HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
LEARN
HURRICANE SEASON - JUNE 1 - NOVEMBER 30
Hurricane Season is just around the corner and now is the time to prepare yourself, your family and your property to make sure you are ready should a storm come.
In 2024 we have Hurricanes Helene and Milton pass over and thankfully Oviedo was spared any significant damage. Use our website to download a checklist and make sure all the boxes are checked.
HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WEB PAGE
BE FLOOD AWARE
It is a good time now to be Flood Aware and your insurance policy needs to be in place 30 days before a major storm event for claims. Residents should know what they can do to protect their property before the summer storms and hurricane season. Heavy storms can come through our area on any given day during the rainy season, causing water to rise. Homes can easily flood, even if the homes/neighborhoods are not in a published flood hazard area. Here is some information the City can provide for you to help navigate through the insurance process.
If you would like to make an inquiry or need a copy of an elevation certificate or require a letter as verification, please tell us the street address and, if available, the subdivision, lot and block number. The City of Oviedo does not charge for this service. We are open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please contact the Stormwater Coordinator at 407-971-5682 or e-mail at akortus@cityofoviedo.net.
Safety Tips
A lot is going on before, during and after a storm. You want to make sure your family and property are ready for the storm. Once the storm passes, there are still dangers that can lurk even when the clouds have cleared and the sun is shining.
Roadway flooding - you may want to get out of the house and go survey your neighborhood or area, but there could be hidden dangers in roadway flooding. If water is completely covering a road, you will not be able to see where the road starts and where the ditch begins. If you see water across a road, just turn around, don't drown.
If you lose power and are relying on a generator for power, know how to use it! NEVER EVER put a generator in the home, under a window, by a door or in the garage. Generators expel carbon monoxide, which is an odorless gas that can kill. Keep it at least 20 feet from the house in an open area and plug only the essentials in.
Power poles may break and power lines may be on the ground. NEVER assume the lines are not conducting electricity. Never touch downed powerlines. Call your local power company to report them. Do not drive over them, do not walk over them. Turn around.
When cleaning up debris, handle with caution. Broken limbs are sharp; there could be other debris such as broken glass, nails and even stinging bugs or snakes that may be buried in the debris. Wear protective gear such as boots, gloves and eye coverings. If you are using power tools such as a chainsaw, read the instructions and handle with caution.
Turn Around, Don't Drown

Electric Vehicle Charging Station Upgrades
Electric Vehicle Charging Station Upgrades
The City of Oviedo is working with Duke Energy to coordinate the upgrades to the EV (Electric Vehicle) charging stations in the Center Lake Park Parking Lot. The work is starting Tuesday, July 15th and is expected to take several weeks, weather pending.
On Tuesday, the old EV charging stations will be removed and a new conduit will be installed to prepare for the new units
Duke Energy, along with Miller Electric, is in the parking lot and will be working to upgrade the existing transformer next to the lift station. This requires a transformer replacement which will affect the fountain in the center of the lake, but will not affect any homes or businesses in the area The transformer replacement is set to begin on Monday, July 23 and will require a road closure on Center Lake Lane for the crane. Please follow the posted detours and do not attempt to go around the barricades for the safety of the workers This work should only take one day, weather permitting The sidewalk in front of the lift station will also be closed to pedestrian traffic.
In place of the older chargers will be two new upgraded EV chargers that will have the capability of charging two vehicles at a time. This is double the capacity of what the current chargers can do

