WORD FROM OUR CITY MANAGER FROM OUR CITY MANAGER

Dear Residents, Families, and Friends of Emeryville,

As the air cools and the days grow shorter, I am pleased to welcome you to our Fall 2025 Recreation Program Guide Fall in Emeryville is always a season of renewal and reflection, a time to gather with family, reconnect with our community, and embrace the many opportunities our city offers

Celebrating Summer, Preparing for Fall

This past summer was full of energy, laughter, and growth across our recreation programs. Our youth enjoyed camps filled with creativity and exploration, families came together for activities in our parks, and our aquatics and fitness programs saw strong participation These programs reflect Emeryville’s ongoing commitment to wellness, inclusion, and joy

Now, as we shift into fall, we celebrate the return to school routines and the chance to focus on learning, structure, and balance Fall also brings with it the promise of togetherness, neighborhood gatherings, family dinners, and community traditions that remind us of the power of connection

Progress on Our Strategic Plan

Guided by our City’s Strategic Plan, we continue to advance initiatives that strengthen Emeryville’s quality of life From improvements in recreational facilities to expanded programming for youth and families, our progress reflects our shared vision for a community that is healthy, vibrant, and resilient These updates are made with the input of our residents and with a focus on building for the future

Staying Connected with Our Community

In July, I once again had the privilege of sharing lunch with our seniors at the Emeryville Senior Center. These ongoing conversations allow me to hear directly from those who have built and shaped our city over decades. Their stories, perspectives, and suggestions inform the way we serve our older adult community and strengthen intergenerational ties.

I have also remained engaged with our business community through monthly meetings with the Emeryville Commerce Connection These discussions ensure that we continue to foster a thriving local economy where businesses of all sizes can flourish Supporting our business partners strengthens the city as a whole and builds opportunities for residents

This fall also marks the launch of our new City of Emeryville website The redesigned site makes it easier to stay connected, whether you are signing up for recreation programs, checking event schedules, or learning about city services. Transparency, accessibility, and communication remain top priorities, and we are excited to provide this improved platform for our residents

Thank you for being an essential part of our community I look forward to seeing you this fall, in our parks, at our events, or simply around town

With gratitude,

This summer, the Park Ambassador team played a vital role in keeping Emeryville’s parks welcoming, safe, and enjoyable for the community Ambassadors provided weekend coverage at the busiest park sites, supported rental groups, monitored usage, and helped ensure parks stayed litter-free and wellmaintained. Their presence strengthened communication between park visitors and City staff, which allowed for quick reporting of maintenance needs and safety concerns Ambassadors also assisted with the rollout of the new “Poopetrator” signage campaign, which reminded park users to pick up after their pets The fun and eye-catching signs were placed throughout Emeryville parks and supported the community goal of keeping parks clean and inviting for everyone. Through these combined efforts, residents and visitors enjoyed clean, family-friendly park environments all season long The program not only supported park operations but also fostered a stronger sense of community stewardship.

More than 100 million people do not have ready access to quality parks and recreation. The vision to build and revitalize parks as thriving gathering places for youth, families and adults is one shared by NRPA, our industry and non-profit partners, and the thousands of park and recreation professionals who develop and maintain these treasured public places.

Since 2009, NRPA’s Parks Build Community program has provided safe and inclusive parks and playgrounds to serve more than 40,000 people annually and exemplifies one of the ways NRPA ensures all people have fair and just access to the benefits of high-quality parks Whether they are the site of family reunions, artistic performances, a pickup basketball game or innovative playground designs, these park and recreation spaces have generated neighborhood pride and given young and old a safe place to be physically active and enjoy community green space

CLASS I AND CLASS IV BIKEWAYS

SLIDE REPLACEMENT AT STANFORD PARK

The curly slide at Stanford Park was recently replaced by the incredible Maintenance and Operations Crew Thank you for maintaining the playground and keeping youth safe!

HDS UNIT CLEANING

Emeryville’s Hydrodynamic Separator (HDS) unit was recently cleaned out by the Maintenance and Operations Crew The HDS unit traps trash, sediment, and other debris carried by stormwater, preventing pollution from entering the San Francisco Bay HDS units require regular maintenance and must be serviced by the city’s vacuum truck

Protected Class I and Class IV bikeways increase ridership and reduce bicycle/vehicle crashes, keeping cyclists and pedestrians safe Emeryville’s Strategic Plan prioritizes bike and pedestrian focused projects, which connects to one of the plan’s four main goals: quality infrastructure and environmental stewardship The city devotes a large portion of its budget and staff time to achieving goals outlined in the Strategic Plan These proposed and in progress protected bikeways will increase Emeryville’s protected bikeway mileage by 84 miles! At completion, 58% of Emeryville’s then 195 miles of bikeways will be protected!

Adeline Link

The Adeline Link project is designed to address a bicycle safety gap on Adeline Street, from 41st Street to 36th Street The project prioritizes accessibility, bicycle mobility and safety, regional connectivity, and green infrastructure. The Adeline Link project is currently in the design phase; check in with Public Works for future updates.

Powell Street Redesign (Frontage Road to Marina)

A major redesign of Powell Street, from Frontage Road to the Emeryville Marina, is in the planning stage. The project aims to create a safer and more enjoyable experience those who move through Emeryville car-free, whether walking or rolling. This initiative, a key component of the city's recently adopted Active Transportation Plan, will transform Powell Street into a key east-west connection to the marina and shoreline Planned improvements include a separated two-way bikeway, streetscape enhancements with opportunities for public art, and new green infrastructure The project design and community outreach efforts are led by the MIG Group; the first redesign concepts are available for public preview now

Wonder about Sea Level Rise in a city with its highest elevation 22 feet above sea level?

City staff have begun adaptation planning with regional and local agencies with funding applied for from the State of California to complete a Regional Shoreline Adaptation Plan in coordination with the cities of Oakland, Berkeley and Albany This regional effort will consider the needs of local constituents, site users, vulnerable populations and Caltrans, East Bay Regional Parks, US Army Corps, State Coastal Conservancy, Ohlone tribal representatives, EBMUD and Port of Oakland as well as those seeking additional recreational access and those seeking stronger conservation of the Emeryville Crescent marsh as a reserve for critically endangered birds and functional habitat.

The Emeryville Crescent requires careful consideration given the adjacency of major infrastructure, designation as a State Marine reserve, fragmentation of the Bay Trail, adjacent park lands and adjacency to major investments in real estate and public uses in the face of sea level rise, by recent estimate to be as high as 66 feet by 2100 See State Guidance in 2024 Update for more information on these estimates and potential impact Statewide

Should you wish to know more you can see the new city website and program page here https://wwwemeryvilleorg/Services/EnvironmentalServices/Climate-Action-Adaptation

And should you wish to give feedback on future adaptation and access plans for the Emeryville Crescent please respond the survey at this QR code or text as here.
