ART

Chris Granillo completed the longest mural in Emeryville – an astounding 275 linear feet - last January on the western façade of the Emerytech building adjacent to the railroad tracks. The work was funded by the City’s Visual Art Grants, issued every even year and is visible from Shellmound Street.

Welcome to the Summer City News & Activity Guide for the City of Emeryville! As your City Manager, I am thrilled to share with you an exciting lineup of programs and activities designed to bring our community together and enrich our daily lives This summer, we are proud to offer a diverse range of recreational programs from sports,

fitness classes to martial arts, and community gatherings. Each program has thoughtfully planned to cater to all ages and interests, ensuring there is something for everyone I am also delighted to announce that we received Assemblywoman Mia Bonta’s District 18 award for the 2024 Arts & Festival of the Year The City of Emeryville won this recognition for the 2024 Harvest Festival, highlighting our ongoing commitment to creating memorable community events

I would also like to extend a special thank you to IKEA for their generous donation of equipment for our Teen Center Their support has made it possible for us to enhance this space into a dynamic hub where our young residents can connect, learn, and grow in a safe and welcoming environment

Additionally, I want to highlight the incredible work of the ECCL and the various community activities they coordinate Their commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community is evident in every event and program they offer I encourage each of you to take advantage of these opportunities participate, engage, and experience firsthand the positive impact these activities have on our community.

I am also excited to share that Sutter Health has announced plans to build a new, state-of-theart medical campus right here in Emeryville. This $1 billion investment will feature a 1.3 millionsquare-foot facility, including a 200-bed hospital with emergency services, intensive care, labor and delivery, outpatient clinics, and imaging services. The new medical center is expected to begin serving patients as early as 2028, with full completion by 2033. This development will significantly enhance healthcare access for our residents and underscores Emeryville's growth as a regional hub for quality medical services vitalssutterhealthorg

The City of Emeryville is in search of community volunteers to support it's robust programming, services, and special events. Week 1 - All Things Pixar

Come and join us in Emeryville for a summer camp that is jam packed with innovative activities and new experiences for your TK-8th grader

Each day a camper will be given a warm welcome, breakfast, build community, have lunch, a snack, learn new things and play in the sun.

Each week a camper will get to: swim twice in the ECCL pool, go on a field trip, visit at least two Emeryville parks, one field trip t-shirt, dress up in a theme to get a prize, get a swag gift to take home, and complete the following classes: cooking, art, STEM, theatre, movement, music, games, nature play, sports, and more!

Question: How long have you been working at The Rec?

Answer: I started in the Fall of 2022 The first year and a half, I was a TK/K Rec Leader and then became a Rec Specialist, working on the curriculum piece for the afterschool and summer camp programs

Q: What's your favorite Rec Memory?

A: "Recs-giving" is always a favorite memory each year Sharing a meal with our Rec families and being in one space all together is a special time of connection and joy.

Q: What's your favorite Rec Activity?

A: I have two: Tasty Tuesday/Middle School Cooking Club: I love the excitement the kids have each week for it - wondering what they'll be making and eating Quite often, they're learning and trying something new! and this year, we started Spirit of Rec Pride - A monthly assembly in which each group has a chance to win the Spirit Staff for their class, symbolizing that their group embodies the Best of Rec (through leadership, acts of service, conflict resolution, responsibility, etc) It's been amazing witnessing the transition from Rec Leader-led to student-led presentations as their confidence and skills develop throughout the year

Q: What hobbies do you do outside of Rec?

A: I love traveling, reading, hiking, geocaching, photography, and baking

TRAINING LEADERS IN

The L.I.T. Program offers 9th-12th graders valuable volunteer experience in youth engagement or office settings Teens will develop professional skills, fulfill graduation volunteer requirements, and serve as positive role models Participants must commit to at least 15 hours across 3 days per week for 8 weeks Completion makes LITs eligible for futu employment!

Water adjustment and safety skills for parent and child This class is not designed to teach toddlers to swim independently, but to increase the comfort level of children in and around water

The primary goal is to build water confidence and basic swimming skills through engaging activities, games, and interactive exercises Instructors use ageappropriate teaching methods, incorporating play-based learning to make the lessons enjoyable for the little ones

This beginner level focuses on water introduction and basic skills Participants develop water entry and exit techniques, front and back float with support, and learn to glide through the water Water safety rules and basic pool behavior are introduced

Participants in Level 2 work on fundamental aquatic skills This includes floating without support, retrieving submerged objects, and exploring underwater Basic front and back crawl arm movements are introduced, laying the foundation for future strokes

In Level 3, participants begin stroke development. They refine front and back crawl, learn breaststroke and elementary backstroke, and practice treading water Water safety principles, such as recognizing lifeguards and using life jackets, are emphasized

Level 4: Dolphin

Level 4 focuses on stroke improvement Participants refine their strokes, including front and back crawl, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke Sidestroke and butterfly are introduced Treading water duration is extended, and participants learn basic water rescue techniques.

