McKinnon Avenue Ribbon Cutting
McKinnon Avenue Ribbon Cutting
On June 13, City of Oviedo officials had a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the reopening of McKinnon Avenue and the rebuild of McKinnon ditch in the Alafaya Woods subdivision, following extensive repairs from damage caused by Hurricane Ian in 2022.
The McKinnon Ditch, located at the intersection of McKinnon Avenue and Gould Place, sustained severe damage during the hurricane. Erosion from floodwaters caused a collapse in the area, prompting City Engineers to implement interim repairs while developing a long-term solution.
Working diligently with consultants and contractors, the Public Works Department developed a comprehensive plan not only to rebuild the collapsed portion of McKinnon Avenue but also to restore the eroded access road and install a new drainage system to improve water flow from a nearby ditch.
The road was reconstructed with a reinforced box culvert designed to withstand higher floodwaters and better manage storm runoff

Maintenance Flush of Drinking Water System
The City of Oviedo will be performing the annual maintenance flush of the City's drinking water distribution system starting June 4, 2025
During this period, the City's drinking water distribution system will use a "free" chlorine residual in the water instead of the usual "chloramine" disinfectant. As part of the maintenance flush, residents may notice increased system flushing activity.
Some residents may notice a slight chlorine taste and/or chlorine odor in the water. Fish owners and individuals on kidney dialysis need to take necessary precautions during the chlorine flush of the system.

It is a good time now to be Flood Aware and your insurance policy needs to be in place 30 days before a major storm event for claims. Residents should know what they can do to protect their property before the summer storms and hurricane season. Heavy storms can come through our area on any given day during the rainy season, causing water to rise. Homes can easily flood, even if the homes/neighborhoods are not in a published flood hazard area. Here is some information the City can provide for you to help navigate through the insurance process.

The City is pleased to announce the opening of McKinnon Avenue in the Alafaya Woods subdivision! After Hurricane Ian, the ditch suffered significant flooding and damage, calling for an extensive engineering overhaul of the area.

We want to thank all the residents for your patience while this project was completed, from start to finish. We also want to thank our contractors who did a spectacular job and our Public Works team who worked tirelessly on this project for the past 2.5 years.

Hurricane Ian Damage
In the picture to the right, you can see the extent of damage done to the roadway and ditch. This was a complete collapse of the area that needed a full engineering redesign. When FEMA came out to inspect, they recommended the city completely redesign the ditch in order to prepare for a 500year storm. Ian was considered to be a 100 Year Storm.

The City of Oviedo recognizes the importance of floodplain protection and the wildlife that live within them. The Wildlife Whereabouts Initiative is a way for residents of Oviedo to connect with their local wildlife and build awareness for the benefits the natural floodplains hold, as floodplains and wetlands preserve and reduce things like non-point source pollution and other habitat impacts. Additionally, preserving our natural floodplains and wetland areas reduce property damage for residents and business owners. Through this initiative, residents and visitors can submit photographs of their wildlife sightings by filling out the "Wildlife Whereabouts" Form provided online and at parks located in or around wetlands and floodplains. Once photograph submissions are approved and the species verified, they will be displayed on the "Whereabouts" interactive GIS map provided in an online Story Map. The map can be used to see the locations of these sightings around Oviedo along with educational material for each species.

Survey the Septic
Now is the time to have your septic tank inspected, before heavy summer rains come. It is important to have your septic tanks pumped and inspected regularly. Heavy rains cause a strain on the structures and lead to nasty backups. Not only will this cost you, but those backups can contaminate waterways and public storm systems with high nutrients.
