Blackdown Cadet Training Centre recently performed their yearly Sunset Ceremony, which is a highlight each summer for many in both the base and local communities. For the cadets who have spent their six weeks at Blackdown, this performance marked the culmination of all their training and hard work over the summer.

The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Golf Nationals took place between 11 August and 15 August at the beautiful Circled Pine 18hole golf course at CFB Borden.

The regional teams competing included the Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, and West regions. The West team won the men’s team championship, with a combined low score of 1177. On the individual player side, MWO Paul Swansburg of Cold Lake was the men’s champion with scores of 70, 76, and 74; 70 being 2 under par and a best score for the entire tournament.

The women’s champion was LCdr Megan Mckenzie of Ottawa, who had an impressive 18 stroke lead over the next female competitor, shooting 84, 84, and 95.

Les championnats nationaux de golf des Forces armées canadiennes (FAC) ont eu lieu du 11 au 15 août au magnifique terrain de golf de 18 trous Circled Pine à la BFC Borden.

Parmi les équipes nationales en compétition, il y avait celles des régions de l’Atlantique, du Québec, de l’Ontario et de l’Ouest.

L’équipe de l’Ouest a remporté le championnat par équipe masculine, avec un pointage combiné de 1177. L’équipe du Québec a remporté la compétition par équipe féminine avec un pointage combiné de 564.

Du côté individuel, l’Adjum Paul Swansburg de Cold Lake est le champion masculin avec des pointages de 70, 76 et 74.

As a Board member you believe in and support the mission of the BFRC. Although this is a voluntary position, it comes with great responsibility and you will be accountable for the decisions made around the governance table.

The Centre Board of Directors is a policy governance Board responsible for the highest level of decision making and legal authority for the Centre and; also act as Ambassadors-Advocates within the community. Becoming an elected member of the Board of Directors provides you with a unique opportunity to serve your CAF community and to make a difference! Simcoe County District School Board, Education Centre 1170 Highway 26, Midhurst, Ontario TAKE NOTICE that on September 10, 2018, the Simcoe County District School Board and the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board will hold a joint information meeting concerning their respective education development charges (“EDCs”) proposals. The purpose of the meeting will be to update the Board of Trustees of each School Board on the proposed EDC by-laws. Any person who attends the meeting may make a representation to the Boards in respect of the by-laws. The Boards will also consider any written submissions.

All interested parties are invited to attend the information meeting.

The Boards would appreciate receiving written submissions one week prior to the Information Meeting, so that they may be distributed to Trustees prior to the meeting. ot all obstacles are hard to overcome! On Friday, 10 August, the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden Summer Camp children aged 6-12 years old had a chance to learn more about the role of Military Police in our community.

The Military Police Unit Borden (MPU) Community Relations Section set up a static display of a police cruiser, bicycle and utility truck to give campers an idea of some of the

tools that help them navigate through the Borden community to keep everyone safe year-round.

MPU also set up an obstacle course to encourage campers to challenge themselves both physically and mentally as they moved over, under and through obstacles all the while carrying their “prisoner” (a teddy bear) to jail! Once successfully completing the course, all campers received a goody bag of Military Police items to round out their summer fun.

es obstacles ne sont pas tous difficiles à surmonter! Le vendredi 10 août, des jeunes âgés de 6 à 12 ans qui participaient au camp d’été de la Base des Forces canadiennes (BFC) Borden ont eu l’occasion d’en apprendre davantage sur le rôle de la Police militaire au sein de notre communauté.

La Section des relations communautaires de l’Unité de police militaire (UPM) Borden a mis en exposition une voiture de police, un vélo et un camion utilitaire

pour donner un aperçu aux jeunes des ressources qui les aident à se déplacer dans la communauté de Borden ainsi qu’à assurer la sécurité de tous à longueur d’année.

L’UPM a mis en place un parcours à obstacles afin de pousser les jeunes à se dépasser physiquement et mentalement, car ils ont dû franchir les différents obstacles sur leur chemin en transportant leur « prisonnier » (un nounours) vers la prison! Une fois le parcours terminé, les jeunes ont reçu un sac à surprises rempli d’objets de la Police militaire pour clore leur été de pur plaisir.

Following the pre-show, the hundred-member Cadet Guard demonstrated all aspects of their training in drill and ceremonial duties; this included the firing of a Feu de Joie.

