Die Basotho glauben fest an Gott, weshalb die Hymne eine Anrufung Gottes ist, Lesotho zu beschützen, Konflikte zu überwinden, und Unsicherheiten und alles Böse zu beseitigen. Die Nationalhymne ist etwas, auf das wir Basotho stolz sind. Ich singe sie gerne, wenn ich fern der Heimat bin und (andernorts) mein Land vertrete. Dies hilft mir, mich auf meine Herkunft zu besinnen. Daraus kann ich positive Impulse ziehen.

The Basotho have a deep belief in God, which is why the anthem calls upon God to protect Lesotho, resolve conflict, and dispel instability and all bad things. The anthem is something of which we Basotho are proud. I sing it while I am away from home, representing my country. It helps me to remember where I come from, and I can draw positive momentum from that.

Im Gegensatz zu vielen Nationalhymnen finde ich den Text der Nationalhymne von Lesotho ansprechend, das heisst ohne Pomp und Gloria.

The melody is simple, easy to learn and immediately imprints itself in your mind. Nor is it too long. In contrast to many national anthems I find the text of Lesotho’s national anthem appealing. In other words, it’s devoid of pomp and circumstance.

Ich erinnere mich an einen Anlass, an dem die Hymne Eindruck auf mich gemacht hat. Nach den politi­­schen Unruhen im Jahr 1998 war ich an der Gründung des Morija Kultur- und Kunstfestes beteiligt, welches Frieden und Einheit der Nation in ihrer kulturellen Vielfalt fördern sollte. An der Eröffnung wurde die Nationalhymne gesungen und König Letsie III. war anwesend.

I remember one event when the hymn appealed to me. After the political unrest of 1998 I was involved in the founding of the Morija Cultural and Arts Festival, which had been recently established for the peace and unity of the nation in its cultural diversity. At the opening, the national anthem was sung and King Letsie III was present.

«Lesotho, Land unserer Väter» – so lässt sich der Beginn des oben angeführten Gedichtes übersetzen. Die anschliessenden Worte benennen die Schönheit Lesothos und verbinden die Bitte nach göttlichem Schutz mit der Hoffnung auf Frieden. «Oh, mein Land», ruft das lyrische Ich aus, «Du hast mir mein Leben geschenkt».

Verbunden mit einer Melodie erklingen diese Zeilen heute als Nationalhymne Lesothos: bei offiziellen Anlässen, vor Fussballspielen oder zu Ehren des Königs. Bevor das Lied 1967 im Zuge der Unabhängigkeit von Grossbritannien um drei Strophen gekürzt zur Nationalhymne bestimmt wurde, hatte es unter den Basotho als eine Art Volksgesang Verbreitung gefunden. So zumindest schilderte es bereits Jahrzehnte zuvor François Coillard (1834 –1904), der die Verse in der Landessprache Sesotho gedichtet hatte und als französischer Missionar den evangelischen Glauben ins südliche Afrika bringen wollte. Zum ersten Mal im Druck erschien Coillards Gedicht 1870 (allerdings noch ohne Melodie) in einer lesothischen Liedsammlung, mit deren Hilfe die spirituellen Anliegen der aus Paris entsandten Geistlichen unter die lokale Bevölkerung gebracht werden sollten. Mit Notentext wurde das Gedicht 1895 erstmals im Schulliederbuch ‹Lipina tsa likolo tse phahameng› veröffentlicht, das verschiedene Gesangsweisen europäischen Ursprungs enthält. Alle Lieder sind mit sesothischen Gedichten versehen und wurden in der sogenannten Tonic-Sol-fa-Notation abgedruckt, die in missionarischen Kontexten häufig Verwendung fand.