We want to thank everyone who stopped by our booths to check out the Oviedo Fire Department and Oviedo Police Department. The kids (and some adults too!) had a great time putting handprints on the cruisers, grabbing fire hats and taking pictures with us at the Oviedo Mall.
Window and Door Alarms
We are getting into our hot season and this is the time of year where we spend a lot of time outside. The Fire Department has partnered with the Wesley Seth Foundation to make drowning deaths preventable. Fill out this INTEREST FORM and we can provide you with FREE door and window alarms that will alert you if a little one goes outside to explore and play in bodies of water. Florida has the highest drowning rates of children ages 0-9. Let’s prevent drownings!
Wednesday July 23, 2025 8 am. - 10 am.
E. Mitchell Hammock Rd, Oviedo
The Oviedo Police Department officially welcomed two new officers to its ranks today as Christopher St. John and William Riddleberger were sworn in during a ceremony in the Oviedo City Council Chambers.
Officers St. John and Riddleberger were sworn in and pinned at 10:30 a.m., with the oath administered by Police Chief Dale Coleman.
“Law Enforcement is an honorable career, but can be a challenging one as well,” said Chief Coleman. “I look forward to watching them both grow and develop in their roles. Our officers support one another, and they are joining a strong team.”
Christopher St. John is originally from New Jersey, but has lived in Oviedo for 30 years. He was with the Orlando Police Department for 23 years before retiring. He wanted to work for the Oviedo Police Department and come back to policing to serve the community where he lives. His son Justin, who is also looking at a potential career in law enforcement, pinned St. John after he was sworn in.
William Riddleberger grew up in North Carolina and after high school, he joined the Marines. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California, where he served for four years, before coming to Central Florida. He went through the Oviedo Police sponsorship program and was pinned by his wife, Grace. They both enjoy spending time off at Disney. The ceremony was attended by family, friends, fellow officers, command staff, and city employees, all there to celebrate and welcome the new officers.
Medication Disposal Program
The City of Oviedo offers a Medication Disposal Program, which allows Oviedo residents to dispose of non-liquid medications. The program is for residential customers only and does not include physician offices, nursing or assisted living facilities, pharmacies, or any other commercial business.
The Medication Disposal Program was developed to offer you an opportunity to properly dispose of prescribed medications. An alarming number of teenagers are discovering that prescription medications are easily available to them from their home medicine storage cabinet and are not aware of the health risks of taking prescribed medications not intended for their use. Now you have a method of disposing of unused medications or perhaps those that are out of date or no longer needed for individual health needs. In addition, following the passing of a family member, we are asked to dispose of those prescribed medications safely. This program is designed specifically for that purpose as well.
Disposal
You may dispose of any non-liquid medications at:
Oviedo Police Department
Main Lobby
300 Alexandria Boulevard
Oviedo, FL 32765
Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Seminole County Sheriff's Office
1255 E. Broadway Street
Oviedo, FL 32765
Hours: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
A self-deposit, self-serve Medication Disposal Container is located inside the main Police Department Lobby and the Seminole County Sheriff's Office. All narcotics (pain and other medications) may be disposed of at this location. As a reminder, these types of medications may not be disposed of at the Oviedo Fire Administration Office or Fire Stations.
Liquid medications can be disposed of by pouring them into coffee grounds or cat litter and disposing of them in a plastic bag in your garbage.
Congratulations to both Michael Radzak and Tim Deppen!
Radzak was promoted to Lieutenant! Today He was presented with his new red helmet from Battalion Chief Dave Barsky. Lieutenant Radzak has dedicated over 11 years to selflessly serving the citizens of Oviedo and will be assigned to A shift Station 46.

What is it?
The City of Oviedo recognizes the importance of floodplain protection and the wildlife that live within them. The Wildlife Whereabouts Initi ative is a way for residents of Oviedo to connect with their loca l wildlife and build awareness for the benefits the natural floodplains hold, as floodplains and wetlands preserve and reduce things like non-point source pollution and other habitat impacts. Additionally, preserving our natural floodplains and wetland areas reduce property damage for residents and business owners Through th i s initiative, residents and visitors can submit photographs of their wildlife sightings by filling out the "Wildlife Whereabouts" Form provided online and at parks located in or around wetlands and floodplains. Once photograph submissions are approved and the species verified, they will be displayed on the "Whereabouts" interactive GIS map provi ded in an online Story Map . The map can be used to see the locations of these sightings around Oviedo along with educational material for each species. Submit Photos Here
Do Not Feed the Ducks
Feeding the ducks creates many issues, including poor nutrition, spread of disease through feces, overcrowding and prevents them from developing natural foraging abilities. Their excrement pollutes our waterways and harms not just other wildlife but your pets as well. Please spread the word and remind your neighbors to avoid feeding the ducks.
Do Not Litter Waterways
Let's keep our waterways clean! If you see any intentional dumping, please let us know! Not only is dumping unsightly, but it is also illegal & can contaminate waterways. Please do your part and pick up after yourselves. Use our FIX IT FORM to report any litter you may see.
Please D~n•t Feed Waterfowl
