he threat of rain had no effect on The Children’s Trout Fishing Derby hosted by the Base Borden Rod and Gun Club (BBRG) at Catawampus Pond this past weekend. The pond was fully stocked with brown, rainbow and speckled trout, as well as eager little fisherpersons ready to cast a line at the pond’s edge. Many children of Base personnel came out to enjoy what turned out to be lovely weather, and even better company on the morning of May 7. Running until lunch-time, those who registered were eligible to win a prize based on the size of the trout they reeled in. The day offered a great way to get the children of CFB Borden out exploring, and seeing new ideas. Many of those casting their lines had advice and encouragement for the others. A few offered up some interesting bait, from canned corn to pieces of marshmallows. “It’s such a good way to get the youngsters involved in fishing,” said Mike Stark, the BBRG Fishing Director, “it really is a very fun day for them.” The biggest catch of the day weighed in at more than 3 lbs! Although everyone left with a catch or two, a big congratulations goes out to all of the winners. Cabela’s in Barrie offered many of the prizes at a large discount, as well as donated lures and tackle for the gift bags given to the participants. e risque de pluie annoncé pour la fin de semaine dernière n’a pas empêché le tournoi de pêche à la truite pour les enfants, organisé à l’étang Catawampus par le Club de chasse et pêche de la base de Borden d’être un grand succès. Regorgeant de truites brunes, arc-en-ciel et mouchetées, l’étang a été assiégé de pêcheurs en herbe impatients de lancer leur ligne. Les enfants du personnel de la base se sont déplacés en nombre et ont profité du beau temps, arrivé contre toute attente, ainsi que de la bonne compagnie présente en ce matin du 7 mai. À la fin de l’activité qui s’est poursuivie jusqu’à l’heure du dîner, les enfants inscrits pouvaient gagner des prix en fonction de la taille des truites remontées. Cette journée a permis aux enfants de la BFC Borden de sortir pour découvrir un nouvel endroit et de nouvelles idées. Ces pêcheurs en herbes ont reçu conseils et encouragements de la part des autres participants. Certains avaient apporté d’intéressants appâts comme du blé d’Inde en boîte et des guimauves. « C’est une si bonne façon de faire participer les jeunes à la pêche, » se réjouit Mike Stark, directeur du Club de chasse et pêche de la base de Borden. « La journée est des plus amusantes pour eux. » La plus grosse prise de la journée pesait plus de trois livres! Chacun est reparti avec un ou deux poissons, mais nous félicitons chaleureusement tous les gagnants. Le magasin Cabela’s de Barrie a fourni un grand nombre des prix à un tarif très avantageux et a fait don de leurres et d’articles de pêche pour les sacs-cadeaux des participants.