Coillard lernte die Melodie der späteren Hymne mutmasslich aus einem jener französischen Liederbücher kennen, in denen sie seit den 1830er-Jahren unter dem Namen ‹L’amour de la patrie› in Europa verbreitet wurde. Komponiert hatte sie der Basler Musikpädagoge und Komponist Ferdinand Samuel Laur (1791 –1854), in dessen Umfeld die ersten Drucke entstanden: Unter den Titeln ‹Freiheit› und ‹Des Lebens Güter› erschien das Stück vermutlich erstmals in einem schweizerischen Schulbuch (um 1820), dann in patriotischen Liedersammlungen (1824 und 1825). Bei all diesen Veröffentlichungen fungierte Laur, der den Basler Gesangverein gegründet hatte, verschiedene Chöre leitete und an Schulen Musik unterrichtete, als Herausgeber.

Mithilfe der Melodie des Schweizers Laur versuchte also der Franzose Coillard, ein lesothisches Nationalbewusstsein zu wecken. Wofür steht dabei das von ihm im Lied beschworene «Land unserer Väter»? Ist es die Idee einer eigenständigen afrikanischen Nation, die in einem stolzen Gesang gepriesen werden soll? Dafür spricht, dass die spätere Nationalhymne von Lesotho lange Zeit auch ein Lied gegen die Kolonisten der britischen Krone, später gegen den Anschluss an die Südafrikanische Union gewesen war, bevor es zum staatstragenden

‘Lesotho, land of our fathers’ is how one might translate the opening words of the above poem. The text goes on to describe the beauty of Lesotho, and combines a request for divine protection with a hope for peace. ‘O my land’, calls the lyrical subject, ‘it is where we were born’.

These lines, set to music, are sung today as the national anthem of Lesotho: at official events, before football matches and to honour the King. Before an abbreviated, two-verse form of it was chosen as the national anthem in 1967 after Lesotho’s independence from Great Britain, it had already achieved currency among the Basotho as a kind of folk song. This, at least, is how François Coillard (1834 –1904) described it several decades earlier. A French missionary who wanted to bring evangelical Christianity to Southern Africa, it was in fact he who had penned the above verses in Sesotho, the local language. Coillard’s poem found its way into print for the first time in 1870 in a collection of songs from Lesotho (though as yet without a melody). The clergymen sent from Paris to Lesotho intended this anthology to further their spiritual cause among the local population.

The poem was first published with music in 1895, in the school songbook Lipina tsa likolo tse phahameng, which contained assorted melodies of European origin.

All its songs have Sesotho lyrics and were printed in the so-called Tonic Sol-fa notation that was widely employed in missionary contexts.

Coillard probably became acquainted with the melody of his anthem-to-be in its incarnation as ‘L’amour de la patrie’ (‘The love of one’s fatherland’), in which form it featured in French songbooks from the 1830s onwards and was spread throughout Europe. It had been composed by Ferdinand Samuel Laur (1791–1854), a music educator and composer resident in Basel in Switzerland, who was also responsible for its initial publication. Entitled variously ‘Freiheit’ (‘Freedom’) and ‘Des Lebens Güter’ (‘The goods of life’), it was included in a Swiss schoolbook in around 1820 and thereafter in collections of patriotic songs in 1824 and 1825. Laur — who conducted assorted choirs, taught music in schools and co-founded the Basler Gesangverein — was the editor of all these publications.

It was thus with a melody by Laur, a Swiss, that Coillard, a Frenchman, endeavoured to awaken a sense of national awareness in Lesotho. So what does that ‘land of our fathers’ actually signify that is conjured up in his song? Is it intended

Das von Coillard transportierte Nationalbewusstsein des Liedes mutet ausgesprochen europäisch an. Es zeugt immer noch vom Geist seiner vaterländischen Wurzeln in der Schweiz und in Frankreich. Zudem bemühte sich die Pariser Mission mithilfe des Liedes wie selbstverständlich darum, die eigenen klerikalen und religiösen Vorstellungen in Lesotho zu festigen.