Level 5: Stingray

Level 5 emphasizes is on refining skills, building advanced endurance, and preparing for more specialized swim training Child must swim front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke for 15 yards independently in water that may be over their head. They will refine front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, and elementary backstroke

Ages: 7 - 13 yrs

Level 6: Orca

Level 6 focuses on mastering advanced techniques, increasing swimming proficiency, and preparing for competitive swimming or specialized aquatic activities Child must be able swim at least 25 yards of front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, and breaststroke in deep water Sidestroke is learned and butterfly is introduced They will also practice treading water with different kicks and flip turns

Teen/Adult

Private swim lesson is a personalized swimming instruction session conducted one-on-one between a swim instructor and an individual student Private swim lessons provide an opportunity for accelerated learning, immediate feedback, and customized skill development based on the student's abilities and progression.

Our Adult/Teen group lessons offer a supportive environment for swimmers of all abilities aged 14 and above Whether you're new to the water or aiming to refine your strokes, our classes cater to your individual needs Participants will engage in water adjustment, buoyancy drills, and stroke technique under the guidance of experienced instructors Ages: 14+

Refunds and cancellations will only be considered if they are requested within 14 days prior to the start date of the scheduled activity In the event the Community Services Department cancels a class or program (due to inclement weather, low enrollment, etc), a refund or make-up program will be offered If the participant is unable to attend a class or program due to personal reasons outside of the dates specified, a refund will not be granted (including pro-rated refunds) A $1000 administrative fee will be applied, per customer, for each refund/cancellation This fee may be deducted from the total refund amount if requested

WHAT IS 8-TO-GO?

The ‘8 To Go’ is an on-demand shuttle service for everyone ages 70+, or people ages 18–69 who are certified to use East Bay Paratransit and residing in 94608 zip code Once enrolled in the program, users just place a call to set-up your travel itinerary and location, it’s that simple! Travel is limited to locations to and from the 94608 zip code area (which is all of Emeryville and portions of North and West Oakland including MacArthur BART, Kaiser, Sutter and more)

WHY SHOULD I USE 8-TO-GO?

This service is intended to help seniors and people with disabilities travel within the local 94608 area

Whether it’s a trip to the Senior Center, grocery store, favorite restaurant, medical appointment, or religious services, 8-To-Go will provide the personalized service and attentiveness not found in other transportation services.

Why should I become a member of the Senior Center?

Membership is only $31 per year, and entitles you to enjoy the many activities, events, and trips organized by the Senior Center. Members also receive ‘The LINK’, a monthly newsletter that gives up-to-date information that impacts seniors. Membership is open to residents and non-residents alike, so stop by the Senior Center to fill out the form or download it at http:// emeryvilleorg/150/50-Adults

Refunds and cancellations will only be considered if they are requested within 14 days prior to the start date of the scheduled activity In the event the Community Services Department cancels a class or program (due to inclement weather, low enrollment, etc), a refund or make-up program will be offered If the participant is unable to attend a class or program due to personal reasons outside of the dates specified, a refund or make-up lesson will not be granted (including pro-rated refunds).

A $10.00 administrative fee will be applied, per customer, for each refund/cancellation. This fee may be deducted from the total refund amount if requested

Iaido is a classical Japanese martial art that is over 400 years old and focuses on drawing and using a samurai sword The original purpose of Iaido was to counter a surprise attach, but nowaways it is an excellent system for developing awareness, calm mind, and mental and physical harmony through the practice of traditional sword techniques.

Taiko is the art of Japanese drumming, which develops selfexpression and musical creativity This course engages in uchikomi based practice The participants should have both a sense of rhythm and a stamina to hit taiko for two hours. Alameda County Measure BB passed in 2014 with 70% of the vote These funds are distributed by Alameda County Transportation Commission and support many of the pedestrian, bicycle, and street facility upgrades happening across Emeryville including: the Quiet Zone project, 2023 street repaving and multimodal restriping improvements, and ongoing upgrades to bicycle and video detection across the city

The Rotten City Cultural District (RCCD) continues to offer support for artists in multiple media with sponsorship of the Emeryville Cinema Celebration which brought the inaugural Emeryville Film Festival and Drag Me to the Cinema Festival at Bay Street AMC with multiple blocks of films in two theaters. Two workshops, multiple panels and an opening Gayla along with awards ceremony bring the ritz to Cultural Distcrict with films celebrating Black History, gender identity, local history, the artistic endeavors off hours of Pixar staff and so much more with 2-hour time blocks from 12:00 – 10:00 meeting every taste.