Accompanied by music performed by the bands, a bugler sounded the “retreat” and a musical sunset was performed.

For Lieutenant-Colonel Allan Boileau, Commanding Officer of Blackdown CTC, this was the first time seeing Blackdown’s Sunset Ceremony,

“This ceremony was remarkable in size, and I have not seen one of this caliber before. It was remarkable to see so many cadets involved, and that there were so many guests who travelled great distances to attend.”

This year’s Reviewing Officer was Colonel Atherton, the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden Commander, accompanied by Chief Warrant Officer Charrette, the CFB Borden Chief Warrant Officer. Also in attendance was Brigadier General Woiden, Formation Commander, National Cadet and Junior

Ranger Support Group and Formation Chief Warrant Officer Crawford.

In his remarks Colonel Atherton congratulated the cadets on a spectacular performance, particularly the living cenotaph. Recognizing the training centre staff, family members and friends present at Ceremony, he expressed his appreciation for being the team behind the cadets and commended them for their efforts in helping them become active and responsible citizens and eventually leaders in their communities.

Il était accompagné de l’adjudant-chef Charrette, l’adjudant-chef de la BFC Borden. Le brigadier-général Woiden, commandant de formation du Groupe de soutien national des cadets et des Rangers juniors canadiens, et l’adjudant-

chef de formation Crawford ont également assisté à la cérémonie.

Dans son allocution, le colonel Atherton a félicité les cadets pour leur prestation spectaculaire, particulièrement la création du cénotaphe vivant.

Soulignant la présence du personnel du centre d’instruction ainsi que des amis et des membres de la famille des cadets, il les a remerciés et les a félicités de former une équipe qui appuie les cadets et déploie des efforts pour contribuer à ce qu’ils deviennent des citoyens actifs et responsables, et ultérieurement, des leaders dans leurs collectivités.

‘Little ninjas’ in the making / Des « petits ninjas » en herbe

A

mongst the numerous themed offerings that the Personnel Support Programs (PSP), Community Recreation has offered to children, the martial arts camp that ran from 13 August – 17 August was a great success, and taught campers valuable defensive and offensive skills.

Campers seen here are being taught various techniques from the Borden Aikido Club instructors including Head Instructor, Major (Ret) James Murray 5th Dan,

WO Fredéric Gagnon, Shodan, LT Ryan Wickens, 2nd Kyu, and Re Moran 1st Kyu. Thank you to the Borden Aikido club for taking time out to teach the campers.

Aikido is not a conventional fighting art or sport. Instead, it is a martial art that develops the ability to harmonize with opposing forces rather than combat them. Because of this, many circular and spherical movements are involved in Aikido to redirect opposing forces towards a less harmful destination.

The budding ninjas who took part in the camp had the opportunity to learn a number of different martial art disciplines from Aikido to Judo to basic karate skills.

L’aïkido n’est pas un sport de combat conventionnel. Il s’agit en fait d’un art martial qui développe la capacité de s’harmoniser avec les forces antagonistes plutôt que de les combattre. Pour cette raison, de nombreux mouvements de rotation du corps sont utilisés en aïkido afin de faire dévier les forces antagonistes vers endroit moins dangereux pour soi. Les petits ninjas en herbe qui ont participé au camp ont eu la chance d’en apprendre davantage sur différents arts martiaux tels que l’aïkido, le judo ainsi que les rudiments du karaté.

WILLS AND GUARDIANS: PROTECTING YOUR CHILDREN

ouples with young children often make wills to appoint a guardian for their children. Most are surprised that the appointment of a guardian in a will only lasts for 90 days after their death.

The appointment is time limited to protect your children. While your guardian may be a paragon of parenting proficiency today, after you go, they might be facing serious problems of their own.

Limiting the length of the appointment protects your children from ending up in an unhealthy environment.

Your guardian must apply to court to make the appointment permanent. The children are protected because the judge will have to be satisfied that the guardian is a good choice before extending the appointment. Someone with serious doubts about the guardian can express

their concerns at this time. The process is more streamlined than a regular guardianship application, so, making the appointment in your will could save time and money.

Although the length of the appointment is limited, be careful who you choose as your children’s guardian. If you make a good choice, the guardian can more cheaply and easily make the appointment permanent. Even after the court appointment, it can still be changed by a judge if it is no longer in the best interests of your child.