Umgekehrt stellt sich die Frage, wie es dazu kommt, dass die Melodie heute aus dem kulturellen Gedächtnis der Schweiz verschwunden ist, während sie im geografisch wie mentalitätsgeschichtlich fernen Lesotho lebendiger denn je ist? Die Gründe sind politischer Natur, haben aber zugleich mit der Melodie selbst zu tun. Die Tonfolge Laurs zeichnet sich durch Einfachheit und Eingängigkeit aus: Eigenschaften, die sie auch als Nationalhymne geeignet erscheinen lassen. Verblüffend aber ist, dass die Melodie ihre Wirkung ebenso in gemessenem Tempo: als choralartig getragener, feierlicher Lobgesang entfalten kann wie auch in rascher Ausführung: als marschartig-kämpferisches, revolutionär exaltiertes Lied. Die Stärke und der Grund für die Verbreitung der Melodie ist offenkundig ihre vielseitige Funktionalität im Bereich des vaterländischen Liedes, das Freiheit und Gemeinschaft feiert, oder als Gebrauchsmusik, die patriotische Gefühle wecken möchte. Diese Funktionalität wird Laurs Melodie in Europa aber gleichzeitig zum Verhängnis. Denn sie ist so eng mit den nationalpatriotischen Denkweisen des 19. Jahrhunderts verknüpft, dass ihr Verschwinden im 20. Jahrhundert mit dem Abhandenkommen eines Zeitgeschmacks zu begründen ist. Da das zuhauf vorhandene vaterländische Liedgut als frühe Form der Massenware bezeichnet werden kann, liegt es schliesslich nicht zuletzt an der Zufälligkeit geschichtlicher Ereignisse, dass ausgerechnet Laurs ‹schweizerische› Melodie zur Nationalhymne von Lesotho wurde. Und genauso zufällig ist es wohl, dass das in Europa vergessene Lied in Lesotho zu einem ganz eigenen Selbstverständnis finden konnte, das auch von einer postkolonialen Gesellschaft mitgetragen wird.

Ob nun aber der historische Aspekt oder die geografische Verbreitung des Liedes in den Vordergrund gerückt werden, ob die Nationalhymne Lesothos als ein Dokument der Unterdrückung oder der Befreiung verstanden wird: Die Melodie ist Teil einer Schweizer, einer französischen, einer kolonialen und einer genuin afrikanischen Geschichte zugleich. Aus diesem Zusammenhang kann sie nicht heraustreten, aus diesem kann sie nicht ohne Verlust getilgt oder vergessen gemacht werden. Das vorliegende Buch weiss, dass es eine solche Geschichte nur aus dem Blickwinkel seiner Verfasserinnen und Verfasser erzählen kann. Es versucht daher nicht den Eindruck zu erwecken, den lesothischen, ja noch nicht einmal den europäischen Teil ihrer Geschichte verbindlich erklären zu können. Aber es bemüht sich darum, die Unhintergehbarkeit seines ‹westlichen› Blicks auf Lesotho und sozusagen im Spiegel aus Lesotho zurück fruchtbar zu hinterfragen.

as a proud declaration, in song, of the notion of an independent African nation?

This is possible — after all, long before it became a symbol of the state, this future national anthem of Lesotho was also sung in opposition to the British colonists, and later also to any suggestion that Lesotho should join the Union of South Africa. This is what also makes ‘Lesotho fatše la bo-ntat’a rona’* different from other national anthems in Africa whose dependence on the music of their sometime colonial oppressors makes them considerably more problematic. Or is this song simply proof of the power-political savvy of a French Protestant priest? For this, too, we can find supporting arguments. The notion of ‘national awareness’ that Coillard wished to convey through song seems decidedly European, and still bears traces of its patriotic roots in Switzerland and France. What’s more, the Paris Mission was quite naturally keen to use this song in its endeavours to consolidate its own clerical and religious ideas in Lesotho.

But conversely, we have to ask how it has come about that this melody has disappeared from cultural memory in Switzerland while it is more alive than ever in Lesotho, a country that is so very far away, both geographically and in its traditional modes of thought. The reasons for this are political in nature, but are also to be found in the melody itself. Laur’s tune is notable for its simplicity and catchiness — characteristics that make it seem well-suited to becoming a national anthem. But what is astonishing is that this melody is equally effective in both a measured tempo — when sung as a solemn, celebratory, chorale-like hymn of praise — and when sung as a march-like, martial song of revolutionary fervour. The melody’s strengths — and the reasons for its dissemination — are clearly bound up with its versatile functionality. It can be both a patriotic song celebrating freedom and community, and a utilitarian piece intended to awaken patriotic feelings. But it was precisely this fact that proved the downfall of Laur’s melody in Europe. It is so closely linked to the nationalist, patriotic mind-set of the 19 th century that we can explain its disappearance in the 20 th century as a result of a sea change in prevailing tastes. There were so many patriotic songs in currency in the 19 th century that one might justifiably describe them as an early form of mass production.

