feeding or attempting to approach ANY wild animals. Keep kids away from snakes, alligators, and/or bears. Remember, the goal is observation, not interaction.
This is a fantastic way to keep kids engaged, support environmental education, and contribute to wildlife conservation efforts. Let’s reconnect with nature—responsibly.
WILDLIFE WHEREABOUTS
SUBMIT YOUR PHOTOS!
What is it?
The City of Oviedo recognizes the importance of floodplain protection and the wildlife that live within them. The Wildlife Whereabouts Initi ative is a way for residents of Oviedo to connect with their loca l wildlife and build awareness for the benefits the natural floodplains hold, as floodplains and wetlands preserve and reduce things like non-point source pollution and other habitat impacts. Additionally , preserving our natural floodplains and wetland areas reduce property damage for residents and business owners. Through th i s initiative, residents and visitors can submit photographs of thei r wildlife sightings by filling out the "Wildlife Whereabouts" Form provided online and at parks located in or around wetlands and f l oodplains. Once photograph submissions are approved and the species verified, they will be displayed on the "Whereabouts" interactive GIS map provi ded in an online Story Map. The map can be used to see the locations of these sightings around Oviedo along with educational material for each species
Survey the Septic
Now is the time to have your septic tank inspected, before heavy summer rains come. It is important to have your septic tanks pumped and inspected regularly. Heavy rains cause a strain on the structures and lead to nasty backups. Not only will this cost you, but those backups can contaminate waterways and public storm systems with high nutrients.
Be
Bear Aware
Oviedo is no stranger to black bears and we want everyone to be aware of bears and how to stay safe and secure your property.
Do not leave food out for bears. It is illegal to feed them and dangerous for bears and people. Secure garbage cans and do not leave pet food out. You can also purchase a bear-proof garbage can if you leave them outside.
Be aware of your surroundings and walk pets on a short leash, especially at dawn and dusk. If you see juvenile bears, know the mother is close by. Do not try to interact with them. Bears are aggressive when protecting their young.
If you see a bear up a tree, LEAVE IT ALONE. It will leave on it's own and you can contact Florida Fish and Wildlife to report it.
If a bear comes into your yard, make noise. Scare that bear and it will leave. The FWC does allow for the use of paintballs, bear spray and slingshots to scare a bear away.
If you have a concern about a bear in your neighborhood, call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922.