Ultimately, the fact that it was Laur’s ‘Swiss’ melody that became the national anthem of Lesotho was a result of random historical events. And it was just as coincidental that this song — forgotten in Europe — should acquire a new, unique identity that could also fit a postcolonial society.

Whether or not we focus on the historical aspect or the geographical dissemination of this song, and regardless of whether we consider the national anthem of Lesotho to be a document of oppression or of liberation, it is a fact that this melody is now part of a story that is Swiss, French, colonial and genuinely African, all at one and the same time. It cannot step out of this context, nor can it be effaced or forgotten without a concomitant loss. The present volume knows that such a story can really only be told from the perspective of its authors. For this reason, it does not wish to convey any impression that it might offer an authoritative explanation of either the Lesotho or the European chapters of this story. But we shall here endeavour to question critically the ineluctability of our ‘Western’ perspective of that country, while at the same time scrutinizing to productive ends what we see reflected in the ‘mirror’ of Lesotho itself.

Aus dem Vorwort des Liederhefts ‹50 Zweistimmige Gesänge in den gebräuchlichsten Dur und Moll Tonarten für Schulen und Gymnasien› 1 geht hervor, dass dessen Herausgeber Ferdinand Laur bei seiner täglichen Arbeit einen Mangel «[a]n zweckmässigem Singstoff für Gesangesschulen[,] welchen man den Schülern während dem Unterrichte in die Hände geben kann und welcher zugleich in einem verhältnissmässigen Preise steht», empfand.2 Seit 1810 unterrichtete Laur Musik und Gesang in der Lehranstalt Hofwyl bei Bern.

1820 wurde er nach Basel berufen, wo er am Gymnasium und in der Töchterschule tätig war.3 Das Liederheft sollte «dem Gesanglehrer bei seinem Unterrichte für die gebräuchlichsten Tonarten die nöthigsten Hilfsmittel darbieten».4 Es ist zwar nicht eindeutig zu bestimmen, aus welchem Jahr die Ausgabe stammt. Da Laur auf dem Titelblatt aber als «Gesanglehrer in Basel» bezeichnet wird, kann das Heft frühestens mit 1820 datiert werden.

Der Herausgeber wählte für sein Liederheft eine Darstellungsweise, bei der beide Singstimmen im gleichen Notensystem abgedruckt werden. Seiner Ansicht nach konnte der Lehrer auf diese Weise besser alle Schülerinnen und Schüler gleichzeitig beschäftigen, und er erachtete es ausserdem als Vorteil, dass die Sängerinnen und Sänger im Blick hatten, was die jeweils andere Stimme gerade sang.

Zu Beginn eines jeden Abschnitts wird die Tonleiter und der Grundakkord (d.i. Dreiklang plus Oberoktave) auf- und absteigend im Ambitus einer Oktave abgedruckt. Sowohl diese kurze Vorstellung der Tonarten als auch die anschliessenden Lieder sind im Sopranschlüssel notiert.

Im umfassenderen ersten Teil des Hefts werden die Dur-Tonarten thematisiert: Neun Lieder stehen in C-Dur und je vier bzw. fünf in den acht folgenden Tonarten. Zunächst werden in der Logik des Quintenzirkels die Tonarten mit Kreuzen von G-Dur bis E-Dur und danach die Tonarten von F-Dur bis As-Dur eingeführt. Auffallend ist, dass die folgenden Moll-Tonarten nur durch je ein Lied veranschaulicht werden. Auch hier beginnt die Ordnung mit a-Moll, gefolgt von e-Moll, h-Moll und fis-Moll. Die Tonarten d-Moll bis f-Moll schliessen das Heft ab.

Bei einigen Liedern wird Auskunft über die Urheber von Text bzw. Musik gegeben. Die bekanntesten dichterischen Vorlagen stammen von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe und Friedrich Schiller. Unter den Komponisten treten Johann Friedrich Reichardt und Albert Methfessel prominent hervor.

Dort, wo entsprechende Angaben fehlen, kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass Laur selbst der Urheber des Lieds ist, so auch im vorliegenden Fall: Der Tonart A-Dur wird das Lied Nr. 19 mit dem Titel ‹Freiheit› nach einem Gedicht von Friedrich Schlegel zugeordnet.

The preface to the song collection 50 Zweistimmige Gesänge in den gebräuchlichsten Dur und Moll Tonarten für Schulen und Gymnasien (‘50 two-part songs in the most common major and minor keys for schools and grammar schools’)1 states that its editor, Ferdinand Laur, had in the course of his daily work noticed a lack ‘of appropriate songs for singing classes that one might place in the students’ hands during their lessons, and which were also available at a reasonable price’.2 Laur had been teaching music and singing at the school of Hofwyl near Bern since 1810. In 1820 he was appointed to teach in Basel at the grammar school (Gymnasium) and at the girls’ secondary school.3 His songbook was intended ‘to offer the most necessary aids to singing teachers in the most common keys’.4 It is impossible to determine the exact year of its publication. Laur described himself on the title page as a ‘singing teacher in Basel’, so the earliest possible date for its publication is 1820.

The format that Laur chose for his songbook meant that both voice parts were printed on the same staff. In his opinion, this made it easier for teachers to occupy all the students at the same time, and he also regarded it as advantageous if the students were able to see what the other voice was singing. At the beginning of every section, the scale of the key in question and its tonic chord (i.e. the triad plus the upper octave) is printed, ascending and descending over the space of an octave. Both these brief overviews of the keys and the subsequent songs are printed in the soprano clef.

The first half of the volume is the most extensive. Here, the major keys are described. Nine songs are in C major, and then there are four or five each in the next eight keys.

The circle of fifths is followed here, tracing a path through the sharp keys from G major to E major, then through the flat keys from F major to A-flat major. It is notable that the subsequent minor keys are illustrated by means of just one song each. Here, the keys begin with a minor, followed by e minor, b minor and f-sharp minor. The keys from d minor to f minor close the volume.

Some songs offer information about the authors of the text and / or the music. The best-known poems are

by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller.

The most prominent composers here are Johann Friedrich Reichardt and Albert Methfessel. Where no information is given, we may assume that the composer of the song in question was Laur himself, as was the case with our song here: the key of A major is assigned to song No. 19 entitled ‘Freiheit’ (‘Freedom’), after a poem by Friedrich Schlegel.

‹Freiheit›

‘Freiheit’

Die Sammlung ‹Vaterländische Lieder› 1 wurde 1824 von Ferdinand Laur zur Feier des Jahrestages der Schlacht bei St. Jakob herausgegeben.

Im Gedenken an die 1444 während der Kämpfe gegen Truppen des französischen Throns gefallenen Eidgenossen wurde zum selben Anlass ein Denkmal von Marquard Wocher eingeweiht.2 Die Einweihungsfeier wurde zu einem Volksfest – dem ersten von zahlreichen Festen zu Ehren der Schlacht bei St. Jakob.3 Die Auseinandersetzung zwischen den Eidgenossen und einer ausländischen Übermacht war in jener Zeit bereits zum Heldenmythos verklärt worden und bestärkte ein im 19. Jahrhundert wachsendes Nationalbewusstsein. Da die Regierung zur Einweihungsfeier eine grosse Menschenmenge erwartete, ergriff sie Vorsichtsmassnahmen: Durch die starke Präsenz des Militärs sollten mögliche Ausschreitungen verhindert werden, damit auf diese Weise «der Festmenge ein beaufsichtigendes und Disziplin haltendes Element beigemengt werde [...]. Trotz allen geheimen Besorgnissen der Regierung verlief das Fest ohne Störung.»4 Die patriotische Liedersammlung umfasst zwölf Lieder, die den Themenkomplex ‹Nation und Vaterland› behandeln. Sieben dieser Lieder stammen von Ferdinand Laur, drei von anderen Komponisten, und zwei blieben ohne konkrete Namensangaben. Das Lied ‹Freiheit›, welches hier von besonderem Interesse ist, steht an siebter Stelle und liegt daher etwa in der Mitte des Liederheftes. Das Gedicht von Friedrich Schlegel ist eines der wenigen in der Sammlung, welches das ‹Vaterland› nicht explizit nennt, durch die Beschreibung der Landschaft aber auf dieses anspielt.5 Seine erste Strophe lautet: «Freiheit, so die Flügel / schwingt zur Felsen-Kluft, / wenn um Thal und Hügel / weht des Frühlingsluft: / sprich aus dem Gesange, / rausch in freiem Klange, / athme Waldesduft». Dabei wurde der Liedtext noch ‹patriotisch› an die örtlichen Verhältnisse angepasst: Aus «grüne Hügel» wurde «Thal und Hügel», aus «deutschem Klange» wurde «freiem Klange».

Wie dem von der Regierung herausgegebenen Programm zur Einweihungsfeier des Denkmals zu entnehmen ist, wurden zu diesem Anlass allerdings keine Lieder von Laur, sondern bekannte Kirchenlieder gesungen, die mit einem neuen Text versehen waren.6 Aus persönlichen Aufzeichnungen der Familie Laur geht hervor, dass die Lieder an einem Jugendfest, welches einige Tage nach der offiziellen Feier stattfand, Verwendung fanden.7 An dieser Feierlichkeit wurden sie unter der Leitung Ferdinand Laurs von einigen hundert Jungen und Mädchen aufgeführt.

The collection Vaterländische Lieder 1 was published by Ferdinand Laur in 1824 to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of St. Jakob of 1444. The same occasion saw the inauguration of a monument by Marquard Wocher in honour of the Swiss soldiers who fell during this battle against the troops of the French King.2 The official ceremony was turned into a public festival — the first of many such to commemorate the battle.3 This conflict between the Swiss and a dominant foreign power had already been transfigured into a heroic legend, and served to fortify a growing sense of national awareness in the 19 th century.

The authorities expected a large mass of people to attend the inauguration, so it took precautionary measures. There was a strong army presence intended to prevent any riots. In this manner, ‘the crowds attending the festival were provided with a supervisory element to maintain discipline […].

Despite all the government’s private worries, the festival proceeded without disturbance’.4 This patriotic song collection comprised twelve songs dealing with the broad topic of ‘nation and fatherland’. Seven were by Ferdinand Laur, three by other composers, and two were published without any concrete information on who wrote them. The song ‘Freiheit’ (‘Freedom’), which is of particular interest here, was the seventh in the collection, and is thus in roughly the middle of the volume. Its poem, by Friedrich Schlegel, is one of the few in the collection that does not explicitly mention the ‘fatherland’, but whose description of the landscape clearly alludes to it.5 His first strophe runs: ‘Freiheit, so die Flügel / schwingt zur Felsen-Kluft, / wenn um Thal und Hügel / weht des Frühlingsluft: / sprich aus dem Gesange, / rausch in freiem Klange, / athme Waldesduft’ (‘Freedom, thus your wings swoop up to the rocky crevices when the spring breeze wafts through the valley and the hills: speak out in song, resound freely, and breathe the scent of the forests’). The song text was also adapted to local events by being given a ‘patriotic’ touch: Schlegel had originally written ‘grüne Hügel’ (‘green hills’), which now became ‘Thal und Hügel’ (‘valley and hills’), while his ‘in deutschem Klange’ (‘German sounds’) became ‘in freiem Klange’ (‘resound freely’).

As we can see from the programme that the government published for the monument’s inauguration, no songs by Laur were sung on this occasion. Instead, well-known hymns were sung that had been given new texts.6 According to personal reminiscences of his family, Laur’s songs were sung at a youth festival that was held a few days after the official inauguration,7 performed by several hundred boys and girls under the composer’s direction.
